The show initially starred Hina Khan and Karan Mehra, and 2016 onward, after the death of the character of Hina Khan, featured Shivangi Joshi and Mohsin Khan in lead roles. In March 2019, its popularity led to the creation of a spin-off titled "Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke", starring Rhea Sharma and Shaheer Sheikh.

The story originally begins with Akshara Maheshwari's marriage arranged with Naitik Singhania, in a large Marwari joint family based in Udaipur. They struggle to know each other, and gradually begin to understand, support and love each other. Akshara and Naitik soon give birth to a son, Naksh. Unfortunately, Naitik falls into a coma for four years post his birth due to an accident.

4 Years Later

Naitik recovers from coma and has to struggle to bond with his young, mischievous son Naksh. He also has to face his mother's death, and his father's remarriage to a widow who has two children.

Parallel stories include Naitik's two sisters - Nandini, and Rashmi. The series has also focused on Naitik's step-siblings, and Akshara's elder brother Shaurya's love story with her best friend Varsha.

After two years, Naitik's uncle Mahendra Pratap dies, and his widow Kaveri blames Akshara for the same, banishing them. Akshara and Naitik have a daughter Naira, and move out of the continent.

10 years later

Naitik has relocated to South Africa and the family has been living in Cape Town since. 19-year-old Naksh returns to Udaipur and convinces his grandaunt to forgive an innocent Akshara, and thus the family returns home.

Naksh falls in love with Tara, but she leaves him on the day of their wedding. On the other hand, wrongly blamed for her friend's death even by Akshara, and scared of imprisonment, Naira escapes Udaipur.

7 Years Later

Naira is living in an orphanage in Rishikesh, and has grown up as headstrong but insecure and arrogant. She soon meets Kartik Goenka, a young and positive man, and amidst their several fights, begins to soften her personality.

Akshara reaches Rishikesh to fund the orphanage and finds Naira there. She brings her back on the pretext of saving her orphanage. Naira begins to accept her family, and the Singhanias unite again.

The story now focuses on the beautiful love story of Naira and Kartik.

Kartik arrives in Udaipur as an employee of Naitik, and begins to stay with the Maheshwaris. He eventually falls in love with Naira, and she too confesses her love for him. Unfortunately, Akshara is killed in a sudden car crash, caused by Kartik's cousin Mansi, for which Kartik is blamed. They realise the accident, and soon the families reconcile. Kartik and Naira get married in a grand ceremony.

The show now changes its focus to the Goenka family.

Kartik hates his father as he remarried after his mother's death and in fact, believes he was responsible for the same. The confusion is soon cleared out, and the duo reunite. They also help unite Kartik's half-brother Shubham, and his young uncle Samarth, with the family. Unfortunately, Shubham dies of overdose, and everyone blames Naira for hiding his drug addiction. Kartik Naira separate again as Naira leaves and they divorce each other.

2 Years Later

Kartik is a professor now, and Naira signs up for the same classes he teaches. They fall in love again and finally reunite. After some reluctance by Kartik's stepmother Suvarna, they are married again.

Naira soon undergoes a surgery for a brain clot. Kartik's sister and Naksh's wife Keerti, and Naira, are later both revealed to be pregnant, but Naira loses her baby, and Kartik swaps the babies. Naksh finds this out as Keerti wakes up from a coma, and Naira ultimately loses her memory. She shifts back to the Singhanias, and befriends Sid while resuming her dancing lessons. Her young cousins Kuhu and Mishti, who had helped Kartik woo Naira previously, help make Naira realise she loves Kartik. Naira finally regains her memory in a Holi celebration, and Kartik and Naira reunite.

Further, Samarth falls for a pregnant Gayu, and after convincing their grandmother, they are finally married. Naira brings to light the indecent behaviour of the Goenkas' granduncle Puru, and he is thrown out. Naira now begins to hold an even greater role in the Goenka household, and enters the business. Kartik feels insecure of Naira's busy routine, and also becomes jealous of her colleague Mihir. Naira finds out she is pregnant and goes to tell Kartik, but he questions her after witnessing her and Mihir come out of the same room, to which Naira rebukes him and storms out of the Goenka house without informing him of her pregnancy. She then meets with an accident, and is assumed dead.

5 Years Later

Naira and Kartik have again separated. Naira lives in Goa with their son Kairav, while Kartik has found solace in his nephew Vansh. A woman Vedika also lives with the Goenkas now, after her dying father asked Kartik to protect her, and is in love with Kartik. The Goenkas try to convince him to move on and marry Vedika. Meanwhile, Kairav mistakenly calls Kartik and addresses him as "Papa", frequently taking advice from him. Unaware and curious, Kartik agrees to go to Goa with Vedika for her exhibition only so he can meet this child Kairav.

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has had several crossover episodes with various shows. In 2009, the show had a connection with Sapna Babul Ka...Bidaai. In 2012, the show had a crossover episode with Diya Aur Baati Hum. In 2016, Diya Aur Baati Hum's lead actress Deepika Singh made an entry.[20]

Due to Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai's popularity, a spin-off series has been produced under the title - "Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke", which premiered on 18 March 2019. The series portrays the life of Devyani's grand daughter and Naira's younger step cousin sister Mishti, portrayed by Rhea Sharma. Besides, the show features actors like Kaveri Priyam, Shaheer Sheikh, Rupal Patel and Ritvik Arora in prominent roles.[21]

The show is the fourth longest-running Indian television soap opera and is still one of the top rated show.

Hina Khan participated in the 'Power of 49' campaign, in which soap opera actors used their influence to urge women to vote.[22]

Shoma Munshi said the show has "simplicity and highly emotional content" and was noted for placing female characters in the historical tradition of a large joint family.[23]

Dubbed versions

The show was dubbed as Uravugal Thorarkadhai in Tamil on Star Vijay and as Pellante Noorella Panta in Telugu on Star Maa, both being discontinued after airing more than 1000 episodes.[24]

The show was dubbed in Malayalam under the title Akkareyanente Maanasam 2 on Asianet Plus and also in Tamil as Uravugal Thodarkadhai 2 on Star Vijay Super starting from episode 2075, but were discontinued within few months.
