It was announced in November 2021 that Martin Scorsese was set to direct a biopic about the rock band Grateful Dead for Apple TV+, with Jonah Hill cast to portray lead singer Jerry Garcia in addition to producing the film alongside Scorsese and Rick Yorn.[1] Hill stated he thought of the idea for the biopic upon seeing a picture of a young Garcia while browsing Instagram. Hill would present the idea to his manager Yorn, who suggested he approach Scorsese.[2]
