Ancient and medieval proponents edit

What if the pro-Flat Earth person was not modern? Cosmos Indicopleustes lived in the era of Justinian. Should he be categorized here?  — Mr. Guye (talk) (contribs)  16:53, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes. That Earth was not flat was already known since antiquity. To summarize the main article:

  • Pythagoras (c. 570-495 BC) and Parmenides (c. 515- after 450 BC) both believed that the Earth was spherical.
  • Artistotle (384-322 BC) both believed that the Earth was spherical, and produced an estimate of the Earth's circumference.
  • Eratosthenes (c. 276- 195 BC) both believed that the Earth was spherical, and produced a more accurate of the Earth's circumference. He also calculated the Earth's axial tilt, and its distance from the Sun. Dimadick (talk) 09:48, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
