Delete Wikipedia:Articles needing copy edit?

I stumbled across Wikipedia:Articles needing copy edit in the documentation for {{Copy edit}}. I think it is a remnant of some previous incarnation of our WikiProject. Should we delete it? – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:58, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Might as well. It was created with the edit summary "wikipedia space page to replace the category page". But the category page is there and seems to be in the best of health. Happy New Year. --Stfg (talk) 10:12, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
Yep, it's redundant to the cat page. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 12:03, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
I tagged it with the closest speedy deletion tag I could find. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:08, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
... and it's gone; thanks for noticing, Jonesey. Happy New Year and all the best, Miniapolis 18:07, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

End of year report

I've created the page and have added some suggestions of subjects to write about, and the usual facts and figures. I think there's a lot to write about this year, given the Guild's success in driving down the backlog, requests, etc. Figures in the table came from last year's page; I just moved them over. It's here. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 06:57, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for setting it up, Baffle; looks good! All the best, Miniapolis 14:04, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

2015 REQ stats so far

I've been playing with the archive and have deduced the following stats:

In 2015 so far (at 21:04 on 21:04, Wednesday, December 16, 2015 (UTC)) the Guild has dealt with 541 copy-editing requests (inc. those made in 2014); of these:
194 were for GAN; 121 were for FAC; 4 were for PR; 1 was for A-Class; 18 were for DYK; 13 were declined.
These figures were produced using Microsoft Word's find/replace function and some wikicode jiggery-pokery in my sandox. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong; I'll repeat this excercise on 1st Jan, if I'm in a fit state! :-D Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 21:29, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Baffle; it did seem like a lot :-). All the best, Miniapolis 23:27, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
FWIW, the 2013 and 2014 analyses I performed were on all requests submitted during the calendar year. I am planning to repeat this analysis for 2015 once all of our December requests are completed, presumably sometime in January given the current backlog. Baffle's stats will be a welcome addition to the numbers I have generated in the past. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:07, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks both; it's all useful data, and I like that you track the time from request to completion too. I'm sure a slight delay to the report won't hurt... ;-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 01:43, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

() I think the report is nearly ready; please feel free to copy-edit the text, correct any incorrect stats, and make and other necssary fixes. The cover is here. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 04:13, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

Both look great, Baffle, and thanks very much; I'll work on the plans for the year later today. All the best, Miniapolis 14:47, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
... and it's succinct but it's done; additions and corrections welcome. All the best, Miniapolis 19:54, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
I have added my edits to the report (after working through an edit conflict - sorry Baffle!). The only remaining question I have is about the backlog article counts, e.g. "twenty-one editors eliminated 178 articles from the backlog". I was unable to find a source for those numbers. The November 2015 number in particular is much too low. Help me understand what these numbers are trying to say. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:36, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
I used the events' barnstar pages, taking the totals from the "Article count" columns. I counted the number of editors maunally; editors who did nothing aren't given barnstars so that makes counting easier. I seperated requests by copying the drive page to MS Word, replacing *R with itself, noting the quantity replaced, then subctracting it from the total on the barnstars pages Nov 2015 for example. I'll look through them again a bit later. Stats taken directly from the backlog are inflated by the work of other editors.
So for the Nov drive there were 231 articles edited (according to barnstar page), 36 Requests marked *R. 231 - 36 = 195 so yes I ballsed up there; thanks for pointing that out. I'll go through the stats again over the next few days.
Sorry for any edit conflicts; I didn't get any. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:56, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the explanation. I would be more comfortable saying something like "21 editors took credit for removing 195 articles from the backlog", since many articles are removed during drives by editors who do a quick copy edit and don't take credit for it, remove a tag because it is no longer needed, or nominate an article for deletion. How does that sound?
The e/c was all my fault. I took about an hour to do my edits, in between doing other stuff, so by the time I got around to saving, your edits had already been submitted. I should have learned by now to edit in smaller chunks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:32, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
That sounds acceptable to me; I actually copied over the 2014 report as a template so much of the blitz and drive sections' text comes from there, and mathematics was never my strong point... ;-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 01:48, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, edits implemented in a slightly different form. I'm ready to ship this thing. What say the two of you? – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:46, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

() Sounds like a plan. You have the mass-message flag, right, Jonesey? If not (or if you prefer), I'll do it. All the best, Miniapolis 16:45, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

  Done. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:43, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

January barnstars calculated

The January drive barnstars have been calculated.

Twofingered Typist, can you please check your "oldest articles" count against this page? I think a few of your old pages may not have had the "*O" after the name, so they were not counted as old by the script. If you care, let us know here. (Resolved.) – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:59, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Barnstars can be given out for the January drive using {{GOCE award}}. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:21, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

February blitz

February blitz ideas? I'm thinking Requests, from Feb 21–27. It's a short month, so it's either next week (I will be on wikibreak for most of the week, if it matters) or the last week of February, after which we roll right into the March drive. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:38, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

The requests list is getting long again, so that sounds good. I'm glad it'll be the last week of the month, since I'll be on wikibreak this weekend. All the best, Miniapolis 14:55, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
Due to an uptick in RL-side things, I'll be reducing my activity for a few days after my timestamp; expect me back after le weekend. Requests do need blitzing again, if we run out how about a random backlog month? Either way I'm easy. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 05:04, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Done. Page created and ombox updated. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:36, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

March barnstar page

... is up. All the best, Miniapolis 17:03, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Good idea

This has merit, I think (and Baffle, I'm not asking you to do more work :-)). Thoughts? All the best, Miniapolis 13:53, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

I've replied there. cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 20:01, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
Me too, with a flourish. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:45, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

Wikibreak for Jonesey95

I will be on a wikibreak for a few days, so I won't be able to monitor any Guild pages, including the 00:00 UTC daily updates to the May drive. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:32, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

Collapse / (re)move list of historical coordinators?

I've notice the list of historical coordinators here is getting a little large (over one screen) and will only lengthen in time. Should it be collapsed, hidden or (re)moved, perhaps to a sub-page that could be linked? I'm in favour of collapsing it, but not vehemently so. Is there's a better / neater / more effective way of presenting the data? Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:11, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Collapsing seems good. Subpage OK. It would be a pity not to maintain any historical record, I think. --Stfg (talk) 09:42, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
I agree with Stfg and thanks for noticing, Baffle. All the best, Miniapolis 20:52, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks both; I agree we should keep a historical record of coordinators. I think a subpage might be needed in the future, but I don't think that time has come yet. I'll collapse the table tomorrow as I'm a little tired right now, so I'm off to knock up some Zs. ;-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 21:42, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
Looks good. The historical list serves as an indication that the project is alive and well. Some projects are defunct, and it's not always easy to tell. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:28, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Jonesey; I hope collapsing will suffice for a few more years... :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 01:37, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Lack of activity

Hi all. I feel I should explain my absence. My recent-ish lack of activity, guild-co-ordinating and copy-editing is caused by an uptick in meatspace activity, a long and busy weekend, and an odd preference for gardening and beer-drinking over hours staring at a VDU fixing dodgy prose. I'll be back on track later this week. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 01:16, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

Glad you're having fun in the real world :-). All the best, Miniapolis 13:28, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

June Newsletter

I've made a newsletter for June, mainly to promote the June elecion. The page is here; feel free to edit at will. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:02, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

Looks good, Baffle. All the best, Miniapolis 16:56, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks; unless there's anything else to add of fix, it's ready to go (maybe you want to wait for blitz dates). Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:21, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
I wouldn't mind waiting until the blitz dates and topic are settled. Unless someone else wants to take the lead, I'll pick 'em by the end of the weekend. If I haven't gotten to it, let's send the newsletter anyway. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:20, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
I have added the blitz info and given the whole thing a spit-shine. I think it's ready to go. I will send it if there are no objections. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:24, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
I'm happy with that; thanks for updating it. Let the presses roll! :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:37, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

June blitz

The June blitz is mostly set up. We just need a topic and dates. I would prefer June 12–18, and one topic (video games) has been suggested already. It would be good to have a second topic to balance video games for editors who prefer a different type of article. Thoughts? – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:22, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

The requests page is getting long again; maybe we can use that as a backup (and I, for one, would rather work on that).  All the best, Miniapolis 13:23, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Suggest geography, broadly construed. ;-) Baffle gab1978 (talk) 01:11, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good to me; a lot of location articles need copyediting, and this would prevent the usual rush jobs on requests during a blitz.  All the best, Miniapolis 13:57, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
The blitz is all set up. I had to limit the scope of the geography articles because there are so many. See the talk page for my arbitrary choices about that. Corrections are welcome. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:10, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
There should be plenty there to keep us busy for a week. I chose geography off the top of my head; I had no clue there were so many geography articles in the backlog! Thanks Jonesey, Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:10, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
There are always a ton of articles for communities in India, for some reason. I was unable to figure out a way to limit the scope to geography using catscan, so I chose articles related to specific countries. That gets us people, places, media, and other fun stuff from those places. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:38, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for setting up the blitz page, Jonesey95. Two video-game articles (Jenny's Journeys and Dream League Soccer 16) are at AfD, though, and I think under the circumstances should be removed from the list since we have enough other work to do. Thoughts? All the best, Miniapolis 13:34, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Also, I can't find the collapsed list of Asia-related articles mentioned on the blitz page. Sorry for nitpicking and all the best, Miniapolis 13:39, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
I'm not worried about the AfDs, which are both very short. If they are still around at the start of the blitz, we can deal with them quickly, one way or the other. I'll refresh the article list shortly before the blitz anyway, as the query results will probably change a bit between now and then.
As for the article list, I created a collapsible section of the page with two columns. The left column shows 33 video game articles, and the right column shows 28 Asia-related articles. Are you seeing the same thing I am seeing? – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:56, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Aha, now I see them both. Thanks a lot and all the best, Miniapolis 23:27, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Phew, that's a relief. I was worried that my wikicode for the hiding and the columns was not working right or something. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:19, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Blitz articles re-tagged

Coords, I have re-tagged most of the articles copy-edited by one editor and notified that editor. Look at the diffs and the resulting articles to see why. I welcome disagreement and differing perspectives and will provide specific examples if you want them. See the sentence beginning "An S-TV based ..." for a typical example. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:40, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing, Jonesey, and for doing an unpleasant (but sometimes necessary—I don't know why contests do this to people) job. All the best, Miniapolis 13:28, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
Wait a minute; I checked your diff after my previous post (open mouth, insert foot) and don't see a problem with those edits. Am I missing something? Miniapolis 13:31, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
Finally checked that sentence, and yup. Fast and sloppy (with possible language-competency issues), but we don't want to WP:BITE since we need all the help we can get.  Miniapolis 13:36, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
I know. It was no fun, but the articles still need considerable help with basic prose. It wasn't just obscure MOS stuff or citation formats. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:05, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
If Baltistan (on which I'm working) is any indication, you're right. All the best, Miniapolis 22:51, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Dust-to-Digital

Does Dust-to-Digital need copyediting and cleanup, or just making tables as a matter of cleanup? I think copyediting is not needed.--DThomsen8 (talk) 23:37, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

Yes it does need a c/e; it's full of promo-waffle, and it's currently using British-style grammar that treats groups of individuals (in this case the company) as plural. Drifting into cleanup territory, the "Discography" could be removed, we don't need to know everything the company has ever released, and certainly remove the external links on titles. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:01, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
I will remove the Discography now, and await the July Drive for copyediting. --DThomsen8 (talk) 14:25, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
It reads like the script of a soap opera. "In February 1999, Lance Ledbetter set out on a search for rare recordings of gospel music." it could all definitely use a major rewrite. KieranTribe 14:17, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

July newsletter

I maked a July newsletter. Please feel free to do corrections and fixes before the presses roll. Cheese, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 22:51, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Great job as always, Baffle (thanks for the mention), and enjoy your sabbatical. All the best, Miniapolis 23:59, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
No worries Miniapolis; welcome to the Hall of Fame, and enjoy your well-earned rest too. :-) Congratulations and welcome to our new coordinators Corinne and Tdslk, and thanks to Jonesey95 for continuing as our very capable lead. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:29, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
I hit it with the anti-typo brush. I think it's ready to go. Corinne and Tdslk, do you have any input? – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:33, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Looks good! My main thought is that if there is one thing we want people to do after reading the newsletter, it is to participate in the July drive. If so, I feel like it might help if we changed the "Drive sign-up" link at the bottom to something more active, like "Join the Drive!" What do you think? Tdslk (talk) 00:56, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
That sounds like a good idea; I copied the link from an old NL an thought it looked good so i left it there. Welcome. :-) Baffle gab1978 (talk) 01:04, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm looking forward to it! Tdslk (talk) 01:06, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Remember me? Apologies...

Hi everyone! Long lost ex-coordinator here... My sincerest apologies for dropping off of the face of the Wiki-Earth last summer, right in the middle of my term. As happens often in Wiki it seems, real life took a hold of me. Being a grad student will do that to you...

What have a learned? A couple things:

  • I love the GOCE and want to stick around doing backlogs and requests, if you will have me.
  • Clearly my life does not warrant, at least currently, any long-term Wiki commitments. I've realized that's OK though, and I look forward to helping here and there when I can.

I just can't get rid of this place...

Anyways, I hope you are all well. Currently I am in Mexico City in a language immersion program, but I will be around. Thank you all for the work you do for the Guild and the encyclopedia! -Pax Verbum 21:16, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Good to see you again, and we need all the help we can get (some things never change :-)). Enjoy the course and all the best, Miniapolis 01:48, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
¡Hola! Join us for the drives and blitzes. We've got a drive going on right now, and we always need more good copy editors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:37, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
Thank you all for the warm re-welcome... Taking a look at the drive now... -Pax Verbum 03:22, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes! Join the drive! Every article makes a difference. Tdslk (talk) 15:28, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Welcome back, Pax. I did the same thing, don't worry! (I've even gone and changed my username) >.< Keira1996 14:18, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Archiving requests

Guys n gals: I strongly suggest you agree who is going to archive requests and how often. Believe me, from long experience, if you do it promptly it's a small thing, but once you let it build up, it becomes a real chore. Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 15:41, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

When I was coordinator, I breezed through the page once a day; it only takes a few minutes. I'll check the page and if there's a pile, I'll do a few; Stfg, maybe you can do the same. All the best, Miniapolis 16:36, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
Uh? That's what I used to do, but I'm not normally in this loop any more. I raised this because I noticed that archiving hadn't been done for several days, and I archived nine this afternoon, but I won't normally be doing it. --Stfg (talk) 19:44, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
I'll start checking for these every day or so. Thanks for alerting us! Tdslk (talk) 22:45, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
When I try to edit the request archive it causes my browser to crash. Does anyone else have this problem? Tdslk (talk) 02:41, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
It's OK for me (I've just archive Cheers (Season 7)). I'm using IE11. Has this been going on for long? If so, maybe WP:VPT can help? --Stfg (talk) 11:33, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
We heard similar things last year. I have split the list into two halves, to be rejoined at the end of the year once we are done editing the page (because splitting the list breaks page sorting, which we eventually want to have working). Editing of the second half section should be much more responsive than editing the whole page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:53, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Jonesey; I was starting to have trouble too, and think it's because we archive more requests than we used to (and last year, my archiving didn't get slow until later in the year :-)). The archive page is the only one that gives me grief. All the best, Miniapolis 16:58, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! Tdslk (talk) 18:31, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

End of July tasks

Hi Jonesey95 and Corinne, We've got our end-of-the-month tasks to do, don't we? I can do the word count totals for the July drive, if that's okay. Would someone like to write-up a newsletter? Tdslk (talk) 18:41, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

I'd be glad to work on it, or help. I can't work on it until tomorrow, though.  – Corinne (talk) 20:26, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Let Jonesey create the barnstar page first, since he runs Torchiest's script; trying to figure out all those plus-50-percents manually is the HTH :-). As for the newsletter, when the dust settles on the drive (and, I presume, a blitz is in the works) just work from the previous newsletter. All the best, Miniapolis 21:58, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
I don't have access to a computer that can run the script until August 14. It looks like Tdslk created the table – did you do that by hand or with a script, or ??? How much should we trust your math? When I do it by hand or with a spreadsheet, I always make errors.
I have put the leaderboard on the barnstar page and updated it based on the table, but I didn't check the table for accuracy.
Go ahead and work up a newsletter. I'll think about a blitz RSN. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:43, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
With the Olympics coming up, what about sports or something related? And to balance it out, we could do something like astronomy (full disclosure: I love astronomy, so I'm not exactly unbiased in that respect). -Pax Verbum 23:32, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
I like astronomy too, but I don't think there are enough tagged articles on it for a drive. I checked PetScan and found 25 results, most of which were actually sci-fi TV shows. Sports had 150 results, with a higher fraction looking like they were actually sports-related. Tdslk (talk) 01:09, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
How many hits do we normally look for in a topic? -Pax Verbum 02:21, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
By hand. There's a script?! Tdslk (talk) 00:36, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
There's a script :-), but Jonesey is much better with it than I am. Ask Torchiest (who wrote it) to send it to you with his documentation; again, since I find it harrowing to run the damn thing it's better if he advises you. All the best, Miniapolis 13:40, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
All barnstars have been given out, except my own. I can get you the script in about ten days, with documentation. I have improved a bit on Torchiest's code and instructions, making it a little easier for a mediocre coder like me to handle. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:45, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
I've given Jonesey his, to make sure it isn't overlooked. (Hope I did it right. It's been a while!) --Stfg (talk) 15:27, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

This page (created by Jonesey, bless his heart) is a godsend; a job that used to take hours is now a piece of cake. All the best, Miniapolis 01:52, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

August blitz

Hey Jonesey and Corinne, We should start thinking about our August drive! I like the idea mentioned above about it being sports focused. We could call it "Cleaning Up After the Olympics" and start it on Sunday. What do you think? Tdslk (talk) 15:11, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I was just thinking about this today. It needs to start on Sunday, seven days from now, for us to get it in by the end of the month.
Here are 14 articles in a subcategory of Category:Olympic Games. We probably need at least 60 articles for a blitz, though. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:10, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
I was thinking of opening it to all things sports; PetScan returns 153 articles. After paring those down to the ones that are truly sports related, we'd probably have a bit over 60. Tdslk (talk) 18:52, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Do you want to try creating the blitz page using the template that I created? It's {{GOCE-new-blitz-page}}. You can try it out in your sandbox first if you want to make sure you know how it works. Once you create the page, you can create a blank article list from an early version of the June 2016 blitz. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:57, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
I made the blitz page. I'll work on the article list later today. Tdslk (talk) 15:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
People are harder than places or games. Can you balance the list?

I will be away from WP for the next 48 hours. Please make sure that the blitz gets started. I think all we need is a list of articles. If one fails to materialize for some reason, change the theme to Requests, find the last blitz that worked on Requests, and copy the appropriate text from that archived blitz page. Thanks, and see you in a while! – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:16, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

I have given out all of the August blitz barnstars except my own. Since we are already in September, the easiest way to make one for me is to copy the section from User talk:Chickadee46, change the user name, and add your own signature. Thanks! – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:23, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
I gave you your blitz award. Thanks for taking care of the rest! Tdslk (talk) 22:40, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Initial September newsletter

I have whipped up a September newsletter. I realized as I was writing it that I haven't given out the August blitz barnstars yet. I'll get right on that.

Please proof and edit the newsletter for me. I wrote it very quickly and it no doubt contains errors. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:03, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

The newsletter looks good to me! Tdslk (talk) 22:13, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Request for List of frigates of India

Hi coordinators,

WP:GOCER#List of frigates of India has been taken up by an editor, who has told the requester that the request is done.

However, what the editor has done is merely to centre some table column headings, using a very clumsy method. He hasn't touched the prose, which still has grammar errors and rather poor flow. We need to ensure that this request can be taken up by a more experienced copy editor.

The editor who has done this is very young and very well-meaning, but has a habit of seriously overstepping his competence level and getting himself into trouble because of it. His talk page is full of experienced editors telling him more or less fiercely to "slow down". If possible, you might want to consider gently asking him to refrain from servicing the requests page, at least.

Simon --Stfg (talk) 14:34, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Follow up. The requester has actually asked him to look at the prose, so I intervened to call him off in favour of a more experienced copy editor. Not nice, but I'm afraid necessary. --Stfg (talk) 15:10, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Here's a link to a related discussion. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:06, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Pinging VarunFEB2003 to let the editor know that his/her edits are being discussed here. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:08, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
I have left a note on the editor's talk page. I have also restored the lead sentence, because the following paragraph does not yet adequately summarize the article's topic. A copy editor can rewrite the lead to make it conform to WP guidelines. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:24, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Oh OK Jonesey. I did actually look at several FLs before removing it, though, and it seemed that very few actually bother to restate what is already evident from the title. The present one seems to me merely to restate what is obvious from the title, and some meta-information about the order of presentation. But hey, whatever.
Since you have pinged him, I will add that Varun, whom I have known on-wiki for a few weeks, never acts out of "malevolence". He is youthfully enthusiastic, frequently oversteps his abilities, and needs to learn not to do so, but he is a nice guy. --Stfg (talk) 18:57, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

September drive barnstars

Do any of my fellow coordinators want to try their hand at giving out the September drive barnstars? It's easy and fun!

The page is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/September 2016/Barnstars. I have checked the calculations and the leaderboard, so it's ready to go.

To give out stars, visit the editor's talk page, create a new section with a title like "September 2016 GOCE drive awards", and then paste in appropriate versions of the {{GOCE award}} template. Read the "Examples" section of the template's documentation to understand how to use it. If the documentation is not clear, or if you have any questions, either post here or update the documentation.

Once you have given out a barnstar, add a {{y}} template after the editor's name (for the leaderboard awards) or the participation award name (for the "Totals" table) on the Barnstars page so that we can track whose awards have been delivered. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:22, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

I'll get started on this! Tdslk (talk) 22:34, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
Finished, except for myself. I assume it's bad form to self-award. Tdslk (talk) 23:20, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
  Done. Good work. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:53, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

October blitz

I have created an October blitz page and set some dates and a theme. It's time to do Requests again, since the queue is getting a bit long. Comments and page cleanup are welcome. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:20, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Delete a set of old LOCE pages?

I stumbled across the following subpages of our project that appear to be old pages that have since been updated and moved, or an experiment that was abandoned. They were last actively edited in 2007 and 2008. I propose that we should delete these pages after making sure that they are not used.

Does anyone know anything about these pages and if they might still be active somehow? If we choose to delete them, we should probably blank them first to make sure that they do not break any active project pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:59, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

I think you should go ahead as suggested. Thanks for the good work. — BroVic (talk) 16:57, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
I've G6ed them as uncontroversial housekeeping. Thanks for noticing, Jonesey, and all the best, Miniapolis 22:41, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

October blitz barnstars

I have created the October blitz barnstars table. Is anyone willing to check it and give out the stars? I created it manually from the blitz page, so it may have errors. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:28, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

I had some energy tonight, so I checked the numbers and gave out all of the barnstars except my own. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:01, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
Sorry I didn't respond to this earlier. Thanks for taking care of the awards and I've given you your own well-earned barnstar. Tdslk (talk) 02:23, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

November drive wrap-up

I have created and checked the Barnstar page if any other coordinators want to give out barnstars.

We should definitely put out a short newsletter as well, given our new record low in the backlog and the coordinator nominations/voting. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:39, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

I'll get to work on the barnstars. And I definitely agree about the newsletter, the last drive was something to celebrate! Tdslk (talk) 00:21, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Barnstars done (except mine). Tdslk (talk) 01:14, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Nice work. I hit your talk page, so I think we're done. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:16, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

October newsletter draft

Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletters/October 2016 is ready for proofreading. It should go out after blitz barnstars are distributed, but before the November drive starts. Thanks, everyone! – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:44, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Did this ever go out? It doesn't look like it. Bad job by me. I'll add the content to the December newsletter. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:10, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

December newsletter

Started here. Please copy-edit, add, subtract, comment. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:16, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Comments? I'll push this out as soon as I have a blitz page created. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:07, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

December blitz?

Ideas for the December blitz? There are plenty of Requests, so we could do that again. We should do it December 11–17 to avoid conflicting with the holidays that are celebrated by (I assume) most of us (but, I assume, not all of us). – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:16, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Comments? We need to create the page soon. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:07, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
I have created the December blitz, to start in about 72 hours. Thinking that we might run out of Requests, I included our oldest backlog month in the blitz. As of right now, that is about 50 articles total. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:27, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
