New Year's Day in the Julian calendar: Old New Year edit

May I suggest a link to Old New Year, instead of New Year? --199.71.174.100 (talk) 00:44, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Addendum: Bodyline removed because the related Adelaide leak is TFA for 2013. Replaced with Árpád dynasty (8th appearance, last in 2011). howcheng {chat} 05:47, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Lesley Whittle event does not meet several of the key Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries#Criteria for listing items on this set of pages: it is not a significant anniversary (1), it is not a holiday/observance (2), it is not of "of moderate to great historical significance" (3), and it is a 20th century anglosphere article (9). Given this, I propose removing it because it does not contribute sufficiently to the mix of topics that can be on the main page and including a somewhat negative topic about a women when it does not fulfil the criteria very well could, unintentionally, be unconscious bias on Wikipedia. Ultimately, as this is a subjective judgement, I feel the selected anniversaries would be improved by removing this event. Whizz40 (talk) 20:39, 12 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

According to the article, the case "dominated national headlines for 11 months" so that appears to signify it was a big deal in the UK at the time. There are other examples of "rich person is kidnapped" articles appearing on OTD, such as Patty Hearst and John Paul Getty III. As far as being a 20th-century Anglosphere article, that's only a consideration for maintaining the variety of items that appear each year. This year, Leslie White has been taken out, but it will show up again in the future. howcheng {chat} 19:03, 13 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Noted, although I did not see any wider social or institutional consequences described in the Whittle article, whereas there are in the other two articles. The Whittle article does seem to be less notable than the other two, although the article cites support including it - the BBC have it as an 'on this day' item. For interest, page views in the last 30 days are: 1243 for Whittle, 6427 for Getty and 32128 for Hearst, which clearly is of note due to the stockholm syndrome and presidential pardons. Human Be-In I have sourced more references and intend to continue checking to see if more appropriate ones can be found. I am hoping that this will make the article suitable for inclusion on the main page tomorrow. It is the 50 anniversary of what was a significant event for the worldwide counter-culture and for mainstream press at the time, particularly being seen as the first event of the year of the original "Summer of Love" 1967. If any more references or work on the page is needed for inclusion please indicate and I'll be happy to do what I can.BorisAndDoris (talk) 19:20, 13 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Done I've noted that this is a floating date item, and copied it to the Jan 15 page for future consideration. — xaosflux Talk 16:54, 15 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
