Reviewer group requested in Bugzilla

edit

Hi folks, the reviewer group has been requested in Bugzilla as bug 23922

..and that request was filled earlier today. -- RobLa (talk) 23:57, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Setting up some practice space

edit

I am currently setting up some practice opportunities at the flagged revisions testwiki for new reviewers to try out the tools. As soon as this is all lined up, I will start activating the permissions here. It's important for folks to see what the fancy buttons do in a fairly realistic setting, before starting to work on live articles. Risker (talk) 06:35, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

We'll also have testing pages in WP space. Cenarium (talk) 13:39, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, very good idea. Aaroncrick TALK 11:34, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

For those who are interested in trying things out, you can go to http://flaggedrevs.labs.wikimedia.org, create an account, and go to Talk:Main Page on that site to ask for reviewer permissions. They have now been configured. I've set up a few pages with some pending edits (more will be coming later when I have time), and you can test out the features. Risker (talk) 21:19, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tried fixing the mdashes per MoS on Regulamentul Organic but, apparently, the edit has to be reviewed? Interesting. Good to see how it works, and thanks for setting up the test pages. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 21:48, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

User Courcelles' bunch of approvals don't seem to have been included in Archive 1, including me. Thanks. Tony (talk) 05:18, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Because most of those people didn't request it here. The only people in the archive are those who've requested it here and been approved (or disapproved, but I've yet to see that happen). Many admins have been giving it out to editors they know and many editors have just been asking for it on the talk pages of admins they know, rather like rollback. I requested here (second to do so). If it's inconsequential—i.e., not going to be used as a mailing list or to check on who's who—don't worry. Tony (talk) 12:17, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Done I added the early grantings from Courcelles to the archive thanks to the page history. My that was a lot of fun checking to make sure i didn't add a duplicate entry. It seems that only those cleared before the archive was created were missing. [1] My apologies if i have missed someone from later on. Those added are are myself, fetchcomms, sephia karta, Tony1, Nikkimaria, Mjroots2, Mkativerata, Dabomb87, Falcorian, LtPowers, Mikemoral, TreasuryTag, Anna Lincoln, Favonian, Phil Bridger, Tryptofish, and LiberalFascist. delirious & lost~talk to her~ 03:59, 18 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is there a way to stop a redlink to an erroneous "archive" from showing up on the main permissions page, or is this intentional? N/A0 05:48, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Two ways- write out the full link or stick it in noninclude tags. I'm lazy and the archive is temporary (until we can get a proper archiving system going when things have calmed down) so I went with the latter. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 06:00, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

A few practicalities?

edit

Perhaps I've missed these links; but if I haven't, may I suggest the following?

  1. A list of the users who are running the trial (handy for communication, feedback, etc).
  2. A formal page in which reviewers can provide feedback and ask queries, right from the start.
  3. A list of the pages that are in the trial.

The Help page doesn't seem to have such links.

I guess I'm likely to watchlist a few controversial pages so I can get some practice and observe how other reviewers are dealing with the facility. Is this a good strategy? Tony (talk) 12:25, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just for the links, most of the activity seems to be at WP:REVIEWER and its talk page. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:43, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Userbox

edit

Has a userbox been created yet for those with Reviewer rights? It would probably be like the Template:User wikipedia/rollback userbox, with a category added too. - BilCat (talk) 17:14, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well we have one that just says "this user is a Wikipedian", I think 100% of Wikipedians would fit into that! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:16, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
A userbox, sure, but I'm fairly certain we don't have such a category- and that if we did, it wouldn't survive CFD. Courcelles (talk) 22:19, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes but do we have a userbox that says - "This user is not a Wikipedian but would like to be one someday" - maybe one shoud be created? Just a thought and you my slap me if you so wish :-) --Wintonian (talk) 00:25, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I updated the user box to make use of the logo that is found on the Polish WP pl:Szablon:User redaktor, Polish WikiSource wikisource:pl:Szablon:User redaktor, and German WP de:User:✓/Vorlagen/Sichter user boxes for their comparable "Editor" right. It may go by a different name here but it is essentially the same thing and for continuity it seemed appropriate to use it rather than a patroller logo. delirious & lost~talk to her~ 05:46, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Script for easy granting of reviewer

edit
// simple script to enable the reviewer bit and leave the user a note

MakeReviewerConfig = {
groupReason : "User can be trusted with reviewer",
    sectionHeader : "Reviewer granted",
    sectionBody : "{{subst\:reviewer-notice}} ~~\~~"
};

importScript("User:Amalthea/MakeReviewer.js");

Config can be changed or omitted, etc. It adds a button along the top of the screen called "make reviewer". If user doesn't have right, it grants it, and in either case, it leaves the message. –xenotalk 20:42, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can someone explain why I was declined reviewer status?

Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Reviewer/Declined archive 1#User:Anthonyhcole There is nothing in my record to indicate I can't recognize vandalism, or BLP or copyright violations; quite the contrary, actually. It is very clear from the AN/I referred to by the declining admin that I understand NLT - in fact I made the most significant recent change to the policy. This trial has been somewhat haphazard from the start, with discussions on it occurring pretty much everywhere. It definitely could have been handled better. –xenotalk 15:36, 30 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Trial? What on earth leads you to believe this is a trial? This is here to stay, I suggest you get used to that idea and the attendant admin abuse that is going to come with it.  Giacomo  21:07, 30 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps the wording on Wikipedia:Pending changes? It very clearly states, "Pending changes is a new tool undergoing a two-month trial on the English Wikipedia." (emphasis added) ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:00, 1 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I doubt very much it will be a trial, it has been embraced too strenuously by too many for that. Many Admins do not give up any of their eagerly grasped and clawed new shiny buttons easily.  Giacomo  07:28, 1 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
It very well may end up being permanent. Regardless of the eventuality, it is currently a trial. Denying that doesn't make it any less so. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:02, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not autoconfirmed?

edit

I tried to add myself to the request list, but upon confirming my edit I was given the notice 'Note: This page has been semi-protected so that only autoconfirmed users can edit it.' I checked the autoconfirmed users information, and I'm pretty sure I pass for a user who should be autoconfirmed. Can anyone please help me by explaining why I am not one? Thanks. Jack?! 23:16, 4 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

An auto confirmed user is someone who has been a wiki user for 4 days and has more than 10 edits. That notice will always show up even if you are auto confirmed. Joe Gazz84 (user)(talk)(contribs) 23:24, 4 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oh I see! This autoconfirmed thing is reasonably new to me so I was a bit confused when I saw the message but also had to click save twice (because no headline was required). Sorry and thanks, now added my request. Jack?! 23:32, 4 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Third party requests

edit

Can someone point me to the discussion where third-party requests were decided against? I'm a little concerned that I'm missing some part of this, given that somewhere between me looking silly for questioning a third party request three weeks ago and HJM being made to look silly for granting a third party request today something definitely changed! I'm not arguing with the direction it went in - I agree that people should ask for rights when they feel they want it - but I'm just wanting to make sure I'm not oblivious to things I should be aware of. ~ mazca talk 21:38, 9 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, MZM is on the list of people who generally don't want to be given reviewer rights, so that might have caused the difference you noticed. Nikkimaria (talk) 22:33, 9 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I saw that one, but I got the impression that third-party requests in general were suddenly not the done thing. I'm just kind of concerned that discussions about granting reviewer rights are going on somewhere I'm missing - as a convenient example, I wouldn't have been aware of that lurking page in "database reports" either, and could have made the same mistake. ~ mazca talk 22:37, 9 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well personally, I wouldn't grant a 3rd party request unless there was confirmation that the user actually wanted the permission. The fact that this was for MZM and I'm aware that he has some strong opinions on the matter removed any doubt. —DoRD (talk) 22:46, 9 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

How do I remove reviewer rights from an editor

edit

Another thing I don't know, sigh. How do I remove reviewer rights? Is there an Admin guide to this somewhere? Thanks. Dougweller (talk) 07:15, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I presume a long block history and pov editing are enough to remove something that probably shouldn't have been granted anyway? Dougweller (talk) 09:33, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Or maybe not. It's been suggested that a history of being blocked for edit-warring is not a reason not to grant reviewer rights. That clearly is the case in practice - and I rush to say that I'm not blaming anyone for doing this, just questioning the wisdom of it. If the consensus is this is not a reason not to grant reviewer rights, I'll accept that consensus. Dougweller (talk) 13:40, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
The consensus is, during the test, that since the bit effectively restores the rights autoconfirmed users had prior to pending changes, to be rather liberal in its application. After the test concludes, and if pending changes is implemented officially, who knows? —DoRD (talk) 14:19, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Dougweller (talk) 14:57, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, see Wikipedia talk:Reviewing/Archive 2#On denying requests for reviewer permission for more. The same basic argument applies to removing the rights already in place. –xenotalk 20:08, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Furthermore, you can't gain reviewer status unless you have an autoconfirmed account (your account is at least 4 days old and has 10 legitimate edits); more likely, though, you need to accumulate a much larger bank of edits to show that you can be trusted with the tool.
