Publisher Extra no longer available

Back when access was still account based, we would get access to all Publisher Extra features and publications. Is there a way to access this using the proxy method, or is it something that is no longer available? Yeeno (talk) 10:16, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Hmm, works for me. I was able to browse the 03 Jul 1978 Boston Globe, which I believe is a Publisher Extra feature. Maybe try tossing the cookies in your browser? See also links at the bottom of Wikipedia:Newspapers.com#Using_the_"Clipping"_function. Cxbrx (talk) 03:21, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

@Teblick @Cxbrx: I was able to access my page while logged in by replacing newspage in the url with image. For example, if I access https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/newspage/436990449/, I run into a paywall, but https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/image/436990449/ works fine. This is happening to me now, as of last night (so 5 April 2024). Accessing as usual through TWL, I can't see any search results, they all take me to the "Upgrade to a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page" popup. Sounds like the same issue for me, too. By chance, are/were you operating through Safari on MacOS? The paywall pops up when I try to load up The Journal (Newcastle upon Tyne) on Safari - my older clippings are loading just fine - but on Google Chrome, the popup doesn't appear. Is it just me or does the site load much more slowly via the new URL through the Wikipedia Library? When I was using plain old Newspapers.com, it seemed to go much quicker and there were fewer errors. Now it seems I have to wait for search results and images to load and sometimes have to reload them after my first effort fails. I'm not sure if this is a me problem or if this is universal. @Denniscabrams: I've never really noticed any significant issues, although it will inherently be slightly slower as your requests have to go through the Wikipedia Library as a sort of middleman before reaching the Newspapers.com servers. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 20:42, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

You're not alone, Dennis. I find it to be much slower than when I had a Newspapers.com subscription. Not so much slower that I am suddenly interested in forking out $230 AUD a year for a Publisher Extra subscription again, but it definitely impacts the speed of work. Extra Subscription error message

It probably has something to do with all the changes happening on the site, but today every search result ends up with the error "Upgrade to a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page". I haven't been able to access Newspapers.com articles since at least 24 April. I've been forced to use the California Digital Newspaper Database for my research, but that doesn't have all my sources and is limited to California.– Whaleyland (Talk • Contributions) 12:04, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

Samwalton9 (WMF) before I posted here I cleared the oclc cookies because you told me to do that last time. I honestly think it had to do with all the changes they are making on the site because the next day everything was back to normal, except I couldn't pull up anything in "My Clippings", but I could find them in "All Clippings". Then the day after that my clippings returned. I do wish they would finish whatever upgrades they are doing. But still am very grateful for the access. SusunW (talk) 14:52, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Can't Clip articles.

I have access to Newspapers.com through my Ancestry account, but I don't have Publishers Extra and I'm not going to get it because I ONLY use Newspapers.com for references in Wikipedia articles.

Previously, I was able to clip any articles through my Wikipedia Library account after signing in to Newspapers with my Ancestry account. For over a week now, that hasn't worked. So I tried something else.

I log into my Wikipedia library account and go to Newspapers.com. I pick an article and try to make a clipping. When I'm prompted to log in or create a new account, I try to create a new one. Then I get a message, "There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support." This has been happening for over a week. The suggestion to clear cookies was a very good one. However, that didn't change anything.

What should I do? I know there is a site to contact Wikipedia tech support so they can contact Newspapers.com, but where can I find that?

Newspapers.com is critical to creating solid references readers can use to verify articles. You would not BELIEVE the nonsense I've found in claims that had sources that were supposedly unverifiable. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 03:28, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

@Oona Wikiwalker I believe Ancestry logins are currently broken for Newspapers.com (T322916). In the meantime you'll want to register a new account (not within the library), and then log into that from within the library. Is there a way to sign up for a free account without getting roped into a free trial? I don't know what'll happen at the end of the trial. (Internet outages, work demands, life demands.) Error message

@Nick Number: Over the past week, on clicking "View Clip" after saving, the clipped article appears for a second and is then replaced by the message, "This page is not available. This page is pending publication, has been removed or moved to a new location." However, this does not prevent the URL from being converted to WP format where it works fine. @DMBanks1: I've been getting that too. It has been slightly annoying (especially when citing more than usual for the Reliability drive), but clicking the bookmarklet does make it go away, so I've mostly been ignoring it. Nick Number (talk) 16:30, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Just adding a +1 to this thread, the site loads correctly but every search results in "There was a problem loading the search results. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact us." I've deleted all OCLC cookies, all Newspapers.com cookies, even the Wikipedia Library cookies. (Nick Number) -- Zanimum (talk) 23:50, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

I'm getting both of the errors described in this thread as well. Chrome and Firefox, both mobile and desktop.

@Jweiss11: see here for details about the bookmarklet that Nick Number created. Tl;dr: create a bookmark and paste the following code in the URL field:

I see that error when I load the login page. If I then still enter my U/P and press enter, it additionally gives the error: "There was a problem verifying you are not a robot. Please try again or refresh the page." PK-WIKI (talk) 21:01, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

Given that:

• Many of the recurring issues, including this one, seem to be with their bot-detection system, and of them seem to be with the OCLC proxy system.
• The OCLC proxy system is presumably used by other institutional customers (libraries etc) who are likely a substantial portion of their customer base, and
• Wikipedia Library access is probably a very small percentage of their traffic (i.e, no strong incentive to frustrate us into becoming individual paying users), and may well function as a loss leader because clips we make are linked from a popular public website
• Sending Wikipedia Library traffic through their existing OCLC proxy is likely much simpler for them than having to individually activate free accounts as was previously done

I would tend to suspect that this is not a deliberate attempt by the site to exclude us. More likely it is one or more of:

• They're having larger problems with the OCLC proxy system as a whole and customer support is already up to their ears
• Because Wikipedia Library users have different characteristics than a typical institutional customer (more spread out in geography and time zone versus a city or university library's users would be, for example), they may be more likely to trigger the bot-detection systems
• As a relatively minor customer, Wikipedia Library may not be a high priority for support, especially if unique fixes are needed

While the frequent interruptions are frustrating, and I hope Wikipedia Library staff are able to work with Newspapers.com to fix these issues, I doubt this is deliberate malice. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:18, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

@Pi.1415926535: Since you have a better grasp of the issue than most, when do you expect the clipping function to be restored? Should we be assuming it is not imminent. I was two clippings away from doing a substantial article update 9 days ago. Should we just be publishing article changes with the newspaper citations but no clippings?
