Medical schools in 19th century Saint Petersburg

While writing a new article (Józef Mianowski), I found two schools in Polish sources I am having trouble translating for Wikipedia: Medical-Chirurgical Academy in Saint Petersburg and II Hospital of Land Forces. Images up for deletion

A couple of historical photos used in quite important articles are up for deletion due to violations of fair use rationales. The cited problem is that the photos themselves are not iconic enough. I have commented on one but have not looked at others. "Active measures" article

I suspect that I will not be able to handle the "Active measures" article alone. This is a chaotic list of Cheka---KGB-FSB operations. IMO the first thing is to rename the article into something meaningful for English reader. Every intelligence service has covert operations against the adversaries of their state and politics. No big deal. As a first step, at least various unproved allegations and other speculation must be removed: it is enough proved cases to serve as examples. Since meta over a year does nothing to close this incubator of ethnic hatred, I suggest to initiate the english wikipedia ban on wikilinks to ru-sib. User Israeli pics

It looks to me user Israeli was uploading pics that all of them wasn't made by him. And he was targeting them as self-made with PD release. Two my pictures were deleted some time ago because of my request. Now I see also several pictures of other authors, that are not him definitely. Russian wikiProjects

Ive seen recently articles (talk pages) are tagged with both {{WikiProject Russia}} and {{WikiProject Russian History}}. IMO it is an overkill and unnecessary clutter.

Please take a look at wikiProj Maths template, e.g., inTalk:Graph property. It has a parameter called "field". In our case the project is "Russia", with subproject/subfield "Russian history".

Two articles that need a third (!) opinion.

WP:OR. WP:SYN. WP:FRINGE. WP:UNDUE. I kid you not.

  • Operation Sarindar coatrack for all sorts of allegations by Ion Mihai Pacepa - also a last stand of the "Iraq had WMD!" warriors. Should be merged with the article on the author of these allegations.
  • Communist terrorism Another coatrack which both refers to actions by terrorist gangs claiming to be communist (somehow the IRA is missing in that funny list of usual suspects), and state terrorism as practised by communist states. Should be renamed to reflect this, or split up.

As of now, only two Western authors are trying to defend some sort of rationality at those two pages.--Pan Gerwazy 10:35, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Russian martial arts

Could you please help with the Russian martial arts thing?

I will tell you the problems:

1. Russian martial arts article needs referencing, and i couldn't find thise.

2. There are articles about martial arts in Russian that need to be translated to English. After translated to English, they also need to be referenced and expanded (the demends on the English Wikipedia are higher). Those articles are: [1], [2], [3].

Siberian Nort: new developments to watch out for

Here someone is suggesting that one of the proponents of Zalotarëv be made an admin. [4]

Well, we will see. In any case, he was still editing the Dutch article on Siberisch very recently, and trying to restore the volgota link I deleted [5]. I have posted the text where Zolotaryov conceded it was all a joke on the talk page of the Dutch Siberian article and informed the new but still small Wikiproject Russia there. (Also answering your later remark) I do not remember the volgota link in English, but it definitely was in the Dutch and Ukrainian version. By the way, since then, both languages have white-listed volgota (and therefore, wikislavia). In the Dutch wikipedia, Jan van Steenbergen was one of two people asking for the whitelisting ([6]) Why would they want a link to the main volgota page, which only lists "news" articles extending to June 2006? Jan van Steenbergen is also a journalist for Ablak, a Dutch magazine treating new developments in Eastern Europe. Another one to watch out for:Siberian/North Russian language‎ I've already had to delete nonsense about the language being spoken in China, Peru, Ecuador, ... Note that it is very difficult to edit all the articles about the language (even Dutch and Belarusian), because you first have to delete all references to volgota.com, which seems to be on a universal spam list in all languages. Looted art

Do note that Ivan Khovansky redirect to Ivan Andreyevich Khovansky; I'd guess its a relative but no the same person, and Ivan Khovansky should be turned into a disambig. And as long as we are at the subject: Юрий Алексеевич Долгоруков (pl:Jurij Aleksiejewicz Dołgorukow, ru:Долгоруков, Юрий Алексеевич) - Yury Dolgorukov perhaps?, ?? Russian science fiction

Or Russian fantasy and science fiction. I would like to request this article. The exististence of this rich genre is barely mentioned in Russian literature; the world Russia is not mentioned in either Science fiction or Fantasy articles, which just show enormous gaps/biases in their coverage. Note categories: Category:Russian science fiction and Category:Soviet science fiction - they are in dire need of a parent article; Social_science_fiction#The_genre_in_the_Eastern_Bloc contains some useful material. While the nominator has since withdrawn the nomination for deletion, a number of issues have come up that requre attention. Most of it relates to the translation of the article, and there are also some potential copyvio problems. Could someone here please look into it? Is it time for "Russian Universities" project?

I noticed that Wikipedia entries on Russian universities and institutions of higher learning are in pretty dire condition. List of institutions of higher learning in Russia‎ contains something like 70% of empty links and list itself by no means complete. It is crying shame. Is it time to do something about it? Proposal for overhaul and creation of a single WP:RUSSIA project

Going thru tonnes of Russian articles, I was actually very surprised to find 3 articles that one would probably expect to be featured articles are not; those being Russia, Moscow and Russian language. I was also surprised to find that many articles I expected to exist do not; prime example being many of the Federal government ministries. Then there are other problems such as:

  • Naming conventions - very little continuity and no real guidelines for Russian names and articles in wikipedia as a whole - an example is here.
  • Categorisation - naming conventions will help somewhat - following other naming conventions will help too - an example of poor categorisation throughout Russian articles - Category:Russian_people
  • Article assessment - there are no guidelines for this, and it has resulted in some unusual results. Guidelines are needed.
  • Article review - there are no guidelines specific to Russian articles and with more than one project, other projects won't necessarily know of review requests. Additionally, because of the number of projects with very little scope in each, wider community views can be missed. For example, Russian language was a featured article until 23 August 2007. It's featured article review, unfortunately it went unannounced on all Russian projects, apart from this corner
  • Collaboration - there is none to very little collaboration on Russian content between the various projects and unfortunately article quality, and perhaps stability, will suffer for it.
  • Recruitment/outreach - As we are members of various Russian projects, we took the time to add our name to a list, because we have an interest in a certain (or all) aspect/s of Russia. New members are needed, but how will they find the projects? There needs to be co-ordination to 'recruit' new members; particularly from ru:wiki.
  • Scope - just what is the scope for the various projects? Wikipedia:WikiProject Russian federal subjects has a very narrow yet defined scope; Wikipedia:WikiProject Russian history has a hazy 'historical' scope; a question being raised here.

What I am suggesting is the following projects be merged into Wikipedia:WikiProject_Russia and for it to be co-ordinated much like any other all-encompassing project. The projects I am suggest to be merged are:

Other projects which can be used as guides on how to structure the project could be:

By merging all projects into a single project, we can then create "work groups" for specific Russian topics, such as:

  • History
  • Politics
  • Places (geography)
  • Culture (language, music, literature, film, etc)
  • Biographical
  • Society
  • Transport
  • Economy
  • etc

Perhaps others have other ideas.

Of course there needs to be concensus from all projects for a merge and structures be discussed, etc, but firstly, there needs to be discussion on the pros and cons of such an idea.
