  • To be honest this doesn't do much for me; I mean it's quite nicely done, but looking at it larger it has issues. The image quality itself isn't terrible, but it's pretty unexceptional (i.e., it's not that good). The samples illustrated are also pretty scuffed. Furthermore I don't really think the DOF really works for this image as it's been arranged - illustrating the three facets of the IC you'd really want them all in focus, not have the DOF trailing off as it does here (it would probably need a focus stack or combination of several images to do this properly); generally that's not such as issue, but just the way this has been set up I feel it's created this as an issue for itself. I also can't help feeling that after all that we're really not seeing an actual 'circuit' itself anyway. --jjron (talk) 13:47, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I personally don't think it's suitable for FP - beyond anything else, EV is pretty dubious. Perhaps if you could identify some notable alumni in the image, EV would be better. TBH, I also doubt you'll get image quality high enough. In terms of improving it further, the first step would be to remove that big dark smudge on the left-hand side; getting rid of it would require a bit of work, but would be a big positive. Additionally there's a heck of a lot of dust and scratches at fullsize that could pretty easily be removed with a bit of casual cloning and healing in Photoshop. Also strikes me as having a very minor clockwise tilt (probably only 0.1° to 0.2°) which could also be pretty easily fixed. Regards, --jjron (talk) 10:46, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree with jjron. Even if some of the people in the image are notable, the image quality isn't high enough for any of them to be identifiable. Makeemlighter (talk) 20:07, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think that the top cloud is in focus more than the rest and the ratio of how much of the picture the cloud takes up compared to how much of the rest of the picture there is leaves the balance a bit off. • I really like this one. Possible issues - a bit soft at full-res, but having said which, there's plenty of resolution to spare. The buildings in the background have a definite clockwise tilt, but it doesn't seem consistent (seems to get worse working from left to right), so it could be partly an element of lens distortion; this could be improved a bit pretty easily. An unfortunate overlap of those masty things on the top of the ship (whatever they are, I know bugger-all about ships) with relatively similar background items; nothing you can do about it, and it's not so bad when viewed full-res, but even at image-page size it's a bit off-putting. Just for the record, was the restoration strictly a dust and scratches thing? I'd say give it a try at FPC. --jjron (talk) 11:01, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, there's a few aspects I'm a bit hazy about on further thought. I'm thinking it seems to be a pincushion distortion causing that tilt on the buildings, but as I said it's quite noticeable on the right, almost non-existent on the left; I'm wondering if this image has undergone a significant crop at some point for composition reasons, taking off the left-hand side? I'm also trying to work out why that little boat furthest left is so blurry; DOF shouldn't be an issue, I guess it could be a motion blur, but it would have had to been fairly hiking along. BTW, could I suggest you give it another quick once-over for scratches. --jjron (talk) 11:14, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • How would one correct the "pincushion distortion"? The image was cropped and tilt corrected from its original TIFF. I could try and give it another look for scratches later today. Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:31, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Original file on-Wiki here.
Hmmm, that distortion is a funny one, you could try a bit more rotation, but not sure that would help overall. Other than that you could do some distortion transforming, or even try a lens correction tool in Photoshop. I'm not sure how important it is. I'd have a play with it, but unfortunately my main computer has ceased to be, and I'm restricted to pretty limited equipment atm till I get the chance to buy a new machine. Just noticed there looks to be something seriously strange going on with the water between that front and centre boat and the main ship; not sure if that was introduced with the latest edit, but I didn't notice it before. --jjron (talk) 14:34, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think you are right about that; it may have been introduced through compression or something... odd. I will have another go tomorrow; already late here. Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:17, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've uploaded two different versions over each other, here, I tried to fix the distortion, please check both of them and let me know how are they.   ■ MMXX  talk  00:58, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • The eye is partially covered with clouds, and it's slightly ellipses-ed-shaped; also, the outer band's aren't brilliant enough. if this went through FPC, I would oppose. Sorry. HurricaneFan25 15:15, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • It is a Category 4 hurricane, not a Category 5. Of course it isn't going to have a perfect structure. -- TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 20:51, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • One main concern brought up with any tropical cyclone FPC is the multitude of high-quality satellite images available. This is a very well-developed storm that was caught at its prime by MODIS, something that doesn't happen often. Structurally, there are few flaws with the storm and I have to counter the argument brought up by HFan. They eye is quite circular and mostly cloud-free at the surface. What you're seeing is the stadium effect, something often seen in powerful hurricanes where there is some cloud cover from the top of the storm over the eye. That said, it is likely that this wont pass FPC on en.wikipedia (speaking from experience here) but I would wholeheartedly support it. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 20:55, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • The levels adjustment really helped it, but there's still too much glare IMO. Much of the image is unsharp (not just the fast-moving bits), and it's tightly cropped above and below. Something about the pose of the closest soldier detracts from it too. Good caption, reasonable EV, but I think there are too many quality problems for this to do well at FPC. --Avenue (talk) 10:44, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • The lighting is good. The tilt needs fixing. Something has gone wrong with the post processing though. Note the weird purple colour of the shadow and edges of the golden parts. Has this been cut out? Or perhaps too much shadow-highlights tool? JJ Harrison (talk) 06:47, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there's a tilt - I used the grid tool to align everything. I didn't exactly cut it out - used the curves tool to white out things that were light but not quite while. Maybe I didn't do it evenly for each color, which resulted in the weird shadows. Besides that, I played with the color balance only on a global basis. I'll have to play around with it to try to fix those issues... Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:03, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I feel this pair of satellite images, when viewed in comparison, strikingly present the wide-spread effects of the 2011 Thailand floods in the area, as well as flooding in general. I'm not sure if the images should be combined, since that removes the possibility of direct comparison through tab-switching, or if the empty top-left corner should be removed. • The stitch still needs work. Quite a few of the buildings in some shots are crooked, and need vertical control points to correct that. Secondly, the exposure varies from frame to frame - this can be corrected but it is a bit time consuming. Set your camera to manual if you can in future for panoramas. This is most visible in the sky. I can't see any significant stitching errors, and the image quality is good enough given the high overall resolution in my view. JJ Harrison (talk) 08:52, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • As you suggest JPEG artifacting (rather than pixelation) is an issue, though to be fair it seems to have affected the background more than the subject (still an issue for FPC).
