I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.. How to ping

edit

I read over the ping page and am not getting it.... if I want to invite someone to a talk page, what is the exact thing I type in to ping them? is "user:xyz" enough to ping user xyz?TantraYum (talk) 01:31, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TantraYum: [[User:Example]] with the brackets will work, or you can use the template {{ReplyTo}} RudolfRed (talk) 01:47, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
user:rudolfRed thanks! TantraYum (talk) 01:52, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
User:TantraYum: More generally, your edit must have a wikilink to their user page, either written directly like you just did, or made with a template, e.g. by writing {{ping|xyz}}. The edit which adds the link must be signed. It's not enough to sign in one edit and add the link in another. There are a few other technicalities but they are rarely relevant. "the ping page" could refer to different pages so I'm not sure what you read. Please always link a page you refer to. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:57, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ref 175 is in red - a problem? Thankyou27.116.38.30 (talk) 02:15, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The day of the month for the cited document was written in the citation as "2", whereas it needed to be "02". I have corrected it. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:34, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Everyone. i am Udai Mazumdar an Indian Musician known with my artistic name also Udhai Mazumdar. someone made a wiki page on my name Udai Mazumdar and now i cant get to this person to make changes on the pages or edits. Kindly help. Thanks. Udaimazumdar — Preceding unsigned comment added by Udaimazumdar (talkcontribs) 06:06, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Udaimazumdar: I have moved the article to Udhai Mazumdar. You should make your requests for changes on its talk page Talk:Udhai Mazumdar. Maproom (talk) 06:43, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot Maproom for doing the needful. I really appreciate it. Can you also help me please to let me know how to remove the balance sign on tom of my page as it says most citations are from a close associate of the subject. Thanks for the help. Udaimazumdar — Preceding unsigned comment added by Udaimazumdar (talkcontribs) 07:03, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Udaimazumdar: Please firstly, clarify any connection to, or relationship with, the subject. You have chosen a username which indicates you have a connection. Please also read WP:COI and make any necessary declarations. Please don't refer to a page as 'my page'. It is Wikipedia's page about the subject and no one person has any claim to it. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 09:25, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In the Hugh Lupton section on this page, the file just added is too big. Please make it smaller. Thanks.175.33.22.145 (talk) 11:43, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've resized it slightly; now it's really just a matter of taste. Too many images on that page already tbh. —SerialNumber54129 paranoia /cheap sh*t room 11:54, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to find all of the drafts I've created?

edit

I've started many drafts but a lot of them are unlikely to be completed before the 6 month deadline and they're auto-deleted. Is there a way to find them all? The list of pages I've created doesn't seem to contain my draft space articles. Abyssal (talk) 12:11, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Abyssal: See here. If a draft is eligible for deletion as CSD G13 (abandoned) you 'should' be notified in one of two ways. Firstly a bot notification a few weeks beforehand and secondly a notification when it is actually proposed. If a draft is deleted via G13 it is possible to have it restored via WP:REFUND. Eagleash (talk) 12:22, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Eagleash: I've created too many drafts to fit on that list. Also, I've never received any kind of multi-week advanced notification that a draft was going to be deleted just a message immediately prior to the deletion itself. Abyssal (talk) 13:00, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Abyssal: Is this the list you wanted? --David Biddulph (talk) 13:33, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Thanks you, @David Biddulph:. Abyssal (talk) 13:42, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Protecting a page

edit

To Whom It May Concern,

I'm reaching out to see how I can protect the editing of a company page?

Thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.88.241.122 (talk) 13:12, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If a page has been subjected to persistent vandalism, the place to request protection is WP:RFPP. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:17, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, IP user. As David Biddulph says, if the article has suffered persistent vandalism (that is, editing intended to damage Wikipedia) then it may be protected. I suspect you are under the (very common) misapprehension that a Wikipedia article about your company is in any way under your control, or that you have any say at all in what should be in the article. This is not the case, and indeed, you are strongly discouraged from editing it yourself: please see WP:COI. --ColinFine (talk) 13:38, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that a file added on the Hugh Lupton section has the wrong date. I have corrected the information in the Wikipedia text. Can you please fix up the accompanying text on the commons file to match. The picture was taken circa 1924 and it is Francis Lupton who is standing in the picture, not Arthur. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 175.33.22.145 (talk) 13:31, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Delete page

edit

greetings, I just joined wikipedia and I will like to delete a page I just created and start over I can't find the help button or know if I'm a confined user please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jadesix (talkcontribs) 18:43, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jadesix: You may place the tag {{Db-self}} if on it if you are the only contributor to the page. RudolfRed (talk) 19:51, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If it's Draft:Azikel Petroleum leading modular Refinery investment in Nigeria, it has already been deleted as G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:54, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@Jadesix: Are you referring to Draft:Azikel Petroleum leading modular Refinery investment in Nigeria. If so please see your talk page (click 'talk' at the top of any page). It has already been deleted as unsuitable for Wikipedia. You have also posted at the teahouse, please don't ask similar questions in different locations. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 19:56, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What title should I give this article?

edit

I would like to write an article for an attack in China on an ARD film crew in 2013. A long description of the attack is currently hosted within the Sanhe article, the city where the attack occurred. But it seems excessive to have most of the article on a city of 500,000 dominated by this incident so I want to shift most of the content to its own article. The attack received coverage in the NYT and prompted the German government to summon an official from the Chinese embassy so no question about notability. However, there is no clear name for the attack. According to Wikipedia's convention, what should it be called?

Muzzleflash (talk) 20:32, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Frankly, Muzzleflash, I think that as per WP:EVENT the notability of this event is quite questionable, unless there is significantly more coverage than now appears in the Sanhe article. I don't see any Lasting effects, nor any in-depth coverage, nor prolonged coverage, nor after-the-fact analysis. Since there seems to be no generally accepted name for this event, something like 2013 Attack on ARD film crew in Sanhe, China might do, if an article is to be created. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 20:58, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see based on the criteria it is iffy. But based on past deletion debates I think the inclusion of the article is clear cut. Maybe the criteria should be updated to better reflect those debates. But the alternative to a dedicated article is cutting the section in Sanhe down to just one sentence to conform to some guideline on avoiding disproportionate attention to one event in a much broader article. Muzzleflash (talk) 21:10, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Muzzleflash, that is not an area of deletion I have much experience with. You are welcome to create such an article and see if anyone puts it up for deletion. Perhaps no one will, or perhaps it will be kept if someone does. I have no more voice on that than any other editor. I would hope that as an independent article it would have more sources than the current section of the Sanhe article does. Please provide translated titles for sources whose titles are not in English. If you will be using citation templates, this can be done with |trans-title=, if i recall correctly. Don't forget to provide a link to the source article, as per Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 21:54, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That incident would definitely get deleted. Wikipedia is not a newspaper and this incident had no lasting impact. Clarityfiend (talk) 00:09, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Password Reset and Login

edit

Hi. I created an account way back in 2008, apparently. Apparently I used my personal email and my professional email to create the account. But I no longer have that professional email account. Now when I ask to reset the email, it apparently goes to the professional email, not my personal email. And of course, I'm using a different computer. Is there a way I can reclaim that account or do I need to create a new account? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.124.92.254 (talk) 20:48, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, without access to the email there is literally nothing anyone can do to recover the account. You will need to start over. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:35, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You have to create a new account if you don't remember the password. Accounts and passwords never expire. The old password will still work as long as new passwords sent by email have not been used. If it was an account with special rights then a new email address can be set by system administrators in rare circumstances. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:42, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I have removed an incorrectly labelled and copyright Commons file from the page. I hope this is OK. Can you check please? The file was in the Hugh Lupton section - a photo of Joyce Lupton and her 2 sons. ThanksSrbernadette (talk) 23:51, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
