Nominating an article for deletion

edit

I am trying to nominate Richard Tylman for deletion, but the talk page is for an older nomination of this article. Could someone please help me to create a new talk page. TFD (talk) 00:28, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, try Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Richard Tylman (4th nomination), as there were already Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Richard Tylman (3rd nomination), Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Richard Tylman (2nd nomination), and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Richard Tylman, all closed with the non-result No consensus. -- Matthead  Discuß   00:38, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the template. Now please continue according to Template:AfD footer.-- Matthead  Discuß   00:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I fail to make the connection. --White Trillium (talk) 02:20, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What would it take for Wikipedia to remove permanently and entirely a page? This page was created with good intentions, but it appears that the artist is being hurt in the process. http://deletionpedia.dbatley.com/w/index.php?title=Estefan_Gargost_(deleted_16_Jun_2008_at_14:21) 98.218.233.14 (talk) 01:14, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We've already deleted that page from Wikipedia. However, another website has chosen to copy it and keep it up. Since Wikipedia content is free to reuse, this is an acceptable thing to do. To remove the page from that website, you will have to contact the owner of that website, http://deletionpedia.dbatley.com. Prodego talk 01:19, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Estefan Gargost was deleted from Wikipedia. The copy you link to is at Deletionpedia. Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia has no control over Deletionpedia. I don't know the policies of Deletionpedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:21, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What is happening when I add {{category:airports}} to a page?

edit

I just edited Saint Yan Airport and added {{category:airports}} to the bottom. I expected that when I saved the page, I would see at the bottom "categories:airports". Instead, it says:

  • The main article for this category is Airport.
  • See also: Category:Airfields
  • Categories: Aviation | Buildings and structures by type | Planned developments | Transport infrastructure
  • Wikimedia Commons has media related to: Airports

I'm very impressed, and pleased, that all this stuff happened. I'm just curious WHY it happened. Where does the code reside that dictates all the things that are supposed to happen when {{category:airports}} gets added to a page???

Thanks, 160.39.220.88 (talk) 03:30, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Someone has already fixed that. When adding categories, use brackets instead. Like this: [[Category:Airports]]. Goodvac (talk) 03:35, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The code {{category:airports}} transcludes the source code of the page category:airports but categories should not be transcluded in articles. They should be added to the article with brackets like Goodvac showed. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:34, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Ship called "The Increase"

edit

In 1628: A ship supposedly arrived from England in Boston called "The Increae". Some of my distant relatives were on that ship. Can someone tell me how to get information about that ship and possibly its passengers?

Boston wasn't settled until 1630 (as Shawmut). There was sporadic settlement in the area, but the Massachusetts Bay Colony itself was not organized until 1629. If it was 1628, they probably arrived in Plymouth Colony rather than Boston, as until the 1630's, Plymouth was the primary settlement and colony in the area. A good place to start your reasearch would be the Plymouth Colony Archive which has a wealth of information on Plymouth. In the future, the better place to ask these sorts of questions would be the Wikipedia:Reference desk, as this page is intended for help in using Wikipedia, while the Reference desk is for general knowledge questions. --Jayron32 06:08, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Another idea: John Endecott arrived in the area of Boston (Salem, Massachusetts actually) in 1628 with a ship of about 100 men. No idea what the name of his ship was, but that may give you a lead. --Jayron32 06:14, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Using an image used in French wikipedia

edit

I created Fédération Syndicale Unitaire using material from the French wikipedia. They include the union's logo: Logo fsu.PNG. It doesn't work in English wikipedia, I think because it hasn't been uploaded to Commons. How can I do that? I don't have a French wikipedia account. Itsmejudith (talk) 13:29, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You would need to download a local copy to your machine and then upload the image here. Images have never been my strong point, but I think Commons would not accept a fair-use image such as a logo. However, you can upload it here for use in the article. TNXMan 14:10, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Tnxman307 is quite correct in that Commons could not accept the image (unless the FSU have a notice saying that they are releasing the image under a compatible license, which is extremely unlikely). Wikipedia could use it under fair use provisions (Commons cannot accept fair use images), though, so this is where it would need to be uploaded. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:47, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles

edit

There seem to be a range of templates to help with the citation of specific sources, such as {{OED}}. Some of these are listed at Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles but not all (for example, the OED one is not there).

Is there any way to find all the available citation templates like this?

Also, could I add more such templates? For example, it would be useful to have ones for citing entries in the standard Latin and classical Greek lexicons.

All the best. –Syncategoremata (talk) 14:23, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The ones which have been categorised properly may be found at Category:Specific-source_templates - but not all of them are there either! If they are not in the Template messages link you provided, or at that category, it would be hard to find them! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:05, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have noticed that the wikipedia globe logo hides part of the text message on the upper left hand corner of the webpage. Is this intentional? If yes what purpose does it serve?

Hi! This is a known issue. See Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Computing/2010_April_14#Misplaced_Wikipedia_Logo for the answer. TNXMan 15:01, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reporting a user

edit

How do I go about reporting a user that I feel is letting his personal opinion of my edits get in the way of having a rational discussion about them? NathyWashington (talk) 15:28, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Use WP:ANI. Immunize (talk) 15:43, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the best avenue is either request a third opinion or follow the steps at dispute resolution. TNXMan 15:46, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So you do not feel the best way to manage a point-of view dispute is WP:ANI? Immunize (talk) 15:51, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I feel that ANI is a second-to-last resort (the last being arbitration) that should be used after all other steps have been exhausted. ANI is really only for urgent matters that have not/cannot be handled elsewhere. The case mentioned above sounds like it could be discussed at several other venues first. TNXMan 15:54, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help. I tried to enter into a discussion about the edits but he seems to have a "what I says goes" attitude and is for lack of a better word trying to bully me out of editing rather than discussing or budging when it comes to the problems he has with them. I will take a look at both options provided. Thank you. NathyWashington (talk) 16:03, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since the dispute seems to be about external links, you could also try having a discussion at Wikipedia:External links/Noticeboard. --BelovedFreak 16:18, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What is Wikipedia's policy? Every article is forbidden unless a guideline or policy allows it? Or everything is permitted unless it is forbidden in writing? Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 15:32, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if there really is a policy one way or the other. It's more of an interpretation. My take is that we should not have an article on a subject at all unless the article cites from its inception reliable sources that demonstrate significant coverage. Some people think it's OK to add unsourced stubs with the idea that other people will come along and expand them. There are probably several different views that could be argued. TNXMan 15:41, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
WP:ISNOT is also handy to reference when deciding if an article should exist. --NeilN talk to me 15:50, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
On deeper thought, it seems that everything is permitted as long as it meets a few requirements, such as a reliable reference and not really nasty towards a person (BLP), and is not child pornography. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 18:49, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See also Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, WP:NOTABLE, WP:V, and WP:RS. There is no simple formula to determine what survives on Wikipedia. Most deletions are decided by comparatively small numbers of Wikipedians, which suggests that the articles that get deleted have few users interested in fighting to keep them. You don't see too many discussions at WP:AFD where articles get deleted after, say, 500 users vote to keep them. In rare cases where large numbers of users want to edit certain types of articles that Wikipedia deletes, they go off and start their own wikis such as StrategyWiki and Wookiepedia. --Teratornis (talk) 21:39, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Content removal issues

edit

On Toyota I reverted what appeared to be an edit that removed content. However, when I checked the diff (after the revert) it looked like I removed content. Why would that occur? Immunize (talk) 15:41, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Were you looking at the diff using popups? If so, the popup may look like you removed content. However, the page history shows that you restored the page to Bdc101's version. TNXMan 15:45, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I was looking at the diff using WP:POPUPS. Immunize (talk) 15:52, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yup. Popups often display diffs in a confusing manner. The page history shows you did everything correctly though. TNXMan 15:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Would you recommend disabling popups because of this technical problem? Immunize (talk) 16:11, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's up to you. Do you find the other features of popups useful enough to outweigh the confusing diff display? I find popups useful and use them quite often. TNXMan 16:12, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Given that I am a Rollbacker, I seldom use the popup revert option, however, they significantly speed my vandalism reversion, as rather than having to go to the diff page itself, I can mouse over the diff link and get the diff in a small window. Immunize (talk) 16:22, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Louis XIV article vandalism

edit

In the section http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XIV_of_France#Personal_reign_and_reforms

there is a paragraph about Louis XIV's reform of the military, in which it is flatly declared (off topic and without citations): He was a racist.

But, when I go to edit the text to remove the offending sentence- I don't see that sentence there! This has never happened to me before - HALP.--LeValley 15:48, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

It looks like it was removed by CubeLurker. TNXMan 15:50, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Naperville, IL

edit

I have attempted to add the title of a book, including the ISBN number, a number of times under the "further reading" section of the Naperville IL page. The book is Gloamin' Bridge (A Civil War Remembrance). It is historical fiction concerning Naperville during the Civil War. It goes in okay, but when checking later it has been deleted. Why?330man (talk) 19:11, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The first time you added the book to the 'Further reading' section of the article, it was removed with the comment Fictional; stories aren't appropriate for the "Further reading" section. If the book had been a factual book, it would probably have been kept, but although it may have been researched before writing, a fiction book cannot be guaranteed to be 100% accurate (sometimes, accuracy gets in the way of the story's needs, and is changed!). -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 19:15, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There probably aren't all that many books about Naperville. Is it valid to list the book somewhere and make it clear that's it's fictionalized? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:18, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You might be surprised. They even have books on the history of the Naperville Municipal Band.[1] A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 21:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC) [reply]
It appears to be a Print on Demand title (going by the only reference at Google, at Google Books). I couldn't find any libraries which held it (looking at WorldCat) or any bookshops which have it on their catalogs (except Amazon) - and I can't find any reviews for it which show that it is accurately depicting the Naperville area (make that "I can't find any reviews for it"). There is no way of verifying that this fictionalised account has any historical or geographical accuracy. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 19:44, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see the same novel was recently added to Battle of Fort Pillow. That article has a "In popular culture" section where the book might be appropriate, and such a section might be appropriate in the Naperville, Illinois article. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:31, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A fiction book on a non-fiction topic is not appropriate for the further reading section. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 21:49, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I'm not sure that it would count as "popular culture" - Amazon appears to be one of only 3 places you can get it (the other two are pickabook · com and thebookshoponline · com, but I can't find a publication date (or publisher), it's the only book by the author which Amazon (or the other two) have. Even using the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13, the only references I can find are the Google Books result and the 3 bookseller results. I can find no evidence that this book is "popular" - no reviews anywhere, no links anywhere - apart from two 5* reviews at couol · com, but neither of those mention its coverage of the Naperville area. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 21:52, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I did some more searching, and the book does not seem to meet any notability standard. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:13, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

flag salute

edit

If you are having a conference or multi day meeting, do you salute the flag only at the opening of the first meeting, such as a breakfast meeting, (if that is the first meetiing of the day), or must you do it at the start of each segment, such as a breakfast meeting, lunch meeting, dinner meeting?

This page is for questions about using Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Miscellaneous reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps. Please let us know what flag you are saluting. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:24, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Specify the location where you hold the meeting. Flag-related customs probably vary around the world. --Teratornis (talk) 21:32, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of articles in category needing pictures

edit

Hiya... did some digging through the Help desk archives and I didn't see anything that worked, so here's a fresh request. How do I get a list of all the articles in a category that need pictures? What I'm trying to do is to figure out what entries in Category:Female pornographic film actors need pics, without having to click on each individual pictures. I've gone through the cat and tagged the talk page for all the articles that were missing pictures with the appropriate "needs-photo=yes", so there are entries present in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of people and their subcats for all the articles. Running CatScan and Linkintersection doesn't seem to come up with anything... Tabercil (talk) 22:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you can do this with AutoWikiBrowser. — jwillbur 23:05, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MIME type image upload

edit

Hi, I have an image from a digital camera I'd like to upload. For privacy reasons I've stripped the exif data. However, when I attempt to upload the Image (a jpg), wikipedia keeps saying: "File extension does not match MIME type." and appears to be refusing to accept it. I've ticked the "ignore warning" box but it's still not working. Once the exif data was stripped, I re-saved it as a new jpg file using irfanview, but it is still giving me that error and not working. Any suggestions? Thanks Moriarty (talk) 22:57, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you don’t get an answer here, you might try Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. While your question isn’t strictly a copyright question, the people watching that forum may be better able to answer your question.SPhilbrickT 14:56, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
