Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Failed log/November 2006

I think the portal should be a featured portal because it meets and betters all the criteria. The portal also is clean without any clutter. Provides enough to do for the visitor. And links with other main portals. Therefore I think it should be a featured portal. Unisouth 09:32, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • The portal's layout and content is good. I still would like to see automatic rotation at least for SA and SP. So for now I'll object, see below.
  1. Archives for the selected picture, DYK and news sections are needed.
  2. The selected picture needs an image credit of some sort.
  3. The edit link in Selected picture is linked badly.
  4. I wonder why there should be a shortcut: WP:TUBE (aka WikiProject:TUBE) for the portal, no other has such.
  5. Associated Wikimedia links go to "404 Page not found pages". feydey 10:00, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There will be archives for all those mentioned once there are enough to make one. Unisouth 06:51, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hmm, let's see:
    • The "Did you know" section needs to rotate its content somehow (and, by extension, needs an archive).
    • The news section needs an archive.
    • The Wikimedia links should be centered.
    • Get rid of the WikiProject navigation box at the bottom; it's too self-referential. Kirill Lokshin 16:51, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: The current title might confuse people from other parts of the world; consider renaming (e.g. to London Underground"). 68.111.72.167 04:20, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • The portal does not seem to meet the criteria of being both broad in topic area and of interest to users of Wikipedia.
    • It would be nice if the content was automatically rotated.
    • DYK should be rotated, if even just once a month. -Gphoto 00:38, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal seems to be of too limited a scope to be of interest to a wide variety of wikipedia users, considering the subject of the portal is only one small field (rapid transit) in only one area (London). This is in no way a criticism of the quality of the portal, which is fine, provided all existing concerns are addressed, just of it's scope. Badbilltucker 16:39, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I took over control of this portal just about a month ago. I changed basically all aspects of the page, and I have made several additions to the page, such as a new stock ticker (updated daily by me). I've checked over the portal guidelines, and this appears to be in compliance with all rules. --Nishkid64 00:07, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Lots of things that need to be fixed:
    • The introduction should actually talk about the topics, not be a list of categories.
    • Archives for the selected article, picture, economy, quote, and news sections are needed.
    • The selected picture needs an image credit of some sort, and shouldn't use thumbnail markup.
    • The topics list seems pretty rudimentary for such a broad area.
    • What do the EU and architecture portals have to do with this?
    • The ticker should be centered in its box.
    • A longer history of regular updates would be extremely helpful here. Kirill Lokshin 01:36, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Object per Kirill Lokshin's list, and note that archives are a must. I kind of doubt the stock ticker idea, as it needs daily attention, it needs probably at least 2 people updating it. Looks like the first update by the nominator was in 13 September 2006, no consistent record yet. The DYK's last update is on 11 December 2005. "Things you can do" hasn't been cleaned up. feydey 09:14, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Since I couldn't find some portal review section, I decided to try this out so I would know what to work on. Okay, I will try to fix up all that has been suggested. It's really hard for me to do the updating when I am the only one actually doing it. Also, Kirill, I don't think we should have an archive for quotes and news sections. News sections has a link to WikiNews, and I have seen that none of the other portals really have archive links for news sections. For quotes, there's really no need for an archive there. The related portals section is something I knew I had to fix up, because I didn't understand why this portal was in the related portals section for Portal:Architecture. But I think the EU portal is pretty relevant, since they do handle many of the economic issues of Europe. I just created the topics list, and that's just a prelim at the moment. I'll do the rest of the updates, and come back in a few months again for a re-evaluation. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. If anyone has more suggestions, either add them here, or message me on my talk page. --Nishkid64 15:01, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • If You only use news from Wikinews, then an archive for them isn't that important. The portal that I maintain, Portal:Literature, has archives for news and quotes. I suggest removing the EU portal link. Keep maintaining the portal for a few months (maybe someone else gets interested and helps out), do the improvements, and then come back. Best, feydey 15:34, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah, I have only been getting my news from WikiNews. I also plan on coming back ina few months and giving it another shot. --Nishkid64 19:36, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Object I really do not like the background colour, as most browsers use blue for links, maybe a colour that is more pale. I also do not like the gold bar picture, it implies that economics is somehow only concerned with wealth and it's procurement. Petty issues I know but economics and economic controls can also be used to improve society and should not be so blatently about cash. I am a new user and would be willing to help maintain this page if you wish DougBrown 17:03, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated this portal, with help from other Filipino Wikipedians. It has been updated regularly for two months running. I thought I may give featured status a shot. --Howard the Duck 09:24, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • A good start, I'd say. Here are some minor issues with the Portal.
    • Create archives of Selected Pictures.
    • Mention the period for which the article/image appeared on the portal page in the archives.
    • Use correct copyright tags for images appearing on the portal page (Manila639 1899.jpg has obsolete tag).
    • I have made few improvements to the portal. Please also review them. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 12:18, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Here are my comments:
        • Oh, yes, I forgot about that. I'll be doing that.
        • The history tab will be helpful here. Will do that. UPDATE: I created the archive already. --Howard the Duck 12:52, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • I updated the tag. I dunno if it was the correct tag, though.
        • I personally dislike bullets on the DYKs but since you added them already, I'll let them stay that way.
      • --Howard the Duck 12:27, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • AFAIK, the DYKs appearing on the Portal page need not be featured on the WP's main page. If you find a DYK good enough for the portal, which was denied a place on the WP'smain page, you can still add it. Just make sure that they are preferably from new/recently expanded articles. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 12:58, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yeah, but it would seem prettier if the DYKs mentioned are from the DYK at the Main Page, to match the selected article which is recently featured on the main page (late June). But is it really necessary that the DYKs at portals come from new or newly unstubbed articles? --Howard the Duck 13:06, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Not necessarily; while that's what most portals do, I've seen some cases where the DYK content is queued up in advance like the other selected content is. Kirill Lokshin 13:15, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • I agree with Kirill. It is usual for portals to feature only recently created/expanded content, though this is not a compulsion. As I said above, if possible, preferably stick to this method. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:58, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
          • Anyway, the DYKs are relatively new (since they were featured as DYKs at the Main Page), and several new Philippines-related articles are either spam or are very bad. I'll change the note at the above, though. --Howard the Duck 16:04, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some further comments:

  • The news section also needs an archive.
  • The layout of the selected picture is somewhat unusual; I would suggest centering the image to avoid the large chunk of whitespace next to it.
  • There's no list of major topics.

Other than that, this looks pretty good. Kirill Lokshin 13:15, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Replies:
    • I've created the archive.
    • I changed the layout at the selected picture.
    • This will take a bit longer. Perhaps tomorrow this will be finished.
      • How about changing the categories section into a topics section? --Howard the Duck 14:57, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • You could combine the two, but it's generally a good idea to list both major topic articles and the main categories for the area. Kirill Lokshin 15:12, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • --Howard the Duck
  • Comments The news section seems extrodinarilly long and the wikiprojects sectoin shouldn't need an explanation. The selected articles and pics, I'm concerned about the rotation and updating of these. And another "selected" section would help to display more content. Joe I 01:24, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm working on a "Selected biography" if that'll help. Also, I'll be cutting down on the news section. I can understand about the rotation of the content, though; several of them stayed there for over a year. I'll be rotating them monthly. This shouldn't be a big issue, really, as some new portals got featured even though they were newly created. Also, I think the explanations at the WikiProjects are nice; not everybody knows what "Encantadia" is. --Howard the Duck 02:54, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Provisional support Rotate the content, (Portal:Scouting does it monthly too), count this as support. Rlevse 11:34, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
