The Real Life of Sebastian Knight

Thanks for your polite and appropriate note, Yossarian. On reflection, it actually looks to me like I slightly botched the revert a bit, and got a version that used "shortish", which I agree is a bizarre formulation. In fact, I don't really agree that RLSK is a short novel at all--not sure where this came from. I do think it's appropriate to spell out Nabokov's name in Cyrillic in the article--after all, the man wrote nine novels in Russian before starting to write in English, and he's regarded, just for his Russian output, as one of the preeminent Russian authors of the 20th century. As for novellas, he wrote only one or two works that could be really considered as such: The Eye, and The Enchanter.

The bit about the bidet is also something I didn't insert originally; if you go back through the edit history, you'll see that there was one VERY unencyclopaedic entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Real_Life_of_Sebastian_Knight&oldid=45129980), about which the edit note proudly stated, "it is not very "encyclopediac" but its incoherence is meant to ape that of a Nabokovian narrator." As I edited this away, I tried to exercise good faith and incorporate some of the pieces of it; hence the bidet remained. The true story behind RSLK (documented in the recent excellent biography by Brian Boyd) is that Nabokov wrote it in his small quarters in Paris, where the only way he could avoid disturbing his wife and their newborn child was to escape into the bathroom, where he stretched his valise across the bidet to use as a writing desk. Amusing, and, if properly incorporated into the article, a valid part of the story behind the composition of the novel.

Besides the Cyrillic, your edit had also removed the link to Zembla, a link that I regard as more important than the dubious "Nabokov Library", which I fear could someday disappear anyway due to copyright issues.

Lastly, I concur about the importance of proper italicizing/bolding of novels! Great to see someone else who places importance on such things--I too have threatened violence on people who underline.

You really ought to actually read RLSK, by the way. It's my very favorite of all of Nabokov's works. -- PKtm 15:31, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: Beckett, Three Novels, etc.

Hey. Thanks for writing.

I had the same qualms when I first suggested the merge: Beckett was indeed opposed to the idea of the books ever being called a "trilogy" (though he did, of course, relent on the matter of publishing them together, and the word "trinity" was even tossed around a while before being—thankfully—dropped), and as you point out, they are certainly stand-alone works (in the sense that reading Malone Dies without having first read Molloy—which I assume you were referring to when you mentioned Murphy—is hardly going to leave one confused about where the second book is coming from).

On the other hand, I think that reading the three books as a series casts a whole hell of a lot of light on each of the novels individually, and the same can be said for another non-trilogy, the three somewhat earlier stories "The Expelled", "The Calmative", and "The End". Each series is something like: birth—death—limbo (or some other pat assertion).

However, in the final analysis, I think choosing to group the novels together is a critical choice that can easily and sensibly be challenged—and thus, you're probably right that it's best to not put them all in one article. But, once the articles for the individual novels have been expanded upon (I myself might get around to it some day), there should most definitely be a section or a note or some such thing as per the three books' potential to be grouped together and seen as something of a continuity.

Re: More Beckett stuff ...

I had a look at Endgame, Krapp's Last Tape, and Happy Days, and they are indeed disgraceful. Your pages on Godot's characters are—judging from the quick glance I had—pretty solid, though maybe some tweaking could be done (tweaking work never ends, after all).

I may well work on the abovementioned stuff, though I'd have to bone up on them a bit before tackling them. The novels, too—as you pointed out—are absolutely shoddy pages (not much of a surprise, I suppose: fewer people tackle the novels because they're tough going, so it's not as widely known that Beckett's one of the 20th century's most important and revolutionary novelists), and I'll definitely be working on those at some point.

As for a Beckett project, that might be a possibility, though I don't know how much interest we could drum up. It seems like it might be pretty slim pickings, since—for example—just before the centenary I sort of pleaded, "Please help me write a Works section!", on Beckett's talk page, and got pretty much no response (leading to me fortifying myself with Jameson's whiskey and making the section up meself). Anyhow, we'll see what happens.

I'm just butting in here (Greetings Yossarian, I hope all is well with you!)...I hear the words "project" and something related to theatre and my ears perk up. I've been doing some work to create some small wikiprojects to help take care of small chunks of theatre. We now have one for Elizabethan theatre and one for Ancient Greek theatre is in the works. Perhaps a wikiproject to cover Theatre of the Absurd? It would cover just those playwrights connected with the movement, their works, general terms and for fun we could throw in Beckett's novels. I would be willing to help in creating the project page (I think the Elizabethan theatre page is quite snazzy) though I must admit that my knowledge of Absurdism is limited. Certainly it could be a fun challenge. If not, I would certainly be more than willing to lend a hand in working on some of the Beckett pages, at least once David Garrick is done (what a leap from Garrick to Absurdism!). Just a note about the Dramatic Works template (good work on the templates by the way: nicely done, clean, simple, unobtrusive): we might want (at some point in the future) want to split it off into Stage, Radio, TV, and Film (a lonely subcategory, that last one), but only once the articles have been created for the non-stage works, of course. —Saposcat 09:08, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I think your idea (viz Dramatic Works template = stage plays; the yet-to-be-done template = radio, TV, film) is a good one. As for a name for the potential new template, I'm stumped a bit on that, too: perhaps something using the word "media", because although the stage is of course a medium (our mouth is a medium, too, but we hardly go around saying, "Look at this medium!", do we?), when we use the word "media" in English it tends to imply radio, TV, and film (it usually does for me, anyway).

Anyhow, there's still plenty of time to come up with a name, I think, as it should be a while before there are decent pages for Beckett's radio/TV/film works.

I know how exasperating it can be. I have a history of edit warring with Alienus, and Alienus seems to have a history of edit warring with EVERYONE, accusing others of bad faith, and making personal attacks. He deletes the talk on his user page alot, but if you look in the history, you'll see what I'm talking about. If Alienus continues to write others off, then I don't see the point of discussing it with him. Just revert his changes until he agrees to talk, and (if need be) get an admin involved. Then maybe you should alert the guy who voted Oppose and stated 'There aren't any articles so there aren't any reasons', shouldn't you? Because there were two articles in there before you removed them, and the guy was led to opposing because the category was blank. That's stuff for you to "chew on". Ocular prosthetic

Hey, fellow cyclops! I have 8 or 9 - I lost my eye as a baby so had to get new ones periodically as I grew. The teensy ones are the most fun for tricks and games - hiding them (uh, clean) in people's drinks or in their salad is always a fun party trick :) It must be strange having to go through it as an adult, though - have you only recently lost your sight? I had a retinoblastoma, my right eye was removed when I was 18 months old. Occasionally I walk into door frames and I get pretty clumsy when I'm drunk, but it hasn't really stopped me doing anything - do you drive? I was 25 before I got my license, purely due to my own fear of being in charge of a large steel deathtrap with a restricted field of vision. Now I'm used to it driving's fine.

My eye moves enough, it looks a little lazy at times - it's usually the pupil that people notice though (it does look a bit weird in the dark - one large pupil and one normal). Do you wear specs? I find that wearing specs minimises any adverse visual impact the eye has (but I'm also shortsighteed so I need them). I love the idea of costume eyes - I've always wanted one with a laser pupil for playing cyborg, or a holographic iris. A cat's eye would also be very, very cool. I've worn fun contacts before - I can only wear them on my good eye, so I've had one black, and one cat's eye. Contacts are also cheaper, as you only have to buy one!

Oh yes! Fun with optometry students - I always test to see if they've read my chart by not telling them about my right eye then watching the reaction when they try to test it. I've had several run out to get a more senior doctor, leaving me chuckling away in the chair.

Be careful when you do get your license! I'm not sure of the situation in Canada, but I was turned away from one test (in Australia) because I got a stickler for policy, and the policy stated that everyone who couldn't pass the eye test had to have an optometrist's report. This was after I'd got my l's once, renewed it, AND failed one driving test without any such report, and in the end all they wanted was a statement of my prescription. Grrrr.

The pic in the ocular prosthetic article is my current eye - I've had this one for 15 years now, so it's definitely time for a new one. I haven't had a new one for so long because they were free (government-subsidised) where I grew up, then we moved to another state where they cost (around AU$600) and I was a poor student, blah blah, and then it wasn't urgent so I basically totally forgot about it! My eyelid now gets very droopy when I'm tired - I'm sure my face has changed quite substantially in 15 years :)

I have a full implant - has your implant fully healed? Does it give you any trouble? One thing to look out for, and this has happened several times over the years, is bleeding. If you ever get hit in the eye the hard prosthetic pushes back on those lovely rich blood vessels in the implant, and you bleed from your eye, which is as fun as it sounds (although it's not really painful, and it is very effective for zombie parties). I've also had to get a chip ground out of mine (which was causing great irritation) after I dropped it on the bathroom floor while cleaning it.

Are you fully comfortable with taking it out? That would be one area where I think getting the prosthetic as an adult would have been far better - I couldn't take my eye out until I was 8 years old, and it would get very festy and goopy (brain snot, as my sister so fondly refers to it!) as I couldn't clean it properly myself. I had a substitute teacher for a few months in grade four who had one, and he finally taught me how to take it out and clean it well. You might not have the same brain-snot issue with a smaller eye? I believe mine is due to the fact they took part of the tear ducts when they removed the eye, so there isn't enough lubrication when I blink, and the friction causes a build-up of gunk (um, sorry if that's TMI).

I think the first time it really hit me that I was 'different' was when a favourite magazine ran a competition where you had to find the image in one of theose 3D 'magic-eye' pictures. I wrote to the magazine saying they were discriminating against the partially-sighted (I was 7/8 years old)! Then I realised that, hey, this sort of thing is going to happen occasionally. My partner tried to convince me to register as partially-sighted when we moved to the UK (at the time it would have made me eligible for some tax discounts, no longer applicable as you have to make modifications to your home to cope) but I just couldn't - while I was well within the criteria my blindness has never been any sort of real disability. No, no pink dot. It's a bad angle - the eye is actually triangular, with the point at the top. If I put it in the wrong way it's really uncomfortable, it can only really go one way. I think it doesn't take too long for your body to get used to eyes - I can't really remember it's been so long! I may be able to tell you shortly - my boyfriend wants me to try one of these (but I think he also wants a trip to Switzerland - I'll find out how much they are here in the UK first).

They cost a lot in Canada! I think they were only part-subsidised in Queensland (different states have different health authorities), hence the $600. Any medical specialisation is lucrative in Australia. It's great you were able to get yours for free :)

I slept with my eye out the other night, to test if brain snot does have anything to do with the tear ducts - and the answer is a resounding no. I think the snot was worse without the eye - I've tried a few things, such as rubbing the eye with a thin coating of paraffin before inserting, but nothing works. The best thing I've found is to make a warm shower the first thing you do every morning, and put your face directly in the shower spray and wash it right out. You may need to scrape the stubborn bits out with your fingernails.

What other eye issues do your family have? My entire family is shortsighted (or was until dad got Lasik - betrayal!) but my boyfriend has the doozey story. He had a freckle/weird pigmentation on the white of his eye, and had to have surgery with only a local anaesthetic. Very Un chien andalou - watching someone cut into your eye. Blegh. The Singing Detective

Hi Yossarian — thanks for your message. Oddly, The Singing Detective is a page I've meant to have a proper go at for a while, as it's one of my all-time favourite television productions, I absolutely love it. It's already looking much better than it did a few months ago — just a plot summary as I recall. I think the production details could be expanded — I taped a documentary in BBC One's Drama Connections series about the show a few months back and keep meaning to re-watch that and add details from there, t'was a good documentary. It could also do with a critical responses section, similar to the one in a page I mostly wrote, Our Friends in the North. I think if we put in an effort we could make The Singing Detective a featured article, as Our Friends... is — it certainly deserves it! I'll try and look some books on Potter out of the library this weekend, I seem to remember them having a couple of critical studies.

Oh, and you're far too kind to describe my interest in British television as an "expertise". It's more of an enthusiasm, and I certainly wouldn't consider myself any more knowledgable than many other Wikipedia editors.Angmering 18:00, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Romanization of Russian

Hi Yossarian

It makes a change to deal with someone who isn't absolutely convinced that they're right on the issue they're commenting to me on. Thanks for your politeness!

The system I've been using is the UN system, but, with modern letters, that only differs from the scholarly system with the letter Ж. To be honest, I don't know much about the whole thing, and just picked the UN system.

My reasoning is that the article title should have a common romanization, which is usually easily pronounceable, such as "Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin". Then it doesn't matter if the romanization that appears after the Cyrillic is a bit hard to read (e.g. "Boris Nikolaevič El'cin"), because they already have a guide. Also, I'd see the purpose of the first romanization as being to render the name in a normal English fashion, and the purpose of the second to provide a more accurate key to the Cyrillic.

Template:Socialism sidebar

Howdy. I've noticed that you've been involved in discussions about the socialism template. So I thought I'd tell you that User:Spylab is persistently adding some links and removing others. For instance, he insists on removing the Politics portal link at the bottom, as well as the little links that allow you to view, discuss, and edit the template instantly. Why? Because they're not "directly" related to socialism, he says. But that doesn't explain why he is so adamant in deleting those useful links (he is also on a campaign to delete "redundant" navigational links in other socialism-related articles, with the same vigour, and in spite of my objections). I'm well, I recently went on a cruise on the Red Sea, to Egypt and Jordan, so am tanned and relaxed and life is good. I've been working way too hard this year, so it was good to get away for a couple of weeks and have the most pressing issues of the day being what to eat, which sundeck to lie on or which ancient monument to visit! But now I'm back in dark rainy London and back hard at work. I'm doing an MBA as well so time is pretty limited atm :( And I turned 30 on Thursday! Natgoo 10:55, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I've just gone over your edits to my article on Not I and am pleased to see I have my soul intact. I'm also pleased to see you saw fit to change very little. So, for the record, I'm quite pleased with myself. I have to say I do think the paragraph explaining why I chose to use the date I did for the world premiere is necessary because I can just see someone coming along and overwriting it with September 1972 because that's what the introduction to the play says but then as far as I'm aware there's still a typo in the text too. We'll see. If need be we can add it in as a footnote later.

I'm going to take a crack at That Time now.

Thanks Again

Just to let you know I appreciate the barnstar, Yossarian. I'm trying to cram the best bits from all the textbooks I own into articles around the 2500 - 3000 word mark and it's my goal to update all the shorter plays. I've not even looked at the major plays yet but I expect all I'll add to them are references unless I pick up any glaring mistakes (e.g. Godot really is God). After that we'll have a crack at the radio plays (my wife got me CDs of the original radio recordings for Xmas) and then we'll see about the TV work though it has been years since I last saw any of it.

That should keep me out of trouble for a few weeks.

LaRouche & Newton

LaRouche takes a dislike to Newton because he was an alchemist, who, according to LaRouche, was merely put forward by a group of people surrounding one Paulo (or Paolo) Sarpi (forgot the spelling) as a figurehead for the discovery of gravity and write certain laws. LaRouche also mentions a famous historical incident, for which one might say that Keynes did something useful in the 1930's. John Maynard Keynes bought a chest belonging to Newton, only to discover it was full of stuff on black magic, so the story goes, and shut it again upon discovery of the contents, vowing never to let it see the light of day again. Now, while I have read this from LaRouche, I have read this from other sources too, but having only read about it in reports on reports, so to speak, I cannot substantiate it. Have a look around. So, Godot and I finally come face to face

Godot? God! I'm a little worried that I could cover the material in the space given but, since you asked nicely, I'll save it for a break in the TV plays which I'm just about to start.

I don't know if you've noticed but my articles are getting longer and longer. There was just so much information on the radio plays especially All That Fall which is where you could help me.

Someone's stuck a cleanup box in the Interpretation section of the play and I'm at a loss where to start on it. I don't mind doing the work myself but this mushroomed to a 9000+ word article before I started some serious trimming and my way of dealing with this mountain of data was to reduce this section to grouped lists. I personally think it works; it's clean.

Could you have a wee look?

It may just be the opening paragraph that is, now I have a good look at it, a little casual BUT the opening joke is so important - it is, for me, the core of the play. All That Fall is a play of two-halves, what happens in the first half is mirrored by what happens in the second. As the child is dying under the train so is the chicken under the car wheels; it is the other bit of the puzzle and parallels Maddy's pun which is so often quoted and so rarely commented on.

Love the Magritte BTW - always a favourite. My dad had a set of precision scales in his office.

FYI - 5 years ago, I sat down and wrote a sequel to Waiting for Godot, Vladimir and Estragon are Dead. It was unthinkable to have Godot arrive but the idea of the two of them in limbo waiting on God appealed. Just one act: no tree, no rocks, no sun and no distractions. It was a bit of fun after a heavy novel but I've never done anything with it.

Thanks for getting back. Yes, I see. I've experimented with larger text on this working version, in which I've also replaced the | with • , which I think is easier on the eye. What do you think of that text size? I'm not really familiar enough with enough of these plays to feel confident about grouping them into categories; I assume that the generic categories listed on this page are those that Shaw gave them, but there are just so many different ones. If you have the time, might you have a go at breaking them up? Edit the working version by adding a < p > (without the spaces... I don't know how to type it without it functioning) wherever you think a break should occur.

Orthographic variants of Hebrew letters

I think what you're calling "standard" might be more accurately denoted "serif" or "traditional serif", whereas what you're calling "serif" is in fact a typewriter "monospaced font". Dan Pelleg (talk) 23:31, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

The WikiProject Theatre Newsletter! Issue 1 - March, 2008 Hello and welcome to this, the first ever edition of the WikiProject Theatre Newsletter! If you haven't been over to the WikiProject page lately then you're missing out - the whole thing has undergone a complete makeover - see below for more info! On top of this, we have brand spanking new templates (such as this one) and a completely revamped Collaboration of the Month - again, see below for more info on all of this. Finally, a warning - the new-look WikiProject is still having the finishing touches put on it. If you find something that doesn't work, you don't agree with or is just plain missing, please don't hesitate to let us know on the WikiProject's talk page. We'll try our very best to fix ASAP! New Look As mentioned above, the WikiProject has recently undergone a spring-clean and we're dead excited about it! If you don't mind - we'd like to take this opportunity to explain some of the features and generally show off about it a little. Colour scheme Those clashing colours have gone! All pages on the WikiProject now use two consistent shades of blue as part of the new streamlined interface (Those techies amongst us may wish to know that the precise names of the colours we use are: "lightsteelblue" for headings and "#c0e0e0" for backgrounds). Navigation Menu Every page on the WikiProject now has the official WikiProject navigation menu so you can easily flick between pages and get back to the main project page. Say goodbye to clicking the back button several times! To Do list/Open Tasks If you're stuck on what to do to help us then a list of the most important tasks is now available on the main page - no more excuses! At the moment, the list is looking a little short so if you have found something that you think ought to be added, then feel free to edit the list and let us know. Please refrain from linking to a specific article that generally needs an overall update. Single articles like this should be nominated for a future Collaboration of The Month - see below. Article Structure This is a first for the WikiProject and is still under construction. What is the Article Structure page? Well, it's basically a rough guideline of sections to include when creating theatre-related articles - in particular, plays. As the scope of this WikiProject is so large, some sections of the Article Structure won't apply to all articles and other sections which will apply to a small cross-section of our article base have not been included in this Article Structure page. If you feel we have missed out something crucial which needs adding to most or all theatre-related articles then feel free to discuss it on either the Article Structure talk page or the main WikiProject talk page Templates All of the project's templates are now arranged in one handy page. Whilst we were going through we also noticed some that were missing. We have now added new templates in the form of: {{WPTWelcome}} - a welcome tag to be placed on the talk page of a new user. {{User WPTheatre}} - a userbox for members of the project. {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Theatre/Sidebar}} - this template should be added to the side of any/all pages within the project to help navigate between project pages. {{WPTheatre User}} - the template containing the latest edition of the WikiProject Newsletter (you're looking at it now!) Collaboration of the Month Ok, so this isn't exactly a new feature. It's always been there but has never really been updated on a, ahem, monthly basis (the clue is in the title!). The Collaboration of the Month (COTM) is now in template form to enable it to be streamlined across the Project, without having to be manually updated on each page. Don't worry if we've lost you at this point - the point is, it works! You can now nominate an article for COTM on the COTM page and we promise to adhere to it this time! It will be updated monthly! The more sharp-eyed amongst you may well have noticed that the COTM at the moment is still that old fella, August Strindberg. That's because no-one has nominated a COTM for this month (being a new feature an' all...) so we've decided to leave it as it is for this month until a new one has been democratically voted for. We hope eventually to be able to use this newsletter to show off about the vast numbers of new members we have joining us each month, rather in the way that the newsletters of other WikiProjects do. The Big Debate - Character Lists in Play Articles For those of you who haven't headed over to our talk page recently - you've been missing out! Throughout the past month there's been great discussion about the issue of character lists in play articles. The aim is to form a standard presentation of character lists to be used on all play articles so if you'd like to make your voice heard on the issue then check out the talk page now. Collaboration of The Month Yet again this month's COTM has remained unchanged as no-one has nominated any articles to become the new incumbent. Quick - get yourself down to the COTM page and nominate an article for next month! Assessment The number of articles at the Assessment page are growing - if you're feeling a little lost and don't know where to begin to help us out, head on down to the Assessment page and give us a hand. New members The past month has seen Dereksmootz, Duckie for broadway, Dozenthey, Fewster, Nrswanson, Kleinzach and Broadweighbabe join us - welcome to you all! It's wonderful to see such a large influx of new members. If you've been editing a theatre-related article recently and noticed another user helping you who also appears to have an interest for the subject of theatre, why not drop them a line and invite them over to the project? HELP! We're crying out for people to help us out wherever possible. We are currently looking for members to volunteer to give us a hand in several areas. If you can do any of the following, please drop us a line at the talk page: Newsletter Editor(s) - Always fancied yourself as a bit of a journalist? Perhaps you could help us write this newsletter - it doesn't take long to compile. Maybe you'd like to help but can't commit on a regular basis?
