Introduction to contentious topics edit

You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Emptying out categories edit

Hello, Yorkporter,

Please do not remove all of the contents from a category so that it gets tagged for CFD C1 speedy deletion as an empty category. This is called "emptying categories out of process" and is greatly discouraged. If you believe a category should be deleted, merged or renamed, please make a proposal at Categories for Discussion so other editors can examine your nomination and see if it fits in with our current category hierarchy. There are instructions on the main CFD page or, if you use Twinkle, you can make a nomination easily with Twinkle. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:55, 3 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Yorkporter,
You are still emptying out categories and creating new but similar categories. Please consider going to WP:CFD and asking for a speedy rename rather than editng as you are doing. It is worth keeping older categories around along with their page history rather than having them be deleted. But definitely do not empty categories out of process.
If you have questions about categories, please bring them to the Teahouse. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:25, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looking at your Contributions, I see you are using Speedy renames for categories so I stand corrected. I was mainly looking at Category:Palestinian centenarians. Thank you for working in the system that is established. Liz Read! Talk! 22:27, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Special:WantedTemplates edit

Hi, I have been cleaning up Special:WantedTemplates and noticed that your javascript page is showing up in Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Check categories. This is because the backend software is parsing the curly braces as templates. An easy way to fix this is to put

// <nowiki>

just before line 8 your script, and

// </nowiki>

around line 56, to get the "Check categories" inside of the nowiki tags. This won't impact the functionality, since they are in javascript comments, but will remove the pages from Special:WantedTemplates. Thanks in advance for your help! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:56, 10 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
