Battle of Greece

This page is such an undertaking! Wow! I haven't tried anything so big yet. Nice job. Here is my peer review. You can move it wherever you feel is most appropriate. I did quite a bit of copyediting as I was reading; revert as you see fit.

• This is a long and detailed page. I would consider deleting some of the details and summarizing some sections so that readers make it all the way to the end of the page. Sections to consider condensing:

• Condense "Prelude"
• Integrate "Hitler's decision to invade" and "British aid" into a reduced "Prelude"
• second paragraph of "British aid" - it didn't happen, so it seems less necessary - you might cut this entirely
• Topography material - cut drastically
• Condense "Evacuation"

• I realize that this is a very touchy subject with these articles, but the page did seem slightly POV to me. For example, the Axis powers rarely receive the same amount of detailed attention in terms of names of commanders, etc. as the Allied powers. Also, when I came to the statement The Greek campaign, ended in a complete German victory won in record time at the end of the article, I was stunned. This is not the impression that the article gives at all. While it may be true that the Greeks faught valiantly, this fact is emphasized repeatedly throughout the article to the point that I thought the Germans barely won (which is, apparently, not true - they easily won). Also, do we not have to consider the idea that the Germans fought valiantly as well? There are very few comments regarding their heroism here. I understand how difficult it must be to write a page about the Nazis, but I just want to point out that while reading this page, I noticed a bias towards valorizing the Greeks. In some cases such language is appropriate and some cases not; we must try and figure out where it is appropriate in this article.
• Have historians speculated on why the Germans praised Greek resistance? Goebbels was a master rhetorician; I doubt that he was actually praising Greek resistance. Could he have been suggesting by implication, for example, that the French, British or Russians were weak? Statements in wartime are rarely transparent and I have a feeling that some historian has analyzed these. The same is true of the Allied statements valorizing the Greeks.
• After reading the article, I do not feel that the lead adequately summarized the article; I was left with the feeling in the lead that the battle was almost a draw and the Germans were dragged into it but the article actually suggests that the Germans won handily (in the "Aftermath" section) and took advantage of this opportunity to expand their influence.
• "Prelude": Why did the Italians do so poorly early on, even though they had more men and more ammunition? This is not really explained.
• The first quote box and Hitler's "joke" quote has no box and no space around it; its text overlaps with the article's text. Awadewit 03:22, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Western painting

Sorry to bother you, I'm puzzled and I am hoping that you can help. I've been editing on Western painting and history of painting for quite some time now and - User:Minderbinder reverts the images seemingly at his whim, 5 or 6 times already. I've had considerable help from several editors in finding and using images with proper fair-use tags. It feels as though this editor is harassing these articles. If you might look at this situation I'd be appreciative. There is a long discussion on this here: talk:Western painting the articles talk page. I'm Sorry to trouble you, I noticed today that User:Minderbinder reported Western painting and History painting here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Cyde/Cleaned_up_lists I'm not familiar with all this, I'm not sure what will happen, do you know this process? Hey Yannis! I've been really busy lately, so I haven't been around much, but I happened to see this on my watchlist tonight. Anyway, I saw in the article you wrote (which looks largely great) that you seem to be implying that the older Parthenon was constructed on the site that was later occupied by the Parthenon, while, to my understanding, there's a great degree of scholarly dispute over whether the Parthenon site was originally occupied by the older Parthenon or by the so-called "Bluebeard temple" (the other building, in either case, would have been on the site that later housed the Erechtheum). I'm not sure how recent my information on this is, though. Are you working from recent archaeological data that's definitively determined this, but I thought I'd offer it for consideration. Actually, since you weren't any more read up on the subject than I, I looked into it this morning and it appears that the article is correct; I've got a survey text published in 2002 with me that treats the issue of building locations on the Acropolis as settled. BC/BCE

Well, first, when I came across the article is used both "BC" and "CE"; it needed to be made consistent, so I brought it into line with normal practice in academic and semi-cademic works. I've been trying for months to get some help with that. I'll look through all the items you mentioned. Two quick notes:

• (1) "made his the first department store" - This isn't an error, though I can see why it looks like one. It's a way to say "made his store the first department store ..." to do a certain thing. If I remove either "his" or "the" it changes the meaning, and I don't want the redundancy of "store ... store." Ideas?
• (2) I've tried all the ways I know to find a non-copyrighted picture, including looking through U.S. government-agency sites (he was connected to Kennedy and Johnson and served in different government-related projects). Suggestions where else to look, or an article on where else to look?

Gorgon and Perseus

Hi Yannis. In the above two articles I would like to ask your help evaluating the image of the Gorgon because user DreamGuy thinks it is such a bad picture it does not deserve to be in the Perseus and Gorgon articles. He is currently edit warring with me and despite another user (Wetman) supporting the picture and the picture being used in three other Wikipedias (France, Italy, Israel) he keeps deleting it from the two articles. The image is : Image:The_Gorgon_at_Corfu_Museum.jpg. You could comment on its quality and relevance to the articles on the talk pages of the article as shown below so that we can show DreamGuy that not all people share his opinion. We can also post this on the Greece project talk page for more comments. Please refer to Talk:Gorgon#Gorgon.27s_picture and Talk:Perseus#Gorgon.27s_picture for background info. I also informed user Iamunknown and asked for his comments. Byzantine Empire

I don't want this to sound like false humility but your are a more experienced editor, I understand this much. But are you sure that we don't need a little section about why the Empire fell? Its all over the article true and the section I added needs a little more citation but that section isn't very long and its got three already. Besides, its common knowledge amongst academics that Byzantium was a defensive state compared to Rome which aimed to spread their civilisation to "barbarians". My opinion is that we need to wrap it up, which this article doesn't do. Its not a chronological list of events, its an article so it should naturally contain a conclusion section of some sort.

As for adding more stuff to the article, well its a 1000 years of history. Some sections such as under the Isaurian are not emphasized enough. I hope you will agree that some where in the future, we can expand this but with citations and all. Tourskin 02:17, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Contribution

Hello. I am currently trying to contribute to a battle in respect to giving a reason why a Viking force had to withdraw from a native attack, which I think was instrumental to the article itself and since the person in question received her place in history for that act. Its my understanding that Wikipedia is meant for contributions, but the people at that region see fit to leave the situation vague. They have told me that I cannot simply copy and past from references and, in short order, I re-wrote the small addition in my own words. I don't see what the problem here is, however, they simply revert my edits and give me vague conclusion to why they have done so. The site is intended to be used for non-commercial reproduction so we have no problems in copyright infringement. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. InternetHero 22:58, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Hydra?

Hi, Yannis. I was doing some research to expand Ion Luca Caragiale (in my sandbox), and I bumped into a problem that I'm not sure I solved. The man indicated several times that his ancestors (whom most believe were Greek, and whom he himself indicated were Greek) were born on one of the Ionian Islands. When doing this, he did not actually say what the name of the island was, but used the adjective "Idriot[e]" for it. I could not find an accurate confirmation of what the name stood for, but various reasonable guesses led me to believe that the island's name should be "Hydra". The only Hydra with an article is the one way to the south of Greece, and it is certain that he was not talking about that one. Also, to the problem of transliterating from Greek using various systems is added the Romanian way of transliterating - in Romanian, the subtracting the suffix from the adjective would usually give "Idria", as in Idrija, which has led at least one journalist to absurdly assume that he was talking about the latter.
