Greek election results

Hi Yannismarou,

Like me, you have an interest in Greek election results. Up to now, most election results have been entered on to templates (e.g. Template:Greek legislative election, 1920) which are then embedded into the articles on the results themselves. This does not involve any extra work. You simply create the template like an article - the best way to do this is open an existing template, change the year of the election, and begin the new article. Once you've done this, you can included it using these kind of brackets {{}}.

In addition, try not to put names of people in bold. This is not Wikipedia policy. Always use wikilinks.

Thank you for the piece of advice. I'm obsessed with greek politics and the greek history, in general, including the elections. Nevertheless, I face two major problems: a) lack of time, b) limited knowledge of the english language (my native language is greek).

No problem. My Greek is not very good, although I live in Athens, so I'll always need help with translating the names of parties and that. Let me know if you need anything checked for English. I'll keep an eye on your contributions and can make any improvements.

Like you, I think it is important to get the election results up and to write up something on all the parties that held seats. With all the different names and then the variety of ways they have been translated into English (i.e. Popular Party - People's Party - Liakon Komma, etc), there needs to be standards set.

Conseil d'État

Thanks for your reaction. Using a French name for a Greek institution in an English Wikipedia is not according to WIkipedia Naming conventions. That micht be more often a problem, since the legal system of most countries differ. My country (I am a Jurist too), it is named Raad van State, which means in English Council of State. Greek and Cypriot media coverage

Hello Yannismarou,

I am writing a thesis on Croatia's candidacy to join the EU as seen by the various European media. As I see that you are a native Greek speaker interested in Greek politics I was wondering if you would consider helping me. Needless to say, I don't speak Greek. However, I think it would be a shame if my thesis were to reflect only the views and topics covered in the countries such as Austria, Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands etc (in short, the countries whose languages I understand). Therefore, I would like to include a section on Greek and Cypriot media in my thesis. I am not only interested in Croatia's candidacy, but also in the wider subjects people associate with the EU. I left a more detailed list on my discussion page.

I will be more than grateful if you could leave me just a link to a Greek or Cypriot newspaper article that deals with any of the above subjects with a short summary such as for example: "XY is opposed to Turkey's membership because of the unresolved Cyprus issue" or "the membership of Croatia is bad because the constitutional treaty has been rejected in France and the Netherlands" or "party X is critical to Greece's membership in the eurozone because of..." Also any other information is appreciated.

I will be sending this message to several other native Greek speakers. Also if you know a Wikipedian who could help me, please let me know. I have just finished the introduction to the Greece section of the thesis and was about to start writing the main portion of the section. Thanks to invaluable help from Donnerstag and Nikos I have already had plenty of high-quality references in English. You provided me with highly interesting links to comments and reactions in Greek as well. All I can say is that I am so glad that I can include all those views in my thesis instead of just concentrating on media in Germany, Austria, Britain, France etc. Thanks once again. Pericles

While I agree that Pericles was a great politician and the Acropolis a marvelous monument, the fact is that this is my Point of View. While the things stated on the article are true, it's still POV. I tried to reduce the POV as well as slightly help with the language, but frankly, I'm not sure it's there yet. One problem with the prose is that it comes across as too pompous and verbose, which is usually expected in Greek academic prose, but not in English academia. It's really a good article, so I didnt want to meddle with it too much. I also noticed that when you submitted it for FAT, one user asked for more info on certain topics. Could you possibly get that info and incorporate it? Druworos 13:13, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

If you are considering some extensive rewrites it may be helpful to use {{Inuse}} or its related templates (see Template talk: Inuse) for short stretches of time while you make big changes. I'm really happy to hear you're making a rewrite of Demosthenes. If I can be so bold as to give a small piece of advice, consider giving a look at fr:Démosthène (orateur); it's a featured article, and may have material useful for you (I noted you have French - 3). If you hadn't told me, I wouldn't have realized you weren't a native speaker of English... nicely done! I recommend, though, that you use simpler words rather than fancier words (like "took" instead of "pilfered"), unless you have a native speaker you can check with. That way, you'll avoid possible problems with POV caused by connotations that a dictionary doesn't mention. Good luck! Peirigill 01:13, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Greek or Geek?

No, that is not meant to be a jab or an insult, just an honest comment from a wiki-newbie. When I saw your article titled, On the Liberty of the Rodians, show up on the new article listing, I immediately thought of Greedo the fictional Star Wars character whose species is called Rodian. After seeing the contents, it helped remind me to Wikipedia:Assume good faith and not jump to conclusions. Pericles peer review

No human responses yet, but someone put up an automated review: Wikipedia:Peer review/Automated#Pericles, it seems some of the things are not too accurate, but some things are helpful. I will try to address some of those as well as have a look at Demosthenes on the weekend. But could you see if you have any references handy for two uncited statements using "is considered" in the Pericles article ("This is considered to be a monumental oration..." and "he is considered to be the first politician to...").--Konstable 12:13, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I'll do. The automated peer review is sometimes inaccurate. I've experienced it again and, according to me, it does not help so much, because its suggestions are too general and they donot refer to the specific article. restoration of npov on the Balkan wars

Since I see you are on the Wikipedia military history project, I'd like to ask you to take a look at the articles for the Balkan wars, and help keeping a semblance of neutrality on the pages (as well as ask other wikipedians to assist). It seems certain parties had literally taken over the entries, filling them with Bulgarian nationalist tripe for the past months. I've tried to restore some balance[2], but I honestly think the articles are going to need frequent checking up on, and perhaps a complete rewrite, if we are to respect NPOV policy. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that was written in there.

I'll chech the article for now. But, please, become a Wikipedian User with his own userpage and sign your edits, because now I've no idea with whom I'm talking to! You're right about all this crap in the article.--Yannismarou 07:37, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

yannismarou, thanks for the heads up on the ga nomination. It was tagged as long so i guess we will have to delete some of the info if we desire ga or fa status, something which will be dificult since nearly every sentence in the article is relevant and well supported. I'll leave the decision of what to delete and what not to you and i know there is plenty of elaboration and detail which we will just have to do without. Looking at your edits it is clear that you have a great understanding of the subject, a lot of resources, and most importantly the will to continue to improve the article. thanks for taking it to ga status and i know you can see it through to a model entry.

Re: FA nominations in Version 0.5

The short answer is because the requirement for inline citations is still relatively new, so we haven't quite gotten around to dealing with older articles systematically. While they do eventually wind up on FAR, mass nominations there have been discouraged (as there would be no chance of getting them fixed); hence, until they filter through the system, they remain FAs. Pericles/Sepentrionalis

It looks like you've been getting pretty frustrated with goings on at the Pericles FAC. I understand how you feel, and I remember how stressful my first nomination was, but it's important to stay cool. Sepentrionalis isn't trying to derail the candidacy or oppose the work people have put into the article, he's just insisting on a high standard for articles that are going to be featured. I'm going to give the article another proofreading and copyediting run-through; I suspect there will be at least a few things to fix. The prose is very good on a macroscopic level--the sections and ideas are very well laid out, and it's in general a pleasant read--but on a small, individual word level, I spotted a number of small mistakes that might not be easily apparent to a non-native speaker. I thought I'd picked them all out on my first sweep through the article, but it was 3 am by the time I finished that, and I was pretty tired, so I probably missed some stuff. In any event, Sepentrionalis isn't obligated to do the work himself; a lot of articles go through FAC, and reviewers wouldn't be able to keep up with the workload if they had to fix them all themselves. Don't worry about it, though; I have a little bit of time today and a lot more tomorrow to work on this, and we'll definitely see it through the process. I saw your comment on the FAC. This really isn't the right attitude. Although I agree that objecters should consider only the quality of the article, the same is true of nominators and supporters. If an objection appears to be based on the reviewer's opinion of the nominator, not the article, Raul will simply disregard it when he closes the nomination. Making hostile comments towards objecters, whether or not those comments are accurate, only clouds the issue. The Pericles nomination is going to succeed, as long as you, I, and the other supporters keep fixing any problems that people point out. Even if you disagree with the tone of an objection, the best thing to do is just to be professional about it, fix whatever problems with the article they may have pointed out, and trust that the FA director will do the right thing when he closes the nomination. Just let this argument slide--there's nothing to gain from keeping it going.
