Huh, that's funny. I didn't check the history - I didn't realize your article was so new since it was looking quite complete! I spotted his addition to the Band Aid article, and saw that it was mis-capitalized, so I went to fix that, saw it needed cleanup and did that, then went to move it to the proper title and discovered an already existing article. Ah, grasshopper, the answer to citations is easy -- just see Wikipedia:Footnotes! It boils down to:

1. Put your cursor after the period at the end of the sentence you want to footnote. Click "<ref></ref>" in the insert box (down underneath the edit box and the save/preview buttons).
2. Put your cursor between the "><". Type your citation, in any format that gets the point across. (If someone else thinks they can improve it, they will.)
3. Put your cursor under an existing or newly created "References" header, and click "<references/>" in the insert box.

That's it! Preview of course -- missing a closing tag can cause a citation to "eat" the rest of the article below the cite -- but it's easy. There's a few more subtleties if you want to name a source so you can re-use it elsewhere in the article, but you can always master that later. If you get bored with creating articles then have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Assessment‎, you can occupy your time looking at other schools pages and rating them ... only a suggestion. Derby School

Has improved a lot. One suggestion is .... inline refs. Not sure if you know that you can do this in a better way. Your list of refs wsould look muck more impressive. I could explain, but I worked on Tredegar. If you look at the ref list then it is very similar to yours. However if you look at the source then you will see that it was all assembled automatically. Thanks for the comments. I like the rearrangement. I wondered about trying to use a callout style (not quite sure how you do it, but I've seen it on other articles, for some of the material. For instance, I'm trying to track down my copies of the school magazine "The Derbeian" which will provide useful material and is perhaps an interesting topic in itself.OldDerbeian

List of Old Alleynians

First, I think that moving the Old Alleynian list of alumni to its own page is a good move. I like the way this works on other school sites because these lists can become cumbersome. Whenever I create a list from scratch I will now put it into its own page immediately, no matter how small the list. I had intended to do this with Old Alleynians just as soon as I had matched up the names on the Category for Old Alleynians and the List. No good reason why I hadn’t done so before finishing that exercise. As mentioned, I have also been matching up names in the Category:OldAlleynians to the List of Alumni. The list now contains all Old Alleynians in the category bar two.( These two I am dubious as to whether they should be in Wikipedia at all. One of them (Mark Clarke (politician)) certainly just appears to be a mini-CV for a prospective Conservative candidate rather than a mini-biography of an eminent ex-pupil – what are your thoughts? Going the other way, there are five or six on the list that do not appear in the Category by virtue of the fact that they currently have no entry. I was pleased to note that you recently created an article for James Jarvis (illustrator) which reduced this discrepancy. I followed suit with a small article for Rodney Clarke. You have probably noticed that I have been adding VC and GC holders to the various schools amongst the eminent alumni (such as for Old Alleynians and Old Marlburians etc among many others). When doing this, I noted that the Old Alleynian list was not organised in a friendly fashion (to me at least). So I rearranged and also noted that some eminent Old Alleynians that I am aware of did not appear (such as Wing Commander Brock, Wing Commander Stainforth, Sir William Holdsworth etc). Following this was I suppose the Wikipedia classic pattern of noticing that there were no entries for these, or stubs and deciding to create/expand. I must say that I do like your style of list at Old Greshamians. I am not a fan of the Old Carthusians list or Old Etonians chronological style (although with Eton’s vast alumni list I can see the reasoning). I feel that the Old Harrovians and the Old Rugbeians in alphabetical order is also less ‘browsing’ friendly than the categorisation by type. Sorry for the length of the message. DEFAULTSORT correction

Hi there. I noticed this edit where you added a DEFAULTSORT to Arthur Conan Doyle. Unfortunately, there was (a) already an existing DEFAULTSORT and (b) your DEFAULTSORT was incorrect. He should be sorted under "Conan Doyle, Arthur", not "Doyle, Arthur Conan". Having said that, I've looked through your contributions and seen that you've made a fair number of DEFAULTSORT additions. Would you be interested in looking at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Polbot 3? Eventually, there will be lists of people articles for editors to help with in selecting the correct DEFAULTSORT option from a list of possibilities. Hi, Carcharoth. I'm sorry that I didn't notice there was an existing DEFAULTSORT for Doyle, and I'm always happy to be corrected, but would you mind explaining your view that "Doyle, Arthur Conan" is incorrect? His surname was Doyle. Conan was a given name and was not used by his father Charles Doyle or his son Kingsley Doyle. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography lists him under 'D' as ‘Doyle, Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan (1859–1930)’. Regards, Xn4 23:55, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

List of Victoria Crosses by School

Thanks for the appointment. I was most pleased. You might want to know that I have painstakingly created List of Victoria Crosses by School, which shows a comparison between schools (fully cited of course). I would hope that many more schools will be added over time. I have noticed that it already has an AFD tag.. now that is keen! Am I allowed to be in the discussion for deletion as the creator? Snails and things!

Thanks so much for your birthday wishes.

I spent some lovely summers as a little girl with my family on holiday in the Loire valley, so I, too, have a taste for French food; yes, even snails, though I confess all I could ever really taste was the garlic butter in which they were cooked! Lady Jane Grey Trial

I am just curious what your source is/was for the addition to the Jane Grey article. Where did you find such detailed information about her trial? I was not aware that any English printed publication contained so much detail. PhD Historian 06:19, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Interesting. The online version of the ODNB does not contain that bit of info, but the entry for LJG in the online version was written by Alison Plowden. I wonder whether the article in the current print version of the ODNB might have been written by someone else? Anyway ... My interest stems from my current work on an academic biography of LJG. I've been working recently on transcribing and translating the Latin court documents that survive from her trial, and they seem to contradict the ODNB article you cited. But that is not big issue for right now. My work thus far suggests that much of what we think we "know" about LJG today is in fact the product of myths and legends and is not borne out by the primary source evidence. Plowden's biography of Jane relies heavily in secondary sources, I might note. Re-writing the ODNB entry on LJG will be a future project of mine, as soon as the bio is published (2008). Thanks! You'll see that I added the reference to Alison Plowden's article earlier today, and (indeed) wikilinked her name. But I'm puzzled - which particular bit of info which I have cited from ODNB does the article not contain?

The online version of the ODNB, in regard to Jane's trial, says simply "Jane, together with Guildford Dudley and two more of his brothers, stood trial for treason on 19 November. The proceedings were brief and formal and the accused duly condemned, but the emperor's ambassador reported that Jane's life would be spared." You may note first that the date is incorrect, though perhaps Ms Plowden amended it to New Style. But there is no mention in the online version of Plowden's article of Thomas White or Edward Stanley, the location of the trial, etc. But upon checking your footnotes, I see that you obtained that information from other articles, not the LJG article. That makes more sense, since I knew that Plowden had not examined the original manuscript trial records. They are in the National Archives Public Record Office at Kew, filed with the records from the Court of King's Bench. And I do indeed plan to post something on my Talk page as soon as the book becomes available. There will also be a posting placed on my personal website, www.somegreymatter.com. If you have not seen that site, you might be interested in having a look at it. As soon as the September issue of OUP's "Notes and Queries" comes out, I will be adding a page to my site on the subject of LJG's date of birth, arguing that the traditional date in October 1537 is quite wrong.
