Hi. yes I (may) need template like {{cite-book}} but with a few extra sub fields such as "sub-book" (the name of a book contained in a given volume - if that makes any sense)

I'm looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Cite_book&action=edit and I guess that I can guess enough to make my own variant..

Also another user has expressed an interest in being able to (if I've understood correctly)

a. Create an link in the reference which when pressed

i. Sends the information from certain fields to a external site/program which converts that data into equivalent forms for different editions of a book ie use the data in the fields in the reference, send it to an external site and produce a list of page numbers for different editions.

ii Opens that site.

(ie a lot like sending the information in the fields in the reference to a search engine)

List of notable Old . . .

Hey Xn4, I noticed you have done a lot of edits to these alumni list articles, and that they have been created with "notable" in the title. Per the WP manual of style guidelines for lists (found at WP:MOSLIST), the list titles should not contain "notable" or similar qualifiers: those qualifiers are assumed. As a result, I will be moving all of these articles to the similar name that does not contain "notable," and if you could help me out, I would definitely apprecaite it - its a big job. At a minimum, could I ask that, per the guideline, you not use "notable" or "famous" or any other similar qualifier in the title of any future list articles your create? Hello, UnitedStatesian. With all due respect, I think this is a matter for discussion. Wikipedia:Naming conventions: Lists says "Convention: Put a list of Xs as list of Xs, rather than Xs, famous Xs, listing of important Xs, list of noted Xs, list of all Xs, etc. Wikipedia:Lists (stand-alone lists) aims to be more restrictive, but then what you call 'alumni list articles' are not 'stand alone lists'. The following is at WikiProject Schools:Separate alumni pages: "It is not necessary to include "notable" in the article title. As everything on Wikipedia needs to adhere to Wikipedia:Notability (people) having "notable" in the title is redundant." The guidance then gives a link to List of notable Old Gowers, without adverse comment on it. The problem with these lists is that most 'alumni' (a word the Americans use much more than the British) are not notable, and users are inclined to clutter the lists up with red links to non-notable people who will never have an article. So, while it isn't necessary to include 'notable', it's useful, to remind everyone that these are not all-embracing lists. As this is an area I work on and it seems you don't, would you please propose your changes at the WikiProject Schools Talk page first and establish a consensus? I shall take part in that discussion, if there is one.

Given the status of the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Lists, I believe we have consensus around the omission of "notable" (and similar) from list names, combined with the inclusion of "notable" in the lead section of the list article. As a I result, I am going to resume my article moves to continue to increase the consistency in list article naming, and add "notable" to the lead section where I see that it is missing. When I was a child, back somewhere just shy of the Paleolithic Era, I used to think that "Reading Gaol" -and I did know about "gaol" and "jail" even having been born (and still live) in the colonies- would be a wonderful place to be incarcerated. Driver's license saga

Interestingly enough, I have contacted the both Arkansas & Texas's central driver control office, my local DC office (in Arkansas) and a Texas state trooper who works in their driver control division. I've pretty much gotten 4 different answers. I have an apointment to meet a lawyer, but I suspect he will not know. Additionally I have read the DC websites of both states, and niehter provide an adaqute answer. XM 07:39, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi. My comment was "Can't you find a suitable lawyer to advise you, XM? If you find the right person, you'll know where you stand in half an hour". The critical thing about getting any legal advice is to find the right person. The law is vast, and most lawyers know something worth knowing about a few small areas of it (family law, recovering debts, bankruptcy, conveyancing, trusts, etc.) and also try to cover far more ground than they know anything about. When you get into specialist areas, most people find themselves paying a generalist to learn on the job, which is why you foresee "I suspect he will not know". Xn4 14:54, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Sienna Guillory article

I'm really pleased to see someone making constructive edits to the article and it is truly appreciated. As you probably already know, I've been going through and attempting to get the Sienna Guillory article to Good Article Status, and it is currently under review. The issue at hand here, is that because Ms. Guillory is an English actress, her article should be written using British English. I'm American, and have no real knowledge beyond color --> colour... So, you see the problem here. Please Explain

I was automatically blocked yesterday, apparently because I have a shared IP address, and after being unblocked I edited the page at User:194.72.162.199 to read "194.72.162.199 is a shared IP address." Hey, I just saw this message. We (admins) have no way of seeing your IP address, nor, the IP of any user (Unless we have Checkuser permissions, which only a handful of us do.). If someone else is using the same IP as you (Over at the county hall?), and, they get blocked, and the blocking admin leaves the Autoblock enabled, anyone else from the same IP will get blocked as well. We still can't see the IP, and, wouldn't know if it will have any collateral damage or not. Anyhow, I hope that clears some of this up for you. SQL^{(Query Me!)} 19:12, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

I've now been unblocked. Thanks Xn4 for your comments here. I never have and never was anything to do with anyone else, it really was a coincidence (however big a coincidence one may think) that I happened to edit soon after Maleman said he was coming back. I am concerned that John Reaves could simply block my talk page without giving me a chance to respond, looking at his user page I believe he shouldn't have that sort of power, perhaps that's what it's all about for him. I wouldn't know how to complain about this, as I can't really understand the complaints process, it was all I could do to find the right link to try and get this sorted without being able to ask for help on my talk page. I hope I won't be blocked again, I only ever changed typos, I never have and never would change actual information as I would not consider myself more knowledgeable than someone else to do that, but I do know how to spell and where capital letters should be. Even though I'm unblocked, as you can see on my talk page I will still be being monitored for any 'disruptive' edits I may make, even though I've never made any, unless changing a spelling error is disruptive! I can only assume Xn4 that we work at the same place, and I apologize for the inconvenience of you being blocked because of this, although I hope you agree that this was completely out of my control and I have done all I could with limited resources to try and rectify it. I don't know much about technical stuff or IP addresses, does all this mean that Maleman has the same IP address as me or something, does it mean he works at the same place, seeing as all this started when I edited at work. I've been at home for the last week so surely my IP address must now be different to the work one? Splitting Durham School page and List of Old Dunelmians

I'm not sure if you are the person who has edited i.e divided Durham School from Old Dunelmians - if so, then thank you. I have researched and enetered most of the information on this site and thought that it was beginning to look a little messy. I shall continue to edit it in it's current format - still lots of work to do. The enries for WW1 come from a book that was commissioned by the school - no copyright issues. In Template:Derbyshire Schools you recently split the Independent group into 'Independent (senior)' & 'Independent (preparatory)' per discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools.

It's not clear from the discussions there that consensus was reached. Two interrelated issues were discussed:

• 'Independent' as a single NavBox group versus 'Independent (senior)' and 'Independent (preparatory)'.
• The danger that the NavBox could become unmanageably large.

Following your change to Template:Derbyshire Schools we have just three schools in the group 'Independent (preparatory)', of which two (Ockbrook and Repton) appear also in the group 'Independent (senior)'. At first glance this duplication seems to be increasing the likelihood of unmanageability for very little benefit.

The TES doubtless has good reasons for organising its data that way, but it is not obvious that those reasons (whatever they may be) automatically hold good for the Template:Derbyshire Schools NavBox. Are you sure it is really the right way to go? -Arb. 14:55, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

I did think we had a consensus about the preparatory-senior split, despite some objections to the inclusion of any prep schools at all. So far, no one has minded that split in other similar templates, and I see quite a good parallel between the TES approach and finding a suitable one here. I also see the difficulty for Ockbrook, which fitted neatly into a group called simply Independent. (Actually, Repton doesn't appear in two groups, as there's a separate article for Repton Preparatory School.) We can always have some flexibility, where needed. Would you like a third group in Template:Derbyshire Schools called Independent? These things are always open for discussion, and if you'd rather keep the independent schools-public schools split you could perhaps start a new thread at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools. The greatest problem, I think, is that there isn't any more a clear definition of what is and what isn't a public school. Xn4 15:21, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

You don't happen to know how to fix the coordinates do you? When you click on them and click on the link to something like Google maps, it gets it wrong. It's all right, the coordinates aren't supposed to display in the infobox, but at the top of the article: see the instructions at Infobox UK school. I also had some trouble with the infobox format, so I've added the coordinates in the {{coor dms}} template. Xn4 21:05, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Another large batch of great edits today, keep it up! I noticed you put it as a prep school. I notice that in the last few years the school has been phasing out the references to being a prep school, an example is that they have removed it from their school sign. Another reason why it should not been referred to as a prep school is the fact that in recent years very low numbers of pupils have sat common entrance, an exam that most 'prep' school pupils sit. Very few pupils go on to official public schools (I am pretty sure that The Leys is not one). It is just one term I am a stickler for :P Great edits though, Tiddly-Tom 23:01, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Tom. It's odd, then, that the lowest classes are still called the pre-prep school ! And all of the main continuation schools listed here (The Leys, The Perse and Oundle), and most of the others, are fed by prep schools. St Faith's looks very like a prep school to me. If we take that out, we'll need to amend the article on The Leys, which mentions "its associated prep school, St Faith's". Xn4 00:16, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Out of the schools you mention, only Oundle describes its self, in its article, as public. Also, I can confirm that the table has at least some of its figures wrong, and misses out at least one school... Tiddly-Tom 09:46, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

St Faith's is a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS). And I notice it "came joint 178th in the Times Online Top 250 Prep Schools". I think the 'public school' thing is a bit of a red herring. The vast majority of independent secondary schools don't use that term, nowadays. Xn4 13:55, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Firstly thanks for updating my award to note my year of membership. I appreciated the thought. I though you may be interested to know that a (small) picture of a Derby School old boy will be on the main page i the next 12 hours or so. Alleyne FitzHerbert is the lead DYK.
