Linking to templates

Hey there, noticed your comment that you werent sure how to do this. The easiest and best way is to use {{tl|templatename}} - simple as that! So, lets say you wanted to link to Template:User countries visited, just type {{tlu|User:EVula/Userboxes/countries visited}} which pops out as {{User:EVula/Userboxes/countries visited}} :) Hope this helps! I never knew an edit summaries reminder would get so heated. They are more than matters of absolute non-importance -- I can't imagine a software engineer not commenting their checkins to their analogous Concurrent Versions System. WP:ADOPT

Hi there,

As a current Adopter with the Adopt-a-User program there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention.

A new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you may have found useful as an Adopter, as well as recount any experiences that you think may help others. If you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.

Also the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user, on offering adoption please change the {{Adoptme}} template to {{Adoptoffer}} on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking.

Furthermore numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

Album Source comment

You made a suggestion on J Milburn's talk page that adding <ref>Album X, CD liner.</ref> would clear up the confusion I was having. My question is this, is that not another reference to something in my possession? If so how is it verifiable if there is no source on the web (or if there is an incomplete one)? I appreciate your attempt. And I am not saying it's wrong off the bat. It just seems to be that I'm caught in a circle. If I don't cite then it's not referenced. If I cite the booklet then it's not verifiable unless you own the disc or go buy it. If I cite another web page then it may or may not be correct and it looks like I used another persons work when I spent the time myself. Redirects

Redirect should -not- be fixed because they are absolutely harmless. Double redirects, on the other hand, where you have a redirect redirecting to a redirect, are fixed by one of the many other bots that get to it before I can. ★MESSEDROCKER★ 22:24, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Also, I am still unclear on who finally resolves a discussion on the CF page and decides what the outcome will be. Further info on translations

Thanks for responding to the "HELP" call for User:Technopat. Sadly, there's nothing directly addressing translations in the Wikipedia:Copyrights, it's just a derivative understanding of the basic copyright.

As I stated on Technopat's page, basically, a translated text is a derivative work, and as such subject to the original's copyright as well as the translator's. Therefore there would be an infringment of the copyright. Translations in general are subject to copyright. The main exception is that a translation made by an author who died more than 70 years will generally be in the public domain, but more recent works remain copyrighted.

It's normally OK to cite and link to such translations on the web but quotations from the translations are subject to 'fair use' rules. One may use very brief examples, a word or phrase here or there (Such as "The Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" begins with the words "Picture yourself in a boat on a river...") All quotations must be short and essential to the context. Some purists would say that more than 1 line is 'pushing it', and I'm sure that going over 2 or 3 would push it into a violation of the lyrics copyright.

Hope this helps - I work a bit on translating articles from German/Spanish/Italian into the English Wiki, and have run into this question many times in all of those languages!

Hey, There was a time that I edited a page, and I added a few lines and a paragraph and I saved it. And the next day, when i visited that article, my contributions were erased. I guess that there are people who saves their articles word-by-word in other writing program. And if there's someone who would change or edit something, they'll just copy-paste their article from that writing program, erasing the ones of the person who edited just a little bit. Gets? Hehehe... I mean, there are people who are so selfish that they want nobody to edit their article! So mean...

Email

You would be surprised how many people have other user's talkpages on their watchlist (part of the open system I spoke about). I have one on mine who is actually doing me a favor. I have 493 pages on my watchlist. Many were accumulated while I was on active vandal patrol. About a third are actually ones I really care about and contribute to regularly or just protect. When I came off active VP earlier this month, it was my intention to go back and clean up pages. Now, all I have to do is make a minor correction on a page and the other user does the majority of the work for me. Every so often I hit an orphaned page and watch the fun. :) Ronbo76 04:54, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I can see both sides of this debate. If I read the whole nom correctly, it kinds of boils down to two issues for me: choice and the ability to contribute as other users put it. If you side with the free choice debate, then it's keep in my mind. If it about your ability to contribute or not contribute based upon being in the category, then it goes contrary to what Wikipedia espouses: openness. Unless some user manages to seize on the second issue firmly and convince all that it is contrary to Wikipedia, I see this being a split vote. This is typically the type of AfD I avoid. I want my votes to show I care, thought about the debate and voted my conscience. Sometimes I will weigh in on definite WP:SNOW debates in the majority. But, I have also been a lone voice in the wind. That's why my comments in the TV talkpage are relevant. If you followed my thoughts there, you saw how in a matter of minutes, I had the info at hand, linked it and hopefully crystalized the conversation for others. That's what I do with an AfD. I read the nom, article, follow links and then do do-diligence voluntary research on the net to finalize my vote. I will incorporate typically my net research into my position.

I don't see where your ultimate position in the Wiki community will end up in jeopardy (unless I am really missing the debate and what you are asking me) - unless, someone somehow turns it into SNOW. Hope that helps. Ronbo76 05:17, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I read the debate several times after my initial assessment and again prior to this post. I still believe that the debate will be somewhat evenly split because it is a heated topic. And, unless someone can seize on the Wiki opensource edit option and convince all of it (which I find highly doubtful), I think it will end in tie unless the closing administrator tips it one way or the other. I do not believe that revealing your position would be detrimental unless you do one, if not all, of the following: 1) take an odd position that is non-supportable; 2) reveal something about yourself that leads others to question your debate choice; 3)continue to argue your position beyond two or three comments; and 4) violate the Wikipedia:Trifecta.

I stumbled on the Wikipedia:Trifecta last night. I sure wish someone had pointed it out to me when I first became a member. If you follow the links, I typically get tripped up by the DBAD community facet. But, once you get to know me, you will that I am not part of the Peter Principle.

Tactical call sign is TCS using have a number assigned. Aluminum cloud indeed is a Tomcat loaded for bear or a fight. Angels is altitude times 100 (can be 1000 if the trailing zero not utilized). Trifecta refers back to WP:TRIFECTA. Cruising means available.

Going back to add edit info

Can you go back and add info about previous edit? Since I didn't start making comments. I am the same when programming, but I eventually go back and add comments (months later when I no longer understand my code). I have already started, if that helps. I have been reminded of assuming good faith multiple times, but if you look beneath the surface he acts QUITE to the contrary. although i'll try to be a bit more good faith assuming, but if no progress is made for another few weeks or so.

'PING LINK' will take you to the proper CFD paragraph, to consider (reconsider) the discussion I added. Your vote was Merge per nom. Xiner (talk, email) 17:23, 14 January 2007 (UTC), which you can stay with, or strike through and revote. Since I found this so late, I notified everyone participating in that about the information I added. So I 'Pinged', which is apparently a tradition you haven't yet experienced. It simply means 'Hey, minor matter to look at'... it saves cluttering up talk pages with numerous (and unwanted sections). So 'PING', is such a minor notification. It comes from early days of DOS based and early windows based internet when you had to directly link to an IP, but might have a typo (or mis-remember) part in the twelve digit IP address. One had a utility to 'Test' the data loop, and the test was 'pinging' the interface. IT maintenance people still do use such a tool when you are having interconnectivity problems, it usually also returns the time and path of servers one transits getting the data loop 'echo'. A couple of questions

Hi Xiner,

I've been off-line for a couple of days. I just got a message from you that I found rather cryptic. It had to do with vandalising some page? Please clarify!?!

I'm trying to discern where the line is drawn between notability and a stub when dealing with an actor. See Scott Porter for an example. I added the stub note, but am wondering whether this article is a candidate for speedy deletion. I've looked at the Notability guidelines and find them to be somewhat subjective. For an actor, it lists "Name Recognition" and "A large fan base" as possible criteria. How am I supposed to know if this guy has a big fan base?

I also recategorized the entry, but wasn't sure whether to delete the links to currently non-existent categories (the TV show and musical he was in). What's the rule of thumb for categories -- should they all be live if they are in the box?

Wikifying and other mystifying things

Hi "adopter" (perhaps "Wikifather" or "Wikimother" would be better?)-

First of all, thanks for adopting me!

I started some tentative work on the Mettoy-Corgi article. For my tastes, it has far too much detail about individual models -- yet misses major aspects of the history of the brand! -- but I thought I have to start somewhere, and since it has been "tagged" for over a year now, I might as well just slowly start to go at it. So I began by adding a few subheadings (before they were added, was almost impossible to read). A few days later, somebody then added the following tag to the article: "This article may need to be wikified to meet Wikipedia's quality standards" etc. etc."

Can you state, in plain English, what that means? I tried to look it up but find the Wiki help pages rather... ummm... well, let's say circumlocutious.

I also have a few questions about the original tagging. As I said, it is officially "tagged" as an article that needs cleanup work. How does this happen? What does it mean? What does one need to do to get it "back on track"? Whom does one need to contact to have it reviewed? And why is there no indexing aside from "pages needing cleanup" etc.?

Some new questions:

1) On my page, you placed a paragraph on "User Warnings", with what appears to be a task for me to do. Is this intentional -- i.e. is this part of the adoption process, like a kind of homework -- or did you intend this for someone else? I honestly don't know! It just seemed to be apropos of nothing, but I don't know enough about how things run here.

2) On the Matchbox (toys) page, which was the first one I really worked on a lot, I have a question. You remember how I wanted to change it from "Matchbox (toy company)" to "Matchbox (toys)", which I did. Now somebody else changed it to "Matchbox Toys".

I feel this is an incorrect change -- the Germans say "Verschlimmbesserung", meaning maybe something like "deimprovement". Believe me, I am not "being sensitive because somebody changed something I wrote" or anything like that. I welcome improvements. But this is, again I believe, a case of incorrect facts. There is no trademark "Matchbox Toys". (As opposed to some of their competitors' names, such as Dinky Toys, which is -- as two words -- a trademark.) Thus I feel it is factually incorrect to have the article under the name "Matchbox Toys".

How does one go about solving a situation like this? I thought about it and wrote something on the talk page of the user who made the change. I am still awaiting his response, but nevertheless - what if he wants it that way but has no reasoning? What do you do in cases like that?

Esperanza controversy

Glad to explain, as best as I understand it. Have you read the two MfDs? They are (or should be, let me know if they arn't) linked from the main Esperaza page. Reading them should give you an idea of the magnitude and bitterness of the controversy. While I don't remember a specific statement about the category, I presume, as it does have some pages still in it, and it was rephrased to refer to Esperanza in the past-tense, that it was intended to be left to still help organize the remaining pages. The best person to ask would be the person who put the category text in the past tense (that'll be in the history). Hope this helps, and thanks for doing the scut-work at CfD. The user had removed info from at least two other articles (Five, Trotsky), so my radar was set off when he then removed nav boxes from two articles. Should I have handled it differently? In hindsight, yes, and I apologize for not making a bigger attempt at engaging the user in conversation. I did ask for an explanation in the edit summaries, though, and the user didn't respond, but only persisted in making the same changes. I should've done more, though, before it became 3RR. His edit to five(channel) was to remove trivial info that probably didn't belong in the article. His edit to Trotsky was to move some pics around. He didn't actually remove anything. My main concern is with you following him around at all.It's very dodgy waters here. We do check the contributions of a vandal to see if he vandalised anywhere else, but checking the contributions of people who clearly are not vandals isn't something people should be doing at all. cache, browser settings, etc., what is that supposed to mean?!

Look: I've listened to what several users have told me and I can't follow their instructions. Meaning, I can't understand them. What else am I missing here: User:Power level (Dragon Ball)/monobook.js... about that bypass stuff, what DOES it mean? what is browser address? Can someone explain this to me in simple terms? Layman's terms perhaps...

Warning IPs for old vandalism

Just a note; if an IP vandalises (but isn't warned), then several months pass without the IP editing, and then the IP edits again, warning the IP for the vandalism is probably pointless, as it's likely to be being used by someone else. Your addition of the warning to User talk:12.29.112.2 edit-conflicted me, so I removed the warning whilst adding the edit I was going to make anyway. Thanks! --ais523 18:29, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

RE: Help with Userpage Navigation

Yes, the images on the navigation bar above seem to keep moving every time you load the page and then when you hover over the image, it puts itself back into place. It did exist, and as far as I've read it was even more complete that the one here on en.wiki (although I can't really guess why); I didn't even know of its existence until this morning, though. I just happened to find a dead redirect on it.wiki, and I tagged it for deletion.

If you're curious, the article was proposed for deletion once on September 17, but it seems the author wrote some reasons for keeping it on the talk page, and the voters were moved (generally when a discussion like this take place the author starts insulting and accusing of censorship, and this wasn't the case), so the page was kept; on January 26 the page was proposed for deletion once again, and this time it was considered below the standards for a biography, as it didn't provide enough data on the actual persons involved.

Well, I can tell pretty obvious stuff of course--blanked pages, additions of expletives, etc. I can sometimes tell when a page has been vandalised more subtly, such as here[1]--usually by doing a little research. However, I don't know what I should do when I find someone who is repeatedly vandalising a page, or find a page that seems to be the subject of repeated vandalism, or how to get an opinion if I'm not really sure if something qualifies as vandalism. Also, I read about the counter vandalism unit, and I'm interested in that--is it something I can just sign up to do? And is the "recent changes patrol" an official patrol that I'd need to sign up for, or am I doing it just by checking recent changes (when I have time)? Frustration

Hi Xiner! I often find myself getting frustrated with people who don't share my understanding of what a well-referenced, encyclopedic article should be. I like to see citations and non-trivial statements. Call me crazy. Or anal.

Anyways, I recently put a "Citations Missing" warning on an article only to find it removed soon after. (I'm less annoyed that the "Fan Site" warning was also removed; an "Inappropriate Tone" warning might have been more appropriate.)

I have re-inserted the "Citations Missing" warning, and I am tempted to just do the work myself. But clearly whoever removed the warning is invested in this article and I am reluctant to get into some kind of editing war. So I am also tempted to let it go and walk away. What's your advice?

Warn template help pages

Hi Xiner. Maybe you want to bring it up at Wikipedia talk:Template messages/User talk namespace. I know they just completely revamped the warning system, so maybe they haven't gotten around to the help pages yet. Subst explanation is tricky no matter what you do--I haven't read the explanation page but I know it took me a little while to understand it, just because there is coding involved. I suppose people assume that if you've been around enough to start reverting vandalism, you probably know what subst: is by then. Alright, I can't help it, I've to say that my message, while TOTALLY UNNECESSARY, was in response to this edit, which continues a long tradition of people wondering if passages about certain people raping others could've been part of our pages on radiology, metereology, and whatnot. More qstns.!

Hi Xiner,

• I've come across an empty cat. -- Category:Francophone Canadians. WP:CFD tells me to use {{db-catempty}} to speedy del. an empty cat. But I am not sure the category should be deleted. Maybe it should be used instead. I guess this is kind of a non-question, because I could just ignore the whole thing or figure out what articles should populate the cat. Do you have an intermediate course of action to recommend, like flagging it for discussion on WP:CFD or something else?

• I know this sounds ironic, given how often articles need more sources, not fewer. The Jack Kerouac article has an incredibly long list under the Further reading section. In fact, the whole article reads like a college paper (or several combined). It is barely footnoted, and there is already a warning box on it for that. I added a warning regarding the writing style. But I couldn't find an appropriate warning for the length of the list.

actually i have yet to meet an editor that doesnt use wikipedia for their "soapbox"...every editor has their version of "how it is"...some are more subtle in their soap boxing than others...some merely delete things: its untouchable soapboxing...(im not accusing you at all Xiner)...its another editor i have in mind on the "deletion soap boxing"...i prefer to add material than remove it when at all possible...a "wikipedia creationist"?...anyways most talk pages read like blogs...and thats good...thats what they are for...and thats what adds some interest...ive had a doctor tell me on a talk page "my family likely doesnt use the swiss trains & im choking on CO2..."...its the actual article pages that we have to keep an eye out for excessive soap boxing...yet they will always be soap boxes...someones version or a combo of versions gets put out...its the nature of any encyclopedia including wikipedia..."an encylopedia is a soapbox"...we just try and make it as accurate and squeaky clean a one as possible...Benjiwolf 18:00, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Descendant of the Dragon

Hi, the specific phrase "龙的传人" was first coined by Taiwanese (ironic, eh?) musician 侯德建 (zh:侯德建) in the late 1970s, and subsequently popularised by the song of the same name. There has been considerable academic opinion that the concept of "descendants of the dragon" as a badge of pride started around that time, and could not have been much older.

The evidence they raised for this include, first, during the imperial era, only the emperor and the emperor's descendants are descendants of the "dragon". Anyone else claiming to be a descendant of the dragon would be committing treason. Secondly, the dragon was the symbol of the Emperor. Thus in the Republican era anyone who supported the "dragon" was by implication a monarchist and counter-revolutionary. Similarly in mainland China after 1949.

In any case, it is clear that the phrase "龙的传人" cannot be of pre-modern pedigree since its use of "的" does not accord with classical grammar.

Incidentally, the song "龙的传人" started life as a patriotic propaganda song in Taiwan, which is why it was banned in mainland China for several years, before becoming popular there as well (in the 1980s). --Sumple (Talk) 22:33, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
