Barnstar for work with Marshallsumter's articles

edit
  The Barnstar of Diligence
I'm awarding you this barnstar for taking the time to review, edit and/or delete articles related to User:Marshallsumter's WP:SYNTH-farm. Thanks! AstroCog (talk) 14:49, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much :) I appreciate it. I just couldn't, in good conscience, respect a consensus to delete all the articles that user had created unless I had a pretty good idea that there was nothing really salvageable. And I still think that there WAS a small fraction of his work that we could have saved, but it was so little that I'm not regretful of the final outcome. The amount of hours to recreate the relevant data would be less than the amount of hours it would take to painstakingly fact check every line of his 100+ articles. edit

I don't know what to makie of this. [[1]] They claim to be Morrison's management, and seem pretty het up. If they had something on the public record they could cite then they'd have a point. Instead they keep asserting a version, which'd be great, y'know, if. MartinSFSA (talk) 09:41, 14 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea. The only thing I was concerned with at the time of my reversion was that his edit was disruptive in nature, and involved comments that were more suited to the article's talk page than to the article itself. I'm not familiar with the actual merits to his argument, only with how he chose to display them. Trusilver 14:48, 14 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure you intended to do this. That user blatantly added information without consensus. Calabe1992 (talk) 23:57, 14 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hmmmm.... well you are right I didn't intend to do that. It seems that I reverted his edit, then subsequently reverted my own edit back. That's odd, but thank you for bringing it to my attention. Trusilver 00:00, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
It probably had something to do with the fact that I was reverting the same edit (with Twinkle) at the same time. Your revert worked, but my warning was posted. I'm guessing Huggle improperly notified you of an error. Calabe1992 (talk) 00:02, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I love Huggle, but it glitches every once in a while and doesn't always tell you it's glitching. Like last night when I reported someone to WP:AIV on their first offense :) Trusilver 00:14, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Just keeping you up to date

edit

Thank you for joining the WP:RFA2011/Task force. here is a copy of a task force message that was sent out yesterday before your name was added to the list.

RfA reform - What you can do now

We're getting casual messages on some of the talk pages that this reform project is either dormant or even dead. In fact this couldn't be further from the truth. The purpose of WP:RFA2011 is to focus attention on specific areas of reform and to develop solutions around them..

The object of WP:RFA2011 is not to make it either easier or harder to become an admin - those criteria are set by those who !vote at each RfA. By providing a unique venue for developing ideas for change independent of the general discussion at WT:RFA, the two clearly defined goals are:

  1. Improving the environment that surrounds RfA in order to encourage mature, experienced editors of the right caliber to come forward, pass the interview, and dedicate some of their time to admin tasks.
  2. Discourage, in the nicest way possible of course, those whose RfA will be obvious NOTNOW or SNOW, and to guide them towards the advice pages.

However closely RfA and desysoping are related, the WP:RFA2011 project is not for discussing changes to length of tenure, reconfirmation, or disciplinary measures. Like proposals for radically different admin selection processes, these can be discussed elsewhere.

What we need to understand is that all Wikipedia policy changes take a long time to implement even when the project for change is clearly making progress. A lot of work is constantly taking place at WP:RFA2011, such as monitoring the talk pages, organising the project pages, researching statistics, extrapolating data, making tables and graphs, and keeping them up to date. These items are needed, because without them, changes to this kind of policy do not get made,

RFA2011 is now ready to propose some of the elements of reform, and all we need to do now is to pre-draft those proposals in the project's workspace, agree on the wording, and then offer them for central discussion. Now is not the time to clutter the project with repeated explanations and mini debates for newcomers who who have not read read the project's talk pages. Their time for comment will come when the reform items are offered to the community for discussion, at which moment they will be more than welcome to express their opinions in order to build consensus for or against any proposed changes..

Are you ready to help? Please consider contacting a coordinator to let us know which of individual reform items you would like to work on.

The Power of the Press

edit

Dear Trusilver,

I made an addition to this page which you said was "non-neutral." I humbly disagree. I wrote, "The 1943 Columbia picture of the same title is not a remake, being a different story about a corrupt tabloid." This is an absolute statement of fact and is neither an opinion nor "slanted." If the word "corrupt" bothers you, it refers to the storyline, not any sort of judgment about the film itself. (The plot deals with an editor who frames an innocent man for murder in order to increase sales by hyping this phony "exclusive.") I (again) humbly request that this completely factual addition be reinstated.

Best wishes, Michael Schlesinger Sherman Oaks, CA — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.194.226.56 (talk) 06:36, 20 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely. You can go ahead and add it back in provided you cite a source for the addition that is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Once you have the correct source, go ahead and cite it as you add the edit back in. If you find you are having difficulty doing this correctly, please let me know and I will help you to add the correct citations. Have a good day. Trusilver 06:42, 20 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

A rainbow for you!

Hello. You recently made this revert and delivered this warning. It looks like you made a mistake. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Wikipedia:WikiProject China/NNU Class Project, so that if you see these types of edits/editors again, you will be appraised of the situation. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 11:52, 21 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

You are right, because familiarizing myself with a project I don't care about is going to make all the difference in identifying the good faith efforts of a brand new editor that puts up a reference that intermittently gives a 403 error. Damn, I'll keep that in mind. That said, it's possible that the filters can be changed to attempt to auto-ignore the contributions of this group (who all seem to share reasonably similar syntax in their usernames) and at least prevent them from setting off the vandalism alarms. I will see what I can do. Trusilver 12:27, 21 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

What gives? I know I'm pretty new to this, but I always reference my sources, so your accusation of bias is unwarranted. I try to be as objective as my (verifiable and academic) sources allow me, especially given the fact that an obviously mainstream view such as the west Eurasian ancestry of northern Indians is often maligned and falsely treated as debunked by Hindutvadis and others, when the majority of genetic studies indicate the contrary. Anyway, I modified the passage and restored it. It is, upon careful reading, quite neutral, especially if you check my sources.

Yours in friendship,

Bodhidharma7 (talk) 04:48, 26 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I honestly have no idea. I am almost positive I reverted your edit in error because on second look, I don't see anything at all wrong with it. Please go ahead and put it back in, I have already looked over the references and am striking the warning against you. The only thing that I would have changed from the original edit is to attempt to use more neutral wording than "Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary". It's not necessarily a bad thing to say, but just give a suggestion of POV that is probably better off not to be there. If you have any questions, comments or anything, don't hesitate to ask! Absolutely. My time lately has been in little bits and pieces whenever I happen to be online, but I'm sure I have the time to take a look at it and give some insights. Normally I tend to stay away from the articles of aircraft I fly or have flown in the past just to keep from getting into WP:OR hassles. edit

Hello. I noticed that you reverted an edit I recently made on the List of Picnicface episodes. I was wondering why you did. I thought that it was appropriate, because it was just a list of the sketches in the episode. I thought that I had covered the episode well in the new summary I wrote. Yep, you are right, sorry about that. It's late and I'm getting a little punchy. It was the mmmuffins that tripped me up. Adding extra letters to a word trip vandalism filters. I'm whitelisting your name so that you don't show up on the Huggle filters any more. I'm striking my note on your talk page and I've already restored your edit. Re: Darkness Falls The Crusade

edit

The entire page lacks citations. I'm fine with the page being deleted, but the fact of the matter is that there are almost no records left concerning the game except in the form of player logs. Saying that personal experience is irrelevant in that context is meaningless, because everything posted about the topic is based on individual memories. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qalnor (talkcontribs) 01:22, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is not an outlet for your own personal observations. I'm not particularly concerned with what's already there, but I have seen the additions that you are trying to add, and they lack any kind of references. If you can dig up references, then post the material. If you have a hard time figuring out how to properly cite (it's a little tricky the first time) I will help you. Trusilver 01:26, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Then petition to have the entire page deleted, because it's all based on individual memories. There is not a single citation on the page. I care a lot about that game, but talking about DFC without talking about corruption is like talking about the LAPD without ever mentioning Rodney King. The only difference is that there are actual records concerning Rodney King whereas DFC is a dead mud with no verifiable records and player accounts are literally the only source apart from an inaccurate helpfile that nobody would even pretend pertains to the game as it exists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qalnor (talkcontribs) 01:38, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Russia House

edit

Hello. You just reverted an edit I made to the sentence, "The CIA / SIS are not inclined to subject him to interrogation, or extract any other sort of revenge, reasoning that the KGB has already worn him down, gotten the information they needed." on the grounds that it didn't seem constructive. Surely the sentence as quoted is ungrammatical and uses inappropriate vernacular? I'd suggest that at the very least the final comma should be replaced with an 'and' to provide proper conjunction, and further that 'gotten' should be replaced with something less colloquial. In my initial edit I substituted 'obtained'. This is my first edit, so apologies if I've acted out of turn. Illinois County, Virginia

edit

You should look at external links and use your judgment before deleting them from pages. Simply making a list of sites and automatically deleting them without reading them is not helpful to readers or wikipedia itself. The link was to a map that clarified confusion users were having distinguishing Illinois Country from Illinois County. It was useful, appropriate, and followed guidelines. You apparently did not look at it before deleting. If you are using a bot, this is only another example of why they should not be allowed. Harnlp (talk) 06:42, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I looked over the site quite a bit before deleting it. It is a tiny, nearly useless map that is surrounded by oh-so-many commercial links. You may explain why this link is supremely pertinent to the article before I revert it again. See WP:ELNO, bullet point number five. The link would be fine except that the entire useful portion of the link seems there as an afterthought to get people to click on commercial links. In the meantime, I'm assuming good faith and not deleting the link again for a day or so because I feel you are genuinely trying to be helpful and there is no evidence of commercial linkspam in your edit history. Trusilver 06:53, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
If I was was wrong about the bot I'm sorry. Its one of the main reasons I choose not to contribute to wikipedia on a regular basis. I write something and minutes after saving it's deleted after hours of research. In regards to this specific link, I don't usually pay any attention to adds on sites. This site apparently has one large add under the title with fill in blanks which I agree is misleading, but hardly unusual on the internet. Below that, however, is an extremely useful interactive map that allows the user to click through the years and watch the Virginia counties, including Illinois County 1778-1784, evolve through time. I added the info and the link because several people keep confusing Illinois County, Virginia (a historical extinct county) with Illinois Country (a term used to describe an area east of the Missisippi). They previously redirected the Illinois County, Virginia page to Illinois County, blanked the Illinois County page and redirected to Illinois Country, and added a distinguish template to Illinois County creating a circular redirect. Very confusing to people researching historical Virginia. I thought the map was necessary to alleviate some of the confusion. I'll leave it up to you to decide weather to leave it or not. Harnlp (talk) 08:22, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I'm always wary when the first thing in front of me when I click a link is an ad (yeah, that first ad was what immediately made me react negatively), but the content of the site is directly applicable to the article. I have certainly seen MUCH worse sites in external links sections before, so I'm not going to sweat this one too much. Have a good day and happy editing. Trusilver 09:19, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see. Then the correct way you should have framed the inquiry on the talk page was in the form of a coherent, intelligent-sounding question as to why the article exists considering it is a fan-made game. That would have been helpful for us to understand your rationale whereas "WTF, why is this here?" is not. Trusilver 23:25, 5 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Adminship

edit

Hey, Trusilver, you should re-nominate yourself for adminship. Spidey665 00:10, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Good God, why would I want to do something like that? Under certain circumstances, I might one day accept a nomination, but I wouldn't even consider volunteering for such a thing. Being an admin has its upsides and its downsides. The upside, especially when it comes to anti-vandalism (which is primarily what I used them for), is that the tools make you faster and more efficient. The downside is that it's very easy to become mired down in bureaucracy. My losing the mop was the best thing that could have happened to me at that given moment in time because the alternative would have been permanent retirement - I had gotten so frustrated and disillusioned with the project that I was on the verge of quitting anyway. Losing the mop was what kept me on the project, it changed my focus away from all the irritants that I couldn't change, and focused me back on the reasons I started editing to begin with. I have certainly grown since then and cultured a very strong ability to not give a fuck. Would being an admin again change that? Would it turn me back into a stressed out, surly administrator who is pissed off at anyone and everyone on the project? I really don't know. I'll say the same thing that I said a year and a half ago... maybe one day. Trusilver 00:23, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
My bad, there. Spidey665 00:28, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, I'm glad I got someone's attention. Can we PLEASE do something about the Jobs' daughter article? She has no right to be on there, she is a nobody (Don't tell, they'd banish us you know!) and the page needs to be deleted. Is there anywhere I can post my opinion about wanting the article deleted? I commented on the discussion, but you removed it. (Not mad, just asking.) 166.248.32.55 (talk) 04:14, 6 October 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.248.32.55 (talk)

While it is true that notability is not inherited, Lisa Brennan-Jobs is notable under the criteria in WP:JOURNALISM. I've looked over the references on her article, and I have no issue with her article at all. Also, vandalizing the article in order to get someone's attention is going to work, but it's not the kind of attention you want. Trusilver 04:29, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Seabasing

edit

Original read this:

Seabasing is a naval capability that provides commanders with the ability to conduct selected functions and tasks at sea without reliance on infrastructure.

My edit read this:

Seabasing' is a naval capability that provides commanders with the ability to conduct selected functions and tasks at sea without reliance on infrastructure ashore.

Not sure why you wouldn't see this as constructive but I'm not going to fight you about it beyond this explanation. The phrase "without reliance on infrastructure" literally means without any reliance on infrastructure whatsoever. Not possible. The phrase "without reliance on infrastructure ashore" with the added adverb "ashore" clarifies that naval operations are able to operate absent land-based infrastructure (such as maintenance facilities, docks, supply depots, etc.). The "ashore" wording is the way the only source for this document states it, which I had to refer to because the wikipedia entry made no sense. Let me know if you're still confused. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.180.133 (talk) 15:05, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ravens Wood School

edit

That will be the last time I attempt to contribute to Wikipedia. I work in education in the Bromley Borough and my intention was to provide more detail on a story which shocked many in the borough and around the country. I felt that the details I added, all of which were widely available on news websites, were of importance to people whose children may attend this school, either now or in the future. Therefore I was extremely disappointed to find my contribution to Wikipedia removed by a stranger within seconds of its posting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.162.29.77 (talk) 16:25, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please read WP:NPOV. You might notice that the original entry to the article was neutrally worded, yours was not. We cite sources here, we don't just add random information wherever we think it might belong in an article. While this is definitely in a lot of major news sources, we don't add controversial information without putting a reference in your edit. I'm extremely dismayed to see someone who says they work within an educational system, yet apparently does not see the necessity of properly citing your work... something that (at least where I'm from) is drilled into students from a reasonably early age. Madnahar Jr. High School

edit

Please note that this does not appear to be a "high school," as you supposed in your Keep !vote in the AFD, but a "junior high school," which is a lower grade level institution which has typically not survived AFDs, but rather has been merged to the larger level administrative unit or institution or locality of which it is a part, just as Middle schools are treated. (I assume it is not a high school named after someone named "Mr. Madnahar, Jr.," as in the case of "Leland Stanford Junior University") Edison (talk) 22:13, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kody rainwater (talkcontribs) 03:19, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I went a step further and removed the entire notable alumni section, seeing that all the entries were redlinked individuals who do not currently have articles. Generally speaking, it is inappropriate to add a person to a "notable alumni" section unless they actually do have articles on the project. Furthermore, Wikipedia is not a memorial, and adding the birth and death years of someone with "RIP" is neither encyclopedic nor appropriate. I hope this answers your questions, have a good day. Hey, I would really like to know more about commercial airline piloting. Would you be able to give me some real good tips on how to become one? I love flying and would like to know more about becoming a pilot :). Sorry if I messed up your talk page, I'm not really familiar with usertalk. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Collins432 (talkcontribs) 05:14, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, it depends a lot on exactly where you are in life. A majority of commercial pilots (myself included) are ex-military aviators, simply because that's the easiest way to get in the door. Flight school for your commercial and ATP license is VERY, VERY expensive without the government picking up the tab. Without the military, it costs about 50k dollars to go through a commercial flight school to get your commercial, ME and instrument ratings. That is enough to get you in the door, but not as easily as having your ATP license which is VERY hard to get without the military, because you need a minimum of 1500 hours flight time to get it. The job market for pilots has been grim for the last few years for those of us that HAVE our ATP, it's worse for pilots who don't. Trusilver 05:39, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nice, well I just started college right now and was thinking about joining ROTC. Do you think I could have a chance at getting in at the Air Force Academy? Also what kind of aircraft did you fly while you were in the military? ‎ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.175.86.55 (talk)‎ 23:38, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you are aiming for the Air Force Academy, you want to try to tailor your college years in that direction. Join ROTC? absolutely. You also should attempt to go major in something that gives you points with admissions, degrees in engineering, math, physics, etc. look good on you, as does an extremely high GPA. (This isn't a necessity though, my college major was in English Literature.) If you can scrape together the money for the lessons, getting your private pilot's license is a step in the right direction too. (This costs from 6-9k dollars, depending on how fast you progress and what type of plane you are renting.) There are medical qualifications too. I can't remember what all of them are, but your natural vision needs to be no worse than 20/50 and you can't have any hearing impairment. If you are really serious, I would go before you make any big plans and see a doctor that is licensed to do FAA flight physicals and made you you can pass your class 1, because if you can't, everything else is a lot of work for nothing. As for aircraft, I am checked out on a few, but I spent nearly all of my military career flying a KC-10. Trusilver 01:23, 9 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Something I heard today that only another military man would fully appreciate: "The reason the branches of of the armed forces don't get along is that they all speak a different language. For instance, take the phrase 'Secure the building'. The Army will post guards around the place. The Navy will turn out the lights and lock the doors. The Marines will kill everybody inside and set up a headquarters. The Air Force will take out a 5 year lease with an option to buy." Thanks you for the thought :) And yeah, ever since the wikilove tab has been added, barnstars and mugs of beer fly through the air like shrapnel. Trusilver 05:21, 10 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I haven't heard that one yet but I will steal it. An older joke that I'm sure you've heard is how the Marines view the difference between how the Marines and the Air Force build a new airfield once congress authorizes one. The Air Force builds all the brick barracks, officer and NCO clubs, base exchange, commissary, churches, craft shops, etc. and then when they run out of money tell congress they need more funds to build the airstrip and gunnery ranges, which was the original purpose of the base. The Marines on the other hand, build the airstrip first, then the training ranges and when they run out of money go beg congress for a few more bucks to air condition the Marine's tents and add more mosquito netting. Which service is smarter?  :) Semper Fi! Veriss (talk) 06:11, 10 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
