Piscataquis Village Project

Was denied submission due to problem with the sources. I had one source, a local weekly newspaper with a circulation of 34,500, I submitted a link to the online version of the article. Is the problem with the quantity or quality of this citation?Spaceman1958 (talk) 20:15, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

It seemed that this one local source was not sufficient to establish notability for this project. You will need multiple reliable, third-party sources about this project that will warrant its inclusion into Wikipedia. You may want to check out WP:NOTE for more specific details about notability. Cheers! Topher385 (talk) 20:25, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Steve Caplan

The blanking at Steve Caplan could have been interpreted as a request for G7 speedy deletion, rather than something that required a warning. The User talk:Scaplan was the article creator, and none of the other edits to the article were substantial. VQuakr (talk) 17:33, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

I considered that which is why I paused before issuing the warning. However, since he deleted what appeared to be an already existing deletion tag, I went ahead with it anyway. Thanks for catching that.Topher385 (talk) 18:21, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

So You think the Wikipedia should not have a page about nice ships, like Naida?

Really don't understand this. Maybe we will left only a pages about notable terrorists, or other well known a*** pain people like politics, and nothing really nice and worth taking a look. I really don't understand Your criteria, and ever think that won't take part in this project any more.

The most thing is that probably this page takes less space (only text, and much less that half MiB) at server, that Your not worthy of seeing and full of -what I am a big "guide" man- user page on Wikipedia. Who want to known that You are working on this project? Probably there is not an single people - why You just even had an source, that at least small newspaper, printed in garage won't write about You. And Your page is blocking funds of Wikipedia and space on server. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.68.102.116 (talk) 06:43, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm sure that it is a fine ship indeed. However, it simply seemed that it was not written from a neutral point of view and its notability was in question. You are certainly welcome to resubmit it after making some edits. My comments were in no way a criticism of the ship itself. Cheers! Topher385 (talk) 13:11, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Your edit on Customer Value Models

Hi, something went wrong with this edit you made to Customer Value Models, you intended to remove the AfC tag, but you removed all of the content of the article as well. I see from the edit summary that you were using a semi-automated tool, WP:ACH, it may be a bug with that tool. It is a good idea, when using an automated tool, to check the results for unintended consequences. Thanks, Quasihuman | Talk 12:13, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. This was the first time I had used that particular tool, and it seems that there are some issues still to be worked out. Thanks again! Topher385 (talk) 13:13, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

New article Olaf Bork

Hi! A few hours ago you have declined the submission of that article. In my opinion, the person featured in the article meets the notability criteria. He has been awarded "a well-known and significant award or honor" (the order of merit of his homecountry), which is one of the criteria for biographies. However, the article was lacking reference to a source for this decoration. It has been added by now. Therefore I ask you to have a second thought about accepting that article. Thank you! --84.151.165.231 (talk) 07:19, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Rollback granted

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you can be trusted to use rollback correctly, and for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. Pale Moon (web browser)

You rejected the creation of the page for the Pale Moon web browser based on lack of reliable sources. The sources listed are the program's official web page (which is considered a reliable source) and 2 external news sites/blogs that are run by professional reviewers who made independent reviews of the program (lifehacker and betanews, both renowned sources by the community). For a program that is not mainstream enough to actually make headline news on CNN, this is already pretty good notoriety - what more would you need?

There are plenty more reviews on software download sites like Softpedia and a plethora of less known sites; Short of making a really long list of links (which would actually decrease the quality of the wiki page), there isn't all that much more that I can think of doing. I'm not a Wikipedia expert... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wolfbeast (talkcontribs) 21:24, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

It's quite possible that I chose the incorrect reason for declining the submission from my menu when I reviewed your article, which does happen from time to time. However, if you have re-submitted it for review, either I or another reviewer will take a look at it again to evaluate any changes you have made. Cheers! Topher385 (talk) 03:32, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Michael Phelps Foundation

Hello Topher385. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Michael Phelps Foundation, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Previous deletion was not via AfD, though it has been deleted 3 times per G11 or A7 and salted - see deletion log. I haven't checked the previous versions, but if as reviewer you think it may be OK , you should check with Orangemike (talk) who salted it. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 15:59, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Articles for creation/Gombong (city)

Hello. I've improved the article about Gombong [1]. There's an article about a South Korean mountain named Gombong. It's wrongly linked from the article Banyumasan language. If you make a search about Gombong in Wikipedia or Google, they're talking about the city/region of Gombong in Java, Indonesia, in most of the cases. That was my reason about creating the article.

3 notable facts:

  • The inventor of the speed camera was born there.
  • The second President of Indonesia was military instructed in Fort van der Wijck (a notable Dutch military compound).
  • There are dinosaur statues there. People love dinosaurs!

Why I can't make that correction? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.38.112.103 (talk) 22:28, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

I will agree that the city may be an interesting one. However, being interesting does not always necessarily mean that it is notable enough for Wikipedia. It is the job of the editor (you) to provide evidence of the subject's notability via the sources used to cite the article. So far, it does not appear that you have demonstrated this. Your sources should be about the city and why it is important and not simply mention the city's name or its attractions. They should also be from reliable sources such as newspapers, magazines, books, journals, etc. and should be independent of anyone associated with the subject. This will establish the city's notability and thus its inclusion into Wikipedia. Good luck and happy editing! Topher385 (talk) 22:34, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

There are (aprox) 13 articles directly or indirectly referencing Gombong in the English Wikipedia. It's an article approved in some foreign Wikipedias. Could anyone translate it and improve my stub? There is an article about a South Asian mountain which could confuse anyone to think that Banyumasan language is spoken in South Korea. I think my stub reduces the level of confusion. I've sourced my sentences with 3 references. It's the place of birth of people enough notable to be in Wikipedia like Maus Gatsonides and Jan Hamer. Maybe there's more notable infomation in foreign Wikipedias and the interwiki linking could help (I really like that feature). I know Gombong is notable because, at least, share name with a notable mountain in a near but different country, and that needs a disambiguation page. Could you help me? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.38.112.103 (talk) 23:42, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Travel Technology Interactive

Hi Topher385! Thank you for reviewing the Travel Technology Interactive article. It is always hard to keep a neutral point of view when you use information from the internet, and that is why my main source of reference to edit the text was Amadeus IT and Sabre wikis (listed in the See Also). I tried to remain as neutral as possible and have removed the part telling about the company's solution, altough Sabre's wiki page really looks like a copy/paste of an advertisement. I would also point out that there are reliable sources such as IATA and other companies. Moreover, I created this article, as this company is on NYSE Alternext and its revenues are used to calculate the Alternext index. Hopping that the next review will be accepted!

Broadband Choices

Hi Topher385,

Thanks for the message on my talk page, and for the review of the Broadband Choices page.

I would like to ask about your opinion on the piece, namely "Declining submission: subject appears to be non-notable web content)".

Perhaps I may have underplayed the importance of this brand in the Wiki piece, but that was not because they are not important, it is because I was doing my utmost to by non-promotional. Being honest though, the Broadband Choices brand really is extremely important.

For one thing, Price_comparison_service as an industry, is deemend important enough for it's own page, and Broadband Choices are one of THE most important brands in the UK price comparison marketplace.

For that, and the following reasons, I feel that the Wiki company page is not just web content, as the company certainly is not just a web site, and that the company is indeed notable, for the following reasons:

  • The multi-million turnover brand were one of the first to be awarded Ofcom (the UK regulatory body) accreditation for comparison sites, which is designed to protect consumers.

    • They actually provide their technology to direcly power some extremely large brands:

- Tesco - GoCompare.com - Confused.com - Uswitch - Comparethemarket.com

- Broadband Choices also have over 20 more partners, in addition to the ones mentioned above.

All of whome are deemed notable enough to have a Wiki page dedicated to their brand. Obviously Tesco has a brand without their comparison service, but as the latter few are web-based comparison services, who's broadband comparison services are directly powered by Broadband Choices, I feel that as individually, they are notable brands (with Wiki pages), surely the fact that ALL the above large brand's comparison services use a single provider for their broadband comparison technology, means that the company that single handedly provides this technology, to power all these notable, large brands is, in itself, thereby a notable/important brand/company?

      • The Broadband Choices brand are also used by the mass media in the UK as sources of authority information on broadband matters by several leading UK media outlets, from the Bbc to the The_Daily_Telegraph, The_Guardian to the Daily_mail.

I firmly believe that as the brand provides the technology behond several extremely large brands (who have Wiki pages, as they are notable), as they are also used as a source for authority news by several large media organisations (who have Wiki pages, as they are notable), and as the brand was also one of the very first brands to gain Ofcom approval (who are the UK regulator, protecting consumers), then the Broadband Choices brand is certainly a notable one.

I look forward to hearing your response, and I am happy to make changes as you see fit to the article.

As I mentioned in my comment, it seemed that you sources simply mentioned this company or were from the company's own website which, unfortunately, is not considered reliable for establishing notability. Simply because other similar companies are notable enough for Wikipedia does not necessarily mean that this company is as well. Notability is not transferred by default. You must demonstrated that this company is notable through reliable, independent sources. Furthermore, you may want to rework your article a bit as it seems a bit like an advertisement rather than an encyclopedia article. I hope this helps. Cheers! Article creation: Wallace E. Oates

This economist is one of only four economists listed on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_economists to not have his own wikipedia site. If he is notable enough to be on that page, he is certainly notable enough to have his own page, like all but three other economists on that page. I have a B.A. in Political Science and am working on an M.P.A. and have done extensive research in the field of public economics. His name appears quite frequently. Tenicho5 (talk) 05:14, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

You must demonstrate via your sources that he is a notable academic. Simply by virtue of being on a list with other notable academics does not transfer notability to him automatically. It is up to the editor (you) to independently demonstrate his notability through reliable, third-party sources. I hope that helps. Cheers! Topher385 (talk) 05:21, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined

I have removed the speedy deletion tag you placed on List of mobile advertising networks. You tagged it under WP:CSD#A7, but A7 only applies to "a real person, individual animal(s), organization (e.g. band, club, company, etc., except schools),[4] or web content". As a list article, A7 doesn't apply. An article on any of those networks individual would fall under the organization restriction, but not a list of multiple companies. You are still welcome to take the article to AfD if you think that it doesn't meet our notability criteria for lists. Qwyrxian (talk) 13:10, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

RE: Dominion Tankard 2012 PROD Tag removal

I removed the PROD Tag because if you clearly read the tag, it states, if changed are made to improve the article the notice can be removed, and that is exactly what I did. I also do not appreciate you undoing the changes I did, removing all of the improvements that I spent time putting into the article. I would appreciate it if in the future you watch what you are doing before you carelessly act! Sirrussellott (talk) 03:32, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

A PROD tag should only be removed if the issues raised in the tag are addressed. This has clearly not been done as you only improved the structure of the article and not the actual content which is why I added the tag in the first place. Despite your improvements, the article still appears to fail WP:FUTURE. I hope that clears things up. Topher385 (talk) 09:44, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

And after reading WP:FUTURE the article does not fail, it is not a fluke event, it occurs every year and has done so since 1927. Although it is pretty bare, these events when usher in a lot of information, hence the need to have it ready before the event begins. These pages are created every year to document the provincial events and there has not been problems with creating them and keeping them active and updated. Akhadachandi Temple/Lokanatha Siva Temple/Arjunesvara Siva Temple

I've just accepted these three submissions at AfC, which you previously declined because they "seem[ed] to have a lot of text for only one source". I really don't mean to pick fights with fellow reviewers, but seriously – what kind of reason is that? While not perfect in terms of the presentation, the content of these articles—dry physical descriptions of ancient buildings—is about as unlikely to be challenged as it gets. You should have assumed good faith with regard to the source you weren't able to check personally (see WP:SOURCEACCESS).

I probably wouldn't have said anything, but this isn't the first time I've come across submissions previously declined by you for reasons that I thought were overly harsh. Please remember that the purpose of AfC is to help new users create articles, and not, however much it might seem like a game of whack-a-mole sometimes, solely to dispense reasons why their contributions aren't welcome. joe•roetc 10:56, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

I am sorry that you feel that I am overly harsh when reviewing articles. However, I generally will decline such articles to give the editor a chance to make their source list a bit more robust. There is some subjectivity in reviewing these articles, and I do the best that I can. I do not try to decline article just for the sake of declining them. All reviews I make are an attempt to help the editor make their article better before moving to the main space. I would hate to have an article pass through AfC only to be tagged as CSD or PROD once it gets there. I have seen this happen in the past much to the article creator's dismay and disappointment. I hope that clarifies my reasoning. Cheers! Topher385 (talk) 11:04, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Ad-Dunya (This World)

Hello Topher385. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Ad-Dunya (This World), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not a test page. Those are ones like "Testing... " or "Is this how to post an article?" or rows of the "Example" image. This is short and needs more references, but it's a valid article about an aspect of Islamic thought. There is good advice for speedy taggers at WP:10CSD and WP:A7M. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 19:07, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I disagree, and I have removed your PROD. Take it to AfD if you like, but a short search found this book on the subject, which i have added as a reference, and I will post a message at WP:WikiProject Islam to see what they think and whether they can add to the article. JohnCD (talk) 19:31, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the guidance. Although I have gotten better at it, CSD's and PROD's are the two things that I still can't quite get my head around entirely. Practice makes perfect, I suppose. Topher385 (talk) 21:37, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
No worries! New Page Patrol is an essential activity to keep the encyclopedia workable but, I know from my own experience, the floods of rubbish one has to deal with make it easy to get into a frame of mind where one's first thought is "How can we get rid of this?" rather than "Could this perhaps be improved?" One point about PRODs, picking up from something further up this page: although anyone removing a PROD is encouraged to improve the article and/or explain his reasons, that is not actually a requirement. A PROD template may be removed by anyone, even the article creator, for any reason or none; and once removed, may not be replaced - see WP:Proposed deletion. The idea is that PROD is a way to lighten the load at AfD by providing an alternative route for uncontroversial deletions; but if the PROD is removed, it is evidently not uncontroversial. You might think that makes PRODs useless because they will always be removed, but in fact that turns out not to be so: if the PROD reason is clearly stated, quite often it is not challenged. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:54, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi. I am Jivesh. I edit strictly Beyonce-related articles on Wikipedia. I was wondering if you could do a copy-edit of Run the World (Girls) for me? Waiting in anticipation. Reply me on my-talk-page please. Jivesh Talk2Me 10:14, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Maravilla (gangs)

Hey, I'm posting this to let you know that Maravilla (gangs), an article you participated in at AFC, has been nominated for deletion. What it looks like to me is after you denied his request for mainspacing, the editor edited the article enough times to be autoconfirmed, retagged it, and then moved it into mainspace himself before anybody at AFC could comment. The topic has been deleted thrice before under different titles Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 15:59, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out for this one in the future. Topher385 (talk) 01:03, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Da grande (film)

Hi, I would like to know why the proposed article has been declined. Reliable sources were cited (IMDb), and the film has received a publicly recognised award. Thanks. --151.83.187.3 (talk) 14:07, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, IMDb is not generally considered a reliable source of information, especially when establishing notability. I hope that helps clarify things for you. Cheers! Topher385 (talk) 20:39, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
I improved the article, and I added new references and sources. The film won an internationally recognised award (Nastro d'argento).--93.44.208.75 (talk) 18:17, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
I have checked the film out, and added some more reliable references. There is no doubt that a) the film exists b) Franco Amurri is a notable Italian director c) Da Grande notably inspired the film "Big". So I'd have thought this was a pretty clear accept, really? Hope this is ok for you. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:13, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE September 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation

We have had 55 people sign up for this drive so far, and 31 have participated. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! It's not too late to join the drive if you have not already done so. Another great way to help out is to watch-list the Coordinators talk page and participate in the ongoing development of the Guild.

Progress report

So far, we have reduced the backlog by 75 articles, or about 19% of our goal. We have also cleared January 2010 off of the queue and are close to clearing off February and March. If each participant were to copy edit two articles from February and March 2010, they would be completely eliminated from the queue.

Rollover words

Several concerns have been brought up this drive about the usage of rollover words. Rollover words only count if they're from the previous drive. For example, if you received 1,000 rollover words in March and didn't participate in May, your rollover words return to zero. This is to encourage participation in multiple consecutive drives.

That is enough to meet WP:Music guidelines, and the obscurity of the artist in hand with the apparent bias of the article's challengers is really the issue here.

As a participant at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common Dead, would you explain how you came to the conclusion that Common Dead fails WP:MUSIC? In other words, what was your opinion of the sources? This is essential to determine whether the article should be relisted or kept deleted. I am inclined to support relisting but am willing to be swayed if the "delete" votes did not consider the sources sufficient or reliable enough to establish notability. Private Q

Good day, fellow Wikipedia-user. I was browsing the Star Trek Project Page and stumbled upon your username written there - "gagman385". Now, I happen to have known a guy using this name on several occasions and wanted to ask you (I don't know if you want that stuff on you personal talk page, whether or not it is you) if you allow me to pose a rather personal question (I could mail it, if you prefer) - to ask you if you are in fact that guy I knew back in 2008/9. Ninjason (talk) 16:53, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Feel free to email me your question. Topher385 (talk) 19:56, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Umm... I'm sorry, I clicked the appreciation-button on your userpage, believing it would send you a mail with what I wrote - it posted it on your talkpage...
Usually there's a button on the left email this user but I can't find it. If you access your talkpage history, you can read it anyways, so it's not necessary to still mail it... Sorry for the mess. Ninjason (talk) 08:45, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Yep, that's me. :) Topher385 (talk) 13:10, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm a bit stunned now, I admit. Though - really - it had to be ^^ - well nice "seeing" you around. The internet world is quite small. Is there any chance of seeing you again or have you completely closed that chapter? Ninjason (talk) 14:15, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Topher 385,

I write to you because I have submitted a WIKI-draft for the association of Arctic Expedition Cruise operators. In your comments you told me that it seems more like an advertisment. I have looked it over, and have removed the passage: 'important' in 'AECO is an important stakeholder' -so that it now reads 'AECO is a stakeholder'.

I understand your comments in regard to the above (even though AECO IS an important stakeholder) - ... - and now after having reread the text I hope it is 'neutral/objective' enough. The important thing - for me to say in regard to AECO - is that it is not a company, and it's doesn't make a profit. But it's a member-organization, that I think belongs in an Enclyopedia, just as International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), AECO's sister organization.

If you are still not happy about my entry, please be specific about what you think should be changed. Then I will work on that.

Thanks in advance.

Ilja

Iljalang (talk) 09:04, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Just gave it another thought - is it because you want me to leave out the list of members. That would be easy to do (and also easier in terms of the entry not getting too outdated too fast) - I can remove the member-listing! Iljalang (talk) 06:23, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (Talk), Stfg (Talk), and Dank (talk)
