Biden image

Do you really think Image:Joe Biden, official photo portrait 2-cropped.jpg is a better representation than Image:JoeBidenOfficialCroppedv3.jpg of the source image at http://biden.senate.gov/press/gallery/photos/?id=9ab0db9e-a78b-4af9-9917-c450e5d7c30d? To me, the one you prefer has its color significantly washed out compared to the source. You're an admin, so I can't challenge your change, but I'm curious about your rationale. Slot Machines Issue

In years past, slot machine gambling has been a heated topic in the General Assembly – both houses in Maryland government. Proponents claim slots could help save Maryland's declining horse racing industry by placing the machines at race tracks, subsidizing racing purses, help fix a structural deficit and provide a new stream of revenue to fund other initiatives. O'Malley's predecessor, Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. (R) made slot machine gambling a priority from the beginning of his four-year term. However, associated legislation was not passed because of opposition mainly from the House and its leader Michael Busch (D).

As Mayor of Baltimore, O'Malley weighed in on the issue in a February 2005 Washington Post article where he remains open to "a reasonable compromise" that would place slots at race tracks but not make the state dependent on the revenue generated by the machines. O'Malley said he considers slots "a pretty morally bankrupt way" to fund education, which bills pending in both chambers of the Maryland General Assembly had called for.

O’Malley reversed his position as governor. In an official press release he stated that “As we continue to work with the Maryland General Assembly to reach consensus, I will introduce a slots proposal that keeps Maryland horse-racing competitive with surrounding states, preserves horse-related agriculture in Maryland, and invests in our shared priorities, like public education, school construction, higher education and community colleges.” Not only had his position changed regarding slots being a "morally bankrupt way" to fund education but so had his assertion that the state not be dependent on the revenue generated by the machines. Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown remarked in the same release that “Today’s announcement is another important piece of Governor O'Malley's comprehensive, long-term budget solution.”

In October 2007 O'Malley ordered the General Assembly into a special session to address a structural deficit. During the session O'Malley introduced a plan to allow up to 15,000 machines in five locations around the state. Because of previous opposition by legislators O’Malley’s plan allowed the voters to decide if slots machines should be legalized.

O'Malley was unwilling to risk taking a strong leadership stance on the issue as Governor Robert Ehrlich had, electing instead to use his influence from a distance. By late summer the global economy was experiencing a significant slow-down and Maryland suffered a $432 million revenue shortfall. O'Malley used the opportunity to infer that deep cuts to education and public safety, furlough of state workers and more tax increases were possible without the passage of slots to generate revenue. Slots opponents pointed out that even if slots were be legalized the revenue from the program would not be available to the state for several years, thus slots could not help solve the current fiscal crisis as O'Malley repeatedly claimed.

"Current" edits

Tom, as I looked at this edit of yours, I thought of two things. First of all, I was wrong at a factual level. Turns out that I got some bad info from the radio, and Janet was not sworn in on Tuesday as I had heard. But on a more significant level, I found myself disagreeing with you, albeit only slightly.

It is a major peeve of mine to read statements in our articles such as "Has been the heavyweight champ for two years," or even, "STS-117 has been in orbit for three days and 17 hours". I trust from your comment that you find these things equally annoying. But in some cases, I think that using the term "current" is perfectly acceptable. The article on Ms. Napolitano is such a case, methinks. When something is likely to be "current" for a significant length of time, such as her tenure at DHS, saying "current" is perfectly fine. Unlike the usage "for two years—", using "current" for a person holding such an office will remain accurate day in and day out until she is finally, in fact, no longer in office. And indeed, even then, for such a prominent personage, the likelihood of an inaccuracy arising from this usage is something approaching zero, because we are Wikipedia, not World Book, and if I hear on the TV that she has died or has resigned has been fired, the article will be corrected before I can boot up my computer.

Now I will acknowledge this: Even if it is acceptable to use "current", if the article can be written smoothly without using it, that might perhaps be best to do so. Indeed, the current version of the article, which says Janet Napolitano is the third United States Secretary of Homeland Security is superior both to my version and the one I changed, which read Janet Napolitano . . . has served as United States Secretary of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama since 2009. I'm sorry, but I disagree with this usage of "since 2009". When I read "since 2009", I have to check the calendar and check if it's 2010 already. Imagine going to work on Tuesday. There's an employee starting today in the cubicle next to yours. At lunch you mention to your old friends that there's a new guy working next to you. "How long has he been there?" they ask. "Since Tuesday", you say. Sounds pretty odd, doesn't it?

Anyway, no big deal, especially since someone's found a better way this time. I just think that "current" should not always be verboten. Cheers! Unschool 03:33, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Good Article review of Joseph Tydings

Hello - I have reviewed Joseph Tydings, which you listed at the Good Article nominees page. My review of the article can be found here. As you can see, I've raised quite a few issues with the article. Before you panic/become depressed/burn me in effigy, though, here are some things to bear in mind:

• The points I raise are not necessarily all things that need to be addressed before I list it as a GA. Instead, they are things that I think could improve the article. In my view, the actual GA status is of secondary importance in the GA process; what's more important is improving the article, and I think that goal is best served by making as many suggestions as possible.
• In my experience, I'm among the most stringent GA reviewers out there, especially in the "well-written" category, where I tend to review GA and FA candidates in essentially the same way. Again, I do this because I think it's best for the article; however, if you think the points I've raised are too nit-picky or minor and you'd rather not address them, I may be willing to promote the article without them all being addressed.
• The opinions I express in my GA reviews are just that - my opinions (I also express some things, like grammatical rules or the requirements of WP:V, that are not my opinions). If you disagree with any of my opinions, please say so; you don't need to convince me that you're right, just that your position is a reasonable one. Racial Scrubbing at Steele

On January 2, you made a comment on the relevant talk page about the way the "controversy" section on Steele was being censored by an editor with a conspicuous POV. There's been a new development here on the Michael S. Steele article. Not only is the racial context around his RNC election being erased, but as of today, the erasures are disguised as "m" (minor) edits. I don't know what to do next to prevent what I hope is innocent and well-meant but which has the same effect as vandalism and/or censorship to suit a POV. Brooklyn, Baltimore

Hello, I am not sure exactly who I would contact on this matter. I understand that there are far more productive editors in the wikipedia realm than I but I recently edited the Brooklyn, Baltimore page to state a more appropriate History of the area.

I am sure that no one will debate whether or not there are gangs in Brooklyn but it is certainly not a part of its History and the reference to the fact is not relevant. As wikepedia is a main tool for prospective home buyers, tourist, entrepreneurs, etc. I feel like it should actually have hard data on crime statistics and gang related statements. I then looked at the Baltimore wiki searching for a gang reference but could not find one.

I am not much of the editor as I do not understand html extensively but if you know the person who may edit the Brooklyn page or have the power to do it without it being changed I would greatly appreciate any help.

There is a short book online for free with a more detailed history of Brooklyn and a few resources for community activism that someone editing that page may care to look at. As far as crime data I am sure that everyone at wiki MD knows where to gather such information. UMD governors alumni

Hi, Tom. You removed a blurb about Harry Hughes from the University of Maryland, College Park article with the edit summary mentioning that many Maryland governors have been UMD alumni. I don't believe this to be the case; as far as I know, only Hughes and John Walter Smith were Maryland alums, while Parris Glendening served as faculty. The UMD Alumni hall of fame includes only Hughes. Perhaps you are thinking of University of Maryland, Baltimore, where many governors attended the UM Law School? Thanks for clarifying. Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

Regarding this edit, my first reaction was that the article is about Groves, not some senators' political opinions of how the census should be run, and that led me to thoughts of WP:COATRACK. But then I thought, well, it was his nomination for the job, so...maybe it's appropriate. So I've done nothing and instead I'm asking here...how strongly do you feel about the wording in that edit? I'm leaning ever-so-slightly toward "ACORN isn't relevant in his article", but I don't want to come off as being a POV pusher either... I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
