You're a sysop!

Hi, Steel359, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

Please also add you name to WP:LA =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:19, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Block of 68.109.250.194

I have no problem with the block of this IP (its a high school, so very little good will come from anonymous edits) but would it be possible to allow registered users to edit from that IP? I would like to be able to edit while at school, but if it not a capability of the wiki, thats cool. Gsham 02:07, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi there, Steel!

Thank you so much for supporting my RfA! It ended up passing and I'm rather humbled by the support (and a bit surprised that it was snowballed a day early!). Please let me know if I can help you out and I welcome any comments, questions, or advice you wish to share.

Sláinte!

P.S. Congratulations on your own successful RfA!

Please fix

Someone created EyeToy: Play 3 but screwed up the infobox. I'm guessing you will be able to fix it, and if it's insignificant I know I can rely on you to do the needful :-) Guy 08:49, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Vandal removal

Hi. You removed 219.118.172.113 from WP:AIV, as he had appeared to stop. He just did it again, and was reverted by Tawkerbot4. --Storkk 14:57, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Block user blanked warnings

I'm not sure how you'd deal with this, this user, whom you blocked, just blanked his warnings: User talk:64.107.53.2 . Antonrojo 15:28, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

It wasn't speedily deleted because no speedy deletion criteria apply to the article. I see that you have been an administrator for just 2 days. Please familiarize yourself more thoroughly with our Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion. And please read Wikipedia:Hoaxes to see why hoaxes are specifically not covered by the speedy deletion criteria. Uncle G 23:30, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Discussion taken to User talk:Uncle G. Summary: It was blindingly obvious this was never going to survive an AfD discussion. I would have speedied it on those grounds under WP:SNOW, Uncle G wouldn't have. -- Steel 10:37, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

you deleted the Prangstgrup hours after it was initiated it how can we collectively contribute in small pieces if this is will be the norm

Before nominating an article for speedy deletion, please consider whether an article could be improved or reduced to a stub. Also, please note that some Wikipedians create articles in multiple saves, so try to avoid deleting a page too soon after its initial creation. Users nominating a page for speedy deletion should specify which criteria the page meets; it would also be considerate to notify the original author — remember, everyone was new once.

Konstable's RfA thanks

Hi Steel359, thank you for supporting me in my RfA, which was closed as successful last Wednesday with a unanimous support of (47/0/0). I will do my best to help keep Wikipedia clean, green and vandal free. Once again, thank you! --Konstable 14:43, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Ann Coulter Protection

Steel, just before you got involved in protecting/unprotecting this article, there was THIS massive change (IMHO massive vandalism) by User:Carrionluggage. Is there some way to revert it? (This article is constantly vandalized by all sorts of nice people. Even minor changed tend to be discussed at length on the talk page.) Thank you for any assistance you can render. Lou Sander 15:11, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Ann Coulter oddity; Fano

I found that Mel Gibson on the Ann Coulter page was not linked, so I linked it. Next day that whole part is gone and you say you locked the page.

This kind of thing is why I gave up editing Wikipedia a few months ago - I returned only because there was a piece on Michael Hart calling him an astrophysicist, while his last work on that was 1982 and I checked his credentials to some degree. Somebody keeps taking out my changes there, too, so I suppose I give up on that one.

Now I have no idea what was supposedly wrong with connecting Ann Coulter to Mel Gibson - seemed there was useful information there. What's up? All I did was put double square brackets around Mel Gibson.

Your admin staff does some other damage. I put up a photo of famous physicist, the late Ugo_Fano on his page, and got permission from University of Chicago to post it on Wikipedia. I gave the name of my contact there and his phone number in the commentary and I believe on the talk page. Some "admin" took it down because I had not put a "Gnu" permission template on it. He said his main occupation as admin. is to take down photos and transfer them to his home computer. Now I don't know where to find the "Gnu permission" template and I don't have the time or energy to call U of Chicago again. Seems to me an admin could have made the call and put up the Gnu sticker, instead of moving the photo to his home computer. This kind of thing loses respect for Wikipedia. Carrionluggage 16:52, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Declining requests for page protection.

Hi, it would be useful if you could provide reasons on Wikipedia:Requests for page protection when you decline protection rather than just declining it. Thanks, 17:04, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

No specific ones, I just noticed a string of them on the page is all. Cheers, Localzuk (talk) 18:23, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Indeed, there does only appear to be one - I think I saw the ones below (accepted/unprotected) without and my mind must have played a trick on me. Cheers, Localzuk (talk) 18:40, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

My apologies

I had been under the impression that you had to be an administrator to add a test template to a vandal's talk page, but I am now aware that a normal user may do this as well.  Daniel_123  ►  23:04, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

136199 Eris

Why have you locked 136199 Eris so that it can't be moved? The move discussion was held, with all the normal formalities, and consensus was reached to move to Eris (dwarf planet). The move was done, and some people seem to be trying to move it back, but those moving it back, don't seem to be adding any further debate on the talk page. Nfitz 21:39, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

  • I'll look into this later when I have more time. One question, there seem to be quite a lot of opposes on the talk page. Doesn't look much like consensus. -- Steel 21:46, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
    • It was about 3:1 for moving it; and a lot of the opposes were on the basis that 136199 Eris should be used as it was the official name, rather than simply Eris (dwarf planet) (I think many would prefer Eris, but that is the disambiguation page) ... which seems to completely ignore Wikipedia guidelines about using common names. I suppose one could argue, that there was a bit of dissent, and perhaps the status quo is better - but the status quo was 2003 UB313, which virtually no one is arguing should be used. It was moved from 2003 UB313 to 136199 Eris just before the move discussion was started. Nfitz 21:59, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Talk:Dwarf_planet/Naming
Here we go. Ongoing discussion, no clear consensus yet. -- Steel 22:02, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Wow, I had no idea that debate was going on! Yikes, they are going to think themselves to death here ... Thanks, Nfitz 22:16, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Sprotect on Martin Luther

Helping out with the backlog

Hi there and congratulations on your brand new sysop flag. Now that you are an admin, you might want to help the community in a way you weren't able to before. The obvious example is clearing out the Category:Administrative backlog :-) You might want to start with Wikipedia:Requested moves which I find the easiest to deal with. If you have any questions, just drop me a note! Enjoy! :-) --Dijxtra 09:05, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Aham. Sorry. Should have checked first. Didn't think that new admins go to work right away... Way to go! :-) And, yes, requested moves aren't really that complicated. What you have to do is go to talk page of the article to be moved, check the survey out, if it is more than 60% support you move it, drop a note on the talk page that the request succeeded, remove the tag from the top of the page and remove the entry from WP:RQM. If it's more than 60% oppose, then just drop a note on the talk page that the request failed, remove the tag from the top of the page and remove the entry from WP:RQM. If you can't find the survey, survey is around 50%, nobody voted or you encounter any other problem, leave it alone, more expirienced admin will do that one. --Dijxtra 11:07, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, with those in the "backlog" section. BTW, I'm not pushing you, you don't have to do it if you don't want to ;-) It's just that I'm on a mission (from god ;-) ) of recruiting new admins to this boring backlog-clearing tasks, not that I chose you specifficaly ;-) --Dijxtra 11:19, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Blocked user back and spamming

Speaking for many of us in WikiProject Comics, I'd like to thank you for blocking User:24.60.85.190 on Sept. 17. And as of 10:07, 19 September 2006, he's immediately back making linkspam edits to the Marvel Comics References. Would it be possible to intervene again with this stubborn anon-IP? -- Tenebrae 19:22, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! --Tenebrae 19:48, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

User:24.60.85.190 again

Hi, Steel. (BTW, is your handle after the famous Twilight Zone episode?). Almost as soon as he returned from the block, [User:24.60.85.190]] is still adding linkspam, enough so that I've reported a 3RR vio here. I'm afraid I found the directions daunting, and I might have filled out the form incorrectly. Whatever the case, I wanted to let you and the other three editors working on this know about the 3RR request. As I said there, this anon-IP has become obstinate, seems dismissive of Wiki policies, isn't making worthwhile contributions, and only seems interested in advertising his blog. -- Tenebrae 13:58, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

I noticed that you reverted the linkspam posted by 66.24.207.239 in the Earth article. I want to draw your attention to the fact that posting this linkspam is the sum total of his contributions. I have been reverting his edits in at least two other articles this afternoon. It is about time he received a very stern warning. ---Charles 20:52, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you are correct. I did not think that warning would work. Thanks for keeping an eye on him. ---Charles 21:00, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Asgardian

I hate to bother you with something else, but WP:AIV didn't seem quite right for another issue, and I was hoping you could direct me to the proper forum. User:Asgardian continues to make trivial and often misspelled and grammatically poor edits to Thor (Marvel Comics) that other editors keep removing, to no avail. He won't work with the community, won't offer compromise solutions, and writes long, defensive diatrbies at Talk:Thor (Marvel Comics). It's not vandalism per se, I don't believe, but edits clearly against consensus. Any advice? -- Tenebrae 14:34, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Six-month block

Basically, I must have made a mistake and forgot to check against the AOL addresses.

Having said that, this site appears to have a long history of vandalising articles.

The irony is that as an unfortunate AOL user myself, I’m constantly having to remove indefinite autoblocks from myself.

The problem would be largely solved if Wikipedia would adopt simple measures such as no anons + 30 minutes wait before the first edit, but there seems to be little hope of it biting the bullet and making it anything other than a vandal’s playground.

Still, that doesn’t excuse my error, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa jimfbleak 06:05, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Admin coaching

Hello Steel. Yeah, talk to Petros, just tell him you're coaching someone. It looks like there's no one "in line" at the admin coaching project (not that you really have to constrain yourself to that anyway). As for coaching ideas, you can check out me and Firsfron's coaching page. Try to determine any weakness areas in policy understanding or contributions, make sure there are no civility problems, stuff like that. Basically just ask yourself if you would support that person's RfA, and if objections arise, address them. Let me know if I can help further. :) --Fang Aili talk 14:22, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Oh, to answer your question about shortening my name. Sometimes people will write "Fang", which is the family name and certainly acceptable. You could also say "Aili" which is the given name and a more familiar form of address. In China, people will often learn family names first, not the other way around, as is common in the Western world. And that is your history lesson for the day. :) --Fang Aili talk 18:48, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi there, I was just coming here to ask you if you ready for a trainee :) Does the above mean that you don't want one for now? If you've taken on coaching someone that's on the coaching waiting list already, can you please remove them from the list and add the relevant entry into the coaching box. If you're just doing it informally that's fine. Let me know if you have any questions etc. Cheers, Petros471 19:56, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Erechtheus 19:24, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Footmen Wars + Footmen Frenzy

Declined speedy. I put my explanation in the edit summary, namely that they are in the middle of an AfD and it is better to let that run its course, if for no other reason than an AfD decision to delete carries an authority beyond speedy. AfD also creates a more thorough investigation of the subject than a single person is likely to undertake, so it is fairer to the article creator(s). I hope you will agree with this reasoning. Tyrenius 22:47, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

If the speedy has been proposed before the AfDs started (or even before it got into full swing) then it wouldn't have been an issue, but there is an established editor arguing strongly for keeping them. It probably won't succeed, but AfDs can be turned round. The previous AfDs were a year and a half ago. Attitudes can change in that time also. This all argues for giving it a fair chance. Tyrenius 23:17, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

OK, let's see then... Tyrenius 23:22, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia as a Whole

Sure we can talk on here. Whatever you want to do. I just think that Wikipedia needs it's own talk page for wikipedia as a site, not just the page wikipedia. It may have been a month ago that my submission on a certain page was edited, but 1) I just now logged on to see it, and 2) being called a "vandal" for something like that is just frustrating. I mean, how would you like it if you accidently did something in real life and were called a criminal for it? Doesn't feel too good, eh? Now, that wasn't the greatest example ever, but I think you understand what I'm getting at. --Bkid 22:07, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

I do know what you mean. In fact, I had a discussion with someone earlier this evening about calling good faith {See WP:AGF) edits vandalism. Though to be honest the best way to go about it would have been to speak to the person who reverted it, rather than make a huge fuss on Talk:Wikipedia. -- Steel 22:14, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Well like I said, I'm sitting here half in a rage about being called a vandal, and making topics wherever I can, not realizing that the Talk page is for Wikipedia the page, not Wikipedia the site. --Bkid 22:17, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
I'd suggest not getting into a rage. I've been called a vandal before and I'm an admin. Oh, and the talk page thing isn't obvious for new people, you're not the first person to make a topic about Wikipedia in general there. General discussion usually takes place at the Village Pump. -- Steel 22:24, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, I left a message on the talk page of the person who removed my link (Ryulong), and I've also posted in the Talk Page of 4chan in an attempt to have 7chan mentioned in the article once again. --Bkid 22:31, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Missing Article: William E. Nelson

I see that you removed the ‘William E. Nelson’ article. I added images to the article because they were official government and institution letters endorsing William E. Nelson's environmental methods, and felt they were relevant to establishing who he is. I merely mean to inform and expand the article.

I understand that I placed the wrong copyright designation on some of the images, the problem I was faced with was that I could not find a single type of copyright that would fit the image. The images were letters mailed to William E. Nelson himself, and were therefore given to me with his permission.

Please help me to undelete that article, so I can make it acceptable. I worked on that article to give him a more legitimate wiki presence he deserves. He has been working for the environment for almost 50 years. I don't think the entire article deserves to be deleted, perhaps just the images I added until I find the right copyright designation. I am very new to wikipedia, and have still have some policy reading to do. Please help and understand my sincerity.

Thanks,

Dan

I'm sorry for that; I'll continue the 'discussion' with the vandal on my own page exclusively from now on. Is this acceptable? E. Sn0 =31337= 01:04, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

re the MGS3 Premium image

Never really thought about it before, I guess. I just did some WP:FUC #1 removals earlier today, and when I saw you change that, I realized that it was a prime #1 candidate. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 01:37, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Reality check

Hey, can you come over to Talk:Deus Ex#GA review and give me a reality check on this? It seems to me that I'm making a convincing argument that's falling on deaf ears, but I've felt like that before and realized afterward that I was batshit insane. Could I ask you to either pitch in and back me up or call my bullshit? - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 00:02, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
