Hutatma Chowk Image Copyright edit

please do not add the Hutatma chowk picture to mumbai. it is copyrighted. thanks Nikkul 18:32, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is no proof provided that this image is allowed onto Wikipedia. Without proof, we can not use this image. Also, the image has nothing to do with the text. Unlike your image, the VT image is under the creative commons license as shown on the flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/humayunnapeerzaada/381909286/in/set-72157594578374132/ Nikkul 15:22, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that you said on Nikkul's talkpage that you had got permission from the author to use this Hutatma chown image on wikipedia. Can you please add the relevant evidence of the permission on the image page, else it is likely to be deleted from all pages on wikipedia soon. Abecedare 20:02, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for getting the new image. If you could find a better image, that would be great. Still, im not going to delete this one, dont worry. Nikkul 20:24, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your request for the Maharashtra map edit

I have noted your request for the MH state map. Although i wish to release maps of all states, due to my limited time i have only done the smaller states till now. States such as MH, UP, MP requires considerable time due to the large no of districts and extensive road/rail network. I shall however make MH as the next release as and when i get the time. Mumbai Image edit

Since Flora Fountain was renamed Hutatma Chowk, directly because of the Samukyta Movement, I think its very appropriate. Also, the picture is of better visual quality and the memorial is shown. I have changed the text a little. Nikkul 13:04, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Spam in Mi Marathi edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Mi Marathi, by GlassFET (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Mi Marathi is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Mi Marathi, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 22:10, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sawai Gandharwa edit

Sir, could you please explain why you have been reverting the lead transileration of this article.?thanks.Dineshkannambadi 13:25, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thanks for your quick reply. I think having a Kannada and Marathi transileration for Sawai Gandharwa is fine. However, Panditji being popular in Maharashtra is not a reason for Marathi translieration in that page. Similarly, as an example, Sachin Tendulkar is popular in Karnataka too which does not mean a Kannada transileration for his page should be allowed. I hope you understand this. Please maintain both Kannada and Marathi for Sawaiji only.Dineshkannambadi 13:37, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sir, You have not understood the meaning of the lead transileration. If Panditji has made significant contribution to Marathi music, please provide that statement in the body of the page and provide a citation for it. Also do you have cited proof (from an article, newspapaer etc) that Sawaiji is a Marathi speaker?Dineshkannambadi 14:00, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello edit

I am opposed to the image of the Memorial because it meant more to the state of Maharashtra than it did to Mumbai. The movement took place because of the state. And the state was formed because of the movement. Mumbai was not involved in this at all except for the fact that the protesters happened to be in mumbai.

The population boom & construction boom image on the other hand shows how the city's demographics and its structure has changed since the 1970's and how this has made it the 5th most populous city in the world. My image is directly related to Mumbai while the Memorial image is indirectly related to the city. I think the hutatma chowk image would go better on the maharashtra page. cheers. Edit edit

I definetly disagree. The country is more important than the state. Most of the readers who come here dont know what maharashtra is, but they do know what india is. We can reword the intro, but i think that the first sentence should say something about its importance to the country since we need to establish the fact that the city is in India. Nikkul 12:49, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Geo edit

Trust me, the whole world does not know mumbai is in india...maybe 1 percent of the population knows that theres a city in this world called mumbai... a lot of people dont even know where india is, let alone mumbai. And if im the average reader, i would like to know which country the city is in before which state it is in. Living in the US, i can tell u that a lot of people dont know much about india. Nikkul 13:07, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was in India in August, which is when i took the pic. I still think that having the two sentences will make everything much more clearer. It is sad to say, but many people around the world would not know where india is on the map. That's why it is more important to point out that mumbai is in india. Furthermore, they would def. not know which country mumbai is in. Still, it is better to state the country and then the state. Nikkul 13:34, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thats exactly what im saying!...if someone doesnt know where india is, they def. wont know where mumbai is which is why we have to explain that mumbai is in india first. Anyway. i think the way that the other guy has it is good. (mumbai is the most populous city in india and the capital of maharashtra.) Nikkul 20:03, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sawai Gandharva edit

Sir, you had claimed that this singers name " Rambhau Kundgolkar" is a Marathi name. I have provided a very reliable website reference that his real name is "Kundgol Ramarao" which is no more Marathi then Kannada or Telugu. There are Rao's in all three states. Unless you can provid clear and present evidence that Sawai Gandharva is a Marathi speaker by descent, please dont add a Marathi transliteration. I have corrected the article information. After going thru many web sites, the impression I get is that because of his popularity in Maharashtra, people there may have given him a Marathi like name, just like many people in South India think Lata Mangeshkar is a Hindi speaker just because she is famous for singing Hindi songs. Not many people know she is a Marathi by descent. However I would be really pleased if you take the trouble to find real information that Sawai's language is indeed Marathi instead of just reverting all the time. The fun in Wikipedia is about finding information. I wish you all the best.Dineshkannambadi 03:30, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Rajya Marathi sanstha.PNG edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Rajya Marathi sanstha.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- ¿Amar៛Talk to me/My edits 10:03, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sir, please see some weird message pasted by someone in my talk page. Kerala govt logo is used in wikipedia but someone's objecting abt Maharashtra govt logos. What to do?? (Stateofart 09:22, 5 September 2007 (UTC)) the previous message was copied here from my talk page, to keep the converstaio at one place. Abecedare 14:07, 5 September 2007 (UTC) Reply

Stateofart, According to wikipedia policy on Non-free content criteria, images that are not free (i.e. not in public domain), cannot be used outside the mainspace (see point 9). So I'm afraid that Image:Maharashtraseal.png will have to be removed from {{Maharashtra}}, unless you can establish that legally the seal is in the public domain (which I doubt is true, but I haven't looked into Indian copyright law). Of course, this does not prevent fair use of the seal in articles such as Maharashtra.
If, as you say, Kerala seal is being used outseide the mainspace - such usage needs to be corrected too. I recommend that you post a question on WT:INB asking about the copyright status of state logos in India, but do not edit war over this. Cheers. Abecedare 13:13, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think there may be a technical solution to this n on-free-content problem. Perhaps we can add a "Logo" parameter to the {{Maharashtra}} template, and if the parameter is set to "yes" on the article page where the template is transcluded, the logo can be displayed. Can you look into how this can be implemented ? Perhaps it may be worth contacting User:Ganeshk who is our resident template expert. Cheers. Abecedare 14:07, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

RE:State logos in Templates edit

The logo does show on the Maharashtra article when you click the Show link at the bottom. The template does not need to show it too. The reader is going to see the Maharashtra article only.

The copyright policy at [1] is not clear. I checked with copyright gurus here. I was told it was not free-use. The part where it says, "This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not being used in a derogatory manner or in a misleading context." puts restrictions on reproduction. So, the logo is fair-use, and a fair-use rationale needs to be added for each article that uses that image.

Hope that explains. Let me know if you have questions. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 06:06, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please stop editing the name of Mumbai in the infobox. The primary name should be in English as this is the English wikipedia. Indic scripts still render poorly in several browsers, and we are hesistant to use it directly in maps. Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:11, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

With respect to your edits on Muhammad Ali Jinnah, please be mindful of WP:3RR. Always better to discuss changes on the talk page and come to an agreement with others, especially on a wiki. Mumbai name edit

Please stop adding the name of the city in Devanagiri to the Mumbai article infobox native name parameter. Discuss it first rather than making unilateral changes. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:57, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

The point is not if it renders or not. The point is to maintain consistency across all cities with appropriate consensus. This is the English wikipedia, and the text is normally meant to be in the body. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:33, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
"The template box is purposely designed the way which keeps native script and its english transliteration on map. More important is the accuracy and correctness of information rather than consensus. Unarguably native name and other name has been alloted the places in box and we should maintain that. We cant interchange them for the sake of convenience. Even if this is english wikipedia the importance of native names have been kept intact and in Mumbai's case there's no such problem as native name equals English name."
  1. The template box is purposely designed the way – No, it was not designed that way. The word native name was picked up from the country template
  2. accuracy and correctness of information rather than consensus – You're mistaken. The term "Mumbai" is pretty much accurate in English. We cannot compromise on accuracy, but there is nothing incorrect in having Mumbai in English in the infobox. Consensus is official policy on Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia:Consensus.

=Nichalp «Talk»= 15:44, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

One of the reasons why we keep the native name off the template is because in a lot of regions there are more than one native name. Mumbai may only have one state language, but other states have more than one. UP for example. Delhi for example is Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. We can't list all three languages, it would be messy, and lead to edit wats. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:55, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Rajya Marathi sanstha.PNG edit

Thank you for uploading File:Rajya Marathi sanstha.PNG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 13:09, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
