I have it downloaded ok - thank you very much again. I can't see where he does coin the term 'soziopath' in there, the nearest I see is 'antisoziale', so I'll have to see what's in the other one. I see his name is spelled Carl in this - not sure which is most correct in German or English

The citation given by Millon et al. (1998/2002) is in fact "Birnbaum, K (1909) Die psychopathischen verbrecker. Leipzig: Thieme." Others give the 2nd edition in 1914.

It seems that Scholarpedia has a misleading double in-line citation where in the references there is only "Birnbaum, C. (1909). Uber Psychopathische Personlichkeiten. Eine psychopathologische Studie. Grenzfragen des Nerven - und Seelenlebrens. Wiesbaden" - which is the one Doc Taxon has now provided - which does NOT appear to use the term. Sighola2 (talk) 12:38, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Some of those "Karls" spelled with "K" were written with "C" in some German and English publications of these years. But the fact is, that Karl Birnbaum is spelled by "K" since his birth. I don't know the reason of the wrong spelling of those names with "C". The other publication is coming soon, please wait some days. -- Doc Taxon (talk) 13:38, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Interesting...curiously I just stumbled across an article by Birnbaum's great grandson (apparently a student at Yale in 2007) about his copy of Karl Birnbaum: Leben und Werk (a 1982 dissertation by a German medical student who contacted him), which he says includes a photocopy of his "American naturalization certificate, made out to Carl (not Karl) Birnbaum, his “complete and true signature” looking strangely like my father’s"! It also appears that Karl Birnbaum had a developmentally disabled son which might help explain his relatively progressive views on psychopathy, though not sure how old he was at the time.[2] Sighola2 (talk) 05:54, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

In the meantime I'll just leave a note here: so this the 1926 edition of Die psychopathischen verbrecher. I've OCR'd the PDF into searchable text and it doesn't seem to use the term 'soziopath' either. He says soziologische a lot, and antisoziale, and e.g. 'psychopathischer Unsozíalit', but not soziopath* as far as I can see. So either he used the term in an earlier edition of Die psychopathiscene verbrecher but then stopped, or he did not coin the term. I will try to check. Sighola2 (talk) 18:51, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

That's kind of you to offer. I didn't necessarily want you to use more of your time over this, but I wanted to leave a note summarising things so far. For the record, the main citation seems to be to the 1909 version of Die psychopathischen verbrecher (which Scholarpedia confusingly appears to cite to the other 1909 book you obtained). That in turn seems to mainly come from this bit of this book by Millon et al. However their quote is actually "sociopath" - so it can't be a literal quote anyway as it's English not German spelling! Anyway, I am attempting to clarify off-Wiki. If you do want to check the 1909 or 1914 editions, by all means that would help, but perhaps it won't be necessary, I'm not sure. no, I have no problem with that, to find it out for you. In the 1914 edition of Die psychopathischen Verbrecher I couldn't find "Soziopath", too. But I couldn't find any earlier edition than 1914.
