Mega Drive article tweaks

Hey don't mention it . For lists of lists, a good rule of thumb is separate the items in the "sub-lists" with commas; then you separate the "sub-lists" with semi-colons. Basically like "X1, X2 and X3; Y1, Y2 and Y3; Z1, Z2 and Z3;" etc. For the rest of it I don't think it really matters (such as the plurals for the licensed self-contained Mega Drives) as long as you're consistent. The semi-colon can come in handy in other places as well, as it can be used to connect things which could be their own sentence but are connected enough that stringing them together is useful (such as my second sentence in this reply). If possible, try to avoid stringing too many things together with commas - use semi-colons instead or separate them into separate sentences. Anyway, glad to have helped . Sega 32X sourcing

Hello. I'd like to ask about your source you placed on List of Sega 32X games, and I especially want to get this straightened out quick because it's at FLC. It's pretty rare that IGN is refuted, especially since it is considered a reliable source per WP:VG/S. Do you have a scan of this magazine article? I'd like to see what you have, because I have never seen anything that says the Sega 32X sold more than 200,000 units. That's part of why it was a commercial failure, and every reliable source I have ever seen points to 200,000 being the number. Haha, kind of funny. Nothing insulting, but oddly coincidental: I just realized that we've actually had this discussion before, although if I may be honest I was completely inactive from mid-2008 to that point in 2010, then from after that in 2010 all the way to a couple of weeks ago. Also kind of funny to see the discussion continued after I dropped off the face of Wikipedia again. Unfortunately, I don't know if those numbers will ever not be disputed for the Genesis, 32X, or Sega CD, since Sega never released their actual sales figures. I would think it would stand to reason that the Man!ac article includes all of the 32X units after the inventory was cleared at $19.95, but given that it's a May 1995 article, I think that's actually a little too soon for it to have that, especially as 32X games were released through 1995. I've been reviewing Kent's book, The Ultimate History of Video Games, but that does not provide a sales figure, either (all it says is that the 32X did not sell well and then it mentions all of the price cuts). The IGN article is much more recent and I will admit I'm inclined to believe it a little more given that it is more recent and from a reliable source per the Video games WikiProject sources page. That being said, I don't want to completely shoot this down without being able to see this magazine article and read it; especially as I'm considering working on Sega 32X next if this passes FLC and Sega v. Accolade passes GAN. I keep wondering if the number on 665,000 units is the shipment number and not the sales number, because as I read Kent's book, it does say that retailers did have high demands for the 32X, but the public didn't bite (something that regardless we do know now it was a commercial failure). Unfortunately, the sales number links on the Sega 32X article from Business Wire are now broken; I get redirected when I click on them. They cover that in there too. Just like IGN, the more "recent" news site, that said 29 million worldwide and 14 million north america, despite the New York Times, despite Business Wire, both of which IGN should have been able to do their homework on at the time. Here. If you want to go by shipment numbers, weren't one million 32X units shipped? There were one million orders placed. Aren't there multiple sources that state that? A Google search gives me a couple sources saying 400,000 sold by the end of 1994. One says 400,000-600,000. IGN just copied a GamePro article. It's a shame I think we'll never know the real number; I'm not even sure Sega knows all of them for sure. Regardless, it's nice to have the full scan in higher resolution that's actually legible since there's next to no way to get a hold of the magazine itself. I put some of it through Google translator, it's an interesting read. For now, though, we'll go with it because I don't see why it wouldn't be a reliable source, just as IGN is (and also, if IGN just copied a GamePro article, GamePro is also considered reliable per WP:VG/S), but that being said, we've seen this already with the Genesis debates too. There's just no consistency with it, anywhere, but given that Maniac provides their sources, I would be more inclined to use it at the moment. I still can't access anything through Business Wire for whatever reason, and shipment numbers don't really apply. I guess I kind of see this going a couple of different ways in the future, likely with sources running the gambit of numbers and a range of possible figures (WP:VNT anyone?), but we'll go with Maniac for now. I have updated the article title to "Videospiel-Algebra", the actual article title in the magazine, which is more appropriate for sourcing. What I see for consistency is, pre 1995 numbers state 400,000 shipped at launch, Business Wire states 500,000 sold by the end of the year, and then Man!ac's May issue states 665,000. We know from sources that the 32X sells out at launch, and that orders were for one million units. This is likely how many were manufactured, and why the system isn't rare by any means. We'll likely never be able to view the Business Wire articles again - same with Video Business. But they were always specifically cited as sales numbers in those articles, not shipment numbers (I'm sure there are at least a couple other editors who would attest to that as well. What's truly unfortunate is I had BusinessWire and VideoBusiness articles for all the Super NES sales apart from 1993, and those are all gone and no one saw them except myself because I was waiting to find 1993's numbers before adding them to the article - I only took down the numbers and links, so the article names and dates are missing). They're also still viable sources with citenews, I just have been too busy / burnt out with Wikipedia to update them to use that notation. I also need to go through the Mega Drive article and change all the references to use Publisher= instead of Work=.--SexyKick 11:19, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

I think I've just found a little more backup for these numbers. Check out this Allgame description, and bear in mind Allgame is also considered reliable per WP:VG/S. That overview does indicate the high shipping demand for the 32X at launch, and how Sega had 600k shipped by January 1995. We know it wasn't officially dropped until early 1996; which, while not necessarily a sign of sales figures, is certainly quite indicative that the Man!ac article is on the right track. Hi SexyKick. I appreciate you standing up for me in Talk:Sega Genesis. By now you've probably noticed I haven't ACTUALLY left the debate, despite threatening to do so. Just wanted to drop you a quick note as to why, in case you were curious:

It's because the response that 85.211 gave me when I "gave up" told me everything I needed to know: That he's patient, and he's willing to keep arguing the same stubborn argument until everyone who opposes him gives up and leaves. Once that happens, there'll be nobody left to dispute him, and thus a "consensus" will finally form in his favor. It wouldn't be the first time that tactic has been used in this cesspit of a dispute.

I know it sounds anti-AGF of me, but frankly this whole thing has gone really far beyond the point of reason.

My thoughts are that he came in initially telling people "What part of that do you not grasp?" on the 28th of May. So, maybe he hasn't been totally hostile, but that start and his tone since has made me feel that he's had this vibe around him. He is the "repeat the argument until they get tired" type. Replying to nearly every single reply and saying everything he can to keep things at a fever. I feel like he's looking for cracks in the ground, rather than doors in the wall. The 2011 discussion really burnt me out. There are 2012 AtGames Sega consoles I want to fit in to the article in some way, even if it's just a sentence like "these systems were updated in 2012"[citation] - but I'm even too burnt out for that. Fact is, it's easy to argue on a talk page - especially if you can detach the emotion that causes frustration. I need to change citeweb to citenews on the Business Wire articles, and work= to publisher= ...I think about this stuff, but I get tired just thinking about it.--SexyKick 06:33, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

(nod) The thing that gets me is that these people really do seem to think it's of such monumental importance that the article can never be improved in any way unless they get their way on its title. This is the only article I know of across all of Wikipedia (I'm sure there are others - I'm just not aware of them) that has this problem. And so far, nobody's given me a straight answer about why it's JUST this console and doesn't apply to other consoles as well, such as the NES or TG-16 (which arguably should be even more embroiled in this debate, since it was both more commonly known AND more successful outside of NA as the PC Engine). Why pick on this console in particular?

On quoting my comment about "Sega Genesis" vs. "Genesis" from 2011, and suggesting wording for the lead? I did see that and actually replied - I had just implemented kinda the opposite wording in the lead before I saw that, so based on my 2011 comment (which I'd forgotten about), I reversed the lead parts to match. Sega Genesis

Hey, SexyKick. I found an interesting stat: you're the number one contributor to the Sega Genesis article, and I'm the second (though I haven't majorly edited the page since 2008). I've just about finished both Sega 32X and Sega CD and both are up for GA nominations (not to mention Sega v. Accolade at FAC), meaning both of the major add-ons for the system are now in very good shape, and the Genesis' most important court case is soon to be featured since it currently carries three supports and no oppositions. Looking ahead with all of this effort put in, I've been reconsidering the main article and wondering if I might be able to help you rebuild this article and perhaps earn the GA status that it once had. Granted, I'm not always available due to my work schedule, but I think I should be able to help you out in improving coverage on the Sega Genesis, if you'd like a partner to collaborate with, and maybe even further if you're up for it.

Here are what I'd consider the articles of the "Sega Genesis" series if we want to try and make a featured topic (all articles at least GA, FA, or FL) out of this together:

• Sega Genesis
• Variations of the Mega Drive
• Sega CD
• Sega 32X
• Sega Nomad (I should note I tried to merge this away a few years ago)
• List of Sega Mega Drive games - probably needs to be moved to Genesis
• List of Japanese Sega Mega Drive games - ^ merge into above
• List of Sega CD games
• List of Sega 32X games
• Sega v. Accolade
• Sega Channel - perhaps Sega Net Work System gets merged in.
• Sega Virtua Processor - merge into Sega Genesis?

If you're interested in any collaboration on part or all of it, let me know. We can use WP:SEGA as workspace to coordinate all of the changes; the Sega task force died years ago and I'm sort of the only real remaining member and the task force's caretaker at this point. I thought you might be interested since you've put so much effort into the Genesis article and really kept it up very well. I'll try to help. I've been really busy with other projects, and apart from replacing dead references, I don't know what to do to improve the main article. I'll see what I can do. I have some fantastic reliable source references that might be able to help. Steven L. Kent's The Ultimate History of Video Games is a great reliable source that I have an ebook of. IGN has an 11-page history of Sega, and Allgame is always helpful. In my eyes, I'd say these things should happen with the article and would be good starting points: 1. Add-ons section should be updated to use GA-quality material instead of just the leads from the list articles, 2. Emulation section likely needs a trim, 3. WP:OR needs to come out of the Tech specs, perhaps a trim there might help too, and 4. Legacy and Revival really needs to get turned around into a Reception section, but certainly with the elements of the console's legacy. I think there might also need to be a little more on its initial development, too, i.e. the end of the Master System era and reasons for proceeding to the Genesis. Kent's book can really help with that. It's in pretty good shape as it is (and trust me, it's a lot better than my old GA version which utilized unreliable sources that were to Wikipedia's standard at the time but not anymore.) I do agree, I think the merges need to get tackled first. If I could, I'd love to find a way to also merge in the Variations article; it's long, but it's so full of unsourced garbage that it has to get redone at some point. Genesis Lead

Per FAC, I have begun a complete overhaul of the lead at User:Indrian/sandbox by blending elements of both the current lead and Red Phoenix's version with a few additions of my own. I have now finished my first pass at a new lead, which can be found at the link above. I want to emphasize that this is a rough draft version and I myself do not consider it ready for deployment. It is far enough along though, that I think it best to garner feedback from other interested editors. It addresses some of the concerns raised at FAC about length and technical details while providing at least a sentence or two of coverage regarding every major section of the article. I know User:Red Phoenix prefers fewer paragraphs in a lead, but all five in this version are fairly short, so it mostly moves along. Certainly open to finding ways to trim and consolidate though. I can't top the current picture, the seller lost one of the scopes. I did try T2, and you really can feel the accuracy in that, as well as the Menacer six pack with the accusight option. I actually enjoy Ready Aim Tomatoes and Corpse Killer more than T2. Pest Control is also no where near as bad as they make it out to be, same with Front Line. Both are just as good as Space Defender, but...still I agree the non-tomatoes titles are all quite lame. Not worth playing more than 10 levels in any. You should check out the music in the game though. Unfortunately, it's the music in nearly all the games apart from Ready Aim Tomatoes, so even though it's got a really good beat, you've had your fill after you're done with the cart. I think T2 just bores me to death with the third level. I'd just it more if I could get past that every time, every try. Using the Menacer to shoot rockets at Terminators and stuff *is* really satisfying though. Heck, holding the gun itself is super satisfying.--SexyKick 04:11, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

I feel I should point out the SNES version of T2 is waaaay better, and not just in graphics and sound, but gameplay too. And you can play it with the mouse. For some reason the Super Scope puts the game into a mode where the colors and graphics are worse, worse graphics than Genesis version at that point. (ick)

Kinda silly to notice this, but, the Sega Genesis version of the vanilla Terminator 2 is better than the SNES one. Sega got the better version of the crappy game. Haha.--SexyKick 04:23, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Haha, not me. Not anytime soon at least. Those pictures remind me though, the dual scopes are actually really useful...not for looking through both at once, but because the iron sight can line up to either scope, on either side. So effectively the Menacer works for left and right handed users just as effectively - unlike the Super Scope. I'm not sure if I read that in any of the Menacer sources. : (--SexyKick 04:37, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

They're only as useful as the Super Scope's scope. I can't imagine how using both at once (which I can't since only having one) would be useful at all. That just seems dumb. The manual sight in front of the scopes can be moved to either scope, or in the middle. I might get another one at some point just for the kick of testing that out. I do think it's easier to just play without looking through the scope, with both guns. But accuracy wise, it's just fine.--SexyKick 05:51, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

There's something called a "Manual of Style" that dictates when png and jpeg's should be used. It used to be that all console info box main pics were PNG's. Then it got changed to jpeg's. I don't know exactly why, and atm I don't really know where the manual of style is. Though you can find it by searching around for it or asking someone currently more involved with Wikipedia.--SexyKick 00:37, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

Well, that's a tad annoying. It's incredibly difficult to make transparent images out of low-quality jpgs. I'm not sure why we can't use high quality pngs! There's no reason not to, considering the images are free and there's a wikimedia-wide common sense agreement that white backgrounds are ugly; there's even a policy on wikimedia that encourages the removal of white backgrounds in favour of transparent ones! Game Library of Genesis

So I've been thinking of making the 3rd party stuff its own paragraph. The SF2 stuff will stay, there will be talks about RA and sources to Kalinske/Miller talking about how profitable the Genesis was for EA, and more insight to Mortal Kombat with a quote from Ed Boon where he says the original game played better.

Also, I'm looking at the paragraph I erased and I didn't see anything on Michael Jackson or UK advertising. Perhaps it was already removed?FightersMegamix (talk) 06:00, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Please just reply on the Sega Genesis discussion page, I don't need an extra reply here. Those things that you don't see, yes, they were already removed during the FAC review.
