Portal:Featured portals

edit

Any reason why the featured portals listing exist at Portal:Featured portals rather than at Wikipedia:Featured portals, where it is meant to be? All the other featured content pages are listed in the Wikipedia: namespace, and just because this one lists portals doesn't mean it itself should be in the Portal: namespace. If you have any reasoning for your page move, I'd like to hear them, before I consider moving the page back to its original, and IMO better title. Cheers, Spebi 03:05, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

WebML

edit

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article WebML, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [Show] and [Hide] in templates

edit

Hi. I asked at the Help Desk if there is a way I can make all the templates with a [Show] or [Hide] tag automatically be set so they are automatically/permanently showing? I tried looking in the prefs, but didn't notice it.

TheDJ suggested I contact you, that since you created the code, you might also have a workaround that I could put in my monobook.js perhaps. Thanks -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 06:28, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's sourced

edit

Dear editor Ruud Koot, there should should be a clarification as to who most of these non-Arabs were, the sentence you are removing is sourced and has been on the article for as long as I remember, so please do not remove it without a consensus. Besides re-adding the sourced sentence, I did not undo any of your changes.--CreazySuit (talk) 22:13, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for taking the time to answer. A compromise rewording might be worthwhile, which would reflect the fact that most of these non-Arabs were Persians in a shorter and more neutral manner. Do you have any suggestions? --CreazySuit (talk) 18:09, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

help with :ta:MediaWiki:Common.js

edit

Dear Ruud Koot, I am an administrator at Tamil Wikipedia (http://ta.wikipedia.org). When I wanted to update ta:MediaWiki:Common.js I found a section of code called "Tooltips and access keys" maintained by you and othe two users. However I did not find the same section of code it in the English version of the Common.js. Is this code not compusury or it is already taken into mediawiki itself? Shed me some light on this matter please. --Terrance (talk) 02:48, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ruud seems to be on vacation lately, so I'll answer this one. This code is outdated and should simply be removed. The tooltips and accesskeys are now defined by MediaWiki system messages. Look at MediaWiki:Sidebar, for example for "Main Page" item you see the word "mainpage", this means that tooltip is expected to be at MediaWiki:Tooltip-n-mainpage and accesskey (if needed) is expected to be at MediaWiki:Accesskey-n-mainpage. If you care about other languages, also create corresponding subpages like MediaWiki:Tooltip-n-mainpage/en. —AlexSm 03:39, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fitna Disambig

edit

Come on - regardless of what he thinks the "official" website is, the page on Wikipedia that actually discusses the movie "Fitna" should be the only page containing this warning. No? Alg8662 (talk) 02:52, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

But then it wouldn't make any sense to people just searching for the word "fitna" (rather than the movie) itself on wikipedia. ? Alg8662 (talk) 02:57, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Fitna (film)

edit

I not only protected based on the ip vandalism and unsourced additions [1] [2], but also the heavy vandalism by new accounts [3] [4] [5] as well as a slew of other unhelpful edits (that were not vandalism, but still stuff that needed to be reverted), All made within the hour or so prior to protection, not to mention hundreds of edits directly before that that I didn't feel the need to review because obviously the page was about a current movie release and the chaos on that page needed to be calmed down IMO. I see you went ahead and un-protected anyway, though. VegaDark (talk) 14:34, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think you should re-instate the semi-protection...the article is being hit by anonymous POV-pushers again. Given the high press visibility, a little higher degree of control is necessary. In addition, the vandalism and commentary are interfering with the good editors trying to keep up on a current event. Kelly hi! 18:39, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, since I probably won't be watching the article myself for a while I've reprotected it. —Ruud 19:22, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ruud, I have a related favor to ask - I'm concerned that our image on Geert Wilders (Image:Geert Wilders.jpg) may not be free. It comes from here, and that page seems to mention that it was provided by Wilders' office. It mentions both GFDL and public domain licensing, but I don't see any OTRS link or other verification of the license. Would you mind looking at the image and image talk pages to see if the license can be straightened out and the image moved to the Commons? Kelly hi! 19:59, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ruud, thanks so much for checking into it...I wasn't sure if you were online anymore, so I checked with an admin at Commons...he thought the permission was not sufficient, and the image is up for deletion here. In the meantime, I replaced the photo on Geert Wilders with one that is more likely to have a free license. Thanks again! Kelly hi! 22:30, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image:Shallow water waves.gif

edit

I just noticed that Image:Shallow water waves.gif, which you uploaded, is a Featured Picture. However, I think the image description page is woefully inadequate. What is the forcing term? Boundary conditions? It doesn't list any details of the numerical computation (method, resolution). I'm also not sure what the exact equations being solved are; what are the equations "linearized" about?

Is there any hope that the description is expanded (I understand somebody else actually ran the simulation)? -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 12:19, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jitse, I only moved the image to Commons so I'm afraid I can't answer any of those questions. Sorry, —Ruud 18:34, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

TIMTOWDI Deletion

edit

In random wanderings I noticed you'd deleted this. I wonder if it should be re-created, but as a link to There is more than one way to do it? There is already a re-direct to this page for the corrupted TMTOWTDI version. This seems a bit on the inconsistent side. I've no idea what the deleted version was, a duplicate of the There is more than one way to do it article should certainly not be there, but a re-direct seems to make sense - especially since the acronymn seems the more likely search. --BrucePodger (talk) 18:53, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually I've just realised the deleted version is not the accurate one either. The accurate one is there. Maybe both inaccurate versions should go? --BrucePodger (talk) 18:58, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Fitna-wikipedia.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Fitna-wikipedia.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. NotifyBot (talk) 14:48, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image permission problem with Image:Jamshid al-Kashi (stamp 1).jpg

edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Jamshid al-Kashi (stamp 1).jpg. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ChrisiPK (talk) 18:38, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I administer another wiki, and we tried to copy the templates Template:Navbox and Template:Tnavbar for use in creating collapsible navigation boxes. But we must be missing something, because we can't get the boxes to collapse when stacked, or even to collapse when we specify a "collapsed" state. We tried copying everything that looked relevant from MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Common.js, but those boxes still won't collapse. What might we have missed?--Temlakos (talk) 19:07, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

PS: Here is the link to our wiki: CreationWiki.

We're up to MediaWiki version 1.12. Does your collapsible navbox work only in MediaWiki 1.13? I wouldn't think that that was a problem; I was under the impression that you've had collapsible navboxes for more than a year.

You can also see <http://creationwiki.org/Special:Version> to see what extensions we're running.--Temlakos (talk) 03:19, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Problem solved!

edit

Thank you very much for your solution to our collapsible-navbox problem.

As you suggested, I copied in the hasClass function from MediaWiki:Common.js. And the boxes now collapse as they should. Best of all, semantic annotations remain intact even when the box is not showing.

You should get another "Barnstar" for today's work.--Temlakos (talk) 18:47, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Computer science

edit

Hi Ruud, There is (yet another) attempt to mess around with the lead sentence of Computer science going on at the moment. Feel free to make your opinion known on the talk page if you have the energy for another round of this debate.

P.S. Merry Christmas!
