Speedy deletion nomination of Candy Jar Ltd

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Candy Jar Ltd requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. PKT(alk) 14:32, 20 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Writing articles
Miscellaneous
I see that at Talk:Candy Jar Ltd you wrote "surely there are enough references to other Wikipedia pages in the Candy Jar Ltd page that make an article on the company itself relevant?" However, I'm afraid no number of references to other Wikipedia pages show notability, because Wikipedia is not a reliable source. (Anyone can edit Wikipedia and add any crap they like, and I'm afraid many people do just that.) Also, most of the other Wikipedia articles linked don't mention Candy Jar Ltd, and those that do barely mention it; for example, Kangazang! merely tells us that the company published a book, which anyone can do, and is no guarantee of notability, and Colin Baker merely tells us that a book that Colin Baker narrated happened to be published by Candy Jar Ltd. I am giving you, above, a more extensive welcome message than the one posted by PKT at the top of the page. It has links to many potentially useful pages. However, don't try to read them all before you start, as there are far too many, just pick out the ones which seem most relevant to your needs, and come back to others later if and when they become relevant. The guidelines on notability and reliable sources are certainly relevant to the issues that have been raised with respect to your editing, and perhaps the page about creating your first article. The guideline on citing sources is also relevant, but I do not recommend reading it at this stage. It makes the whole business of citing sources seem far more complicated than it needs to be. For now, at the point in the article where you want to cite a source just write <ref>, and then the name and author of the book you are citing, or the URL of the web page, or whatever, and then </ref>, and near the bottom of the page put a heading "References" and put the tag {{Reflist}} under it. If you stay and do lots more Wikipedia editing, then maybe one day you will find it helpful to read the guideline on citing sources to find out lots more details about fancier ways of doing it, but for now that is enough.
Having said all that, I think it is only fair to warn you that I have done a quick web search, and my impression is that the subject probably does not satisfy Wikipedia's notability guidelines. If it doesn't, then any work you put into the article is, I'm afraid, likely to be wasted, as the article will probably be deleted no matter what you do to it. As I said, this is an impression based on a rather quick search, and you may be able to find reliable sources proving that I am wrong, but that is the way it looks to me.
I don't know what your attitude to editing Wikipedia is. It may be that you have come here just to write about the business you work for and have no interest in doing anything else here, or maybe you just like the idea of contributing to Wikipedia, and Candy Jar Ltd just happened to be the first subject you picked. If you are here just to promote your business, you may be better off looking for somewhere else to do it, rather than Wikipedia. If, on the other hand, you are interested in contributing in other ways, then my advice is to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than writing new articles. That way, you will gradually learn how Wikipedia works, and any mistakes you make will be small ones, so you won't lose lots of work. After a while you will have learnt enough about what is accepted on Wikipedia, and you will then be able to write new articles without the likelihood of everything you do being deleted.
Finally, please do feel welcome to contact me on my talk page if you have any questions. JamesBWatson (talk) 20:43, 20 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
James has given you his usual wise advice. There's technically enough there now to indicate some possible importance, so I changed the tag to a Proposed deletion, which will give you 7 days to improve it if you can. As he says, what is absolutely needed is references providing substantial coverage from 3rd party independent published reliable sources, print or online, but not blogs or press releases, or material derived from press releases. If you do not have them , then the article cannot presently meet our standards; you can facilitate matters by placing at the top a line reading : {{db-author}}, and it will be quickly deleted.. When you have the necessary material, but not until then, try again, adding the reliable outside references at the very first edit. DGG ( talk ) 21:32, 20 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you both for all this information - it's very helpful! Will try my best to get this article sorted within the next week - it's been an interesting learning curve and I'll try my best not to make the same mistakes again! --Rosieloves789 (talk) 13:28, 21 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have found some references which I hope address the issues you have raised. If the article is still unsuitable, I would appreciate any help you can give me to make it better! I removed the deletion notice from the top because it said I could once I attempted to improve the article; I apologise if this was the wrong thing to do. I looked at Wikipedia pages that exist for similar topics (i.e other small independent publishing companies) and noticed that many have no external references but seem to be acceptable. I was wondering what made something notable enough that it would not require external references?--Rosieloves789 (talk) 16:30, 22 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
