Thanks for doing the discography, which I was going to get round to. But I'm pretty sure that the image won't be allowed, and I'm afraid I hate what you've done to the structure and format, so I'll change it back to be more in line with the 400+ other articles I've started. Policy Question

[1] Hi TPH, I was just reviewing the history of the Dollyrots page and I noticed that on September 17, 2010 (14:55) you reverted a backlink to a CSI episode. Your summary comment was Removing backlinks to Stuck On You (CSI: NY) because ""; using TW. My question is, why did you delete the link? I assume there's a policy, but I'm not aware of it. Free use files

When you have a free-use image, you do need to show proof of that just as you provide a rationale (FUR) for a non-free (fair use) file. The free use tags are here: Wikipedia:File copyright tags/Free licenses. I recently uploaded this free use file: File:Mitchell ayres.jpg, and you can see what went into the proof that it's a free use one. If you don't have any type of license on a file, It's going to get tagged for not having any, so please do license whatever you upload, and if you're not sure what kind of license the file should have--free or non-free, please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Hi, thanks for the reply, but I think you misunderstood my question. I do know that a FUR needs to be supplied, I was actually asking about the "image_has_rationale=yes" tag that you've been adding to my pics [2] My question is, should I add that tag myself when I add a pic, or is it there to indicate that someone else has validated that the FUR has been provided? WU LYF

Nice work putting the article into usable form. Your version correctly emphasises the reason this band is notable -- their deliberate public relations campaign to stay out of the public eye. All the average reader who is unfamiliar with the group -- like me -- needs to know is what kind of music they play. Thank you. It is an interesting strategy for a band to adopt. However, I think it's one which is likely to set people up for a disappointment though, if their music doesn't live up to the hype (or lack thereof, depending on how you look at it). Btw, if you want to hear what they sound like now, check out the Said the Gramophone blog entry on them here. I hadn't the chance to listen to any of their tracks until a few minutes ago. I think your judgment, "interesting but not earth shattering", is spot on. RE: Brian Jackson

The issue was that it was another IP editor making an unexplained genre change after being warned multiple times (User talk:86.144.71.100). Also, that article, along with those associated with Scott-Heron and Jackson (album, song articles) have been vandalized similarly by possible IP socks, making the same exact genre change, going away for a while after being warned, and after a period of time different IP accounts coming back and making the same genre change. That user's contributions mirror those of other IPs, such as 109.152.112.86, Special:Contributions/109.155.13.208, Special:Contributions/86.169.134.107. Dan56 (talk) 01:32, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Bearcat, good catch on the correct spelling of "Crème de la Crème", that is indeed how it's listed on the CD cover. I originally cut and pasted the track list from Amazon, where it's incorrectly spelled as "Créme de la Créme". iTunes has the same incorrect spelling. Robman94 (talk) 22:47, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Well, for what it's worth, I hadn't actually seen the CD cover yet (didn't even know the album existed until I saw the article, because embarrassingly I haven't actually paid much attention to his last few albums) — but I'm familiar enough with French spelling to know that the word crème has an è in it instead of an é :-) Bearcat (talk) 00:26, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Right, but just because that's how it should be spelled doesn't mean that's how the artist spelled it, as they are known to use their "artistic license" to change things like that. When I saw your change, I double checked at Amazon and then iTunes and I was thinking I should revert it, but then I went to my car to check the CD sleeve and sure enough, Peter used the correct letter and Amazon/iTunes got it wrong. If you got put off by albums like Dust then it might be time to come back, as Ninth is a return to form. Amazon is streaming the album here. He's also a lot more comfortable with the Bauhaus legacy now, so you might also want to check him out in concert if you get the chance. It's not that they put me off, so much as they passed right by without my even knowing that they existed. In my defense, the radio stations I was listening to at the time weren't playing him and the whole MP3-blog thing hadn't really taken off yet — and he was one of the artists who just kind of fell off my radar for a while because I just wasn't finding out about it when he had a new album. To be honest, I lost track of him for a while after the Deep album, and I lost track of all music pretty much over the last 10 years (raising a family, etc) but after I recently got back into going to gigs, I saw him play in Chicago where he previewed the album, so I was pumped to buy it the day it came out. A problem with the collapsed section in the Korean Pop AfD

The first 'keep' was from Standage and it was part of another 4-paragraph rant, with no policy related discussion. The second was from an IP who has made no other edits and also didn't quote any policies. So, based on that, how much do you think I should move out of the collapse box? As a "stop gap", I have copied the two votes and credited them to the posters, but have not copied any of the text. If you go back and read the text, I think you'll see why. Any chance that you'll be back by your real PC soon, though I know it's getting late in Croydon (still planty of daylight left here in Chicago!) Another IP has jumped into the fray and is likening this "cover up" to something Sarah Palin would do! :) Just FYI, I know that Standage also uses the 208.120.138.181 IP address and that is located in New York. The other IPs from the AfD (ie, 71.249.179.74, 50.74.1.34 and 68.167.21.82) also appear to be from New York, so they could be sock/meat puppets. I can't do anything, for two reasons - firstly I'm at work for the next 10 hours; secondly (and more importantly) I am very much involved here. You could start a sockpuppet investigation yourself or take this to ANI. The language in the most recent 'keep' shows it to be Standage - both in the style and in the "the references I found" statement. RE: Stone Rollin'

I reverted your recent edit to this article. Another user had inquired about me removing this note in the Track listing section as well. The citation you used does not support the text, as it only says that Saadiq recorded a hidden track for the album. While I know too that the song follows the last track on the album, it has to be proven with a source and I've tried looking for a source for the text, but could not find one. If a source could be found indicating the song's place (when, where it occurs) in the track listing/album, it would make sense to include it in this section. Otherwise, it seems sufficient to just have the article's only mention of the hidden track in the "Recording" section as it is now. Use of ASIN template

Hi there. This is following your revert. My reading of the old deletion discussion is that {{ASIN}} should only be used as an ID of last resort, where no free sources are readily available, which clearly isn't the case with Bad Reputation (Joan Jett album) where discogs and allmusic links are readily available. Hi Muhandes, thanks for the follow-up. I think the "last resort" comments were more directed at books than CDs (ie, where an ISBN doesn't exist). My take on it is, if the template exists then we are free to use it, as long as we think it adds value to the article. As most Amazon pages for CDs include a professional review of the record and/or a bio on the artist, I think they do add value. Plus, they also include user reviews, something that we're not allowed to include in articles, so that makes them even more important in my view, as I'd much rather read reviews from real users than professional critics when I'd trying to decide whether to buy a CD or not. Given that it's quite likely that many readers are going to go over to Amazon and search for the item anyway, why not make it easier by providing a link. Plus, when the links use the official ASIN template, we are ensuring that it's not somebody's personal referal link. Your thoughts? Robman94 (talk) 18:19, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

The comment was clearly made at CDs since it says "But if there are links to Discogs / Allmusic / other sites, then it should be safe to remove then". My take is that the template exists for a very certain purpose, and not as a blanket permission to overthrow WP:ELNO #5. It's a tool that can be used for a good purpose (linking to items where no other link is possible) and a bad purpose (promoting Amazon). Yes, Amazon pages sometimes include a review, but there are much better review sites. I'm not sure why you say "it's quite likely that many readers are going to go over to Amazon and search for the item anyway". Amazon is not even in my top 10 websites to search for information. My opinion is exactly as Headbomb put it, and as I believe editors in the TfD intended - don't use this unless there is no other option. --Muhandes (talk) 18:36, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

I was referring to Rich Farmbrough's comment on the old TfD page: "ASIN is used as an ID of last resort, and having a template helps keep track of those items that use ASIN. Also Amazon do maintain pages for unavailable items. Please replace ASINs with with ISBNs or OCLC where pssible, but don't kill the template, or remove links willy-nilly". My opinion is still that links to Amazon are useful because there are user comments there, and it's one of the first places that I go to to read those comments, even if I end up buying the CD from somewhere else. Neither the Discogs page or the Allmusic page have user comments. Having said that, I don't have the time or passion to fight to make wikipedia better these days, so if you're passionate that the link should be removed, go for it, I won't revert it. You would think, right? There are plenty Deletionists here on Wikipedia whose only contribution to the project is to delete other people's work, they rarely create pages themselves. You wouldn't believe the struggles that I went through to prevent the WU LYF and Go Betty Go pages from being deleted. The trick is, don't launch a page before it's ready. If you're still compiling references, etc it's a better idea to start the page in your own user space, then move it to the main area once you have enough refs for it to survive deletion attempts. I hear you and it could perhaps be better written. The background to this article is that it used to get deleted a lot, so we had to really drive home the notability to prevent it from continuing to get deleted. It was easier to add those references as direct quotes that wrapping them up in some creative text. I think I added most of them and I have no relationship to the band, so it's not a promo for them. I would have no problem with it if you wanted to reformat that section, just don't delete any of the references or the deletionists will jump on it again. Collaboration of Punks

First, if OTRS has not confirmed the copyright release, then we have to act as if it is copyrighted. Second, fair use is irrelevant: our criteria for use of copyrighted images is much more stringent, and a picture of the record label will never pass them. Hi Gary, thanks for writing. I guessed you were probably working on behalf of the band, and you hopefully noticed that I fixed the photo that you loaded so that it wouldn't get deleted (Aixa helped me with that). Anyway, bands often misunderstand the nature of a Wikipedia page about them, as they often consider the Wiki page to be an extension of their other social media pages (like Facebook, etc) but that is not the case. There will often be information here that the band would not chose to put on their own sites, and the stuff with Emily is just such an example. Back in 2010, I needed the references that came with the American Idol news just to keep the page here and have it pass notability guidelines. But regardless, it is a part of the band's history, so it has a place here, even if it's not something that they might want to publicize anymore. We also have to remove promo type language that bands often add to their wiki pages. Robman94 (talk) 23:03, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

A friend of mine, who is a professional photographer, has taken a photo of someone else (a living person), and has been asked by that someone to send the following e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, so that the photo can be used to illustrate that someone's Wikipedia article (BLP):

I hereby affirm that I, (name), am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of the media work (link to work)

I agree to publish the above-mentioned work under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International.

I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work, even in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites.

I am aware that the copyright holder always retains ownership of the copyright as well as the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by the copyright holder.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

My friend is somewhat concerned about granting this right, particularly about these two sentences:

Given all this preamble, I have two simple questions, please Rob:

1. Is there a Wikipedia page which explains the options open to owners of photographs for granting different types of licenses to Wikipedia users? If so, please would you be kind enough to add the link in your reply to my query?
2. Is there an option whereby a photographer can grant the right to use a photograph only for the use in a specific Wikipedia article, and nowhere else? If there is, please would you point me to it?

Short answer: no. In order for a photo to be valid for Wikipedia it has to be "free", which means anyone can take that photo and basically do what they want with it, as long as they credit the original author. And that includes commercial magazines or websites using it, free of charge. So, if the author doesn't agree to those terms, he shouldn't release the photo under that license and we can't use it here. Robman94 (talk) 22:06, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Ways to improve Redbird (band)

Hi, I'm Rosguill. Robman94, thanks for creating Redbird (band)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. While it appears that Redbird passes WP:GNG and WP:BAND based on coverage cited on other Wikipedia pages related to the band, this article needs more citations to non-trivial, non-self-published coverage of the band.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Hi @Rosguill:, to be honest, I don't even know the band, I just created the page because I noticed that there were pages for both of their albums and for all 3 members, but not for the band itself. As all 3 members are notable, the page is allowed. I added some refs but called it a stub in the hopes that other editors such as yourself would add more. As I'm sure you're aware, I don't really know what I'm doing when wiki-editing (a steep learning curve) so apologies for having mucked anything up. Yes, I just thought I'd add a few general details, and take out those 3 albums you mentioned as I don't play on any of them. I've seen the Ernie Graham connection elsewhere, but I don't know where it originated. I hope you don't mind me inserting the alternative close-up photo either? Hey Andrew, I hate to question your memory, but I checked the actual record sleeves for the Nick Lowe (pic) and Garland Jeffreys (pic) albums and they both list you in the credits, are you sure you didn't play on them? According to Discogs, you just played on the song "Long Walk Back" on Nick's album. Perhaps it was originally recorded for another album and was later added to this one? What do you think? Musics magazine

I saw that you've worked on Musics (magazine). I would like to see more in-line citations in that article so I can remove the eleven year old template as soon as possible. Can you do that? I would like to see every sentence with a citation. The "History and profile" section has only one citation, on the first sentence. Where did the rest of the information come from?

@Vmavanti: To tell you the truth, I don't remember how I stumbled across that article, it was probably on a list of un-referenced articles, so I added a bunch to it. It was one single ref when I started. I doubt that I'll be doing any more work on it, I was just getting it started so someone else could expand on my work. Any reason why you couldn't do it? Record labels in Discographies

Hi Qlazarus, I noticed that you've been making many edits to discographies and one of the changes that you're doing is to remove the record label from the list. I assumed there must have been some change to the MOS asking for this, but I checked and listing the label is still valid, so may I ask, why are you doing that? Thanks, Rob.
