Ref desk alcohol question

Reticuli, I've noted your alcohol question at the Ref Desk on the talk page as a question of concern (see here). I note specifically that you've asked "what medically could be happening" and that your claims of "this isn't med advice" are moot if the content of the question doesn't back that up. Most specifically, I'm concerned that the question is an open invitation for diagnoses without explicitly requesting them. — Lomn 16:08, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Ref desk: Need names of specific theories or names at play here

I read the question after you already got your answer. Not that I would have any idea as to how to answer... But anyway, I just wanted to say that I understood what you were looking for from the beginning. It's not just you. A lot of people on the desks are just really anal about adhering to the rules there. And then some days aren't as bad as others. There was a discussion on the talk page once over someone asking if it was safe to swallow chewing gum. Some felt it was medical advice. Although a few days later, someone asked about whether they were being too emotional whenever they'd hear about someone else's death. It apparently made them rather depressed and they felt a great amount of empathy and compassion towards those who were relatives of the deceased. Several people answered giving info and opinions about empathy and such before anyone even mentioned whether the questioner should consult a psychologist.

I've found that phrases like "Could you point me to articles that discuss the ethical concepts that would be involved in the trial..." help a bit. Asking for articles instead of asking more open ended questions helps.
