Andhra Pradesh
Heyo, I didn't want to start an edit war, I was just wondering why your using |ð| in the pronunciation for Andhra Pradesh when Telugu doesn't use that sound. Khronicle I (talk) 19:36, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Khronicle I, The IPA pronunciation in the article is {{IPAc-en}} which isn't meant for Telugu words or any Indic words for that matter and as a result it is devoid of a lot of sounds that are normally used in these languages. The previous pronunciation used
'd'
which reads as the d in dye, cad, ladder. Clearly that is not how Andhra is pronounced, the sound is more akin to the'ध'
in Hindi, the closest equivalent I could find in {{IPAc-en}} was'ð'
. While it isn't perfect I think it works better than the previous pronunciation. - Ideally we should be using {{IPA-te}} here, I have no knowledge of the language so I haven't changed the pronunciation to the {{IPA-te}} format. If you do, I would encourage you to create a more accurate pronunciation using {{IPA-te}}, the pronunciation key can be found here. Hope this explanation was satisfactory. Do let me know if you need any further clarification. Prolix 💬 11:22, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Prolix, I should be able to add the Telugu pronunciation. My reasoning behind using /d/ is that the IPA for the wiktionary page uses that pronunciation, that the pronunciation of
'ध'
is /d̪ʱ/ which is approximated as /d/ in English as /d̪ʱ/ is a plosive like /d/ and not a fricative like /ð/[1], for example the th in that would be represented with /ð/, and that all sources that I can find on its pronunciation use /ˌæn.dɹə pɹəˈdɛʃ/[2]. Khronicle I (talk) 12:16, 2 November 2020 (UTC)- Khronicle I, I think the pronunciation you're referring to is an anglicized version of the name. I think the best way to go about this would be to add the actual Telugu pronunciation and an anglicized IPAc-en pronunciation right after. With respect to the latter, could you please share a better source for the pronunciation? Youtube wouldn't work as a source as you must be aware, any official document or reputable source that includes an anglicized pronunciation for Andhra Pradesh would do. About my edit on Khadi
Hey, so that we can settle things straight, I edited the article so that it fitted better with MOS:BOLDLEAD and MOS:PRON as well as the use of {{IPAc-en}}. Also, the pronunciation of [ˈkadə] doesn't sound too English-y. If that's an actual valid pronunciation in another language, please specify that language.— oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... - Hi AmazingJus, I don't mind the usage of IPAc-en. I reverted because IAST should be used for Hindi pronunciations. I had started a discussion on the talk page as well which you are welcome to participate in. I had tried to say this in my previous edit summary but that didn't work out for some reason. Prolix 💬 10:00, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
- @AmazingJus: Also, regarding the IPAc-en pronunciation you added, I just wanted to let you know that the actual word is not pronounced that way. I'm not well versed with this subject so It'd be helpful if you could elaborate on the appropriate type of pronunciation to add here. Should it be faithful to the actual word or should it be an anglicized version to aid readers not familiar such pronunciation?
- Thanks for you reply. Well, if you can find an official pronunciation in English, please use that. Otherwise, you can use {{IPA-all}} or if it's something like Hindi, use {{IPA-hi}} for the more 'local' pronunciation — oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... [ɡəˈdæɪ̯]! 22:38, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

Adani Logo
Dear Prolix, you're misreading the whole thing. Let me help you out, a logo with a Trademark/TM can be used only it hasn't issued a registeration by the competent copyright authority. Since, the logo has already granted registeration on April 2016, then we have to update the file with a new file without TM. As of now, no SVG file is available, that's why I'm putting up the PNG file. In case, somebody updates the SVG file in Wikimedia Commons... then surely we will use it. If you have any doubt, then feel free to ask. - Hatchens (talk) 06:36, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hatchens, I think I understand what you mean, this is the first time I'm hearing of the trademark symbol being an issue. The original source for the SVG does not have a trademark symbol anyway, I'll be replacing the SVG with a new version that doesn't have the trademark symbol soon. Let me know if there are any other issues you'd like to discuss. Thanks for clarifying this! Prolix 💬 06:49, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Prolix, thanks for the help man. Trademark laws are very interesting. If you look at all the companies, such as IBM, Sony, Google... None of them are having TM or Registered marks on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons files. It goes like this... You file an application for a logo/trademark. Till the time you are not granted the registration certificate... you got to use TM. Once the certificate is granted, you got to use the registered trademark symbol ® for a period of 6 months to 1 year (as an intimation to other people). Then, after 6 months or a year, it's up to the trademark holder to use that symbol or not. Because anyhow he/she is protected by the copyright laws. - Hatchens (talk) 06:57, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hatchens, I had no idea that's how it worked. I never really gave those symbols much thought really. I'd always just assumed that they were supposed to be used and their absence anywhere was an anomaly. Now thanks to your edifying response, I have a better idea of how this all works. I really appreciate you being so respectful as well. Have a nice day! Prolix 💬 07:16, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Prolix, hey! c'mon... we all are here for a greater good. Since this company (Adani Group), I guess is from India, that's why I will recommend you to read this. Generally TM/® rules are pretty similar across the world because most of the countries are members of World Intellectual Property Organization. Apology and Request
I understand the edit for the electronic voting machine was disruptive but the one for 'Government of India' just wanted to lay stress that the India is a 'federal republic' not a 'unitary one' which the page seemed to appear like. I mean, please do have a look at the page 'Federal Government of United States', you'll know what I mean. Furthermore, please stop reverting all of my previous edits since all of them were done with accurate citations, maybe have a look at them before deciding on reverting them? I understand about the electronic voting machine one but please take that one in good faith. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Addie666 (talk • contribs)
- @Addie666: Your edits on the Government of India may have been in good faith but they should have been preceded by a proper consensus building process. Especially given the importance of the page such a casual move was entirely unwarranted. Not to mention you've been making such edits even after being warned not to do so. Edits such as yours require sufficient citations and consensus before being applied, a process which you may not have been aware of but have certainly failed to adhere to once being informed of its existence. I did go through the citations on your previous edit and wasn't able to discern how you arrived at the figures you've added, please take to the talk page and detail your changes as per WP:BRD. - Cjslaby, I believe I already pointed out the issue here and another editor has linked to the relevant policies as well. Your addition of a relevant bibliographic reference is not problematic or wrong, it's the location and formatting you used that was inaccurate. On Wikipedia we use inline citations via an appropriate citation template. In your case this would be {{Cite book}}. Once you create an inline citation it will automatically be displayed at the bottom of the page via the {{Reflist}} template. Please read up on the relevant Manual of Style guidelines and add your reference at the appropriate location. Thanks Prolix 💬 19:12, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Edits reverted on Maruti Suzuki
Hi, just wanted to understand why this edit was reverted. No content was removed at all, some of it was only shifted to the introduction. The current introduction to the article feels inadequate.
PS - I am new to Wikipedia contributions (this is the first time I have edited anything here), would like to create an account and actively contribute to automobile-related content here more in the future. If I am missing something, please explain in a little detail.
Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 183.83.147.211 (talk • contribs)
- Hi 183.83.147.211, I understand why you would be confused. You shifted content from the body to the introduction (lead) since you felt the lead was too short. This is not how it works on Wikipedia. According to WP:LEAD, the lead is a summary of what is already in the article, therefore it is not repetition. The lead is meant to be as concise as possible and provide only the most crucial information about the topic. I appreciate you trying to clarify here, if you have any other questions feel free to ask. Prolix 💬 12:54, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

History images
Regarding Karnataka, the images in the History section are excessive because there are far too many of them given the length of the section. On my screen they stretch down into Geography, and Geography's only image has been pushed into subdivisions. This is a MOS:IMAGELOCATION concern. There are sandwiching issues elsewhere in the article, but in History the number of images is actually disrupting the article formatting. CMD (talk) 02:53, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Chipmunkdavis, I understand that there are issues with accommodating the number of images in that section as it is now. Is there no way to fix this other than removing those images? A small gallery section right below the text could work. Many articles have a history section first with many important images but displaying them is difficult due to the infobox, a gallery seems to be the best solution as of now. In the Karnataka Wikipedia article it is given the date of formation of Mysore state which was renamed as Karnataka in the year as I had edited, so can we use a Wikipedia article as a citation? Or was my edit disallowed since it's the date of the renaming of the state and not the formation of the state when in the context it was about the date of formation? I'm sorry the links aren't working, I'm a noob to Wikipedia editing 😅, but I think that wouldn't be necessary Master Sam 77 (talk) 16:10, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Master Sam 77, the context of the sentence here refers to state formation. It speaks of the period before 1956 when Bengaluru was the capital of the Mysore state and the period after 1956 when it remained the capital of the unified State of Mysore. The 'unified state of Mysore' is appropriately referred to as Karnataka since it has since been renamed. Therefore 1956 is the correct in that context.

- Oh actually, I do need help. In National Bravery Award article, the table in the Bharat Award is messed up. I tried fixing it but made the whole section worse, could you look into it? Master Sam 77 (talk) 09:52, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Master Sam 77, fixed! Editing tables is much easier when using source mode. Prolix 💬 12:28, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

- Exactly! I use it most of the time. But since I'm learning it day by day with eventual progress, I wasn't able to fix it correctly 😅 Master Sam 77 (talk) 13:19, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Master Sam 77, no issues, the formatting takes a bit of time to get the hang of. Prolix 💬 14:20, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

- Yep, and this is going to be my 200th edit!! A celebration now :D and I'll be going on a Wikibreak for a couple of months, I'm an Indian and you might be aware of the exams JEE and NEET and the magnitude of competitivenss in it and so I'll have to change my focus towards these exams. I will occasionally edit pages while taking breaks during study sessions and will come back and help make Wikipedia a better place! You've been a very kind person and I'd thank you a lot for that! See ya in a few months! And all the best to your future endeavours as well!! Master Sam 77 (talk) 14:28, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Then why don't you delete the content given in services of indian railways to pakistan? Since all the train services to pakistan are suspended due to terrorist activity. The same situation is happened to sri lanka but as a natural disaster. If you are trying to delete the past train services of indian railways, then you should have to delete the content present in services to pakistan but you are not doing this? I don't know why. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raybellrich (talk • contribs) 13:21, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Raybellrich, there's a difference between the existence of an actual rail line that has been suspended vs. one that does not exist. The 'rail line' you mentioned in your edit is merely a ferry service, there never has been a rail connection between the two countries. Prolix 💬 14:27, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
It comes under the topic of services only and not as a railway line my friend. So my edit on indian railways is correct and more over, It is a combined service of a train as well as ferry ship. If you are searching for railway tracks in future there is a plan to construct a railway bridge along ram sethu bridge which is being planned by the Indian and sri lankan government. I've added reference for that don't you read it my friend? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raybellrich (talk • contribs) 17:37, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
- Raybellrich, I'm sorry, a ferry service is entirely irrelevant to an article about the Indian Railways, please stop wasting my time. Prolix 💬 18:38, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
