No, I didn't use any particular planned format.. I guess my band pages have a similar format (if you look at Machine Gun Fellatio and Hilltop Hoods, a couple of others that I've done) but it's not really intentional. Thanks for the nice welcome. Just thought I'd reply to a few of the things you said on my page. :)

It took me months and months to have anything more than a couple of bare links on my userpage. :)" My website is coded in PMWiki, which isn't too dissimilar to MediaWiki. Also, I hang around a MediaWiki-powered writing forum a lot, so I know some of the basics. Oh, and I've been here for aaages and made a couple of minor edits before I decided to stay and started an account. :)

Yes, I know a link's not everything, but it does help. Would the letter from the Board to the students in retalliation count? It's not available to the public. I'm looking up the relevant stories now. I've found some SMH articles online that are relevant, but I can't get the actual article, just the headlines in the archive... How did you get the other smh article link? The first and seventh articles are most relevant.

Good to see your yahoo breifcase is still up. Yes, I remember you, and yes, I thought I'd skim through your emails of 2001 before replying. Still a pity you moved to melbourne. =P (And I just remembered where from. Moruya, right?)

So did you find me because of an edit of mine on HSC (I see you're still hooked), or did you search for me after your flipping through your scrapbook? And I thought that SMH article was meant for my scrapbook, and my grandparents..... I didn't think anyone else would put it away. I still get the occasional email from students wondering if I have some spare notes around (also had some funny encounters at uni when class of 2001/2 recognised my name...), but any fame from that seems to have ended.

Yes, our mates Ian and Mark and James are still going away at it with Bored of Studies, it seems. Quite glad I got it off my hands and the original reasons I set it up aren't as significant today (equity in poorly-taught New HSC), and yet they give no recognition to hscstuff, or even to #hsc, but at least they've now changed the text from saying the idea was innovatively theirs.

Have you kept in touch with anyone? I did a pretty poor job while away in 2002, and have done an even poorer job since. Oh well!

So you're into Aussie music still in a big way? Maybe watch for my bro. Went to a fantastic gig of his tonight, at the Basement. Big gig to follow their HSC. We're waiting for this link to turn blue: Hytrada.

So, it seems for you too, the knowledge-oriented procrastination continues. This time instead of working with notes when I should have been studying notes, it's just Wikipedia (when I should be writing 2500-word essays). Tough life.

Looks like I'm another in a long line of those unable to help with the request for a fence photo. Perth, where I live, is a goodly many hours drive from the fence, and I haven't been near it for years. In fact, I've crossed it twice in each direction, once each in 1986 and 1993, and apart from that only by air! Unlike the Great Wall of China, the fence is not really visible from the air, let alone outer space! Re: News Ltd Style Guide

Hi Pfctdayelise. Thanks for your message. Yes, I have a copy of the News Ltd Style Guide and I find it very useful. It's generally considered to be the preferred Style Guide for Australian journalism degrees and for papers that don't produce their own. I don't think there's an online version of it, but you can buy it from most of the universities who teach journalism or from News Ltd and you can order it online here: [1] for $24.95. If you are into architecture at all the interior of the Capitol would be worth seeing (assuming you haven't seen it before). I think the stage and seating where changed to put the arcade through on the ground floor but the ceiling is amazing (possibly a little over the top). Last time I was there there was restoration work going on (comedy festival, probably 4 years ago), it probably looks better now. I can't garauntee that the images will be used in the Walter Burley Griffin article (becasue of space limitations), so don't go too far out of your way to get one. But if you did get a nice photo of the interior we could always make a Capitol Theatre, Melbourne article to use them in. --Martyman-(talk) 23:11, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Fauna

The article should be completely stable (at least it has been since it was featured) - I found an error in the number of monotremes listed (annoying taxonomic revisions) that I've just fixed, I doubt anything will change until the onsalught of vandalism on the day it hits the main page. So in anwser to your question the most recent version would be the best one to make a spoken version of since all the facts should be right.--nixie 10:46, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Spike/Faith pages

Hi, sorry. I just assumed that it would be more general to refer to them as "vampire" or "character" than asign them to the particular show Buffy when they have appeared on Angel also. I did give a reason for my revert, directly after the revert itself. Rude? Perhaps as rude as it is to disregard an existing article, creating a new one and then suggest the older to be merged into the new one? I'm having a hard time understanding why that was done at all. I reverted it back simply because I found the whole thing with the new article and the merging to be too odd to be real. Yes, you're right. I think I was too sleepy when I noticed the change, and out of curiosity I visited Biot's talk page and saw that someone else had brought up the American / British spelling thing around the same time period and so I made assumptions before double-checking the actual spelling. I feel pretty silly now haha, I'll change it back of course. Although I don't think I've put much on the Commons (although I should have the few times I've uploaded images; I didn't really understand it then, though), I had no idea about these tips. Minor edits

I wasn't sure what constituted a minor edit, although I do admit that I have made some admittedly major edits and marked them minor, like [2]. I had considered things minor unless they were actually changing the content of an article; Ie putting something in a table was a minor edit, etc. Replying to the helpdesk isn't an edit at all. But I guess it certainly isn't minor. :S

Work on the Help Desk is not such a thankless task. It's more thankful than the same by email: I've tried that and it's a lot harder; atm I'm working at uni full time and can't do any such thing. I've had a good few handfuls of Help Desk thank-yous. And they're usually worth a lot more than the prettier RFA thank yous.

List of schools according to VCE results

Hi, I do not think it is The Age copyright, the Age had a pdf file with the schools listed in alphabetical order, I have a list ordered by the VCE results , I spend a couple of hours writing the necessary scripts to extract this information (and some manual editing as well). Since the information itself is not a copyright, and the presentation of the information is as different from the original as can be.

I think the information is important for the parents in Victoria, they are actually waiting for the VCE results to be published and spend quite a lot of time rearranging the data to get the ranges for the schools. They specially buy the newspaper to get the info. The data AFAIK is not readily available on the net elsewhere. So it is notable.

I will do maintenance by myself, next year I would write better scripts to exclude manual processing of the information. I think historical data maybe important too.

I do not think the list is POV as it is the result of automatical calculations. I (or any other editors) can write a disclaimers, showing why VCE results is not always a good measure of the school performance. Have a good day abakharev 02:30, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Moving to Commons

Hey Thanks for the Welcome! Anyway i just got a question about moving images to Wikipedia:Commons. Reading the Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons im abit confused on how to actually move the images there, do you need to actually re-upload the image on to Commons, or is there a tool or some quick way of moving it (like the move tab for articles)?

regarding one of my spoken articles - thanks!

It's a typically hot summer here in Adelaide, and being in a room with the doors and windows closed (without, by choice, any air-conditioning) to do voice recordings isn't that much fun. As I can't do much of my own stuff, and personally I think the Spoken Wikipedia project could do with having more women involved, give us a hoy if you want any assistance with editing.

Yes I checked out Wikipedia PD resources. Nothing there. I will do as you've advised. Thanks for taking the time, my friend, I appreciate it. I checked out tags too, but got lost in gibberish. Seems like most advice here in Wikipedia is written for those who already understand, rather than for those who would like to understand; and so I seem to go 'round in circles in the pursuit of understanding. For instance, consider this statement in Wikipedia: ICT under the heading "Presumed Free images": "These are images that have been unverified to be free of copyright issues, but some user in good faith believes to have been created by the uploader and hence are mostly public domain or GFDL, i.e. redistributable under the GFDL." I understand that this may make sense to someone who is familiar with the context. And I read everything prior to it. But I don't understand the phrase "some user in good faith believes to have been created by the uploader". I'm sorry, but it doesn't ring any bells in my head. I don't think I am stupid. Naive, yes. Ignorant, no doubt. So, you see, I do not understand Wikipedia, per se. I've done this many times, in my pursuit of understanding, and I find that, in many instances, Wikipedia help is written to satisfy the elite, those who know all the nuances of Wikipedia, not for those who wish to gain understanding. RFA?

Hi Brianna,

... I was wondering whether you had any interest in being an admin... Maybe when your edit count is a little higher.

I still haven't worked out what use or necessity there is in being an admin if one is mostly around to work on articles and not sysop-necessitating chores, so really that's a decision for you. I'm sure you've considered it before, but I can understand not self-nominating, especially with a lower edit count.

Although I haven't followed your contribs closely, in terms of knowing policy, behaving well and speakin proper, I don't know what major objections there would be. Do you feel you are experienced enough on the Wikipedia namespace?

Well I understand your rant entirely. I have been doing a lot of chores and not as much article editing as I like to anyway. But one can often just get frustrated not being an admin. The admin process is on one hand too easy and on the other too hard. There are many users who should be admins at 1000 posts or so, and others who at 4000 still don't get it.

So I've been trying to work out what adminship is by being one. People seem to do very different things with it, and not all admins can be responsible for all admin tasks. Really, once one is an admin though, the wikiness of this place is opened up: I now have the option to edit the MediaWiki namespace for instance, but I still don't do it without some community consensus. To me this opening up of the wiki means I can finally edit the Contact us page, or many templates, without the hassle of waiting for someone to say "I can do it" and also bother. jnothman ^talk 13:45, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Re: helpdesk

Um, sorry about the delay... happy new year and all that!

First of all, I suggest getting individual messages - it makes replying to them actually work. Second, you have to reply to helpdesk-l and (cripes I haven't edited in a while) the address of the person who posted the message. There's a good list of stuff which is commonly asked available at meta:OTRS/en which answers a lot of the "Can I enrol at your university/do you know how to contact Paris Hilton" stuff. The list used to be moderated (which stopped the spam) but we had such a backlog that, er, it got unmoderated. So I hope your spam filter works well!

Oh yeah, most of the regulars are on holidays (which means that nothing is getting answered) - so if you're still interested and have some time to burn, by all means go for it!

Mentoring /Minor edits

I would not volunteer a workload for another user; if someone who considers themselves reasonably experienced, and feels they have enough time, would like to volunteer themselves, then that's good.

BTW, I think you are marking all your edits as "minor" by default, at the moment. You can change this setting in Special:Preferences. Remember to mark your edits as minor only when they genuinely are (see Wikipedia:Minor edit). "The rule of thumb is that an edit of a page that is spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a 'minor edit'."

• I would be glad to take on the workload of helping another user. Its certainly okay with me, I just don't think I'm deserving of the coveted title of "mentor". Concerning my edits, most are minor right now (I haven't made any new articles lately) , but as for most of my edits being "minor" on my contribution list in the past, that's misleading, it is indeed, because I have "minor edit" set by my default on my preferences by default (I beleive when I made a few articles I had them as minor :/ ). You are most certainly welcome to continue helping any user you like. You don't have to call yourself "mentor"; just go ahead and do it. • Megaman, one reason I'd like him to have a mentor is so that he stops flooding the Wikipedia:Help desk with questions. These could easily be resolved if he was just asking one person.

Please look out for context when you reply on the HD. Regarding this, have you read his talk page? Did you notice the comment I left? Did you look at his contribs and notice that he'd left a note on the talk page of an admin asking for the images to be deleted? If you read these things, you will see that IfD would be a waste of time when they can all be speedy deleted by an admin, and since he has already contacted User:Garykirk, he may as well go ahead and do it.

You have the right approach in that policy should be followed, and one should not bite the newbies, and be helpful on the help desk, but sometimes you've got to lift your head a bit higher and see the bigger picture. I am bit concerned that this user is more worried about his user page and signature than making good quality contributions to an encyclopedia. He is quite young, and I think he could do with an experienced hand guiding him towards understanding the wiki philosophies. Simply answering his questions, without considering the context they're coming from, won't really help. Like, he asks how to start a WikiProject. I don't think new editors should be jumping into starting WikiProjects straight away. So rather than telling him how, I would find out why he wants to know and try and guide him towards existing Wikiprojects or users with similar interests.

• Indeed. I perfectly understand, and I thank you for bringing up that point. I hadn't considered motives or alternive agenda's, in the mist of my willingness to help. Not to say Madcowpoo is going to be a loafer, or say, a troll, we just need to bring him up to standard on what wikipedia is all about. I also did not consider going into detail regarding his new wikiproject and somewhat overzealous behavior (which is just fine with me). In my future dealings, I will desist being so linear in my following of policy and helpfulness and add in some constructive critsisim as well. In closing, I'd like to continue to help him out, and I will take fuller responsibilty of his queries so the Help page can get some breathing room. :) Allow me to assist for awhile and see if I can handle it or not; if not, then I'll let a admin mentor him. • Okay, I've posted a friendly comment on his talkpage, and he seems to have stopped for the momment. Regarding the shadowing, I've made it a long term goal, and I'll keep up on assisting him periodically. Well I have been mulling over what to do here and I think that what I want to do is to arrange the schools vs years/ages in a timeline of sorts. Have a look at Sam Rosen (sportscaster) for an idea of what I'm talking about. There is a lot of overlap between the various age groups per school type. For example in the U.K. there is state funding for places for 4 year olds (called early years) but compulsory education does not start until 5 years. So pre-schools go from 2-5 years and primary schools start at 4. This carries on all the way up to 14 where vocational starts but overlaps secondary through to 18.

So what I want to do is to set up a test template using the timeline script and see if I can get it close to what I want, and then go in and replace the {{Template:Education}}.

Moruya etc

Hi - thanks for your kind messages. I go to the coast regularly and we often drive down to Moruya. I have good intentions about writing lots more on the area, particularly natural history - I am so woefully ignorant and I find that contributing to the Wikipedia is an excellent incentive to research and to write up what I have found - I can then find it again easily and some of it might stick in my memory by writing it down. Beats crossword puzzles and Sudoko which was getting a little repetitive :-).

As for RfA, I wouldn't necessarily say no, and am very flattered by your offer. I feel very much also a pleb but in a way am very happy to continue to edit. I am somewhat inspired by Adam Carr who has taken a firm line and said that editing is what he wants to do. Then again the roll-back button would be nice as I do revert vandalism ... I am not sure whether I am such a respected wikipedian though as I seem to attract sometimes the harsh words of others - especially on WP:AWNB. Gets a bit depressing sometimes :-( but that is what of course happens when you only read words and cannot include non-verbal cues - the comments are probably not really meant personally or intended to be as harsh as they come across. The advice from my better-half is to stay away from talk pages and just edit! Hence my ambivalence - especially exposing myself on RfA - not least when considering the unkind things that have been sent in that forum - as a sensitive soul I am not sure I feel like opening myself up for that! History of Brunswick

Hey Pftctdayelise, thanks for the info. I only visited the Dawson Street side of the Brickworks. Is all the housing on the other side? How did you get access to take those photos?

Regarding Les Barnes' street names book. I've browsed through that at the State Library. It's very interesting. Another good way to find out about the history of specific buildings or streets is to use the old Sands & McDougall directories (on microfische in the State Library's genealogy room). I've been slowly trying to narrow down when my place was built (BTW - I'm in Brunswick East, near Lygon & Glenlyon).

Regarding the Retreat Hotel. I've got more info on hotels at another subpage of mine: User:Cnwb/hotels.

Regarding editing either of those pages - no, I don't mind. In fact, I'd love it if others contributed. They really just began as a storage place for collating facts before I could work out what to do with it all. Cnwb 21:34, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Pfctdayelise, thank you for your welcome note at my user page. I have had a look at the Australian user stuff as you suggested, particularly the Adelaide entries as that is where I am. The SA entries look pretty good to me, so I'll leave that to those doing it (too many cooks and all that.) However, as an old physical chemist, I'll probably have a go at some of the entry under chemistry and especially chemical bonding there are some interesting absences of information that used to be central to that field. It will just take a while to get current again - I've spent the last 25 years after getting a PhD in physical / photochemistry chemistry in the IT & Telecommunications field, so my working knowledge in chemistry is a bit dated. Is there anyone "in charge" of such a topic, if so how do I find out who they are?

Learning the rules, then obeying them

Thanks for clearing my head on WP:3RR.

Am I in violation of WP:SPAM if

• There is a proposal to kill some article or group of articles, and I go to the talk pages of the articles and try to place a NPOV link to inform the people who are active there, about the proposal.
• I tell a bunch of people about a project that I think might be of interest to them, based on the category they in or the types of articles they have contributed to.
• I do some heavy work on some article, then I visit talk pages of past editors to give them a heads up that I have changed what they had worked on.
• I write some piece, like in a talk page, then I point other people at that write-up, saying I think they might be interested.

Hey pfctdayelise :) Nah, I didn't think you were being harsh at all. Since posting that question, I've been learning more about the debate around userboxes. I agree with you, in that they could be diverting attention away from the task of building the encyclopedia...and so I've become more interested in learning the wiki markup well enough to create little boxes the way I want them to look, without relying on any template at all :) And learning that markup will surely help in editing the encyclopedia at large.
