Yeah, no problem. And yes, I do think it ought to be semiprotected. I also think that users who vandalize even once should be banned on sight. I've become irritated by constantly seeing messages that say "If you do that again you will be banned." One time I even noticed one user talk page that had much more than one message that said "This is your last warning." For Pete's sake! Just delete the user! UPDATED THOUGHT: Or maybe they were already banned after those messages, and then after the ban expired the vandalizing continued, and warning messages continued, and they were banned again numerous times.

Your note edit

I don't think I deleted any material of yours, what are you referring to? It might have been someone else.

Sorry you're getting frustrated. You get used to vandalism after a while and it just washes right over you. We're pretty efficient at dealing with vandalism, but it is an annoyance and a drain. My recommendation is if it's worrying you too much, to take a break from vandal fighting and work on something else. Hit random article a few times and tidy up whatever you come across, or try categorizing articles that don't have categories. I have scads of other suggestions if you don't like those. Vandals are trying to piss you off, you're letting them win if it works.

We don't have to trust Kai kun: if they vandalize again, they'll be blocked, they know this. They've apologized and agreed to stop. I'll kind of keep an eye on their contributions, but I really don't think they're going to be a problem any more. Most vandals really aren't that malicious, they're just kids being dumb.

That's cool that you want to be an admin so you can help out more. Becoming an admin is a lot of work, as you may know. Almost no one is promoted without at least a few thousand edits, several months on the project, etc. But definitely keep up the good work and you'll get there eventually. delldot talk 04:20, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think you're mistaken about the note, I looked in the history and according to it you never posted to the page. Also, the page has no logs, so it hasn't been deleted or anything. Could it be another page?
Ha ha! The dead fish banner sounds funny, but I think you probably shouldn't do it as it might be taken the wrong way. You're generally discouraged from engaging with vandals except to leave them warning notices, per WP:DITV and WP:RBI: they basically just say "ignore them, they're just trying to get attention". Plus I think others may interpret your banner as getting engaged in a fight with vandals, which is definitely discouraged. You might also find that showing the vandals you're frustrated with them or engaged with them provides them more incentive to escalate the conflict. Like "now it's personal", they're getting that attention, you know? Anyway, it's up to you what you do, but I suspect other Wikipedians might be annoyed at you for doing it (and at me for suggesting it! ;) ).

Info edit

Hey, you probably noticed it since you edited it, but someone recently posted your real life first name (or so they claimed) on my talk page. I've removed it, but it's still in the history. What do you want done with this info: Leave it like it is, in the history? Delete it so that only administrators can see it if they look at the deleted version? Or have wikipedia remove it so that not even admins can see it? I think it's unlikely that anything horrible could come out of it, but I suppose it's remotely possible that some internet stalker could come after you or something. I just asked because some people prefer to keep their personal info off the internet, so I figured I'd run it by you. I agree, bringing up the condition at all, let alone misclassifying it, was unacceptable. I let them know they'd be blocked if they do it again.
I don't think there's a rule for where to post in reply, but many people do prefer to keep posts together for that reason. If you want to do it that way on your talk page, I recommend putting a note at the top of this page saying "if you leave me a message here, I will reply here to keep threads in one place" or some such, so people will know to check back here for responses. You may also want to drop me a note on my talk page saying "I replied" or something, because I kind of suck at remembering to check back.
I don't have AIM, but I do have IRC. Also, you could email me if you have an email address registered for yourself (go into your preferences and add an email address, then wait for a confirmation email and follow the directions in it).

WAIS edit

I would currently rate the article as a "start": better than a stub, but not as good as a "B class" article on the article assessment scale. The history sections are great, very informative. The main thing I would say it still needs is a lot of references (everything needs sources, see WP:ATT for the policy). Especially with something like a school, where the information isn't common knowledge, it's important to have checkable sources because someone could come in and put false info in there. So I'd recommend finding anything you can from news sources and the like that mentions the school, hopefully that will give you more info to add in to expand the article as well. Sounds good. Another idea would be to look for whatever you can find on the internet about the school, since there's probably not much. When I was in high school, during my senior year, I had essentially a class hour where I was an assistant to the junior level principal. He was a grade level principal at Westchester before it closed and had all the yearbooks up until closing. I think you're generally discouraged from editing even people's grammer and spelling on talk pages and in discussions, yeah. Let's see, about your turning wikipedia black question, I definitely think it'd be possible for you to do it at least for yourself when you sign in. E.g. look at the "skin" tab in your preferences and check out the different skins. I think the way you change the way WP displays for you is to edit your monobook.css, but that's way to advanced computer stuff for me to know how to do it. Agreed, It looks like they're trying to provoke you, so ignoring them is the best response. That threat looks like a blockable offense to me, but I'm giving them a ton of leeway, and leaving a final warning, after which they'll be blocked if they do it again. I'm not going to do the block myself because you and I have been talking so much that I consider myself involved, so it's not appropriate. If they blank your page again or do anything else that's obvious vandalism, just report them to WP:AIV, following the directions there. Leave the diffs, including the one you quoted to me, threatening to make new accounts to harrass you with. Those accounts will be blocked too, without warning as obvious sockpuppets if they do the same things. If it's something that's not obvious vandalism but still blockable, you may need to go through WP:ANB, but I don't think it will be that complicated. Thanks for changing all of the numbers by writing them out. It is a grammatically correct and rigorous improvement. FYI, however, the people retain "every thing" is a direct quotation - in the original it is "every thing" not "everything," so you aren't supposed to change it (like "Magna Charta" in the subsequent quotation. Hey, listen, I wanted to talk to you about that person that posted to my talk page. I felt like you made a good decision in ignoring them, but you could have been friendlier about it to them. I mean, if you're going to ignore someone, you don't need to tell them you're going to, right? Assuming it was Demonic Rhino (which I kind of do, since they knew to come to me), your best bet is to ignore them completely. I've had considerable experience with this, since people come harrass me for blocking them or whatnot, and I can attest that they always get bored and wander off if their edits are met with no response at all or a simple revert (had one just the other day!) You're in an unfortunate situation in that this kid has decided it's fun or something to come after you, but I assure you you're making it more fun for him by reacting at all. The way to be untrollable is to be completely unphased by it (in my case, I find it vaguely amusing, which also works). Plus, if it wasn't Demonic Rhino, you were kind of rude to an innocent person, which would be a shame. Sorry, I don't mean to be hard on you. After all, for the most part your reaction was fine.

My sock edit

Hey Padawan, glad you asked! I use the sockpuppet Delldot on a public computer because my real account has admin rights, so if it were to get hacked it could cause a fair amount of trouble for the 'pedia. So when I'm editing from a 'public computer', one that's not mine, I'm paranoid about stuff like keyloggers and other stuff that a potential hacker could use to steal my password and hack my account. In reality, it's probably pretty unlikely that all the necessary events would occur in the right sequence for this to happen. But since I'm not the only one that would suffer if it were to happen, I have a responsibility to be paranoid about it. So I edit from an account without admin rights when I'm editing from a computer I consider to be insecure, or one I'm not sure about. What the guidelines in the Wikiproject Schools state is that it is okay to include school songs as long as references exist. "As a general rule of thumb if the name of the author is known copyright usually expires 70 years after the death of the author, although some countries have slightly shorter terms. If the name of the author is not known, copyright expires 70 years after the first known performance, except for schools in the US where copyright expires 95 years after the first known performance. All school songs should be referenced. It is recommended that school songs without appropriate references where the copyright status is unclear should be deleted. Your messages edit

Hey Padawan! Yeah, I get that a lot too - "but anyone can add anything!" It shows sort of a general failure to understand the project, and how many people are working on it all the time. I usually either respond by explaining how it's a collaborative effort and how most bad changes don't stick around long. If they're willing to read about studies of accuracy (e.g. comparing accuracy of wikipedia to Britannica) or actually watch recentchanges, they'd see the project works for the most part. Of course, most of the time people aren't really interested in hearing about it, they're basically dismissing it when they say that. So for them, I say 'the proof is in the pudding'; tell them look at Wikipedia articles, see if they can find problems. Chances are, if they're looking at pretty common topics, like, I dunno Maryland or tiger, they're going to get pretty high-quality stuff. If they're looking at more obscure areas, the odds they'll find something crappy are higher; it's just part of the project, and it's what we're working to fix. In my opinion, we Wikipedians worry too much about our image; we should just be producing high quality stuff and letting people choose for themselves if they want to use it. Like 'it's here, it is what it is, use it if you want'. To me, the fact that we do produce a huge amount of high quality stuff should speak for itself.

About userboxes, userboxes has pretty much all the info you asked for. There's a list at Wikipedia:Userboxes#Gallery, and plenty of info on the page on how to make one of your own, e.g. at Wikipedia:Userboxes#Constructing_a_userbox. I just took the source of some userbox and changed the colors, text, and images till I had it how I wanted it, but you can use the templates they provide there. Have fun! public sock + paranoia edit

Yeah, I'm probably being way paranoid, especially since my work computer isn't even really that public. But it would suck to have the admin account hacked, so a little paranoia is in order. Mine's never been hacked, but a few other admins have had theirs hacked, and it was a pain dealing with the resultant mess (though I think in most of those cases weak passwords were to blame, not keyloggers).
Yeah, people are already supposed to be nice, including admins. There's WP:CIV and WP:BITE for example. I guess the best way to deal with it is to discuss it with them privately at first, and just let them know as gently as possible that it bothers you. They may not realize they're coming off as hostile, since it's so easy to misread the emotion behind people's posts. I guess if it's out of hand and that doesn't help, you'd need to get another, neutral person involved, or if it was really bad go through WP:DR. Peace, delldot talk 15:36, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hm, well, I don't really know about non-wikipedia matters. If it was me, I guess I'd just ignore it. But my advice about maybe talking to them about it privately (if possible) and letting them know it hurts your feelings might work. But if they're trying to be a jerk, there's not much you can do. Hey hey, thanks for the suggestion. I haven't been on wp for a while - which is why I was slow at replying - but I had a crack at that userbox. Something like this you wanted?

Wow, thanks for doing this! Yeah, I was definitely thinking that the one with the horse looks more appropriate for this than the bouncy Wikilogo. I also like the links in there. I must say, though, I'm sure we can come up with some more interesting colors. I just went back to my collection of userboxes and noticed that the one for art as a favorite subject is mostly purple, with white. Maybe it'll look better like that. Yeah. Definitely the horse. For some reason I read what you said as: 'the animated wiki logo' ratehr than 'the wiki logo for animation'. Silly, silly me.
As for the colours though, it's a bit hard to have much variation because the running horse has a background colour on it already (#666), so its box has to be that, and then if you mix up all the other colours, it comes out looking absurdly garish. I tried a few purples and they all looked a bit silly... this one looks ok I think, but much lighter is too contrasty and much darker gets a little confusing. Yeah, that's part of the humor that I had in mind from the beginning.
Anyways, there was that other idea of mine for a userbox that would say, "This user is a member of the Lightbox Order." Forget about that one. Eventually, I decided that the idea would be as redundant as having a userbox that says, "This user is a Jedi Knight," along with one that says "This user is a member of the Jedi Order." Request to participate in University of Washington survey on tool to quickly understand Wikipedians’ reputations edit

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington. In April, we met with some local Wikipedians to learn what they would like to know about other editors’ history and activities (within Wikipedia) when interacting with them on talk pages. The goal of those sessions was to gather feedback to help design an embedded application that could quickly communicate useful information about other Wikipedians. We have now created a few images that we feel represent some of what our participants thought was important. We would appreciate it if you took a few minutes of your time to complete an online survey that investigates whether or not these images would be useful to you. Your quick contribution would be very valuable to our research group and ultimately to Wikipedia. Wikipedia Ambassador Program in Houston edit

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a Wikipedian from Houston. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors from the Houston area, to help with Wikipedia assignments at Texas Southern University. Classes at TSU will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester, and the role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).
