User talk:Olegkagan/Archive 1

Welcome!

Although, it is a little late for that, I think. I find it hard to believe that anyone who fully and competently rewrites an article doesn't even have a talk page. Well, that's Wikipedia for you. I think I will be able to review it shortly. ResMar 18:15, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

To answer you questions regarding quality: there are a few quality scales on Wikipedia. Stubs are just short snippets of articles, maybe a sentence or a paragraph. Start-class articles contain more information, but are still too short to cover their topic area completely, or the topic itself does not contain enough information to constitute a fully fledged article. B-class articles achieve a balance of size, detail, and referencing that the categories below it lack. C-class articles are like B-class articles, but are missing something-be it that they are just short, too poorly written, etcetera. GA-class articles are the first articles that are intensively reviewed, and are held to the standards of WP:WIAGA as proven by Good article nominations. The highest class of article is a Featured article, which are determined by community vote and discussion at Featured article candidates and must comply with the entire giant framework that is the Manual of Style.
So, the article is currently B class. However, I think it would pass a GA review very easily, and it very much will be a good FA candidate with a little bit of effort. I would also contact people at WP:BOOK, see what they have to say, and then try putting it down for a GA review. ResMar 18:26, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the info and for reviewing the article. It's been a time-consuming effort fiddling with Winesburg, my first WP article, but I enjoy the work (the book) and the work (the writing) so it's worth it. I appreciate you're reaching out and starting a talk page for me. Now, to go look at your review and plan my next moves. --Olegkagan (talk) 22:33, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
I went and asked Eisfbnore to see if he can help you, he seems to be a knowledgeable bloke. =) ResMar 02:47, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Much obliged. Was just putting citations after punctuation when your message popped up. --Olegkagan (talk) 02:52, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Hi and sorry for the late response. Regrettfully I must admit that I am not the person to ask, as my command of English is relatively poor and my knowledge of American literature even poorer. I wish you good luck with it though; it looks very good. Eisfbnore talk 13:55, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
No problem. I think I've done much of the work I was going to do on the article. It's up for GA now. --Olegkagan (talk) 21:36, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

re: A Little Help

Hi, Olegkagan, thanks for getting in touch! It's so great you're working on Sherwood Anderson, a very overlooked author indeed. I would love to help with the peer review for Winesburg, Ohio, although it's admittedly been years since I've read the stories. I'll comment later today if I get a chance, but if not then certainly sometime over the long weekend. (BTW, I have very high standards when it comes to literary articles, so don't take it to heart if my nitpicks seem a little much. That's what a few trips through FAC tends to do to a reviewer. :)

Oh, Willa. She's been on my back-burner for so long I'd completely forgotten that she was there. Thanks for the offer! Maybe when I'm done with everything Crane-related, I'll give her a go with some much needed help. María (habla conmigo) 15:05, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Regarding nitpicks, do what you must. I may feel temporarily taken aback but in the end, high standards lead to featured articles. Olegkagan (talk)

Here's the first edition title page if you need it.

I placed this in the article. I saw that one of the comments in the peer review was the need for the first edition cover or title page. Good luck with the GA review. --INeverCry 05:41, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Personally, I thought that the Modern Library cover was more effective for the article, but I don't think it's such a big deal and won't fool with your edit. --Olegkagan (talk) 05:43, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Marching Men

Apologies for taking so long. I had an article I wanted to finish, and then fell under a mountain of work in real life. I'd hoped to get to it tonight, but it's looking doubtful at this point. If not tonight, this weekend for sure. Thanks for your patience. Truthkeeper (talk) 22:25, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

No worries.--Olegkagan (talk) 22:29, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Wow! Nice job. It's much improved and a very easy read. You're quite a good writer. It's nice to have someone else around working on American lit - there are very few on Wikipedia as far as I know. Definitely submit to GAN - I'll keep an eye on it. One small problem - the image in the nav template is from 1933 so probably can't be used in that way. The image licenses are confusing but basically an image isn't free unless is was published before 1923, or 70 years (I think) after the photographer's death. Assuming one knows who the photographer is or when he/she died. So just a warning about that in case it becomes an issue. Good luck! Truthkeeper (talk) 00:25, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks and thanks! I edit what I enjoy (and here and there besides). Will now submit to GAN. If the image becomes a problem, I'll just axe it.--Olegkagan (talk) 02:35, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Congratulations! I've been watching the progress and was thrilled to see the GA label added last night. Hopefully the first of many! Truthkeeper (talk) 18:40, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

The second of many. Your help was very important. :O) --Olegkagan (talk) 00:30, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh dear, my bad! I missed that. Congratulations times two and keep it up! 20th cent. Am. lit is an area sadly lacking in editors. Truthkeeper (talk) 00:48, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
I'll keep working on it, as time permits. It's definitely an interest as I'm reading it all the time. Chasing Moby-Dick currently, though probably won't be editing that one any time soon.--Olegkagan (talk) 00:55, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh dear God! I'd forgotten what it was like to be new and excited about this place - unfortunately I'm a bit burned out myself. I unwatched Moby Dick a long time ago, but will put it back on my watchlist. Good luck with it and don't ever hesitate to ping me if you have questions. Truthkeeper (talk) 01:00, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for organizing the Wikipedia Loves Libraries event in West Hollywood. I am from Seattle but am helping to organize the WLL event in Portland. I also edit articles about HIV and am glad to see that you list that as a focus.

Thank you for doing what you do. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:00, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Barnstar

  The Writer's Barnstar
For your helpful contributions to articles about books and writers. Your fine editing is noticed. And appreciated. CactusWriter (talk) 19:51, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

By the way, I do hope you will someday be able to expand Lawrence Clark Powell. I loved The Blue Train when I was a student at the University of Arizona back in the 70s, even before I realized Powell was there -- and do enjoy the autographed copy on my bookshelf. Cheers. CactusWriter (talk) 04:20, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Ah! So good to know another Powell fan. I have a copy of Blue Train right here in front of me, albeit not signed. If you like Powell's fiction, you might also enjoy A River Between (1979), El Morro (1984), and Eucalyptus Fair (1992) all published by Capra except the latter, which was released by Books West Southwest - Eucalyptus Fair being the most like Blue Train, I think. You didn't perchance go, or know anybody who went, to the library school, did you? --Olegkagan (talk) 05:33, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the recs -- I will definitely add Eucalyptus Fair to my to-read list. (Now if only I can find the time to attack these stacks of teetering books -- I'm playing a solo game of bibliphilic Jenga here.) And, no, sorry, but I didn't know anyone who studied library science at UA. CactusWriter (talk) 17:27, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
"bibliphilic Jenga" I know exactly what that's like. --Olegkagan (talk) 19:08, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

File:Wiki Loves Weho Flyer (2013).jpg

Hi Oleg Kagan. I noticed the flyer you uploaded uses some non-free images, including the logo of the County of LA library and the Twitter logo. Can you please create and upload a new flyer that does not include this copyright material? Also, any image that includes the Wikipedia globe has to be templated with the {{Non-free Wikimedia logo}} template. -- Dianna (talk) 00:06, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dianna, thanks for keeping an eye out. I just added the Non-free Wikimedia logo tag and removed the Facebook and Twitter logos from the flyer. I am an employee of the County of LA library and have permission to use the library logo. Would it be appropriate, in that case, to just change the license from something other than CC? --Olegkagan (talk) 01:06, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
It's a non-free logo and we would need an email sent to the OTRS team in order to legally have permission. If you send them an email from your work email account that might be adequate for this purpose. There's instructions at Commons:OTRS. Thanks for taking care of these copyright concerns so quickly. -- Dianna (talk) 01:17, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Email sent. --Olegkagan (talk) 16:53, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I have added an {{OTRS pending}} template to the image. That's everything. Sorry for all the extra work. :) -- Dianna (talk) 19:01, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
No bother. It was only a few minutes. --Olegkagan (talk) 19:19, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
