Speedy deletion nomination of Nigel fox

You should wait for others to write an article about subjects in which you are personally involved, instead of writing it yourself. This applies to articles about you, your achievements, your band, your business, your publications, your website, your relatives, and any other possible conflict of interest.

Creating an article about yourself is strongly discouraged. If you create such an article, it might be listed on articles for deletion. Deletion is not certain, but many feel strongly that you should not start articles about yourself. This is because independent creation encourages independent validation of both significance and verifiability. All edits to articles must conform to Wikipedia:No original research, Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, and Wikipedia:Verifiability.

If you are not "notable" under Wikipedia guidelines, creating an article about yourself may violate the policy that Wikipedia is not a personal webspace provider and would thus qualify for speedy deletion. If your achievements, etc., are verifiable and genuinely notable, and thus suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

"Highway of Tears murdered and missing"

It is true many of the victims are missing; but the moved title was awkward, left conciseness and felt grammatically incomplete- missing and murdered what? That, and it was a unilateral move of an important article, and not uncontroversial. I'd suggest going to Wikipedia:Requested moves- and if you're serious about this, I'd suggest either proposing Highway of Tears cases or just plain Highway of Tears at Requested moves. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Maps are always an issue. There are not that many free maps around (naturally, people want to sell them!). Your link was http://www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca/resources/REC1108/sitemaps/03_2018_Ortho_Rec_Hogsback%20REC1108.pdf - at the bottom of that PDF page is a link back to http://www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca/search/search-location-summary.aspx?districtCode=RDVA, and at the bottom of that page is a "Copyright" link to https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/home/copyright. and that says "All rights reserved" - which is not a license we can use. @Ronhjones: Thanks. I will make the changes. In the meantime, I am using derivative works from OpenStreetView. The usage criteria for OSV I believe is that I am free to use, I just have to properly attribute OSV. Can you please weigh in on this? NigelFox 20:48, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: I am using OpenStreetView to create maps for this. I attempted to create proper license/attribution. Can you please show me an example of an image page with the correct license/attribution for OSV derivative works?

I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). @Britishfinance: Thank you for your kind words. I am just learning to work within Wikipedia/Media and it's exciting. One area that I am still struggling with though, is proper attribution and licensing for maps and missing persons photos. There's a lot of (overly) zealous wiki editors out and I have been struggling to keep ahead of unprompted deletions and copyright violation flags for files that I believe are free use exemptions or properly attributed even though they get flagged. Still trying to get this working.

Picture keeps getting deleted even though attribution given

@Racconish:, what is the exact reason that https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Highway_of_Tears_Corridor.png gets deleted? It takes effort to attempt to properly attribute this that I have to redo each time without an accurate explanation. The history log at Highway of Tears says that it fails the license review, but this is in error because there are similar images in wiki commons that are allowed to stay. Here is a similar page using a photo derived using the exact same mapping site OpenStreetMap, and the attribution/license that they use is the same one that I used for the image that was deleted in error: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:OpenStreetMap_homepage_2018_en.png

Can you please weigh in?

Custom signature fix needed

Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error, specifically formatting tags that are in the wrong order.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:

1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)

Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:

1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
2. Change the signature as shown below, or make other edits to make the signature appear how you want it to appear.
3. Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.
