IP range block edit

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

The IP you are blocking is a VPN (a paid one at that, so I doubt it's particularly popular with vandals and trolls). I move around a lot and tend to use a lot of open wifi, so I need to use a VPN to secure my connection; I'm aware that Wikipedia allows secure connections, but unfortunately 95% of sites do not, and there is no way that I know of to selectively route specific connections through a VPN and not others. Is there any way you could unblock this IP range for only this particular account? That would allow me to edit pages while still blocking abusive edits from the same IPs, as well as making it extremely simple to block me if ever I were to abuse this ability. This block meets the criteria of being both not necessary - since allowing edits from this account would not facilitate damage or disruption - and not connected to any conduct on my part - since it is a blanket ban that was probably in place long before I signed up for this VPN service. Decline reason:

You seem to know quite a bit how this works for an account that has made no edits other than this one. A request like this coming from an established editor would be a different story. Declining for now unless you can come up with a more compelling reason to make an exception (assuming that what you are describing is possible).OhNoitsJamie Talk 19:48, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

I know "quite a bit about how this works" because I've been using (i.e. reading) Wikipedia since 2005 and took the time to read your page on appealing a block. I've made no other edits for the simple reason that I'm blocked from doing so - you've basically pinned me in a catch-22 situation: I can't get unblocked because I'm not an established editor, and I can't become an established editor because I'm blocked. As for reasons, I don't see what reason can be more compelling than the fact that this block is both completely unnecessary and unconnected to anything I've done; I'm not requesting that anonymous editing or account creation be enabled, so I don't see what harm could come of it. Accept reason:

I changed a few settings on your account; try to edit now. OhNoitsJamie Talk 00:22, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Another caveat; you're going to need to reveal what IP you want an exception to be made for. The links for "show active blocks" and "show autoblocks" show nothing. OhNoitsJamie Talk 21:16, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
It's not listed? That's odd. I really don't know then. I'm know my VPN has servers in several countries, and I'm pretty sure they use dynamic IPs, but if there's no block entry on here listing all of their IP ranges, then it's going to impractical to do anything about it. In that case, do you have any idea how I could exclude a specific program from going through a VPN (openVPN, if it matters)? I've tried Googling, but the few methods I've found are either extremely convoluted (running each app in its own VM) or require network configuration changes (not an option for public wifi). Suppose I could get used to editing over 3G...editing on iOS is a pain though. :-/ -Mojace (talk) 21:43, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
What message do you get when you try to edit? According to the autoblock docs, it should indicate what IP is being autoblocked]]. OhNoitsJamie Talk 22:12, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
It lists a specific block for 5.63.147.100 and a general block on the range 5.63.144.0/21, both of them incorrectly listed as open proxies. Also, since reconnecting to the VPN a few minutes ago (and likely being assigned a new IP), I find I'm no longer able to edit even my own talk page, which is not only bloody ridiculous (I had to type this on my phone - BTW, your mobile editing interface is utterly broken), but suggests that the blocking was done in an at least somewhat haphazard way. -Mojace (talk) 23:01, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Everything seems to be fine working now. Thank you. :-)

Glad I was able to help. Apologies for being a little suspicious initially. We get a lot of "tall tales" from "new" users, but in hindsight your initial request was reasonable and should have been granted more quickly. Cheers, OhNoitsJamie Talk 02:12, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
