I'm glad

...you're safe. I was worried when I heard about the mass shooting since you and I are the only to editors I know for sure to be in El Paso, but if you're out of town then you should be well clear of the shooting site. TomStar81 (Talk) 11:57, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, TomStar81 for checking in. It's still very scary. While I don't shop at that Walmart as often, I have shopped there a lot. It's awful to have so much violence in El Paso which is a rather quiet, safe and friendly city. I was so upset when I found out, but everyone I know is ok so far. I'm so grateful for that. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:29, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
I worked that night so I slept through the whole damn thing, only found out about it after I got into work and saw the city on CNN and Fox news. From there I went on to my discord page and found that everyone was talking to everyone, so that put me at ease initially, but it wasn't until they released the names of victims that I was sure I didn't know anyone caught up in the incident (thankfully...). TomStar81 (Talk) 15:21, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
It's crazy, TomStar81 that it happened here. But we always think it won't happen to us. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 20:30, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
  • As a non-American (nor English native) I'm always aware of the shootings in the US. We Europeans pray to those who are killed even non-Christians give the respect and will remember to those who fight against the death to stay alive. Sadly this wouldn't be the last shooting for sure unless the American government bans guns which never (probably) would happen. To those who were the victims of this traumatic event, rest in peace in our hearts. Cheers. CPA-5 (talk) 19:15, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
@CPA-5: I appreciate this. I do hope things change and maybe they can. A lot of younger people are unhappy about being afraid to go to school. We can hope things get better. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:07, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Yes indeed I understand that feeling even I cannot imagine how terrible it could be to happen here right now. Just read the local news here which state "Second shooting in Texas in a short time". The article was about the city of Odessa, Texas. The new shooting killed 5 people and injured 21 others. It did mention about El Paso (which killed 22 people and 24 others) and Dayton, Ohio where 9 people died in total 36 people died in such a short time. Personally I'm not (and wouldn't become) a political activist. The only kind of activist I would be is more sociality by expanding Wikipedia. But I never thought there were 36 people killed in a month time. It's time to stop this madness. The article also mentioned that in August Texas passed some new weapon laws. Which doesn't help Texas!!! Now more guns are allowed in specific areas. Like religious buildings and even orphanages. Are you serious Texas? That's the stupidest and dumbest idea I ever heard of. Cheers. CPA-5 (talk) 09:14, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
@CPA-5: you're right! The new Texas gun laws are stupid. I was in the US Army and we didn't leave weapons or ammo lying around. We controlled our access to weapons. The 2nd amendment crowd forget the part about the "well-regulated militia." An asshole with a bunch of guns isn't well-regulated! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:04, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Megalibrarygirl/Archives/2019,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Research

Hi MLG - I was hoping you could help me find (or point me in the direction) of the following: “The Tuesdee Testa Story.” Victoria Advocate 10 Mar. 1969: 1B - Thank you in advance (hope to see you in Boston) - Atsme Talk 📧 22:23, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

@Atsme: Here's the clip: The Tuesdee Testa Story. There's more in the Newspaper archives, so let me know if you want more. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:48, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
❤️ Thank you, Megalibrarygirl   I would very much appreciate as much as you can find!! - Atsme Talk 📧 17:56, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
  • Request: <--- there is a section about her with a photo that was published in the Baltimore Sun. The Wordpress section states that Tuesdee was: "...Dark Mirage’s regular exercise rider and buddy, the one who walked her, fed her and often groomed her." They are crediting her with the filly's turn-around after a defeat, and then going on to win the Acorn Stakes, the Mother Goose, and the Coaching Club American Oaks which comprised the original "Filly Triple Crown". Anything you can find that credits Tuesdee with Dark Mirage, and any win records, earnings or awards you can find for Tuesdee. Don't hesitate to let me know how I can return the favor. And for all your hard work, I will send a request to WMF to double your wages. 😄 Atsme Talk 📧 19:06, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
OK, I've got more stuff for you, Atsme. :)

Wow!! What a goldmine! Thank you so much! I'm on it!! Atsme Talk 📧 18:51, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Anytime, Atsme! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 20:12, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Stub contest

As you will have noticed, Sue, we are launching a three-month stub contest on 1 October. Although we have a WiR barnstar with laurels, it would be good to have some award images specifically for the contest's two sections, i.e. new stubs and enhanced stubs (or simply de-stubs). I have suggested recognizing the winners of each section for each of the three months. As you are good with images, you might like to design some for this contest. They could then be included as user boxes on the winners' user pages. You might find inspiration here.--Ipigott (talk) 07:37, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

@Ipigott: I'll see what I can come up with. I'll probably be able to do some work on it tomorrow at home where I have some graphics software. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:13, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
