How to write a Wikipedia article

edit

hi Markpedia1. I see you are having some trouble getting your article created. I wanted to give you some advice about how to write an article in Wikipedia.

1) forget everything you know about the company.

2) Remember that you are writing to educate people. To provide a reference - an enduring reference, that will make as much sense now, as 10 years from now. Not a promotional piece or brochure or "what's new". A reference article that is part of an encyclopedia. (If you are not clear what Wikipedia is for, please read WP:NOT)

3) read WP:RS and WP:INDY

4) Go out and find all the reliable, independent sources you can about the company. I am not talking about passing mentions, but sources that actually discuss the company. Get all of them, not just the good ones.

5) Read WP:Golden Rule and WP:NOTABILITY, and try to decide if you have enough independent, reliable sources, with which to create an article. If the answer is "no", you can stop there and save yourself and everybody else time. And if your boss or a client is asking you to write this you can tell them {According to Wikipedia policy we are not covered enough in what they call 'reliable sources" to have a Wikipedia article at this time") To go forward, you should have, oh three or four independent sources that really discuss the company. Assuming you have enough...

6) Go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Companies/Guidelines and read what they say there, about how to structure a Wikipedia article about a company.

7) Read the sources you have found (make yourself actually read them, although you know plenty about the company.) You have to let the sources guide you. Think about what they say. What do they give the most space to discussing? Whatever that is, should get the most space in the article. (This is what we call WP:WEIGHT)

8) Start writing the body of the article, summarizing the sources and following the sections suggested in the guideline, to the extent that you have sources for them. (it is ok to skip sections) Do not write anything that is not in a source. Add citations as you go, so you know that every sentence comes from one of the sources.

9) In terms of word choice, be super careful to write neutrallly. Think "vanilla", not "raspberry". Plain vanilla, no color. Your goal here is to educate, not sell.

10) When you are done writing, review it, and make sure that the WEIGHT reflects the weight given to various subjects in the sources.

11) now write the lead of the article, summarizing the stuff in the body. (see WP:LEAD.

12) add infobox, add any external links that you like (make sure to read WP:EL and especially WP:ELNO.)

When you are done with all that, you should have a well-sourced, NPOV, nonpromotional reference article about the company, that will get through AfC. I hope that makes sense! Jytdog (talk) 07:52, 21 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Shawn McNulty

edit

Hello Markpedia1,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Shawn McNulty for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. L337p4wn Talk to me! 06:49, 27 June 2016 (UTC) Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
