Conflict of Interest Disclosure edit

Due to recent questions about WP:COI/conflict of interest issues around a source document I've referenced in the Celtic Reconstructionism (CR) Wikipedia article, it seems appropriate that I disclose my connection to the The CR FAQ and the domain it is parked on. I am one of the co-owners of the domain paganachd.com. The domain was acquired specifically to host The CR FAQ and related articles. This is not a commercial or even non-profit enterprise. The sole purpose of the domain is to provide access to the collaboratively created document and directly related articles. I believe the The CR FAQ is a salient secondary source document for the CR article. If you have any questions regarding my relationship to the domain and document, please ask at the bottom of my talk page. (Note: I'm deliberately not using an external link to the site to avoid the appearance of driving traffic to the site.) --Pigman (talk • contribs) 01:03, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

A question, are you a co-author of the CR FAQ? Ekajati (yakity-yak) 01:09, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I was one of the co-authors. Most of my contributions to the work was logistical and administrative housekeeping of the CeltiWiki project but I contributed writing, editing, and research as well. --Pigman (talk • contribs) 01:27, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Rosencomet's Starwood Edits edit

The Undue Weight issue is pretty much the heart of the current Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Starwood/Evidence arbitration. You might want to keep an eye on it for when the arbitrators decide what to do. You are not the first to try to politely point out the problem. --Pigmantalk 22:04, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

My RfA edit

Word of thanks for Paul Pigman
Good morning (GMT time); I'd like to thank you for supporting, opposing, taking a neutral stance to, closing, suggesting I close or otherwise contributing to my recent RfA; unfortunately, I felt that although there were more support than oppose votes, the weight of the latter was too great for me to accept the promotion with so many not trusting me with the janitor's trolley -

I therefore decided to end my nomination prematurely. The feedback I received was invaluable, and I am striving to start afresh with all of the advice my fellow Wikipedians offered. In order to meet the aim of adapting to your advice, I've drew up a list of aims (located here) which I intend to follow from this point onwards. at my talk page where it will be graciously and humbly accepted. Once again, thank you and I do hope to bump into you around the encyclopedia!

Regards,
Anthonycfc [TC]

Don't hesitate to add to these - just drop me a message so I know!

Did rdSmith4 ever answer you about his evidence for my sockpuppets since he provided no proof & will not answer my requests? edit

Did he ever answer your request? I am thinking of filing an Arbitration request against him, since he will not acknowledge my requests. I don't think I will be around here much longer anyway, so I may as well go for broke. Sincerely, Mattisse 03:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kiarostami edit

Hi Paul

I am working on film director Abbas Kiarostami. The article have been copyedited several times. Still there might be some more need for copy editting. There might be problems that escape me. It is very kind of you if you could take a look at that. Thanks. Sangak 08:58, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pls read and think twice edit

Dear Sir, I am Dr. Mohammad Samir Hossain from Bangladesh. I was and still am too poor like my country. I was desperately searching for support for my research and seeing my desperate wish some educators from the so called non-accreditated university Bircham International University became too kind to buy me books and appove me 100% fund. I had to beg to many but got only one. So I jumped on my dream topic - Philosophy of Death and Adjustment and start working on the Impact of different philosophies on different bangladeshi people. I did it because in the science of death such research was never conducted, but if I can do or at least raise some point for it, may be some richer and more qualified people will find their interest in it and may proceed. My back ground thought was that remedy to many mental health problem might come out from this new branch. But who would raise me with it? Cause I did not have money even to buy papers or my daily food, let alone doing vast correspondences or take help from any accreditated university. Though fortunately I enrolled at Harvard Medical School with full waiver, but that was too small period for me to do any good job. Finally I thought may be Elisabeth kubler-Ross herself might find interest in it and togather we will proceed. But my luck did not support me, cause I found the news of her funeral on the very day I found her organization's web site. So temporarily my research work stopped upto which Bircham International University helped me. So till now I dream of proceeding more on the research with supports of knowledge from all over the world, and I do not even have a web site to introduce my thoughts. So the only light of hope became this free encyclopedia, and for reference I only had Bircham International University web site. So I desperately tried to promote the introduction of the university in this encyclopedia so that the research reference gets its better base. I know my letter is big and annoying, but sometimes we do annoying things for something better, and please believe me I tried to promote Bircham International University or any other that you all object, just to facilitate the birth of a new branch of a science. Please help me in every way, you do not need to ask me anything for editing or changing. If you all fail to help in a rational manner, I do not mind and will take it as a fate. I will see my reply through the condition of the article "Philosophy of Death and Adjustment". I will love to see this baby of mine alive, but if dead, I will follow the branch of science that I am holding on.

Pure Gold edit

Rosencomet, out of all the names and information and links you put in your post above, one was pure gold: The Cleveland Free Times article.[11] This is what is meant by third party sourcing. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, please read WP:V and WP:RS. --PigmanTalk to me 03:37, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, you'll find a link to that article in the Starwood Festival article in the reference section, and I've used it as a third-party citation several times. But like gold, such articles are rare. Reporters are usually not allowed to come to Neo-Pagan events (especially clothing optional ones, and with the psychedelia/entheogen connection besides) unless the organizers are VERY CONFIDENT that their intentions are honest and that they won't print candid naked pictures or misrepresent the participants as Satanists or some other crapola. We got lucky with Michael Gill. I hope the upcoming Scene article on WinterStar, due out on Wednesday, will not turn out to be fools gold. Here's his teaser on the Scene blog "C-Notes". [1]
As I said to Kathryn, there are few articles by reporters to describe individual rituals at Neo-Pagan events. Why do you pretend not to know this? You are both active in the community, and you both do a lot of research, so you must know how rare this is. But she seemed to be interested in the rituals and not just citations for them, so I gave her what I had handy. If she picks particular items she's interested in posting on the Starwood page or an individual's article, I'll be glad to help look for citations specific to them. (And I'll even send you a copy of that issue of the Cleveland Free Times with the pictures if you want; e-mail the address to ace@rosencomet.com attention Wiki Guy and I'll get it.) Sammuel Barlay edit

Although the name was misspelled, the first line of the article states he's a professional football player in Sierra Leone which a Google search and the existing article verify. I'm guessing this was a simple mistake, but please do a cursory Google search the next time you come across something you think should be prodded. Prodding articles on notable people can get you in problems that could easily be avoided. - Mgm|(talk) 11:06, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Would you like a project? edit

There is a project that desperately needs copy edit help (you being a professional) and I am not up to dealing with these folk. I am going to suggest you in my place (hope you don't mind) -- you may refuse, of course. Having a project and working with specific people, like me and my India copy editing and article writing, has been a wonderful mental uplift although I know nothing about India (but learning). I feel like you are way too hard on yourself and are not using the full range of your copy editing talents and this project surely would. Sincerely, Mattisse 12:18, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding suggested project edit

No, this is not India.

User:Salix alba and another editor who saw my comments on his talk page suggested this project to me because of an editing discussion I had with User:Salix alba. The articles in his field, Mathmetics, are in dire straits, endanger of losing their FA status etc. and User:Salix alba has much work to do. I know little about higher mathematics and but I have worked successfully on subjects about which I am uninformed -- editing articles in such a field can be very helpful to the articles as the editors tend to make assumptions that the general reader knows what is being said. An outside copy editor can clarify and improve the flow by insisting on having the editors spell out what they are saying, thereby allowing the article to be accessible to the general reader. I know that once I get editing, the subject matter doesn't matter. I get interested whatever it is. And User:Salix alba seems quite open to suggestions in organisation, wording etc., plus he is a nice guy and wants help. Anyway, just a suggestion. (I empathise with your state of mind right now.) Sincerely, Mattisse 19:29, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

P.S. If you took it on, I will offer to help you, if you would like. Mattisse 19:29, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, no. No verification of formula. That is all they spend their time doing instead of thinking about coherent articles. The suggestions I made were really simple, like A, B, C, D. organisation, or using a common term in a general article instead of a highly specialised one that math people might understand but put off the general public (like me). He is working on an article called "Addition" in his sandbox that he wants to be simple and appeal to the general public. He would appreciate help. Sincerely, Mattisse 20:28, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I read the discussion you generated on the Addition talk page. I think your involvement is going to work out very well. You are exactly what they need. (It's a big step that they are allowing you to fool with the first para!) Sincerely, Mattisse 17:40, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

WP:UW future? edit

Hi Paul Pigman,

Sorry for the blatant spam, but you have yourself down as interested at WikiProject user warnings WP:UW. There is a discussion on going here that might be of interest to you about the future of this project. There are two strawpolls on the talk pages and the second one is about the future of the WP:UW project. Now we have the end in sight we are looking at wrapping up the project and merging it with Template messages/User talk namespace WP:UTM and creating a one stop shop for all userspace templates. As you have yourself down as interested in this project we thought you may have some input on this issue, and would like you to visit the discussion and give any thoughts you may have on the matter. Sorry to hear your bowing out. Wierd how an apparently simple task can be so stressful, although I quite understand having struggled with such things myself. If your interested my best attempt at simple maths writing was at [[2]]. The idea there was to start from something the reader knows and generalises it. --Salix alba (talk) 19:09, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Human Universals edit

Re:User talk:Alastair Haines#Human Universals. I think you missed Human Universals#External links which verifies the few facts on that page. I think you also missed the link to Donald Brown, the author. You might like to use this verification that was provided to check that there's a couple of dozen links to that page (stub though it is). Donald Brown is famous in my professional subject area. I imaging others wouldn't know who he is, though, and they are less likely to if they have to search outside Wiki to find information about him. How much does the book cost? Where can you purchase it? If these things are not provided, how is something an ad? Keep up the good work. Cheers. Alastair Haines 22:30, 3 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Mr PigMan for your clarification at my home page. Further to your comments there, Donald Brown probably has hundreds of citations, if not thousands of citations in published literature in his field. I am aware of dozens from my own work alone. I'm sure he'd Google up OK too. He has retired and left a large legacy in print. I'm new to Wiki, so I don't know how much spam you get, good on you for blasting the stuff. My handfull of contributions will always be "false positives". I'm leaving stubs in a few places that I'll get back to as I have liesure. As far as I was concerned, the important thing regarding the Brown entries was providing the link to the list of his universals, for which he is most famous. The people who find the page, will be people who know his work, and are checking what Wiki has on him. People who've never heard of him, won't be coming to the page to check if he's famous enough for them to learn about, if you get my point. It took me a few months as a Wiki reader before I edited anything. It took me six months before I created an article. It's only a matter of time before someone who knows more about Brown than me fleshes out the article. If there's no stub, there's no invitation for people to edit. We don't say anything false, defamatory or even controversial about him, there's just the bare minimum to identify that he's not the jazz musician, basketball player, economics professor, embryology professor etc. I've also created a Donald Brown (disambiguation) page. This too is a stub, we don't have articles for those people, maybe they'll never have sufficient notariety, however, my theory is I'm just making it easier for people in future by leaving a trace of the minimal facts I have, and opening and organizing the entries. Sorry about this essay, I guess it's just a Wiki way of saying, "Howdy doody." ;) Anyway, thanks again for making sure I'm aware of what's going on at Wiki. I'm aware of a lot of policies, they're all pretty much common sense. "False positives" are better than no interactin at all. Cheers. Alastair Haines 23:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
You are a star Mr Pigman, more power to you! I really like the Wiki style of doing things. Pushing citation does have to be the way forward -- it addresses the core issue of so many policies. My suspicion is we need to give people some space if something's not controversial, 'cause they are donating the time taken to fetch the citations. However, when uncited stuff causes coniptions and edit wars, citations are the magic that can settle things. I'm sure you guys have your finger on the pulse. Thanks for this great Wiki project. Cheers mate. Alastair Haines 02:10, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

college music update query edit

hello!

Just responding to your response re my entry for College Music Update.

You're right that College Music Update does not bring up huge amounts of Google entries, other than the CMU website, but that is probably because people in the music industry generally know the service as the CMU Daily, though it's official name is College Music Update - in much the same way everyone calls the NME the NME even though it's official name is New Music Express.

I have also got together a number of references to College Music Update / CMU Daily from established music industry / music business / music college websites which I can include.

As I've been away and missed your tag i think the entry has been deleted. I can put it back up with the references and perhaps under the name CMU Daily rather than College Music Update - but wanted to check what you think before I do so - so you don't think I'm just ignoring your comments and trying to upload the same entry!

Let me know what you think

Question, please help! edit

Hi! You left a message for me about tagging an entry about "Chris Bailey." I would certainly recall if I'd written such an article. It was probably something I edited exactly because it was NOT notable. I can't find the history of the "Chris Bailey" page, do you know how to do that?

Question about a "proded" item edit

Pigman,

I just found you put a prod on a page I'd done. I looked at the Wikipedia rules and see why you did it, and would be glad to put the item on the dictionary site. However, is it possible to recover the original so I don't have to do it over?

Thanks.

Sale, Greater Manchester FAC edit

Hi. I'm sorry to bother you, but as a LoCE member, I just wondered if you would be willing to have a look through the Sale, Greater Manchester article. It is currently a Featured Article Candidate and needs a copy-edit for grammar by someone who hasn't yet seen it. Any other ways to improve the article would also be welcome. Thank you very much, if you can. Epbr123 13:17, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Irish articles assessments edit

It seems that the assessment of Irish articles has fallen off the radar but recently Flowerpotman, Sarah777 and I have been doing a little work on this as well as actually classifying articles (actually Sarah has done the most work). Anyway, you are listed as a member of the WikiProject hence this post.

  • The first thing that needs doing is to work on the WikiProject template. Actually there are two templates both of which get recorded by the assessment statistics bot that collects the ratings and creates the listings in the category Category:Ireland articles by quality. The two project templates are {{Irelandproj}} listed on the main project page and {{WikiProject Ireland}} listed on the assessment page—the first allows both quality and importance rating as well as nesting but no reviewer comments, while the second allows quality rating and comments but the importance does not seem to work and comments are not included. This needs to be fixed, so we use one that works fully—can you help?
  • The next thing is to decide if we just let editors assess as they wish or to create some criteria or guidelines for rating the quality and importance of the Irish articles. Personally I am in favour of some guidelines—some will be easy to decide while others are a little more complex. What do you think?
  • Some projects make lists of articles for assessment while other go after groups of articles by category. What should we do? A mixture of both by using a "To do list"?
  • As of the last assessment statistics bot run on Sunday, August 20, only 1462 articles have been tagged, of which 1156 have been assessed for quality but 660 of these have no importance value.
  • Besides these 1462 there must be hundreds more untagged articles that should be tagged when we get the template issue mentioned above fixed.

We are not bad in our assessments but some projects have all their articles assessed while others are lacking more than we are. We can really use a few active editors to bring assessments to the fore. Please reply on the assessment talk page as to what you can do. Please help out. ww2censor 17:30, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
