Map request

edit

Hi!

You seem to be a cartographer with an interest in Africa... Do you think you could help Alinor and me with a map for the African Economic Community? The situation is rather complicated, please take a look at Talk:Trade bloc, close to the very bottom of the page. Thanks!   Nightstallion 09:22, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Are you currently busy, or is there some other reason why you have not replied? Thanks either way! —Nightstallion (?) 10:32, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, sorry for replying this late. I'm quite busy currently with other graphical work these days, but I'm willing to work on the map in the near future. The discussion on Talk:Trade bloc was a bit misty to me; if you could give a more detailed explanation of what you think you need, I can draft a proposal. — mark 18:32, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
No problem, I was just wondering. Maybe the table at User:Nightstallion/sandbox clears matters up a bit? I'd say you needn't mark the AU countries in any way, maybe attach a special note to Morocco. If I can help in any way, just tell me. Thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 19:19, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Sesotho

edit

I thought that Sesotho language (edit · talk · links · history · watch) needed some work done on it, so I developed the sections on the sounds of the language. However, my sources and the article were a little out of step, and I would appreciate it if you would correct any glaring mistakes that I have made. Thanks. --Gareth Hughes 18:14, 7 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for the late response. The sections on sound look good (although Sesotho words exemplifying the phonemic contrasts would be nice). The rest of the article needs a lot of work, by the way. — mark 09:58, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Muhammad Awzal

edit

You put in a unicode h-mark in Muhammad Awzal - can you explain what the point of that is? I've written a couple of articles using the name Muhammad, or a variation - should I be putting that in the others too? GRuban 14:44, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... I put it there because that's how Van den Boogert uses it consistently. However, I am aware that the name 'Muhammad' is most commonly written without any further diacritics; that's why I didn't move it to Muḥammad Awzal. So the answer would be no; I think we should stick to common usage. — mark 14:52, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
And I wouldn't mind if you removed it from the Awzal article. Probably I was just being too anal-retentive. — mark 14:56, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
No, I'll leave it in, but won't expand to other Mohammeds/Muhammads/... . That the main reference uses it that way is a perfectly fine reason to have it that way. I have to admit, I haven't read the Boogert, just built from Web sources. GRuban 14:25, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your welcoming message. I'm not an English speaker, so my contributions will be very limited. As far as the article "Muhammed Hawzal" is concerned, if you'd like to expand it, you can find something in the corresponding it.wiki article. Bye.--Vermondo 14:43, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yorùbá

"Yorùbá" is the form used in most if not all of the African sources (that is, books and papers on African philosophy) that I have. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:52, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is always a problem when questions of "most common usage" come up, because there are often different most-common usages in different fields. My own approach is to use the more accurate form, with plenty of redirects to make sure that readers find what they're looking for. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:38, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was writing my explanation of the article when you slipped in and posted -- before I could save the page -- why it might not be Wiki-appropriate. Please go take a look; I think you'll be satisfied by my reasoning. You must have seen the new piece in those few minutes before I wrote the note I expected would begin the Discussion page. Posting to you here to bring your attention to this; will continue on article's own discussion page if needed. -- Lisasmall 09:53, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Japanese sound symbolism

edit

Hi Mark! About Talk:Sound symbolism, don't worry. On the contrary, I'm afraid my post sounded like I was offended, while I wasn't. Actually, I'm no expert in Japanese and I have troubles with my gitaigo's and giongo's on a daily basis, so I'm sure there must be lots of things in that section that could be improved. As I said, I have nothing against a complete rewrite of the article. I'm sorry I can't be of much help. Cheers! — AdiJapan  17:20, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

My pictures look odd

edit

Hi Mark! Could you help me with something? I'm still trying to find my feet with the more complicated computery bits :) I uploaded the new bank notes series Rand (currency), but they only seem to appear when you click on the old picture (which is now stretched to the new picture's size!) And then when you click on the 'download hi res', it comes up with the old pic again! What've I done wrong? Many thanks bud! Al, Joziboy

You've done nothing wrong; it was a caching issue. Downsized versions of pictures are not generated on the fly, but they are generated once in a while and then cached on the image server. I always fix such errors by changing the thumb size by one pixel or so, which prompts the software to generate a new (and therefore updated) version of the thumbnail. That's what I did just now, and it seems to have fixed the issue. Lose your browser cache (Ctrl+F5) if it still doesn't work. — mark 15:40, 25 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Cool thanks, it all looks fine now. Cheers for the help :) Joziboy 25 Feb 2006, 20:36 UTC

Dont not delete my contirbution

edit

Please do not delete my contribution.. Let me say this most of the contributor tend to show Nigeria, in a bad light, but I am interested in making people see the other side and ask themself question, if all they know is correct. You deleting my contribution only destroy the imagine of nigeria. I am here to make the imagine the rest of the world see my country, to be correct and prefect. Puting picture and information is the best method, and I would continue to do so, i please beg of you, please stop deleting my contribution. We are already in a hole by bad press, i just want to use wiki to make the image better. Bad image bring poverty, and my people are already poor of bad information, please do not make my people poor more than what they are already . we need investment, people are living below a $1 a day. we beg you. Please help us and stop deleting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nigeriamajor (talkcontribs)

Thanks for responding. I sympathize with your goals, but you have chosen the wrong way to pursue them. In no way it can be a good thing to add the same two external links to tens (or hundreds) of articles related to Nigeria. That is plain spamming, whether you have a commercial interest in it or not. Please familiarize yourself with Wikipedia policy and try to contribute content, always taking in mind or neutral point of view-policy, of course. If I can be of any help, please say so. — mark 08:14, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nigeriamajor: spamming, please define, because from what I know is spamming, this does not fit that defination. I have ready all the policy, nothing talk about it.. If you think Wikipedia is not a powerful tool to help, I do not believe so, even the Minister of Information in Nigeria, talk about what Wikipedia is doing to better the imagine of Nigeria. So wikipedia reach alot of people, Just because of that Picture. Can you imagine a minister taken interest in Wikipedia just because of Nigeria picture. This may not mean much to you, because you dont care.. Your people are not Involve, I am assuming you white, if it was a White society that need your help, will you turn your back.. ASK YOUR SELF THIS QUESTION, and if you can say in your Heart, that this people should die just because they are black, then I think you to check yourself. Will you allow a white society to die of poverty? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nigeriamajor (talkcontribs)

Thanks for responding. Wow, I do not think I have been accused of something like this before. I do think that my contributions to Wikipedia contradict your accusation quite strongly; please see for yourself what kind of societies I tend to care about most. If you look closely, you might find that I have contributed to quite some Nigerian topics.
As I said above, I sympathize with your goals, but you have chosen the wrong way to pursue them. It is just not a good idea to add the same external link to hundreds of articles related to Nigeria; several helpful people have pointed you to relevant policies on your talk page so I'm not going to repeat that. Once again, please don't assume that I don't care; you have really, really picked to wrong person to accuse of racist motives. — mark 23:19, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Who made you God on wikipedia.. their is an africa proverb that says if you can not contribute, dont destroy, and you look more like someone who destroy. I have found more than ten multiple external link on several page on wiki. while dont you go after them. Who made you the police of wiki.. mind your own busy.. You see picture sell. Picture speak more than word or anything written.. Have you ever been to Nigeria before, what do you know about Nigeria, that you want to contribute, why dont you leave Nigeria pages for Nigerian to judge.. You really sound like a KKK member. Why do you already want to bring down poor africa... dont you have a soul to judge you.. HAve you ever been to nigeria in your life? Please do not delete again, puting external link is not spamming.. why dont you check your dictionary...

if you think you are the king of External links, why dont you put down all the external links on Wikipedia, and call them spamming. Is it because most of the links are from White User.. if you really hate external links and you know that you are not racist, please put down all external links on Wikipedia........... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.195.84.54 (talkcontribs)

It seems like you deliberately misconstrue what I am saying. I do not see any reason to talk further. Go away. — mark 08:18, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kabylie

Hi again! Would you mind keeping an eye on Kabylie - some Berberist fantasizer is repeatedly substituting made-up population figures, a map nearly doubling the area where Kabyle is actually spoken, and a totally unofficial flag. Thanks, - Mustafaa 12:04, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mark, thank you very much for your advice, which has been priceless and allowed me to create my first wiki page (http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dzie%C5%84_steka_i_loda - actually, as you can see it's a translation). As to our original discussion on Talk:Cognitive_linguistics, I do believe CL is gaining more and more momentum and I fell that:
"...refers to the school of linguistics, currently on the rise, that views..."
would be uncontroversial.

(In reply to my question over at User talk:Yaledog). Well, Yaledog, I don't feel strongly about it either way (whether it stays or not), so I'll leave it. But expect others to revert the blanking, because it looks like vandalism. Also, subjects normally do not get to decide whether they are included or not — their notability, and the verifiability of the information, does. Let's just see what happens. Dogon remove

edit

Hi Mark, I saw the remove request on the Dogon, but I don't even understand the question. Is it just an adminstrative thing? Before answering I would like to know what this means. Could you explain it please? --User:AAM | Talk 08:46, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

The confusion is understandable. It's just that over at WP:RM, someone has requested to move Dogon people to Dogon a few days ago; but he forgot to announce this request at Talk:Dogon people. So yes, it's just an administrative thing. It can be easily reverted, too, if it turns out not to be not a good idea. By the way, I should mention that such a request is meant to provoke discussion, not just a vote, because, as they say, voting is evil. Hope this helps! (BTW, it's a move request, not a remove request.) — mark 08:55, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's absurd; it was made by taking every wilaya where there is a significant Kabyle minority or majority and lumping them all together. It corresponds neither to the historic region termed "Kabylie" nor to the area where Kabyle is spoken. - Mustafaa 10:34, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

African Linguistic maps

edit

My website has been removed from external links, because my homepage is useless and was not appropriated. How to remove from the black list my address? This site shows thousands languages on map for each African country There is a huge amount of work done on maps. No reason to do that. It's been accepted to another language www.muturzikin.com/carteafrique.htm Zorion the 10 of March 2006

Hi, the reason I removed your link was that it was very generic; too generic to be included in the specific articles Kenya and Berber languages. I would not remove your link if you added it to African languages. — mark 09:23, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

petroleum in Nigeria

edit

hi Mark, i've noticed you are a pretty consistent contributor to Nigeria-related articles and i am curious as to whether you'd like to lend a hand with the Petroleum in Nigeria article i've been working on. it was actually posted on the ARRNB by Wizzy but im making another attempt at recruiting users for a barn-raising effort, mainly because there's a lot of information available and it could be a fantastic article if done correctly. if you're interested Remember Saro-Wiwa.com has lots of great resources along with anything listed under references for the page itself. any help is appreciated, the article has stagnated largely because ive been overwhelmed by the scope of the topic. thank you, and i hope i'm not being presumptious with any of this. also feel free to link the article to anyone you think may want to get involved! thanks again. --gozar 22:26, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I actually took action and requested it to be removed, but forgot to say so here. Now I have you at m:Talk:Spam blacklist accusing me that I don't want your maps to be linked to for the petty reason that I make maps myself, too. I never would do that. African linguistics

Hey! I'm User:ZyXoas and I'm an amateur African linguist. I noticed you've been fighting BIAS against African linguistics. I can confidently help with Bantu linguistics and concepts. I'm the guy who wrote almost all of Sesotho and I'll be more than happy to help you or anyone who's willing to improve it. Yes, I know it sucks, but I'm writing this on a 3g phone and I can't currently edit large articles. If you have any questions at all about Bantu linguistics do not hesitate to leave me a message on my talk page and I'll advise you to the best of my knowledge. Note that if you reply to this message (on my talk page) you'll have to create a blank section on your own talk page otherwise I may not be able to write my response. Unicode-compliant browsers

edit

Hi,
I'm intrigued by your claim (at Evidentiality) that specifying a font can make special characters display correctly in browsers that don't fully support Unicode. Could you elaborate? In the meantime, I've re-removed all of the formatting which, I presume, is really just eye candy. I've placed your talk page on my watchlist, so you may reply right here, to keep the discussion all in one place. --Smack (talk) 06:18, 24 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yep, the extensive font declaration maximizes the chance that special IPA-characters are displayed correctly in MS Internet Explorer. I normally work in FireFox and have all kinds of fonts installed anyway, but when visit Wikipedia from my university library (on a terminal with IE), characters in the extended IPA range only display when the appropriate fonts are declared. There is even a template for this (which might be the best thing to use in that table): {{unicode}}. Hope this helps, — mark 07:38, 24 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
How does that template work? I'm confused. --Smack (talk) 01:16, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
What you place {{unicode|HERE}} is wrapped up in a span tag with the CSS class "Unicode"; that class is defined in MediaWiki:Common.css. — mark 08:00, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I tried to use the template in the article; did I do it right?
Related question. Could you explain why that massive font attribute made the table text several points larger than the article text? --Smack (talk) 22:29, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yep, that's the way to do it (though I can't check how it looks in IE right now).
I suspect that the font declaration makes some browsers pick a font that is just a notch larger. Otherwise I can't think of any reason. — mark 06:59, 28 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your offer,but...

Dear Mark Dingemanse

Thank you very much for your message. I apologize for not being able to write sooner even if I'm poor at English. To be sure, I drew these maps, but it is imitating from Effah-Gyamfi 1995 as you knew. If you have doubt whether you can use these maps under the GFDL,I suggest you draw maps in yourself. If you would like to use these maps, you would have responsibility for use of it.I’m positive I can use these maps under the GFDL,but I’m afraid it is my fault. I respect your effort in Wikipedia and you wrote many fantastic articles about african history. I have no intention in any inconvenience this may cause you but your understanding is sincerely appreciated.

My best regards Siyajkak 01:31, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your response! Don't worry about the delay, it doesn't matter. (It took me quite some time to recollect when and I where asked a question about maps based on Effah-Gyamfi 1995, but then I remembered that two months ago I followed a newly added interwikilink at Begho to ja:ベゴー, where I found some maps which you uploaded; I then asked something about the license on your talk page.)
Maybe it would be OK to use the map, citing the source, of course; but I have to think about it and maybe ask others for their thoughts. Thanks for your response, in any case! Kind regards, — mark 07:57, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

8 days ago (that's 2 times 4, or 2 to the power of 3, or the value of the first perfect number plus the value of the lowest positive prime number, or the mean between the number of factors of the oldest and most well-known amicable numbers pair) I asked if you could perhaps comment on what I had written on Talk:Bantu languages. You've still not replied to my request. Say something, Mark, even if it's just "hey! Leave me alone and get a life". Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 08:28, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh boy... you should know that I'm trying to finish my thesis before the end of april. That's why I haven't made any substantial edits lately (it's only my watchlist-addiction that brings me here once in a few days). So that's why I didn't feel like diving into comparative Bantu. A few notes, then, since you're asking: it looks good on the face of it, but what's problematic about it is that sources are missing, hence it's not really verifiable. Also, if we're going to put this up in an article on the Bantu languages (which I think is a good idea eventually), examples from all over the Bantu area would be very nice. I believe that a more widely used term for what you call 'nasal compounds' is 'prenasalization', i.e. 'prenasalized consonants'.
On a sidenote, while I agree that for a purist, Kintu might be the best term, it's simply a fact that virtually all comparative bantuists (indeed, all that I know of, including Schadeberg, Möhlig, Meeuwis, Guthrie, Hyman, Hombert) use 'Bantu'. But I think you knew that already.
Gotta fly... — mark 10:01, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, I stumbled across him and another user Anwar saadat uploading dozens of unlicensed Bollywood images, editing and counter-editing each others contributions, and next thing we have a fake barnstar rush on our hands. Very unusual! Budgiekiller 16:47, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh.

Sorry. I didn't know about your thesis (on?). The source is Text Book of Southern Sotho Grammar by Doke and Mofokeng. I guess the fact that I have not read the original source is problematic. I know that everyone says "Bantu" but these linguists say some of the stupidest things sometimes, like in a paper I read today where a certain Khoali (note the obvious Lesotho Sesotho spelling) is cited as giving things like "go ja" as Sesotho verbs!! Anyway, sorry to bother you - I'll wait. Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 21:35, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Egyptian Arabic

edit

Hi Mark! Do you mind taking a look at Egyptian Arabic? There is an edit conflict with a user who's been on Wikipedia for less than a week and is already engaged in an edit war over a simple "language vs. dialect" dispute. I have attempted to reach consensus on the talk page, but he dismisses any sources by what he calls "foreigners" (i.e. non-Egyptians) or "Christians". He constantly questions my integrity which makes it difficult to continue the discussion. I'd appreciate your input. — Zerida 22:25, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

It looks like things have cooled down after being warned by admin — Zerida 21:18, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Roylee and not Roylee

edit

Hi Mark. You seem to have my IP address confused with that of someone named Roy Lee. That is not me. You gave "me" a warning. I, by the way, have never edited or created a wikipedia article. I did contribute to a discussion one time. I forget what it was about. I appreciate Wikipedia as an intellectual commons. I am a recent Ph.D. in history and I am also a believer in the way that verifiable citations can increase the usefulness of wikipedia. Lastly, I am not extremely net-savy, so I am not sure how someone apparently pirated my IP address or you somehow confused his with mine. Nevertheless, I am being totally honest about this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.241.216.249 (talkcontribs)

I have removed the message for 'Roylee' — it was almost a year old and it was not aimed at you. As it turns out, this person has edited from the same dynamic IP adress as you are doing now (it might be in the same building, or it might be switched by the Internet Service Provider; your adress certainly has not been pirated or something like that).
I am sorry for the confusion and I totally believe that you're honest. Thanks for your message, and if I can help you with anything regarding Wikipedia or editing here, be sure to let me know. Kind regards, — mark 12:53, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Edit: follow this link to see the contributions that have come from your current IP. See here for more background information on the Roylee thing, if you want. Chances are that you have another IP adress next time you check back here, so I'm copying the message from your talk page to mine. — mark 13:11, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mark - from the Argan page and sources cited therein (want them copied across?). Also been there, seen it (uploading a pic soon) - MPF 18:03, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, copying them would be fine. On second thought, maybe wikilinking to argan is enough. It's just that I didn't want the article to give the impression that the argan bit came from the sources mentioned, which are strictly ethnographic.
And a picture - very nice! Thanks for responding, — mark 18:10, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
