Declare any connection edit

Hello MSmuzynski. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have a financial stake in promoting a topic, such as the edit you made to Draft:Ice Castles, LLC. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially egregious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a black hat practice.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists, and if it does not, from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:MSmuzynski. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=MSmuzynski|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. If you are being compensated, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, please do not edit further until you answer this message. --Worldbruce (talk) 04:06, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Worldbruce, Thanks for adding insight! I am actually NOT being paid by the company. For full transparency, I worked for them last season, but I am not currently affiliated or contracted with Ice Castles or being compensated to create a Wikipedia page for them. I'm a former journalist, so I totally understand the need for disclosure of any bias or conflict of interest. I'm sure it's rare that someone creates a Wikipedia article without compensation, but I'm doing so simply because I want to say I've contributed to Wikipedia. Ice Castles was the subject I chose because it was the most notable topic that I could think of that didn't already have an existing Wikipedia page. Plus, I knew a lot about the attraction and company, having worked with them last season. With all of that said, should I declare that I worked with them last year? Thanks for all of your help!

Wikipedia's communication mechanism is unusual. If you want a particular editor to notice something you post (other than on their talk page) you need to do two things:
  1. use a template such as {{U}} or {{ping}} with their name, AND
  2. sign your post with four tildes ~~~~.
It's also the convention to start each reply indented one level deeper than what you're replying to, an effect achieved by starting with one more colon than the previous post.
If you proceed with the Ice Castles article, my advice would be to declare your former employee status on your user page. I would go further and suggest that you set Ice Castles aside for several months and edit other things. Creating a new article is the most frustrating, time consuming, and thankless task a new Wikipedian can take on. There are millions of other ways to improve the encyclopedia - less than 1% of articles are rated good or better by Wikipedians. Links in the welcome box above can give you ideas of ways to help. The more editing of existing articles you do, the deeper your understanding of Wikipedia's workings will become, and the easier it will be when you return to the challenge of creating a new article.
You write I'm sure it's rare that someone creates a Wikipedia article without compensation. In fact it's the other way around. I think less than 1% of articles are created by paid contributors. Almost every editor you'll ever encounter here is a volunteer who would not accept payment for the work they do. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:09, 18 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
{{Worldbruce}} Thank you for the advice and tips. I'm still trying to get the hand of Wikipedia's proper formatting and best practices. It's definitely been a valuable learning experience! I will look for some other ways to contribute to the encyclopedia before taking on an entire article for now. I will also disclose that I'm a former contractor for Ice Castles on my user page, in the event I ever go back and take a stab at the draft again. Thanks again for your help!
