AIV

MER-C, you've done enough counter-vandalism to know AIV isn't for reporting on inappropriate usernames. We can block inappropriate usernames if they continue editing and someone complains and/or an admin notices, but if it's a single-purpose account used to make nonsense pages or whatever, then there's not much point in pulling the fire alarm that is AIV.--Kchase T 09:37, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's the only way that works with the required speed which I have access to, and the other admins don't seem to mind. In all the hundreds of inappropriate usernames I've reported, no-one's complained, except for the occasional error. MER-C 09:49, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have no problem with it as I dont see anywhere mroe suitible. ViridaeTalk 09:58, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's policy: "However, administrators may block inappropriate usernames on sight. Reports of obviously offensive usernames should be posted at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism.". yandman 10:00, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

(lots of edit conflicts) See WP:ANI#WP:BITE_Case for more info. I should have pointed you that way at my first posting. Some of the comments near the bottom explain in more detail the point, I'm making, which is that it's really confrontational and discouraging to be blocked before you've even started editing. I'm not saying you shouldn't report "User:death to niggers and jews", but the milder one's aren't too terribly important.
On a different note, many wikipedians, myself included, spend too much time telling others what they are doing wrong and not enough giving proper encouragement. MER-C, I've seen you constantly putting in good work at AFD and tireless counter-vandalism. For that, sir, I salute you. Have a barnstar.--Kchase T 10:04, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  The Barnstar of Diligence
I award you this barnstar for your tireless and prolific contributions to AFD, including extensive and knowledgeable use of policies and guidelines.Kchase T 10:04, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I've shared my opinion at WP:ANI, what I said in a nutshell was that our username policies need to be more prominent when people sign up to create an account. MER-C 12:54, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome. I need to go read the username policy in depth, again, so I don't leave any more wrong and initially condescending messages on the talk pages of valued editors. I apologize for that. It was the wrong way to start. I saw your ANI post. Good idea. Hopefully it will get implemented.--Kchase T 21:49, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Carphone Warehouse, a customer's perspective

Why were the recent changes reverted?

I mean: What is wikipedia and the internet if not a way to increase accountability and responsability for one's actions? Including those of large companies.

Thanks, DV —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.109.90.183 (talkcontribs)

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It is neither a blog nor a soapbox. MER-C 10:31, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Maybe the format and the tone was inappropriate. But the company's malpractice merits some form of mention, I'll leave that up to you for now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.109.90.183 (talkcontribs)

nn-Warn headers

Have you noticed the automatic header has gone when you place a nn-warn notice on a user's page? See User talk:Fazayal for examples - I manually inserted my header in afterwards. Bubba hotep 10:52, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's been on and off for the past month or so, with the last revert yesterday. I can't be stuffed changing my monobook to fix this and I can't be bothered fixing it afterward as it's a waste of time. Let's hope they make their minds up, so I only have to change it once. MER-C 12:39, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've seen the Template talk page, but it doesn't seem to say why they keep changing it - and the edit summaries are equally unrevealing. Ho hum, we only work here, eh? :) Bubba hotep 12:53, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Looks like they are going to make the header an optional parameter. The discussion is at WT:CSD, right at the bottom. MER-C 13:02, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cheers for that. I've added my vote. Bubba hotep 13:08, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rollback

Fixed. Voice-of-All 05:05, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. MER-C 06:02, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've just changed by monobook to incorporate this script instead of the previous one which has fallen over since the addition of the "undo" button (had me stumped yesterday, must admit. Just getting used to the differences (all good). Just one thing you may be able to clarify - when warning a user with the "t", "t2", etc. button, I take it you have to manually add the page name into the header (or the subst:test section) to reference which page the vandalism refers to? Bubba hotep 11:33, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

(deindent for code) No you don't. The raw output of the script is:

Regarding edits made during    (UTC)
~~~~
The buttons, from left to right, are test1, test2, test3, bv, blank, blank3, spam and spam2. I have an additional spam4im button but only because I do a lot of stuff related to spambots and corporate vanity accounts and a nn-warn button because of the large numbers of pages I tag for burnination. MER-C 11:40, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah, do you use IE. Because I use Firefox and it doesn't open the talk page after the rollback. Bubba hotep 12:00, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's most likely popup-blocked. I use Firefox too, because I wouldn't contemplate installing Windows on this computer. MER-C 12:13, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Looks slightly embarrassed and turns off pop-up blocker Yes, that will be it! Plus it didn't help that my PC is running like a bag of bollocks today. Cheers for that, as usual. :) Bubba hotep 12:41, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
editing Saeed Khan Rangeela
Your recent deletion of an article on Saeed khan Rangeela is vandalism. The article was written by a renowned newspaper of Pakistan. You can also verify the information by google search on Saeed Khan Rangeela. Your editing is false and full of insufficient reliable published sources independent of the subject. Moreover, the emphasis should be on Saeed Khan Rangeela and not on some Unknown looser Jamil Khan who have no record of anysort. I hope you don't mess up with my eidting again. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by ANoreen (talkcontribs) 17:12, 20 December 2006.
You copy and pasted that text from another website. This constitutes a copyright violation and must be removed in accordance with our copyright policy. In fact, what you did may constitute vandalism, not what I did. And it's your responsibility to verify the information, not mine. I'll only "mess up with [your] editing" if you don't follow our policies and guidelines.
So why don't you think about what you did, instead of what I did for once? MER-C 02:16, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Splatterball
Hi! I noticed that you tagged the above article for speedy deletion, but that the article did not satisfy the criteria for db-bio. I'd just like to suggest that you avoid tagging articles for speedy deletion unless they meet the very letter of the tag you're using. In this case, Splatterball did indeed assert notability: that's enough to avoid speedy deletion.
The reason for this is simply that CAT:CSD is meant to be populated with articles that administrators can make a snap decision about, without needing to research the article. When the article in question claims that "Splatterball was a popular paintball-style online game", but the speedy tag says that it has no assertion of notability, the administrator needs to spend time researching the matter and making a decision -- or, more usually, tagging it with prod or taking it to WP:AFD instead. It's a waste of time, but one that's easily fixed by simply being really, really pedantic. ;)
Finally, I'll add that yes, I believe the article should be deleted. However, it'd be out of process for me to actually carry through with that, so it couldn't be done: just be absolutely sure that the article is exactly described by the speedy tag, to save a little time down the line. Thanks! Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 11:56, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
"Popular", like many other phrases, is just a meaningless buzzword that I've seen countless times before. I wouldn't call it an assertion of notability unless some actual numbers are provided. MER-C 12:49, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oops, you did it again?
I'll give you this much: you're not slow in passing judgement! Next time, do please at least refer to the discussion page before you make claims of vandalism. Otherwise it might appear that your trolling around looking to boot someone for no good reason... Thanks, Uptional 08:52, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oops, my mistake. Apologies. I've reverted the warnings on your talk page. Unfortunately, due to time and connection speed constraints, I can't check talk pages, but wholesale removal of content without a note pointing to the talk page are pretty dodgy. MER-C 12:25, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Pomassl Edits
I believe I have satisfied the concerns outlined in the 'speedy deletion' category for the Franz Pomassl article, namely referencing how the musician is 'notable' with regards to 1990s electronic music and musicians. I'd appreciate it if you would review your edits and remove the notice, or provide additional guidance to resolve this. Thanks. Alex 09:36, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Since the article no longer meets any of the CSDs, I've removed the tag. MER-C 09:39, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hello MER-C, you tagged the image with db-g1. But I do not agree with the tag and I have removed the same. The image could be useful for some article or user page. The uploader has already released the image in public domain. It would be better to discuss it with uploader before tagging with patent-nonsense. User:Arria Belli
Thanks for your concern with the prodding, but I just changed my username from Marialadouce to this one (Wikipedia:Changing username proves it). I have since restructured the whole userpage, dividing it into three parts, because it was incredibly cluttered and awful to look at. That page was in the main namespace, not in the place we'd expect to find it. I've moved it to User:Arria Belli/Navelgazer, however the resultant redirect should be deleted in accordance with CSD R2. Merry Christmas! MER-C 12:21, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your time; I just asked my adoptive admin to move my old userpage to my new one so I could keep all the old edits. Updating WP:DEP
I have at my disposal the means to update WP:DEP with a dump dated November 30 2006. The downside of this is that it is huge, and slightly out of date and thus full of redlinks. Would you prefer I refreshed it now, or waited until L-Z is finished? I'm asking you since you seem to be a frequent contributer to the dead-end pages work, and I want to get some opinions before I just go ahead and add thousands of more entries. Thank you. Salad Days 12:23, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'd say move the old one out of the way and link to it. That list is huge, even by WP:DEAD standards. L - Z would take another month or so to finish, someone left a whole lot of stuff out.
On an unrelated note, I won't be around there for a while, my watchlist is full of prodded unremarkable towers. I prodded 2.5 times my daily contribution of 15 today and there's still plenty to go. Merry Christmas! MER-C 13:59, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it's pretty nuts. The consensus seems to be to wait until this batch is cleared out, for morale purposes. Merry Christmas to you! Salad Days 19:47, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hello, MER-C. You seem to be online, and are a WP user that seems to do good work, and have your head on straight, so I would like to ask if you would be willing to take a look at this article, and the AFD. Naomh Olaf
Hi ,
i hope that you are well. I have noticed that you have marked my article on Naomh Olaf for speedy deletion. I would like to muse this opportunity to highlight the reasoning behind my addition of the page. Firstly I am not sure if you are familiar with the Gaelic Athletic Association which is the largest sporting organsiation in the Republic of Ireland , and has two native sports namely hurling and Football which are unique to the Ireland.
Naomh Olaf is an affiliated member of the GAA and undertakesa great deal of work on promoting the Irish culture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Obriainp (talkcontribs)
So why don't you say so when you initially say so when you created the article. This example sums it up quite succintly. MER-C 12:34, 26 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Aploigies , that is a fair point. Thanks for your help.
List of channels available on SkyCable AFD
Hi, since you started this nomination, but haven't participated in it in a while, I thought you might want to take a look at it again. I notice that somebody has added the various network affiliates to it. I can at least understand nominating a cable network's lineup, those tend to vary from region to region, I disagree with including a national satellite broadcast, but I can at least understand it. Arguing for the deletion of a list of network affiliates though....is beyond my understanding though. Since you didn't add it though, I thought you might best comment on it. I really hope you don't agree though. FrozenPurpleCube 05:33, 31 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
It seems the article has been changed to meet my concerns, as it is no longer a raw list of TV channels which I can turn to a cable TV guide for. There are still ways to make it better, of course, such as to make that distinction clearer. I've withdrawn the nomination, but since there are still delete !votes, I can't close it. MER-C 07:51, 31 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the switch to neutral. Pandit Raghunath Vinayak Dhulekar
Hello Mr MER-C. This is User:Subhashdus. I saw your comment on my article on Pandit Raghunath Vinayak Dhulekar. My article has not been given any such comment by administrators who gave their honest opinion in last 2-3 months. Please let me know what I need to do now and whom I should take approval from to make any changes that are needed. I am confused. Happy New Year to you. Subhashdus.
The problem is that it looks like a resume, not an article. You don't need any approval to clean up an article, just do it. Some advice on writing good articles is available here. MER-C 02:03, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Has a checkuser been run yet? I'm wondering if there are any more puppets. I've tidied up after this one. Might file a request later today, but I've got a feeling that this stuff is coming from that wireless IP. MER-C 03:01, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Harry Potter article for deletion
The Harry Potter in translation series AfDs need to be divided into separate entries as they are different article could have different outcomes. John Reaves 06:13, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
The nom was pretty clear that it was a group nomination. If and when there is a consensus to unbundle the articles, it shall be done. MER-C 06:35, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Periyar
His name is Periyar.Periyar district and University is named after him.Tamil Nadu government calls him Periyar hence changed it asked for India expert to see it.It was earlier called Periyar someone changed it .125.22.158.169 09:43, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's because Periyar is better suited to be a disambuation page which points to the article in question. There are other notable things and people named Periyar and they need to be mentioned too. MER-C 09:49, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
UPLB
Thanks for reverting the changes made by 125.60.243.22. It took me a lot of time just to research stuff for the UPLB wiki page, and I'm glad you immediately detected and corrected the vandalism. You from UPLB too? Kudos. -- —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joe fob (talkcontribs)
No, I'm just one of many Wikipedians who check edits as they happen for vandalism. MER-C 10:32, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Vandalism
If a user, anonymous or not, is doing a lot of vandalism, what's the best way to report their account? Is there a quick way so that admins can quickly check the list of people so marked and block them if necessary? They might only need to block them for 5 minutes and they'd lose interest.
The other way is to continually revert their vandalism, when it might be better to wait til they've bored themselves. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SpookyMulder (talkcontribs)
First you hand out the appropriate warnings then go to WP:AIV when you have issued a final warning. You'll be surprised how persistent some Wikipedia vandals are. MER-C 12:09, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
TalkImpact
I have one question. Why can TNA Impact Community be allowed to stay and TalkImpact can not when they are basically the same thing, only one is offical and the other is not? BrianRFSU 06:51, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
The very first thing below the title in says TNA Impact Community "This article is being considered for deletion in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy." As for TalkImpact, it should be deleted because "it is an article about a person, group of people, band, club, company or website that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject." Enough said. MER-C 07:07, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I still think you are wrong but there is no way for me to fight you guys, you are like the police , you do whatever you want. My unoffical page meets the criteria as I read it , and yet everytime I post, you guys delete it .
There is, if you can provide evidence that such sites meets WP:WEB. MER-C 07:12, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I did , the 1st time, I posted it. I had about 5 different formats which allowed Talkimpact to be notable based on Wiki-rules, and yet the TOSCops deleted it.
Well, if there was any assertion of notability neither I nor the two deleting admins saw it. MER-C 07:44, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Which brings me back to my police comment BrianRFSU 13:03, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Yes, there is a kind of informal patrol which aims to filter out all the vanity, spam, cruft and advertising, plus the other stuff that doesn't belong before it gets lost in the entropy of the main namespace. But let's cut to the chase. How does TalkImpact pass WP:WEB? If you can provide evidence, I can arrange an undeletion for you. MER-C 13:37, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I believed that I did that, but if you can explain the criteria in such a way that I can understand it.
  • The content itself has been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the site itself.
For an article on webcontent to be verifiable, we need multiple third party reliable sources.
  • The website or content has won a notable independent award from either a publication or organization.
Self-explanatory.
  • The content is distributed via a medium which is both well known and independent of the creators, either through an online newspaper or magazine, an online publisher, or an online broadcaster.
If webcontent is distributed through well-known and independent publishers, then it is notable. MER-C 02:18, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Auld Lang song trivia
I'm sad to see that someone (apparently you) has already tagged the item I posted for deletion, because I value the life of the wiki community. I'd searched for the item elsewhere, and not finding it imagined that others searching for it might enjoy seeing it on wikipedia. I appreciate your efforts to protect the wiki community. Still, if such sincere efforts to make contributions are to be greeted with immediate deletion, I fear the spammers have won.
Jw4nvc 07:49, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
The problem was that "it was a short article providing little or no context". Another concern is that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information, so articles consisting of pure unsourced trivia are very deletable anyway. MER-C 08:11, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Matthew Fletcher
Thank you for your involvement in the discussion of this article's deletion.
However, a new source has become available, as mentioned on the disscusion site, should you wish to reconsider your vote. --Reverieuk 19:20, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, he still fails WP:BIO as he seems to be notable only because of his death. MER-C 02:09, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
British Bulldogge AfD log entry
Thanks for moving the AfD for this to the proper log page. I'd never used NPWatcher to auto-create an AfD before, and now I know why... I'm not sure why it appended the "0" to the "4" and created a whole new log page. Time to submit a bug report. :P --Kinu t/c 07:14, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's one of the reasons why I'm a somewhat manual new page patroller. MER-C 07:26, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I agree... I've always done it the hard way, checking diffs, typing out warnings. Recently I had the genius to think that trying out a program or three would make my Wikilife easier. But, alas, sometimes it's more trouble than it's worth. C'est la vie. --Kinu t/c 07:32, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've come to a compromise between the two: IRC feed, Javascript speedy tagging and a  button. MER-C 07:47, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
