Hello,

I have a question about your bot. I am asking about the edit summary. It used to have an edit summary of this: BOT-rv edits by vandal to last version by wikipedian. And now, it's reverted edits by vandal to last version by wikipedian (automatic bot revert). So why did it change? Please reply on my talk page. About My last edit- Royal Central College Polonnaruwa

are refering to a same place. I tried to delete the latter and keep the former since it has beein linked to the "Schools in Sri Lanka" and in the page "pollonnaruwa" under present situation " Royal central collge". Tiny little additions caused Martin to see vandalism

My dear MartinBot. I love your work. You've saved me personally tons of time, getting to the page before I did. However, today while I was just watching AIV, I noticed users being repeatedly reported by another editor, and it was always invalid. So I went to look into the issue, and discovered that this editor was just seeing your previous reverts, and not checking the actual edit in question, and reverting valid edits as vandalism. I will illustrate several differences:

MartinBot reverted this edit. This was a valid edit, the user was adding an "N/A" (not applicable) notation to tables, using a dash. It not only is not vandalism, but it helps the overall appearance of the table.

Then, another user just saw you had reverted, didn't bother to check, and reverted, warning the editor yet again of vandalism.

Then, again on this page. Again the user was warned he was vandalizing, but he was simply adding the dash into tables for readability.

A third example can be found here. By now, the poor editor in question has three warnings, and threats of being blocked, all for his helpful additions. This concerns me as, as I truly hate to see users be chastised. I accept that the bot is not infallible, and I also realize that the other editor did not take the time to look through and see if the bot made a mistake before warning, but I'd like to bring it to your attention so perhaps you can look into the issue.

Now, I did take the time to go through the user's edit history, examine each edit, and each different revision, and earlier on, it seemed he'd accidentally put his dashes in the wrong column, and it removed formatting from the table, which you removed. Granted, that's a valid reversion, but it seems then he was placed perhaps on some "blacklist" of yours, and you've reverted all his subsequent edits. He's genuinely trying, and indeed, he seems to have a pretty advanced grasp of table script, and Wikipedia, I believe he just made a simple error. If you indeed have a "blacklist" of some sort, I'd request that you remove this editor, as he does genuinely seem to be helping, as well as know what he's doing.

Ahh, well, I'm sure white listed editors are registered, and this is an IP, so it probably wouldn't apply. No biggie. If there's a way that MartinBot can improve through little issues like this, and reports, that's cool, if not, we'll just have to hope that RC folks are more careful and remember, MartinBot is only 98% right. Well, it has both black and white lists :). Sometimes massive repetition can trigger the bot - often this catches vandalism, but there is the occasional false positive. Thanks for reporting, Martinp23 23:11, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism

Your bot found and reverted some vandalism that originated in my home. When I received the warning, I was shocked, embarrassed and dismayed. Looking through the edits, I saw some coarse, vulgar verbiage that I would not want to see or have published on wikipedia.

We believe that the source of the vandalism was a vistor in our home, and we have instructed the person whose guest it was not to allow this individual to use the computers when visiting our home any more.

I appreciate the wikipedia community and respect the guidelines. I am sorry that this vandalism occurred and I do not believe that it will happen again.

Usage of MartinBot on other wikis?

Would it be possible for me to use MartinBot on another wiki, and if so, how would I go about that? If not, are you aware of any other anti-vandalism bots out there that I could try? I administer BearWiki[1], and early this morning (while I was still asleep), a vandal hit almost half the pages on the site. Another admin eventually stopped them, but it'd be nice to have a bot there to help protect the site. -- Rei 16:20, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Bot help

Hi Martinp23, could you take a look at User:HermesBot/Source. The source is horrible and not finish because I'm stuck on a few things and was wondering if you could take a look at it. The purpose of the bot is to tag images with no information (text) on the page. If their is any text the bot is suppose to skip the image to avoid any kinds of errors. My first problem is with regexes. The extremely simple [a-z] and [A-Z] regexes could be used and if anything matches, it skips. Right now it's (i.text.Contains("[a-z]")), which doesn't work because it only looks for [a-z], not the actual regex. However I'm not sure how to get it to be a regex. My next problem is i.text = i.text.Replace("", @"{{Di-no source|date={{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}} {{SUBST:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}}}}"); . You can't pass the string "" empty, so I would need to append this. However when I tried to append it I got a bunch of problems. I'm still stuck on that. My third problem is something I haven't tried because I'm not entirely sure how to do it. The {{Di-no source}} has a template on their to notify the uploader with. I don't know how to grab the user's talk page and add the template if it's needed. Hopefully you will be able to help me out :-). Thanks! ~ Wikihermit 17:13, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Two minor problems. One is that it's missing a { bracket on both sides. My simple mind thought to add the two missing brackets on p.text += String.Format(@"{{subst:di-no source-notice|1={0}}} ~~~~", title); and the terminal gave me:

StatusBot

About a week ago, I added the StatusBot category to a few userpages of members of BAG, for the purpose of adding the {{ustatus}} template to the list on WP:BAG. Some users have disagreed with this, so I am going through the user talk pages of people I added the category to. Would you mind keeping the category, or would you prefer it to be removed? If you want it removed, you may either delete your subpage of User:StatusBot/Status, in this case, User:StatusBot/Status/Martinp23, and remove the category from your userpage. Suggestion/Request: Month header

I would love to see MartinBot add the appropriate Month header to his new warnings. What commonly happens is that his warnings for users who have not been here in a while, are placed under the old header (if one is present), and then users assume his warnings were for the month it is under, (granted, they should check, but...) Also, some plug ins such as Twinkle, etc., add the proper month header when it is not present, so those are placed under Martin's warnings, effectively giving the impression that Martin's warnings were previous to that month. ClueBot does the month header, so I would love to see MartinBot be able to implement that feature as well. Thanks for listening! ^Ariel♥Gold 16:29, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

That is frankly not true. I am simply trying to call attention to a trend that has very much to do with horses. I don't know why I'm getting so much heat over a good faith edit??? Claiming WP:BITE is generally something for other people to do on your behalf - your doing it only shows that you are trying to exploit the policy, at least to an extent. As I have told you already, I feel that the material is irrelevant, and I think it could just go in Zoophilia. It seems that you hav been reverted before voer this issue, so now is the time to stop and pursue dispute resolution, before you exhaust somebody's patience. Donnie's edit history shows a single focus on the Pinyan incident; having failed to recruit Exploding Boy to get it included in Arabian horse, he appears to be trying here. Your edit history pretty much speaks for itself. As for 3RR, you were editing as an IP, then moved to your account when the Arabian horse page was semi-protected. Might I suggest to run a checkuser before you "assume" it was me??? I admit that I have forgot to sign in a couple of times, and had to sign in, go back, and leave a signature. However, I guarantee, if you use a checkuser, my username has never been associated with an IP address that was reverting edits. Yeah - sorry about the revert. I've fixed the bug which caused the bot to be blocked in the first place, but it doesn't seem to want to use its good/bad user lists now, which is a new one to me. I'm trying to recreate the databases now. Martinp23 16:58, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I was caught out by MartinBot as well. I reverted some vandalism by 82.29.134.14 to Glenn Miller in which text had been deleted - the second time the page has been vandalised by this user today. I then received a message from the bot telling me that my edit had been reverted as possible vandalism. What should I do about this? Can I undo the edit myself or should I leave it for someone else? Autotagging

Hi, I have a question. I recently started WP:LFC and have a question. I noticed you have a bot which is related to WikiProjects and tagging so I was hoping you might be able to advise me. We have a lot of pages which are in the Category:Liverpool F.C. and it's subcategories. As part of the wikiproject all these articles should have {{Football|England=yes|Liverpool=yes|importance=|class=}} on their talk pages. I have started doing this manually but it is taking a lot of time. As there are hundreds of articles this would apply to is this something your bot, or a bot you know of, can do? Request concerning NewPage Watcher

I use NewPage watcher and I thought to myself that a great improvement for the program could be the ability to type in the articles that you want to access and load them that way as well, so that it's not only a newpage watcher, it can also be used to tag articles that aren't quite new but nonetheless need tags. I have noticed that NPW is a great tool for tagging articles for various reasons new or not new. I would also like to suggest a few new buttons for new tags be added as well. Perhaps a "POV" tag. I wanted some input on this. I also noticed that when I load NPW, prior to looging in I can see "Images" and "Prod" tabs. What are these for and why do they disappear after I log in? Sunder King

Hi, I have just noticed that Sunder King got blocked. As far as I could tell from his edits he was a decent editor. How come he got blocked? The template on his userpage says refer to checkuser for evidence. It took me a while to figure out how to find the Molag Bal archive (as there are no clear instructions on how to do this on the checkuser page), a look at the page history tells me that no new evidence has been added since September 2007 and there is nothing on there relating to Sunder King. The Sunder King talk page has been redirected to his user page and protected, so it is impossible to have any debate about it there. This looks extremely dodgy to me, even if he is this guy Molag Bal, surely blocking people should be more transparent and less misleading. What do you think? Hello, I was wondering if you had the actual C# visual 2005 project from the creation of NewPageWatcher.
