Dean Lesher

Thanks for your input! I'm still a bit wet behind the ears, and I was wondering about that edit you made to my intro already.

No problem. I went to high school in Concord and worked for years in Walnut Creek, so when I saw the name "Dean Lesher" pop up on the New Articles page, I simply had to go poking around; checking out Contra Costa Times after that seemed obvious. And pay no attention to RichardBennett -- he's a thin-skinned newbie upset with my reversing some nonsense he added to a few articles. --Calton | Talk 23:47, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jay Robert Nash

The Jay Robert Nash article is having POV statements inserted by User:Thomist, who is also using a sockpuppet (which means there are not two independent editors inserting the POV sections). If you check out other edits by User:Thomist you will see that the editor has also been faulted for inserting unsourced POV in other places (see the discussion at Talk:Brett Kavanaugh for more, including the use of sockpuppets). I'm always happy to discuss and arrive at consensus with any editor over any article but in this case the editor refuses to provide any sources to back up the POV insertions and is using sockpuppets. As a result, consensus can not be achieved. Best, --Alabamaboy 01:48, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your revised article looks really good. Excellent work. If you ever need any assistance around Wikipedia, just drop me a line.--Alabamaboy 13:27, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I wanted to let you know that I've been impressed with your attempts to mediate the Nash article. I also think your new version of the article has much improved the article and that we should go with it (with a few minor changes to the lead, as mentioned on the talk page). That said, I don't have any more time to spend discussing this issue with Root50, who now wants to delete the Carpinelli section altogether. As I said on the article's talk page, Root50 appears to have an ideological axe to grind against Nash. If Root50 could provide even one reliable source to back up what he/she is saying, I'd be ok with putting that info into the article. As it is now, I will not be taking any more part in this discussion. If Root50 wishes to take this discussion any further, he/she will have to do so through arbitration. Best, --Alabamaboy 19:19, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know what else to do. Personally, I don't understand how your rewrite is wrong. I'm going to propose something on the article's talk page. See what you think. --Alabamaboy 17:19, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please read the proposal on the talk page. I think it will solve many of the problems.--Alabamaboy 17:33, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Interoute

Luna, hi. I am currently working on Interoute's Wikipedia article. I actually have permission to use this paragraph from the holder of the Interoute copyright. Webzilla has somehow lifted the interoute copyrigthed information. Thank you for your keen observation, and I have passed along this information to the copyrigth holder at interoute who I am sure will contact Webzilla. Is there any way that you could remove that tag from my article? Thanks so much!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by KellyKinsella (talkcontribs) .

Luna,
My only proof is that I am currently an employee of the marketing department of interoute. I am not certain how to prove this. I have an interoute email address. Would that prove it? I am just desperate to fix this quickly because my boss would not be pleased if he happened to log onto wikipedia and see this giant flag on Interoute's definition page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by WhitneyEllis (talkcontribs) .
PS Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire is definitely my favorite of the series also!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by WhitneyEllis (talkcontribs) .

Hi. I've reviewed the Interoute article and, quite clearly and without doubt, the "article" is actually an advertisement. The choice of language used is clearly with marketing intent and, as such, meets the criteria for speedy deletion. Wikipedia is not a route to free soft marketing and the very fact that you are running it past your boss in the marketing department makes that clear. If a company is notable enough to have an article then it should be able to stand on its own merits as a NPOV article without puffery. The extant copy has been deleted. A replacement article that meets the standards we set will probably, of course, be acceptable. --AlisonW 20:33, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Advertising generally falls under #7 "Unremarkable people or groups/Vanity Pages. An article about a real person, group of people, band, or club that does not assert the importance or significance of its subject. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to AFD instead." and, in this case, the content was clearly a puff piece and totally POV. Looking at the 'article' I tried to see if something NPOV could be extricated from it, but frankly it seemed that the only thing left would be the name of the company! Once I saw that the creator had passed it by their boss at the company in the marketing department then it became a definite and clear deletion, similar to someone writing their own over-the-top biography on here. As I noted on the talkpages, if there is a good, sensible, NPOV article out there on this company I'm sure one will eventually appear. What was there wasn't it.--AlisonW 22:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

School storm

Thanks, Luna. I really feel quite distant from the article. My "hard feelings" are rather low-level, and I have no reason to contribute further to either talk page or article—my last note was quite a few days ago. However, I'm concerned about my friend, Andrew Jens; he would be a valuable WPian indeed, and he's making noises about never coming back.

I suppose that I'm disappointed in the attitudes of the admins connected with the storm.

Please let me know if I can help, but I doubt that I can. Your input would be very welcome.

Thank you again.

hi

Luna, thanks so much for your excellent management of the cabal thing. You do write well, so if you're inclined, your input to the FAC room would always be most welcome. There's a shortage of skilled reviewers of prose there, and it's been hard to maintain the standards of successful nominations.

Arbitration

Would you support taking the Nash article issue to the mediation cabal or arbitration? Since I am an involved editor (although my only axe to grind is to keep the article NPOV) but you have already been acting in a mediation role, perhaps you could start the mediation process. Now that Carpinelli is involved again, this process just became more complicated since she has a strong POV she's trying to push with the article. I'll be honest--whatever the official mediation process agrees on I'll support. Best, --Alabamaboy 12:31, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

You know, I don't know what to make of all the screaming about the Nash article. Carpinelli (Polycarp7) keeps going on about it being Wikipedia's fault that her article at Catholic Exchange was pulled b/c the Nash article had referenced it. In addition the two main editors involved in this dispute, Polycarp7 and Root50, have basically only edited the Nash article at Wikipedia. Since they both seem to have either a personal connection to the article or a strong POV on it, I see no alternative to arbitration. Personally, I wish I'd never edited this article in the first place so I wouldn't have to deal with all of this. Anyway, I think the arbitration request would be stronger if we presented it together. If you want to start the process I'd back you up or, if you'd prefer, I can start it and hopefully you'd support it. If you'd prefer to run screaming from all of this, I'd also understand. :-).--Alabamaboy 18:55, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

This user is getting very close to being permanently blocked. You can see my long message to him on his talk page, trying to get him to understand what he has done wrong and why he was blocked for 24 hours. The matter is also being discussed on the admin. noticeboard. I take no pleasure in coming down hard on anybody, but he appears to be totally unrepentant at the moment. If there is anything you can do to get him back on track, that would obviously be better than people hurling blocks and bans at him. If not, maybe Wikipedia is not for him. School storm (and worse)

Hi Luna Santin. Thanks for taking up the STHS case, and for your efforts so far. Sorry if my earlier attempts to put a more objective slant on things ended up inflaming the situation. :-( I've kept out of it for a few days, partly because of other commitments, but also to think through some of the issues. Unfortunately, it looks like things have taken a bit of a turn for the worse. I'm at a loss as to what to do now. I did have some comments about the "compromise" suggestion, but I might stay away for a while longer now. What do you think? I also had some things to say about enochlau. I do appreciate his efforts to protect pages from what he sees as vandalism, but the use of revert (and particularly "rollback") without leaving explanations on talk pages is, I think, one of the reasons why this whole thing started. WP:RV has some very wise words about revert/rollback, particularly with regard to how it might be perceived by the other editor. Anyway, enough rambling. And, enochlau, if you're reading this, please don't take offence. I'm only trying to figure out what happened here, rather than seeking to blame anyone. There are lessons to be learned by all of us. :-( Winterelf 08:11, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ranking Chart

A quick Google search easily displays at least 5 websites with the same exact so called copyrighted material in the top 10 results alone. This is common knowledge, factual, not exclusive publication and therefore I do not believe that it should be considered Copywritten material.

Furthermore, I recently noticed that some pictures that I had added to the unreal tournament section had been removed for copyright infringement. How is that possible since the pictures were taken using the screen shot function of my client?

Are external links per force a violation of WP:MOS?

Luna Santin,

You edited most/all external links out of the body of an article, ostensibly "in keeping" with WP:MOS. I claim no expertise (or even much knowledge) of the MOS, but it isn't intuitively obvious to me that an external link is by definition (or even most of the time) indicative of an advert.

Just as seemingly obvious internal links can help readers by directing them immediately to a resource without their having to copy&paste and/or search for it, it seems to me that an external link does much the same thing.

By the implied reasoning of your edits, pretty much any external link should be excised from the body of an article. Is there any way to delineate when it's considered OK and when it is an advert?

You also edited factual statements out of the article on similar grounds, but again, I fail to see how this information amounted to an advert, as it merely informed the article's readers how close to the event the submissions cut-off was.

That information is no more an advertisement than noting the fact that public submissions are accepted in the first place, or that there is no deadline for submissions -- or that it is an annual event, that it's location alternates between Place A and Place B, or that a specific type of software can be used for a given task.

I want to understand and learn more about the MOS, so if you can cite relevant references to it to explain your edits, I'd appreciate them.

Thanks by the way, for adding the categories.

Common Knowledge!

A quick simple Google search [1] Returns these results in the top 15: [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] (blacklisted: domesticgearDOTcom/steroidranking.htm)

Like I said before, its common knowledge! I see it as similar to creating a table of the Olympic team’s scores after the last Olympics. This likewise was a rating of performance; just in this case a different more controversial subject was being rated.

It is my opinion that the sharing of information should never be curtailed in anyway, whatever the information or source. Furthermore, if wikipedia has come to the point in its life cycle were informative content is edited away for fear of legal ramifications; maybe it is time for another bolder site to arise.

Yes, a smaller less popular site, somewhere lawyers won’t think to go for at least a few years… now that’s not paraphrased. Someplace with more pictures for us visual orientated folk who like to see bright colors and movement and shinny things. I will refrain from making any edits at wikipedia from now on because every time I do, I just get annoyed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robertsloca (talkcontribs)

WTF?

OK basically I'm complaining - I get blocked all the time for Vandalism I haven't done, even by accident. I use this website for research (usually it renders the rest of the internet redundant) so I never edit any of your pages. But I get mesages ALOT saying I've been editing pages I haven't even been to. What's going on? It seems unlikely that all your computers are going wrong or that an administrator is pissed off at me, so could it be a security problem? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.171.198.4 (talkcontribs) .

I'll respond both here and on your talk page. Your IP address appears to be registered to a school, which would mean that all (or many) of the computers at the school connect to the internet through that same address (in networking, this is sometimes called a proxy server). Because we can only log edits by an anonymous user according to their IP address, all edits by anyone in the school are logged under the same address. Does that make sense? I can sympathize, really. If you'd like to avoid those messages, you can create an account for yourself. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. Luna Santin 20:30, 11 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

EDO Corporation

Hi Luna,

Can you please explain to me what exactly is your problem with the EDO Corporation material that you keep editing? --212.100.250.208 20:44, 11 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Replying here, since I can't be sure what IP you'll be under whenever you get this. The first time I looked at this diff, my impression was that you'd blanked the page and replaced it with a political protest; the keyword there is impression, of course, I'm only human. Regardless of our political views, I doubt it would ever be acceptable to have a page's introductory heading read "EDO: Every Death an Opportunity;" as an encyclopedia, we should strive to write from a neutral point of view. That particular heading, plus a very quick read over the material, plus the blanking, set off my intuition, if that makes sense. The second problem is a bit more straightforward -- in the event that we're going to say nasty things about people, we need to have a source for it, to conform to these two very important policies: no original research, and verifiability (see WP:CITE for more information). Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any other questions, I strive to be approachable. Luna Santin 20:59, 11 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

To say that "Ek Onkar" is derived from "Aum" is incorrect and actually offensive to Sikhs. Sikhism is a distinct religion from Hinduism and the "Ek Onkar" sign far from being a derivative of "Aum" actually created a polar opposite to it. Its like saying the name "Allah" should be included here as what it represents (One God) is a polar opposite to the many Gods of Hinduism. Similarly "Ek Onkar" is a polar opposite to "Aum" as its belief is in One God and was not a derivative. To say "Om in Sikh tradition" is a contradiction in terms. The "stylised Ek Onkar" too is incorrect. Right-wing Hindus use these most fundamental of Sikh symbols to claim Sikhism is not a religion but merely a part of Hinduism. To say "Guru Nanak, by placing the number 1 in front of Onkar.." and the supposition that the founder of a faith of several million people merely put a one in front of "Aum" is offensive. Guru Nanak recognised Hindu thought and used it in Gurbani but when you use the most fundamental symbols of any faith you should use them with utmost care. Symbols are often manipulated in this way by right-wing people wishing to cause offense. "Ek Onkar" is a polar opposite to "Aum" so why mention it and if you will then also please mention "Allah" as "Allah" too is used in Sikh daily prayers in the Sikh religion.

University of Waterloo Womyn/Women's Centre

Just to note on the recent change and revert on the Womyn's Centre name. The official name currently is the Womyn's Centre. It will not be changed to the Women's Centre until the bylaw change is ratified at the Fall General Meeting of the Corporation. (All bylaw changes must be ratified at a GM). The reason people may believe it is changed is over the recently adopted Service Review Recommendation that was adopted by Student's Council last month. This was a recommendation to bring forward the bylaw change to the GM, which it will be. Despite that resolution, the name is currently the Womyn's Centre and your revert was correct. I noted this information on the talk page as well. Thanks for catching it :) Jeff 03:33, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

As per your note, I uploaded a new image and used the pull-down menu to mark it as a public domain (US government image). I kept the same name but told wiki to delete the former.

However, when I look at the image, the message about copyright still shows up. Did I properly tage the new version? Does it take a few days for the system to replace the old version with the new? I'm still new to this game but intend to occasionally write articles in the future.

"rmvd advert link" (article "Hermit")

Hi, Luna, I was surprised at your reason for removing the link. I had a quick look at it and did not get the impression that its purpose is "advert". So, I would not remove it for this reason. But same quick look also did not convince me that it is a presentation suitable in this context. Should this link not go into the Carthusian article? (Em, I haven't checked but assume Wikipedia has one on the Carthusians.) 19:40, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I'll reply both here and on your talk page, to hopefully be sure you see it. More than happy to discuss -- if you're curious, have a look at my recent contribs, and you should see that I spent a decent chunk of last night removing quite a few links to that website. Then, if you like, have a look at 203.97.0.38's contribs, and you'll see that they spent the past two or three months adding around forty references to what appears to be their personal website. Articles exploring the symbolic links between Jesus and the Hiroshima bombings surely can't have a high encyclopedic relevance to quite that many articles, no? If there was an article the site was truly relevant to, we might point to a specific article, though I admit I'm not optimistic in that regard. Thanks for contacting me, Luna Santin 20:22, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Removal of links to www.liturgy.co.nz

Greetings Luna

I think there may have been a number of misunderstandings. I think you went to the Hiroshima page where you found a link to a page on my site which relates World Peace Day, Hiroshima Day, and the Feast of the Transfiguration (August 6). You then made the call that this is not of encyclopaedic value - others might judge differently, that is not my point. You then went on to a number of other pages on the assumption, I think, that the links went merely to the Hiroshima page. They did not. Had you looked at the link, you would have seen they go to different pages appropriate to the subject IMO.

You have removed all the links from all the pages.

There was a link from "Liturgy", for example. Having removed the link to www.liturgy.co.nz which presents contemporary liturgical theory and practice, what is left in Wikipedia is a link to "Catholic Encyclopedia" written in 1908! And a link to the Quakers who are explicitly non-liturgical! I am new at all this, and realise I may not have understood and followed all appropriate protocols, and I apologise for that. However, I think the removal of all links to www.liturgy.co.nz is surprisingly over-reacting. There is nothing being advertised on that site. And I can assure you, in tracking visitors to the site from Wikipedia, that those who arrive on www.liturgy.co.nz visit a considerable number of pages, spend significant time on what they sometimes feed-back to have been a helpful resource, and make return visits.

Most of the alterations to Wikipedia sites attributed to the IP address are not mine. I realise it may be better if I create an account, and now understand that I would have been better off placing my link through the discussion areas on a page. However, I still consider the removal of all links, without having looked around www.liturgy.co.nz more carefully, also a bit strong, and hope you will consider restoring them.

With every best wish

Will reply both here and on your talk page. That assumes I was blind. I will apologize for using VP, if that implies to you that the edit was vandalism, but your redirect is not appropriate, as New York is far from being the only city with a subway system, and the tone of your edit summary [11] was far from civil. Luna Santin 12:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, I avoided the assumption that you were enaging in willing vandalism, my mistake, since mass transit is not a form of subway, and the redirect was created just to subvert consensus on subway, and was created by someone who seems to have over 60 blocks for disruption, I was tempted just to speedy it--71.249.1.156 12:05, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • OHNOZ HE CALLED ME A VANDAL. Seriously, you'll get a much better reaction from people if you don't open up with a full offensive, from the get-go. We're all people, we all make mistakes. Both of us have made one or two, here. Just for your own future reference, when you're acting on talk page consensus (doubly so when it's another article's talk page), it never hurts to say so. I honestly would not have reverted, if you had -- discussed, probably, but not immediately reverted. I review over a thousand edits a day, and I have to make a judgement call with the best information I have available; it really isn't reasonable to expect RC patrollers to go hunting for all related talk pages, so I do have to ask you to bear that in mind, just for your future editing. Before you ask, yes, I'll be chalking this down as an error in my log. Luna Santin 12:19, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

University of Dundee

It seems you have "reverted" back to a previous version of this page using VP?

Please note that the University of Dundee Logo is displayed on this page. This image is copyright and should not be displayed without permission. It may be that permission has been granted (I suspect not) in which case it would be good to show that this is the case. The image University of Dundee logo displayed on Wikipedia appears distorted and does not show the "protected area" of whitespace around the logo.

Hi

Hi, I made some derogatory remarks on the ambedkar page due to derogatory remarks made by an "ambedkarite" jamnadas, a pseudo-intellectual who is known for his anti=-hindu propaganda. His artcile on BG Tilak was added to the TIlak entry as the "dalit view of Tilak." This entry is very offensive towards followers of TIlak's ideologies, like myself. The Jamnadas article does not cite sources and only reflects one person's view. In fact, the "dalit view on TIlak" isnt important enough to be included in a wikipedia entry on TIlak. I realize i shouldnt have vandalized the ambedkar page. It was done in a fit of passion as I was offended by their views. However, i beleive my trying to delete the dalit view of tilak section is justified. please do resolve this ASAP —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.152.144.21 (talkcontribs) 2 August 2006.

Citations?

Hi Luna,

I thought that you weren't supposed to put something up on Wikipedia unless it had been published elsewhere.

I added the entries "Jugnu Mohsin" and "Ejaz Haider" thinking that to be the case, but didn't know how to link the entries to the original websites from which I'd basically copied and pasted the information.

How does this work? How does one prove that the information has already been published and how does add a citation?

keylogger article

Greetings Luna,

I am responding to your deleting of my helpful external link. You asked me to justify the encylopedic value fo this link. I think it is one of many examples of this type of software. As an IT manager for my company, I have tested many of these types of programs and this is the one we deployed several times when an employee was suspected of fraudulant activities.

I am new to wikipedia and obviously not as active as you are. However, I believe the link is valuable. I would also like to ask you, what is the encylopedic value of the other external links? Most importantly:

http://www.monitoringsoftwarereviews.org/ which is clearly a commercial site that is selling many types of these programs under affiliate programs.

The link I am proposing is a direct example of what is already mentioned on the article "and additionally, some programs also record or take snapshots of what is displayed on the screen."

Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cheezyd (talkcontribs) 4 August 2006.

keylogger article edits

Hi thank you for your reply.

I agree, that spam is a problem in all forms, including wiki spam. I read the guidelines for external links as you suggested and I see what you are getting at. I also agree that the link I added is to a site selling something. It is the web site of a company. By design, all companies sell something.

From searching around previously, I could not find any open source or freeware versions of this type of software. If an open source (not for profit) existed, I think it would be a better choice as a link.

While I haven’t edited any wikipedia articles until now, I have used wikipedia for a very long time. I have noticed that many wikipedia articles link externally to company web sites. And, as I pointed out, all of these companies are in the business of selling products or services. For example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_stock has links to both Kodak and Fuji web sites which sell film.

Or, for something closer to the topic we are discussing…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware links to Lavasoft and Safer Networking (under Software). Both companies sell software to prevent spyware. Under a strict interpretation of the external link guidelines, both of these should be removed.

However, I do think they have value. Users come here for information. And it is reasonable to assume that some of the people looking up “spyware” actually have spyware on their machines and need help getting rid of it. In which case, the article would not only inform them, but also help them. Which I think is great.

By the same token, someone looking up keyloggers could either be a scholar or a person who needs one. In a paper encyclopedia, under “snake”, the best you can do is have a picture of a snake. But wouldn’t it be cooler to have a piece of snake skin too? This is, in my opinion, the best part of wikipedia. The ability to provide “real” examples. Either by embedded pictures, sound or video, or by linking to external sites. As a result, I think an external link to a site with keylogging software would improve the article. And that is what we are here for isn’t it? To improve the articles?

To be honest, this will probably be the last time I edit an article. While I usually view debate and discussion as a good thing, in this case I didn’t expect to spend so much time defending my small, first time, edit. I can only imagine this probably goes on quite a bit so maybe being an editor is biting of more than I can chew.

You seem to have adopted this article and are very protective of it. So I will leave it up to you. Change my link if you want to. Delete it if you want to. I believe it has merit.

Regard,

CheezyD
