Hi Kupdung,

My intention was not for the Indus International Page to get deleted but I wanted someone to take notice and make the neccessary changes so that the article matches wikipedia standards. I'm glad you took notice. Thanks so much Meera devine (talk) 05:40, 16 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Kupdung, In autumn last year you blocked User 75.80.134.142 for repeated miscategorisation. The user is still making unconstructive edits (see April 2013 on the Talk Page) and probably needs blocking again. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 16:30, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

A favor -Environmental law articles ready for preliminary review edit

Hi Kudpung. I see that you're an online ambassador. I'm the Professor for Aaron Frank's environmental law class, and while you're not signed up for my course, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at any or all of the articles my students are working on. One of the aspects of this sort of course is that students understand that they are putting their work out before the wikipedia community for review. In the past, there hasn't been that much activity on their pages as they were working on them. I was hoping that if you were willing, you could take a look. If not, no problem.

The students now have draft articles in mainspace and are starting to review each other's articles, and they could also use a preliminary review by an experienced Wikipedian in this area. If you get a chance, ideally sometime before Thursday or so, please take a look at the following list of articles and leave feedback on the talk page:

Thank you! Aarf613 (talk) 17:15, 29 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Having gratefully leaned on your support in re Elgar, I wonder if I can interest you in the FAC for Gustav Holst. Hi Tim. I'm sorry I was unable to take a look in time - I've been away on business in the jungle again with extremely limited Internet access. A very nice article - congratulations to all concerned. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:53, 12 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Re: Autopatrolled edit

I boldly changed the threshold in response to discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Unbundle autopatrolled from admin rights package, particularly the thread "The wrong question". I tend to agree that a centralised discussion of current community standards on this point would be useful, but no-one seems sufficiently interested to set one up. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 12:18, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi EA. Thanks for your reply. As one of the most regular admins at PERM, and having reviewed literally hundreds of applications for 'Autopatrolled', and having patrolled literally tens of thousands of new articles, I can't see any reason to reduce the threshold. IMHO to start a discussion on it would be a solution looking for a problem. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:34, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sri Lankan Shenanigans edit

Hi Kudpung! I may call on you for some backup/advice concerning this issue. See also this, and most recently this. Hopefully, the shenanigans will stop after my latest warning, but just in case... Best, Voceditenore (talk) 13:15, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have issued an L2 warning (which anyone can do). The previous complaints serve already for an L1. If the disruption continues however, I suggest you either carry out your threat of an SPI or augment the warnings for disruption. If the disruption is really a nuisance you can spring straight to a final warning and if he steps out of line after that, let me know and I will block. tribal names edit

Hi Kudpung, I saw you weigh in over at Kwami's talk page on the issue of the renaming of articles about Indigenous people in Canada. Skookum! really is correct here and needs some help on the individual articles that have the move discussions going on. If there are people who understand about these issue of naming indigenous groups, yourself included, it would be helpful for them to weigh in and help explain policy a bit. I've already voted and it's kind of being a Skookum1 v Kwami debate now... Montanabw(talk) 17:17, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I was bullied off all discussions about linguistics by Kwami some years ago and following his performance on my RfA, I really have no interest in discussing anything more with him. Suffice it to say, he has unilaterally decided how we Brits should pronounce our town and county names by introducing a rhotic R where there are none, into the lead sections of town and county articles. Standard British English is non rhotic as most Americans are fully aware. Only a few regional accents have one, in particular Scottish and those of SW England, but it is my contention that an encyclopedia should represent the standard form, unless local dialects and accents are treated separately in sections of articles. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:07, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've since checked out the discussions and those on the various users' talk pages. The current discussions are indeed a similar repeat of Kwami's personal hegemony over British English place/county names from a few years ago. Kwami's tendentious editing and baiting people in the hope that they will acquiesce is nothing new (and there are diffs to prove it). What happens is that they quietly retire from areas on Wikipedia to which they possibly had most to contribute; the loss is to Wikipedia as a whole and is not conducive to editor retention. I concur with you and Skooum1, but let Skookum not take the bait. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:07, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unrelated and potentially fun edit

Saw your bio bit about WWII radar. You might be interested in Russell and Sigurd Varian, an article I've been working on some and would like to eventually put up for GA. These guys invented the klystron and did a lot of work on radar during WWII, then founded Varian Associates, one of the first firms to take root in Silicon Valley.. One of their widows helped their niece build up a nice horse ranch, which is how I came across them (with me, everything eventually traces back to WikiProject Equine, heh...) Anyway, I've been looking for a collaborator/partner in crime on that article ever since User:Churn and change bailed from WP. Any help or even just constructive critiques would be welcomed. Montanabw(talk) 17:19, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't know anything (much) about Radar myself, having chosen a career in linguistics. My Dad, who is now 94, was on the WWII radar development team in the UK, and went on to be a rocket scientist. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 17:35, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
How is his memory? Possible he knew of or worked with the Varian brothers -- there's a big blank hole in their WWII history, as apparently they did work that is classified. But they were moved from the west coast to the east coast of the USA during the war and helped figure out how to make radar devices small enough to put into airplanes, basically. Sigurd was a pilot who saw the need, Russell was the scientist. Both were rather quirky geniuses from a literary family (see John Osborne Varian, their father, who knew William Butler Yeates back in Ireland...) I'm finding this whole family to be filled with extremely interesting people. Montanabw(talk) 21:43, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
He won't know them. He worked exclusively in the UK with most of the people mentioned in this article. After the war he continued on research there, through its various name changes, on missile aerodynamics and guidance systems until he retired as a civil servant, after which he continued to work on avionics for several years as a consultant to a government contract company until he retired for good. At TRE during the 40s he also contributed to the further development of the magnetron invented by John Randall and Harry Boot. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:57, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah! Compare Cavity magnetron to klystron -- from the latter: "Klystron amplifiers have the advantage (over the magnetron) of coherently amplifying a reference signal..." so related (for a similar purpose) technology. Now, your dad would be probably at best provide WP:OR in wiki-land (sigh) but I find it interesting that there is something of an intersection here. Perhaps more to the point, do you know of any good military history-or-radar sources in the UK that I might peruse for additional research? Montanabw(talk) 23:16, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
You could start with Wireless World (I believe my dad was a contributor in the 50s and 60s). Two companies who worked on government contracts were Marconi Company and Plessey. They might give you some leads. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:21, 16 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

My apologies (re: WMF/community relations) edit

Hi Kudpung. First I want to say thanks for hanging in there and sticking with the project. It's through the dedication of editors such as yourself that Wikipedia has become what it is today. I appreciate the devotion you have shown to the project. I know you had a difficult RfA and I'm guessing that's what lead you to start the RfA reform stuff. I also know you've been subjected to quite a bit of unjustified hostility from new users/IPs because of your help in the admin areas. So I wanted to thank you for hanging in there and sticking with the project.

I just read Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2013-05-13/News and notes and it seems likely that I have been looking at the WMF through rose-colored glasses. I shall make a concerted effort to take in view points contrary to my own with regards to the WMF.

You've kept me on my toes, Kudpung, and I appreciate that. It's important to me to see things how they truly are and not give too much weight to one side or the other. You've had a positive influence on me and I wanted to let you know about it. All the best. 64.40.54.136 (talk) 02:39, 17 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Addendum: I just realized you posted a blocking message but neglected to block. The user just contacted me asking for CHU and COI issues. As they are not blocked, I'll go ahead and let them know to go to CHU before they do anything else. We'll be watching and the old account will be blocked if they do not do CHU request. -- Alexf(talk) 11:44, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, for an aberrant moment I forgot that the TW warning does not automatically do the block. Thanks for taking care of it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:48, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually it does if you click on Block instead or Warn. Block works then warns. Warn section just posts the blocking message as in this case. The reason for this (been there, done that) is usually lack of coffee. -- Alexf(talk) 11:54, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

11:24, 24 May 2013 Kudpung (talk | contribs) deleted page Anderson Strathern (G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion)

I originally created this page and i see that someone added promotional content, and you were correct to delete it. I plan to recreate this page and will monitor any subsequent changes to ensure that the content remains neutral. Hope this is ok? Thanks Thartley24 (talk) 12:42, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest that to be on the safe side, you recreate it in your user space and ask me or someone else to review it before you move it to mainspace. If you would like a copy of the deleted page emailed to you, just ping me - it might help you to get started again. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:49, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes if you could email me a copy of the deleted page, that would be a real time saver. I'll certainly ask for approval before moving it. Thank you Thartley24 (talk) 15:59, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

speedy deletion edit

Kudpung, thank you for removing the "speedy deletion" tag from Robert Isaacson and for seeing the substance in my newborn article. Unfortunately, the User who appended the "speedy deletion" tag has now restored it. (How is that allowed?) Would you mind weighing in on the deletion discussion? Many thanks — Sandover (talk) 22:54, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I removed the speedy because the article makes reasonable claims to importance. That does not mean however that I endorse keeping the article. User:Reddogsix still feels that there is a possibility that the article will not meet our notability guidelines (in this case WP:BIO), and has listed the article for discussion by the community. This is quite a normal process if a PROD or a CSD is declined but an editor still thinks there are grounds for deletion. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:03, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

English/German edit

Hi, I'm very sorry to bother you but I wonder if you could offer me some help/advice, please? I've been working on an article, which I have just moved to main space, Pitfour estate - I had also done some work on the articles about the lairds of the estate. I notice there is an article on the German Wikipedia for Pitfour House. I'm ashamed to admit my German is non existent but using Google translate, I think some of the German article might be incorrect; for instance, I think the German article says the estate was acquired in 1800 by James Ferguson (1735-1820) but these dates are for the third laird. The estate was actually purchased by his grandfather in 1700. It does become confusing as the first three lairds were all James Ferguson, followed by three named George Ferguson!

I'm not sure how I've landed on your page about this, perhaps as you're listed as able to translate from German to English? Again, I'm sorry to bother you but I'm not sure how to get corrections done on the German Wikipedia - of course it could be that the Google translation is just making nonsense of it..... SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:49, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

PS - I'd even managed to get the lairds muddled up myself when I typed this, so have altered the above! SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:58, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Here is a complete manual translation of the body of the German Wikipedia article. It's not very different from a Google translation but German syntax is quite different from English and Google doesn't handle it too well, resulting in false negatives, etc. The only way you can verify the information is by obtaining and checking the cited sources. Good luck, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:23, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Translation

Pitfour House was a mansion north of the village of Old Deer in Aberdeenshire (Scotland). The mansion was demolished in 1926. Of Pitfour Estate, Saplinbrae House, Pitfour Lake and parts of the park with the "Temple of Theseus," a folly, still exist. The monastery ruin Deer Abbey was also on the property, which was one of he largest in Scotland.

James Ferguson (1735-1820) acquired the Pitfour Estate around 1800 and together with his nephew George Ferguson (1786-1867), an admiral, developed the park and farms up to around 1850. The family had become wealthy through the West Indian sugar business.

The manor house was probably built in 1812 on the site of an older building with the numerous other buiding being constructed during the following years. Most of the numerous other buildings also likely to be incurred in subsequent years. As an architect, John Smith (1781-1852) was was active from 1822 to 1831 while work to plant the garden probably goes back to William Sawrey Gilpin (1762-1843). The project for a canal (St Fergus and Ugie North Canal), operated by Admiral Ferguson seemed to encounter technical difficulties (some sections apparently maintained) and was finally abandoned with the construction of the railway in 1840.

The son of Admiral Ferguson, George Arthur Ferguson (1835-1924), inherited the estate in 1876. The area encompassed 8100 hectares and Pitfour Estate was repeatedly offered unsuccessfully for sale at auction. All documents related to Pitfour Estate and the Ferguson family were lost following the demolition of the mansion.

Buildings

The manor house (1812, with alterations in 1820) was built in the neo classic style using granite from from Aberdeenshire. The facades were strict and showed little architectural embellishment while the park facing the south side of the lake was glazed with large windows. Joined to the building was a terraced garden in a formal style with a central fountain. The building was demolished in 1926.

Other buildings included stables and farm buildings (1826), a riding school, a racecourse, a private chapel with a low Gothic tower, some cottages that formed a model village and served as accommodation for the employees. The centre of the park formed an artificially dammed lake, The Lake, now the 20 hectare Pitfour Lake, was constructed in 1816 with three small islands, with a small scale replica of the Athenian Temple of Theseus (existing) at the northwest end. A boat house in the gothic style exists as a ruin.

The entrance to the park consisted of a memorial gates with two columns, and wasdedicated to Prime Minister Pitt and the Scottish Minister Robert Dundas. In addition, the Fergusons had erected an observatory and the monastery ruins Deer Abbey lying to the south were converted to a kitchen garden, and later to a mausoleum of which the entrance still exists.

Wow, thank you! SagaciousPhil - Chat 06:14, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

vector.js meddling edit

Hey, Kudpung! Sorry to meddle with your things, but I couldn't resist: I saw your post about your JS issues on Scottywong's talk page and took a look. On your vector.js page, it looked like you were using HTML-style comment syntax (i.e. <!-- ... -->) to insert comments. That isn't the comment syntax that Javascript uses, though; Javascript uses the same comment syntax that Java uses, where single-line comments begin with // and multi-line or partial-line comments are enclosed by /* and */. As I said, I couldn't resist going into your .js page and replacing the HTML comments with the equivalent JS comments (here's the diff); I'm really sorry if that's out of line. Let me know if that fixes the problem (you might have to bypass your browser cache to see any changes). Writ Keeper  15:11, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you enormously for that, WritKeeper. It is much appreciated, and it probably wasn't easy because my js page is a mess. I have noted your comments about syntax, but it's odd that everything was working normally until I took my break. It seems as if most scripts are working again now. I'll let you know about others as I get round to using them. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:23, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
*shrug* You'd be surprised how often stuff like that happens: you notice something slightly wrong, some minor problem, with some code, then when you look at it, you see that none of it should ever have worked. Usually, once you notice that, the whole system starts crashing down around you, like Wile E. Coyote only falling after he realizes he's been running on thin air. I believe the technical term for it is a "schrodingbug". Anyway, you're very welcome; again, let me know if anything else is breaking, and I'll be more than happy to take a look.
