Musical theatre

I really don't think he understands the issue. Now he wants "Musicals by x" - but doesn't answer why. It doesn't serving any purpose other than providing a shortcut for people who want all their links immediately. Does WP have any guidelines on why something should/should not be categorized? Perhaps a future solution is for this specific project to put forth guidelines, and explain why some are not useful. I've noted that plenty of categories are changed years after they've been set up (a favorite: "British Jews" - keeps on changing because they can't agree on the appropriate wording). So maybe the solution is to let him have his fun, and stake out guidelines for the future - and then in the future, enough people will question what was done in the past and amend it. -- kosboot (talk) 21:07, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Woolson Morse

Hi. I see you added a photo of an "unmarked grave" that you photographed yourself. Can you explain, on the image page, how you know it is his grave? Usually, photos of graves show the grave itself saying who is buried there, but in this case, I think we need more for verifiability. Johann Friedrich Agricola and other composers

Hi. I was about to look at Johann Friedrich Agricola and then I saw you have put the MT banner on it. I'm wondering whether it would be better to leave all the composers with the Composers Project and concentrate on 'doable' theory articles? I think this would make our task much easier. Banners on categories

Hi - I put them there because I see others do it with other projects. Just as there is a "list" assessment category, so many have a "category" category in their assessments. I was trying to figure out if it's redundant, and I don't think it is. You think it is? -- 01:01, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

(Let's keep this here!). I think it's OK to put banners on cats if it's for a specific purpose, otherwise it's just tends to confuse project article stats. I'm a believer in the KISS principle! McCaull Comic Opera Company

The sources differ as to what happened to the company after 1889. The NY Times says that he got out of the business a year after his injury, but I think this is wrong - other sources say that he continued to produce the company until much later. -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:07, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Plaintiff typically goes first, but a defendant can make a claim too, called a "counterclaim". But, I should say that I suspect that McCaull had lawsuits against lots of people in his day (and so did Russell!), and I would try to keep any description of this as short as you possibly can. What I'd most like to see more of, in the article, is information about the "character" of the company - what was its historical place among opera companies in the U.S.; was it known as an incubator for young talent (I suspect so); did it premiere lots of works for the first time in America? (not sure), etc. Also, what happened to its assets (sets, costumes, etc) when it folded? And when, exactly, did it fold? -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:09, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that room until today. That room is on the L level, so one can't bring any materials from the 3rd off the third floor. But it's reserved for our use the entire day, and so far no one has signed up for anything. Wanna take something? Ah! Didn't you see the banner that use to be above every article (up until about 2 weeks ago)? It led to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Libraries. Since I'm a librarian and believe in this kind of effort, we organized one where I work: Wikipedia:The Musical. It was a good experience (I intend to write a blog post about it in a day or two). Thanks for the shiny trophy! It's up on the mantelpiece. I think the event was a decided success, with at least half a dozen total newbies learning the ropes, and another dozen Wikipedians finding materials that they would not otherwise have had access to. I expanded the article on The Boy (musical) together with one of my trainees (User:Annveal), and moved it from Stub class to Start class. This was particularly satisfying, because this is a very important WWI-era musical, for which it had been frustratingly difficult to find much information on the internet. Good Morning, Judge

1. Gershwin template: I don't think this should be included in Gershwin's template. In those days, interpolated lots of new songs periodically through their runs, as well as in new productions, sometimes from multiple composers. I imagine that Gershwin supplied songs to lots of shows, but listing them would make his template LESS useful rather than more. It would be better to have a list article listing all of Gershwin's songs.

2. Good Morning, Judge. It appears to have been essentially the same show as "The Boy", with rather minor changes. So, I wouldn't give it its own article - I would just give it its own paragraph (or maybe even a section) in the "The Boy" article with a little more info, and a redirect. Unfortunately, I ran out of time at the library to get more info on this, and I don't intend to return to the subject, since the show only ran 140 performances, whereas "The Boy" ran over 800 performances in London. I consider this to be simply the Broadway production of "The Boy". But, I have no objection to your giving it its own article if you feel inspired to do so. BTW, the library has reviews and other clippings for Good Morning, Judge, but I ran out of time before I had a chance to review them. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:18, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

The Wagner article is in need of some help

We're in a bit of a pickle in the Wagner discussion page. The issues concerns Social class (sociology) and the phrase supposedly common Germanic past and has now been dismissed by some editors as inconsequential. Furthermore, the name Other interpretations in the article dismisses the general review and broader Wagner analysis to a subcategory under Controversies (mainly the topic of anti-Semitism). Please help. Just take fast look and maybe help in the balancing act. Thank you

Hi, Kosboot. Thanks for your work to rescue Schleifer.

Would you like to help with an overhaul of the lengths of musical notes? I learned as a kid that a whole note is 4 beats because it takes up the whole measure of a standard, 4-beat measure. A whole rest, however can have a variable beat length because a measure in, say, 3/4 time has a different number of beats. But (like the 2-beat rest) a whole note always has 4 beats, right? I walked away from an edit war on this a few years ago.

There are also issues of standard terminology: quaver, minim, etc., which our friends across the pond use (in British English?) while we New Yorkers who use American English call eighth note and half note.

I got real interested in this while writing software that takes raw MIDI input from my electronic piano and figures out the dynamic metronome setting as the musician speeds up and slows down while playing. (This helps in music education, e.g., you want to determine what places in a passage are most difficult to play at tempo.) --Uncle Ed (talk) 16:59, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Kosboot, it is essential ... that the IBDB be regarded as a reliable source, unless you personally wish to replace the thousands of references to it before the articles referencing it are deleted. Plus, the fact that it is online is, in fact, very important, as anyone can easily look it up and use it.
