Question for administrator

edit

{{admin help}} I often edit Wikipedia from my university network. As it has a shared IP, I had requested a Global IP block exempt at Meta.wm.org and was granted it. However, since then I have changed universities, but the IP address situation is more or less identical. and while trying to edit a page, there is a message saying I can't edit because of an IP block. This seems to be counter-intuitive, as I have a global exempt. Please help me out so that I may contribute to my best capacity. Image of block message included here. I am not sure what the correct course of action is, so I used "admin help" instead of "unblock"

Thanks --Kknundy (talk) 09:58, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

That range was blocked only yesterday as an open proxy. I have asked the blocking admin to comment. JohnCD (talk) 10:48, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out. Kknundy (talk) 10:50, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
The range block was targeted at users of the anonymox plugin (for Firefox probably). If you disable this plugin you should be able to edit again. If that is not an option, admins looking at IPBE should note that this user does not appear to be the intended target of the block, and I have no obvious objections to block exemption. -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:08, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I do sometimes use the anonymoX plugin, albeit not on Wikipedia. There might have been some oversight on my part where I didn't disable it before an edit. I'll try to avoid it in the future, but is there a particular reason such a block exists for logged-in users? Kknundy (talk) 11:14, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately this wiki has massive problems with logged-in sockpuppets abusing anonymising proxies. -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:19, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I see. That kind of makes sense. I would appreciate an option where I could bypass such blocks, if that isn't too much trouble, or doesn't cause any disruption. Personally though, I feel there are several other techniques for sockpuppets to abuse, and this block can cause more legitimate edits to be lost, than the help it results in.
Yes, we're also onto those other techniques :) This IP range block only affects anonymox users, so I'm going to assume that you are able to disable your anonymising proxy plugin, that you do not need to edit via an anonymising proxy, and that you are not restricted from editing via your normal IP address. Given these (non-negotiable) assumptions, I think you'll fall outside the criteria for block exemption on this wiki. However if you think you may still meet the requirements for block exemption after reading the policy, you're welcome to contact a checkuser with your request. You can find one on this page. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:05, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I probably don't need the exempt now. If anything changes, I'll drop a request! Cheers Kknundy --(talk) 23:50, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
