The poison I'm speaking of (Northern Ireland disputes) on Wikipedia has apparently seeped into my being again. It's best I depart from that discussion - ONIH & Padraig (for example) have never shown interest in hockey articles before, but now they do (only because of Ireland issues). OK, I went through and edited what few things I could find to change. The only major change I made was changing all occurrences of "Present" to "2008," based on a consensus reached at WT:HOCKEY. Team Colouring

My rationale for removing the colours on the list is I see the green shades intended more for current players, and current players is so much more controversial, ie)players sent down to the minors, so it has been listed as "Player who have currently played in the 07-08 season" or whatever the wording is. When I look at the lists and I see green players, it symbolizes that the player is currently on the roster or still in the organization.

In my humble opinion, Denis still deserves to have a green link because as far as I know, he's still in the lightning organization, playing in Norfolk, am I correct? And call-ups shouldn't be creating problems so long as they are still in the team's organization as they have a very good chance of being called up again. It's just the organization-to-organization transactions that I have a problem with.

I tend to make more sense in my head rather than what I type, but my main point is I just made these edits because I think the green shades should be current players. Maybe in actuality they are designed for players who've played this season, but it just makes so much more sense to have them as current players currently in the organization. While I agree with what you are saying, I still think it makes more sense to uncolour players no longer active on the roster. I think it saves confusion later on, and is generally more accurate. Personally, it's no problem for me doing this type of stuff at deadlines. I consider myself a roster demon. Pretty much all my edits have been roster related. But I guess I'll refrain from removing the colours them until the next season.

And by the way, I was just in Crofton the other day. It's a nice, quaint little town. Let's hope the Canucks make the Avalanche regret signing Forsberg! Thricecube (talk) 00:09, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your email. We need a source, because the date and origin of the image will dictate whether or not it is in the public domain. If it is a Canadian image, it is most likely public domain in both Canada and the U.S. (because the Wikipedia servers are located in the U.S., an image must be public domain both in its country of origin and in the U.S.). If it is an American image, we cannot determine if the image is public domain as it could easily have been taken in 1923 or afterwards (any time up until some time towards the end of 1925). That's why the source is essential, because the image can't be deemed to be public domain without it. I hope that helps. We don't necessarily need to know the photographer (the creators of older photos are often unknown), but we do need the source. I guess the most important question is: where did you get the image? Stanley Cup template

Thanks for bringing up this issue. I'm not a member of the Hockey project, and kind of made an assumption that since baseball, american football, and basketball had adopted these navboxes, hockey would be no different. For someone like Richard, I would suggest looking at Babe Ruth as a player with many World Series titles. On the Ruth page the champion navboxes are placed within one collapsible navbox (so all of Richard's 11 navboxes would take up the space of one). That way, if a reader wants to look, if they choose, without cluttering the page. Beyond that, I don't see much that differentiates hockey from other sports on WP. Let me know what you think. Thanks for the response. I agree that things like this are a balance. While there is a need to limit the clutter that may come to a page like Henri Richard or Mark Messier, I also think that navboxes like this help build the many articles that are in stub status and bolster the articles of the not-so-notable players. To use an example from baseball, a player like Kevin Cash, who has been an on-and-off backup catcher in MLB for a few years low on the notability scale. His inclusion, however, on the 2007 Boston Red Sox enhances his notability, since he was a member of that group. Anyway, those are some of my thoughts. Vancouver Canucks task force

Hey! I noticed you spend a bit of your time on Wikipedia editing Vancouver Canucks related articels. I have been thinking about starting a Vancouver Canucks task force under WikiProject Ice Hockey for some time now, and am now going into the stage of gathering interest, seeing if anyone would actually be interested in joining. I recently noticed that you deleted Image:Lindenmclean1994.jpg, citing invalid justification. As the uploader of the image, that leads me to just ask for some clarification. I'm not totally familiar with the whole image policy, finding it way to complex and difficult to follow when there's much more I'd rather be doing, so I hope you can bear with me here. I added the image when preparing Trevor Linden for it's FA nom, which it passed. I'd like to point out that not once during the nomination were any concerns raised about this or any other images, but that's probably not enough of a basis to back this on.

The image was added after I was trying to find more images of Linden, feeling two current ones were not enough. After looking at Dominik Hasek, which uses some non-free images. Specifically, my rational for uploading was Image:VezinaHasek.jpg. As such, I tried to provide the same justification used for that image.

I don't want this to be seen as a user complaining that someone deleted their image, because it's not that. I'm more trying to understand what rational can be given to keep Image:Lindenmclean1994.jpg, as it is the most defining picture in the career of Trevor Linden. Shane O'Brien and the 2008–09 Vancouver Canucks season article

I have to disagree with the removal of the † symbol from Shane O'Brien's name in the 2008–09 Vancouver Canucks season article. The symbol denotes that the player spent time with another team before joining Vancouver and that his stats on this page reflect time with the Canucks only. O'Brien played in one regular season game with Tampa Bay prior to joining Vancouver, as can be seen here. Regardless if you get traded at the beginning of the year or at the trade deadline, it was a regular season game and if he goes on to play in all 82 Canucks games, he will have played 83 regular season games this year. Not having the symbol beside O'Brien just doesn't make any sense to me. If it's not a consistent symbol, then why have it at all? He may not have recorded any points in the game, but at the end of the day, his 1 game worth of stats should be included on the Tampa season article with the * symbol or whatever is being used for played who didn't finish the year with the team, and the † symbol should be beside his name in the Vancouver article. – Nurmsook! ^talk... 01:53, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

I totally forgot to nominate Trevor Linden for Today's featured article. Just to clear things up, the date we wanted for this nomination is December 17, 2008. I just made a template (if that's what it's called) for the nomination...

Trevor Linden, OBC (born April 11, 1970, in Medicine Hat, Alberta) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played centre and right wing with four different teams: the Vancouver Canucks (in two stints), New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, and Washington Capitals. Before joining the NHL in 1988, Linden captained the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL) to consecutive Memorial Cup championships. In addition to appearing in two NHL All-Star games, Linden was a member of the 1998 Canadian Olympic team and participated in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

Throughout his career, Linden has been recognized as a respected leader on and off the ice. He was named captain of the Canucks at the age of 21, making him one of the youngest captains in league history. While captaining the Canucks, Linden led the team to within a game of winning the Stanley Cup in 1994. It was during this time that he began to be called Captain Canuck. In 1998 he was elected President of the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA), a position he held for eight years. As President, he played an instrumental role in the 2004–05 NHL lockout, including taking a direct role in negotiations with league owners. Off the ice, Linden has taken an active role in charities, and was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for leadership on the ice and humanitarian contributions off the ice in 1997, as well as the NHL Foundation Player Award in 2008. After 19 seasons in the NHL, Linden retired on June 11, 2008, twenty years to the day after he was drafted into the NHL. (more...)

Re: Some information on the WHL

My one good book that covers this time frame (The Memorial Cup) does not mention who the captain was. It has small team photos for each year, and in 1987 shows five players wearing an A, but none wearing a C. 1988 has a player wearing a C, but I can't figure out who it was. Logically, I would expect Chynoweth was the captain rather than Linden, though he probably wore an A. During this time, Linden would have been 17/18 years old, while Chynoweth was 19/20. Typically it is the 19 year olds that serve as captains on junior teams, and I expect that it would have been similar 20 years ago, especially with a team as stacked as those Tigers' teams were. Either way, I would expect I could find out for sure from an old newspaper, and if you like, can add that to my list of things to do next time I visit the library. Patrick O'Sullivan

According to [1], it has an original trade of O'Sullivan to the Hurricanes, and then a trade between the Hurricanes and the Oilers. I don't know if this is a three-way trade, but is it safe to exclude the Hurricanes from his list of teams in the infobox (irregardless of whether he played a game for them or not)? Nominating NHL Eastern and Western Conference templates for deletion=Jumping to conclusions

The templates were designed to help casual hockey fans a better, more concentrated understanding of the lineage behind the respective conferences. For example, it's highly likely that a lot of people who don't follow the NHL don't instantly understand the significance of the Campbell and Wales Conferences or the divisions that corresponded them.

I am presuming the broken sortability is the goaltender's save percentage column? The problem there may be that it is treating ".900" as a word value rather than a number, thus the 0 always shows up first. I've fixed that with a sort template. Otherwise, You shouldn't need hidden values for any of the player stats sections, as they are all numbers. The two greatest problems I had with the Flames draft picks table is that if anything other than a numeral is used, it treats the entire column as an alpha sort, thus putting 9 before 80, etc, and that blank spaces were treated as equivalent to 0, and sorted accordingly. Neither of these issues seems present in your table. If this isn't what you are trying to solve, can you point me more specifically towards what needs fixing? Resolute 00:15, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Howie Morenz alt text

Thanks for taking a crack at adding alt text to Howie Morenz. It's a good start. Some comments:

• The lead (infobox) image and the 1934 All Star game image still need alt text.
• Phrases like "posing for photograph" should probably be omitted. See WP:ALT #Flawed and better examples, example 2.
• The first image that says "ice hockey player" should give a few more visual details, for visually impaired readers who don't know what 1930s ice hockey players looked like. It should at least mention the curved stick, skates, and gloves, which are all prominent. Come to think of it, it should also mention the bare head!

This shouldn't be added to players who have only played for the junior team like Nikita Filatov and Mike Ribeiro. According to Template:Infobox ice hockey player, it's just senior. I would tend to agree. As a junior hockey junkie, I'd be fine with the U20 team being there, but once you start getting into U18, U17, etc, it becomes convoluted and, really, non-notable. Lacking a new discussion, we've typically set the bar at senior team representation only. Resolute 05:03, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
