Salesianum School page

John, I am new to this, but trying to make some needed edits to the Salesianum School page which I started last evening. Some of them are very obvious, such as the misspelling of the President's name and some recent athletic updates. Also, the school has a diverse and acclaimed academic program which is not mentioned, as well as long and rich history in the state of Delaware which currently is limited to a single unfortunate part of our history. I would like to take this on as a project, but this morning I saw that even a few modest attempts have been reset to the previous copy. How does one proceed? I have corrected the President's name as per the school website. I've also removed an unnecessary sub-heading in the "History" section. I haven't done anything with the sporting statistics, as I don't see any benefit in a secondary school article having lists of statistics like these that will need updating every year and don't have independent reliable sources to support them.

Some things to bear in mind:

• Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines gives guidelines for editing school articles.
• Plano Senior High School and Amador Valley High School are Featured Articles about secondary schools; these show how a school article should look at its best.
• Your use of the first person suggests you have a WP:Conflict of interest, something to be aware of.
• Using WP:edit summaries, and/or creating a WP:ACCOUNT, often helps to avoid being speedily reverted. (The vast majority of edits without edit summaries from unregistered accounts on school articles are vandalism from school pupils, and thus such edits tend to be treated as suspect.)

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello John from Idegon. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Revert of St. Augustine College Preparatory School

I more than appreciate your concerns about the edits being made to the article for St. Augustine College Preparatory School, especially as they relate to COI issues among other concerns. However, your recent revert removed significant amounts of useful changes, corrections and sources that had been added to the article. While there are clear issues with formatting and unencyclopedic material, the additions were made in clear good faith and are overwhelmingly positive improvements to the article. I had assumed that I would wait until the editor was finished with changes to the article before I was going to jump in, but if we more experienced editors are going to be undoing any of the changes this editor had made, we should do it with as light a touch as possible. I completely disagree, but that is no surprise. Private school articles are frequently used as PR vehicles for the school and I will always undertake to revert that aggressively. Sorry you don't agree, but assuming as much good faith as I possibly can in light of your attitude of ownership over everything related to New Jersey, we will just have to disagree. If she wants to proceed in the manner which COI policy prescribes, I will glad to consider her improvements. But at this time, she is obviously writing in a manner to promote, not inform (yes that is my opinion, but an experienced one) and my reversions are proper. I completely disagree with your take. The edits that have been made to the article are overwhelmingly positive and backed by appropriate sources. The material you reverted includes sourced details about the tuition, accreditation and history of the school, as well as the school's correct name. Your edits made the article distinctly worse than it was before and did so in an arbitrary and disruptive manner. I have reinserted most of the material you had removed and I take full responsibility for the article and its contents. I will look over the shoulder of the person editing the article to ensure that any potential COI issues are addressed. In the meantime, you may want to review WP:AGF. Like I said, we are not going to agree. Her edits were self-admittedly motivated by direction from the school administration, or did you bother to look back far enough to see that before you came barging in here telling me I don't know what I am doing? She is a pure COI editor, and there is no good faith to be assumed when someone admits that up front. I instructed her on how to proceed. Tough luck if you don't like the way I did it. I did not look at the quality of the rapid fire edits she made, nor do I care. You can't be a turtle one day and a lion the next. She MUST proceed per COI policy and discuss her edits on the talk page. So please drop this here...it won't go anywhere, and I too will review her editing and discuss it on the article's talk page. It really doesn't matter what a group of stores refers to itself as. It might matter what secondary sources said if any were cited. "prohabition against using staff names" in school articles

Hi!. I hope all is well with you. In this talk page comment and in an earlier comment on that talk page, you indicate that WP:SCH/AG includes a "prohabition against using staff names [that] has just recently been extended to include the infobox." I've looked at all the related discussions and I can find no such consensus to change the widely used standard of listing top staff -- including assistant principals and vice principals -- in the infobox or body of school articles. Can you point me to this new prohibition and where this consensus was reached?

BTW, 7 & 6, I clearly told him I would be happy to discuss any particular edit with him on an article talk page when I told him not to post here. I DARED to discuss with a third editor a problem we had both encountered with Mr. Sohn and for that he opened an action against me at ANI. Since then he has been showing up around me in places he had never before gone. On editors i talk to regularly's talk, at articles I edit that he has never before edited upon and the aforementioned new editor's talk. I'm sorry User:Alansohn has caused you so much frustration. As you know, I spent months editing Mississippi articles, and want to focus now on New Jersey. Since I began working on that state, he's altered nearly every edit I've made. In one case, he redirected a new article I had written about a location, because the only source for the article was GNIS. Then, I noticed many pages he had edited--but not redirected--where the only source was GNIS. In some cases, he will change edits and then pull his rationale from WP:USCITIES. In other cases, he'll justify edits by denouncing WP:USCITIES as "not policy". His edit to Talk:Lincoln Park, New Jersey dumbfounds me. I will continue to focus on New Jersey for now, as the articles there need attention. His behavior seems so contrary to the other editors I've encountered on Wiki. Posting a friendly note at the help desk seems to work, as it attracts attention to edit, and in every instance, support for the edit. Very unfortunate. I just want to comment that I've greatly appreciated your (both John from Idegon and Magnolia677) help, encouragement, reversions, etc. Don't get too upset with Alansohn, he has obviously done a lot of good work. Many talented editors (including John, Magnolia, and Alan) justifiably have great confidence in their work. This sometimes leads to viewing newcomers with suspicion, taking ownership of articles, and perhaps a degree of arrogance toward unfamiliar editors. It may also sometimes lead an editor into using their knowledge to work the system to "rig the game" in their favor, which runs off both vandals and potentially superb editors..... Try to appreciate Alan's obvious desire to improve Wikipedia. Carefully consider whether his arguments have merit, but don't be intimidated if they do not. Don't let any editor bait you into losing your cool - or if they do, don't immortalize it in page history. Keep your eye on the goal, keep up the good work everybody and we all win, despite frustrations along the way. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Thanks again all for the help you have provided me!
