Please explain

If you put a vandalism warning template on my talk page, I would hope that there is some explanation as to how you believe my edit constituted vandalism. I attempted to reach out in dialogue in my edit summary and would have expected anyone reverting the edit to do the same, or to explain their thought process on my talk page as a matter of good etiquette. 2600:100D:B120:EB72:5CE:A2E1:5BF4:DC04 (talk) 00:18, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Hello! First of all, thank you for being very civil and kind in asking me about your edits. It is much appreciated. Regarding your edits, we typically don't bold words in the lead of an article, barring the person's name. The use of bold to highlight the "most pertinent information" for readers is in fact against Wikipedia policy. It violates WP:NPOV as all articles are written from a neutral point of view. This means all information is treated with equal importance. Bolding certain information makes it seem more important than the other information, which violates the aforementioned policy. I marked your edits as vandalism because they seemed to fit under the definition which is "an edit that deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the project's purpose". In this case the "project's purpose" refers to WP:5P. Now that you have reached out to me, I have learned that the edits were actually in good faith. I understand that you are likely opinionated on the topic which you edited. I would like to go on the record and say that your edits were not vandalism, rather just edits that happened to violate WP:NPOV. However, I was not incorrect in reverting the edits because they still violated WP:NPOV. I would like to apologize for not being clearer regarding my rationale when reverting your edits. I encourage you to read WP:HEP and WP:5P to learn more about editing Wikipedia efficiently. If you would like further clarification or have more questions regarding Wikipedia editing, please do not hesitate to contact me again. Regards, Jith12 (talk) 00:34, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

"French is an official language of the IOC, but not of English Wikipedia. If you believe that the French name should be included in the article, please first start a discussion on the talk page." then change all the other Olympic pages and remove the French titles

It's not consistent Yeungkahchun (talk) 22:25, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

@Yeungkahchun: I'm not quite sure what you are talking about. I understand that French is an official language of the IOC, but articles for specific editions of the Olympic Games only use English and the official language(s) of the country where the Games are being held. Take the page 2016 Summer Olympics for example. It uses the English name as the primary name, and has the Portuguese name (official language of Brazil) in parentheses. I may be mistaken, but the norm is to only include the English name and the local official language. Regards, Jith12 (talk) 23:28, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
@Jith1:I was just confused as some pages such as 2014 Winter Olympics and 2022 Winter Olympics also have the French name in parentheses but French isn't an official language in those countries Yeungkahchun (talk) 00:38, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
@Yeungkahchun: Huh. That's weird. You are right, there do seem to be discrepancies depending on the article. If you think that the French name should be included in the articles on the Olympics my recommendation would be to start a discussion at Talk:2018 Winter Olympics. That way we can establish consensus amongst other editors as to whether we should include all official languages of the IOC. Regards, Jith12 (talk) 01:09, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
